15 Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

Happy November, friends! It’s hard to believe, but Halloween has come and gone, and Thanksgiving is less than a month away.

While what to wear for Turkey Day isn’t nearly as important as what’s on the menu, it’s still worth putting some thought into, so today I’m rounding up 15 Thanksgiving outfit ideas for your style inspiration.

Thanksgiving outfits are a funny thing. People have all different kinds of requirements and all different types of dress codes. Some of you dress up and go out to eat, some of you are in the kitchen, some make the rounds of various family groups throughout the day, some of you stay at home in pajamas… and on it goes.

Plus, depending on your area of the country, it could be anywhere from 10 to 98 degrees on Thanksgiving Day. So yeah, one Thanksgiving Day outfit isn’t going to make you all happy. A roundup of 15 Thanksgiving Day outfits probably won’t make everybody happy, either, but I’m going to give it a shot!

15 Thanksgiving Day Outfit Ideas

#1. If you’re hot-natured… or live in a warm climate, a short-sleeve poncho is perfect for Thanksgiving. You can eat all you want and not worry about it getting tight. (Pair it with your stretchiest jeans, of course!)  My ochre color was in stock again when I started putting this post together, but I see inventory has once again been depleted. Here’s another option, and it’s 30% off with code FEELGOOD.

#2. If you’re going to be cooking… a cardigan over a t-shirt and jeans or pants provides the most versatility. You can take the cardigan off while you’re working in the kitchen, and throw it on when your guests arrive, or when you sit down to eat. Same goes for the shoes. Wear something comfortable all day, and switch into boots or heels for dinner. Or ditch the heeled booties altogether. When I’m hosting, I usually wear slippers or flats.

#3. For casual at-home gatherings with close family or friends… you can’t go wrong with jeans and a pullover in a festive fall color.

#4. Here’s a similar look with a waffle knit top. It’s a lighter weight for those in warmer climates (or in warm kitchens.)

#5. If you’re going out to dinner…. I love the way the plaid coat levels up this simple look, and you can swap the mules for booties if it’s cold.

#6. Here’s a similar outfit for a more casual venue. It’s the same sweater with blue jeans and flats, topped off with a caramel-colored leather jacket. These jeans are very comfortable, and the leopard print loafer adds a nice pop of pattern and texture.

I would remove the jacket when inside. Here’s how that looks. I can’t say enough good things about this sweater. It’s such a good fall/winter basic, and a great value for Vince at 40% off.

#7. And this is a similar look for a warmer climate… A blouse replaces the sweater, and open toe shoes are an option, if you prefer.

dolman top (S; long sleeve version) // black crop flares (28) //  quilted slides // necklace // hoop earrings // bracelet // crossbody

Throw a sleek blazer on top to elevate the look, and for extra warmth, if needed.

#8. If jeans are too casual for your dinner venue…. I’ve also worn this outfit with skinny pants and strappy sandals.

#9. Here’s another look with black pants… I love camel and black together. It’s always sophisticated and has a way of looking more expensive than it is.

#10. And this is a similar outfit with a camel turtleneck and snake print pumps. Leopard pumps also work well with this color combo, and of course flats are an option if you don’t do heels.

#11. A sweater dress is always a good option for Thanksgiving dinner… It’s classy, and it allows you to eat as much as you want in supreme comfort! This is a more elevated look with a black sweater dress and snake print pumps. I added a metallic statement necklace for interest. Unfortunately, everything here is sold out, but it’s easy to recreate a similar outfit.

Here’s the same dress in a pretty russet color. It’s from last year, so no longer available, but I did find this one. In fact, I just ordered it! I like both the Rich Russet and the Forest Night for Thanksgiving. You can always add tights if you need warmth, and while I love a knee-high boot with a sweater dress, ankle boots are an option if you want a more modern look.

#12. For a casual look with pants that aren’t jeans… Try an olive cargo pant. I’m having trouble sourcing similar pieces for these looks, but perhaps you can shop your closet and come up with a good variation on this basic outfit formula.

#13. For those who love their leggings… I don’t usually wear leggings, but they’re definitely one of the most comfortable options for a holiday involving a big meal. Go monochromatic for an elevated look. Faux leather leggings are the chicest choice, by far, and they’re very on trend right now. But any non-workout leggings will work. Just make sure they’re thick and not see-through.

I’m wearing leather boots with this look, but if you’re wearing faux leather leggings, go for a suede boot. Having a variety of textures is important in a monochromatic outfit. Also be sure to wear a piece of statement jewelry to give the outfit a focal point. In this case, I went with a pair of statement earrings. I also love that croc embossed bag, but it’s old and no longer available.

#14. If you don’t plan to leave your house all day… There’s no shame in being comfy, especially if you’re at home with your family all day. A cozy pullover and joggers might be just what the doctor ordered!

#15. What I actually wore last year for Thanksgiving Day… We stayed home alone for the first time ever due to Covid. At least, it was the first time since the Thanksgiving of 1999 when I was recovering from having D.

We ate dinner by ourselves, but we had friends over that evening for dessert and games. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the day in joggers and a pullover, so I wore a jeans and a sweater tee and added a statement bracelet. I love these studded flats, but they’re sold out, and an animal print would have really leveled up this look.

  1. What size and color (Russet or Forest Night) did you recently order in the Talbots pointelle shift sweater dress? That would be wonderful for the office beside wearing on Thanksgiving. I’ve always been a classic Talbots girl!

  2. Great post. Love all the looks. This might be silly but did the font get smaller? It’s seems really little 👀😊

      1. Hi, thanks for the quick reply. It seems to be on both, but I originally looked on the post that I read on my phone. I am on my email and it’s pretty tiny. No big deal, I wonder if anyone else has noticed? It might just be me 😉

        1. Hi, no, it’s not just you. The font of the email on my phone is tiny; not fun at all. Once I click on the image to be taken to the post it’s better. It only changed a few days ago with the new layout and I’m sure the kinks are still being worked out.

          1. I also noticed that when I clicked the link from the email to get to the blog post, I was immediately presented with a pop up suggesting that I subscribe, which I already am.

  3. So many great options! Here in Southern Louisiana, we usually have very warm holidays, which is no fun. Layering is my friend!
Sharon mentioned the font seems smaller… It does seem smaller on the email but not in the post. I like the new email layout. I’m glad that the color of your font is black. Some bloggers try to be creative/cute and make the font color dark gray/light black or some other color that makes us over 40 ladies have to strain our eyes to read. I usually just click off their site. Anywho…yours is easy to read. Thanks!

  4. What a great post! You can’t go wrong with a sweater dress, I have a black one from Lands End that I’ve had for years and still pull it out often. The Talbots ones look nice too, never goes out of style.

  5. This post is timely because we’re going to be out of town for Thanksgiving for the first time in 30 years and I was wondering what to pack for the big day. I don’t wear leggings except to work out but I’ve had a pair of leather leggings in my closet for at least 10 years– and I’ve worn them for casual Thanksgivings because they are super comfy but take an every day outfit up a notch. I make sure they aren’t super tight in the legs so they look more like slim pants than leggings. Recently I’ve been wearing them around town with a pair of black leather sneakers and feel very fashion-forward in this 59.8 -year-old body!

  6. This is a fantastic post! I love all of the outfits you showed, and what a great idea to start November with this. It is time to be figuring out how the holidays are going to lay out, this post will be kept in my Pinterest account. Thanks for all the variety and the timing for this!

  7. Great outfit ideas for us to recreate with items we have in our closet, that will suit our Thanksgiving Day plans. Since it will just be the two of us, I will definitely be dressed very comfy.
