10 Life Lessons I Learned From My Mother

I am blessed with a mother who is a wonderful role model for womanhood and motherhood. I’m sure this is largely in part because she had a wonderful role model. My grandmother raised five of her own kids and countless others. She was a godly woman who always put others’ needs before her own. She was as outspoken as she was loving and kind. She never hesitated to tell you when you were veering off on the wrong path, and she was rarely wrong.

Unfortunately her life came to an abrupt halt when she lost her life to cancer in her early sixties. However, her legacy lives on through 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. My mother is fortunate to be the eldest, and she learned a lot from her mama.

When I became a mom, I did all the things new moms are supposed to do. I read all the right books. (And some of the wrong ones.) I consulted my friends who were in the trenches with me. I observed and read and debated and discussed, but in the end, the best advice I’ve received about life and motherhood was from my own mother.

In honor of Mother’s Day coming up next weekend, I’m sharing 10 pieces of motherly wisdom that I’ve gleaned from my mom over the years.

10 Life Lessons I Learned From My Mother

1. Never wake a sleeping baby.

2. If you can do it once, you can do it again and again.

3. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

4. Never go to bed without taking off your makeup.

5. Eat dinner together every night.

6. For pie crusts and biscuits, always use Crisco.

7. Don’t skimp on tires or shoes.

8. In matters of home improvement and medical care, always get a second opinion.

9. Don’t go to bed angry.

10. You can do anything you set your mind to.

Now it’s YOUR turn. What is the best lesson your mother taught you, or the most important thing you’ve learned through your own experience as a mom??
