Try On Haul + My Daily Looks

Happy Friday, friends! I’m super excited that 25 Days of Summer Fashion starts tomorrow! That’s when I team up with Cyndi Spivey, and we each style a new summer outfit every day except Sundays during the month of June!

Because that’s a pretty full schedule, I may not be doing weekly try on hauls along with my daily outfits, although I sometimes share those on Sundays during these style challenges.

I prefer to keep Sundays to non-business related content, though, so I may just save up my outfits for a big What I Wore in June post. Honestly, my daily outfits during the summertime are verrrrry repetitive, so that would probably be better anyway.

All that to say, today is probably my last Try On Haul + Daily Looks post for a while. Let’s start with what I’ve been wearing.

My Daily Looks

It’s actually been almost two weeks since I did one of these posts, so this goes back a ways.

This is what I wore to a potluck dinner with friends from church one Saturday night. For size reference, I have this top in a small and the pants in a 29. The pants are currently $25 off at Bloomies, but I got them for 25% off, so I recommend waiting if you like them… unless you’re dying to have them right away; $25 off is better than nothing!

I wore this to church two Sundays ago, and afterwards to host some friends at our house for a cookout, and I was comfortable all day. It’s a shame this dress is almost sold out. I have the medium, for reference.

I don’t remember where I wore this, but evidently it was a day I didn’t put on makeup because I cut off my face, ha! Actually, I’m remembering now, because of my Facebook caption. I had an appointment that morning that I didn’t want to wear makeup for, and after that I kept intending to put on my face, but things kept cropping up that took priority, and it just didn’t happen. #ohwell

I wore this or something like it probably 5 days of the last 10 weekdays. The tank is a small, but I wish I’d ordered the medium because it did shrink some in the wash. I ordered the solid grey in medium, and I like the drapier fit.

I also wore this outfit more than once in the past week or so, although I wore my Millers with it the other time I wore it.

I wore the same top with white shorts and white sandals to host friends by the pool last Friday night.

And this is what I wore to church last Sunday. I’m all about these stretchy sheath dresses right now!

I wore this next outfit for a Memorial Day BBQ with friends in their backyard. This tee is super old, but I love the neckline, and it’s linen so it’s lightweight and breathable — nice for warm days when you still want a polished look.

Tuesday was a bit rough. As you can see, I put on some minimal makeup but I didn’t bother with my hair. It was also a weird day, weather wise. I kept vacillating between being hot and cold, and I had a few appointments that required being in offices with the A/C cranking so I wore this cardigan over my tank and took it off when I got warm.

I changed into sandals later in the day when the cardigan came off for good (and the necklace, evidently.). I actually took pictures of both looks. This is the tank in the medium, so you can see how it has a little more of a drape than the stripe one in the small, but it’s still cut high enough under the arms not to show bra straps, which is nice.

I wore this on Wednesday morning to run to the mall for a few things. Unfortunately this top is almost sold out in the navy, and I’m really bummed because Alison and I took pictures with shorts for my summer style series. I guess those won’t ever make it to the blog. I did find a short-sleeve version, though, in a green and a lighter blue, and it’s really cute!

And then it got hot so I changed into this after our photo shoot and wore it for the rest of the day. Yes, I do have this tank in 3 colors. What “no duplicates” rule??? 🙈

I think that pretty much covers it, at least for the pictures I have. Let’s move on to my try on haul.

Try On Haul: Loft + Nordstrom

This is more of a gentle tug than a haul, ha! In other words, I don’t have a lot to share, but I’ll show you what I’ve got.

I stopped into Loft on a whim one day last week, even though I had just placed an order during the Memorial Day weekend sale. That order still hasn’t come, but I tried a few things on in-store.

First up, this striped shell

And with a front-tuck…

LOFT Striped Ruffle Henley Shell (size small) // This top is really cute, but unfortunately not on me. I was expecting the neck to split open where it’s unbuttoned, to create a bit of a v-neckline, but it didn’t really do that, and the ruffles by the neck and at the arms just make me look more top-heavy than I already am. It also doesn’t have much structure through the waist.

That said, I love the vertical stripes and the idea of a casual blouse as an alternative to the t-shirts I usually wear, so I’ll keep looking. If you like it, it’s 40% off right now!

also wearing: MOTHER Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans (TTS or size up if in between) and Tory Burch Minnie Travel Ballet Flats (TTS)

LOFT Tie Hem Tank

LOFT Tie Hem Tank (size small) // I like this top in theory, but it’s a little long for me. #shortwaistissues

It’s a nice, thick material though; and it has a flattering v-neck and thick enough straps to wear a regular bra with no issues, so there’s a lot to like about this top.

It also comes in olive and navy, and I would recommend sizing up one. The small was a little snug, and there is no room for shrinkage. It’s also 40% off.

also wearing: MOTHER Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans (TTS or size up if in between) and Tory Burch Minnie Travel Ballet Flats (TTS)

LOFT Tie Waist Shirtdress (size 6) // This dress is all sorts of no for me, but I’m sure it would flatter someone. Again, it buttons up, and when I leave a few unbuttoned, it doesn’t split open in a flattering way, like I expected it to.

It was also too tight over the bust, but fits well everywhere else, so keep that in mind if you’re larger on top.

I’d also like it better in a different color, I think. I know utility dressing is having a moment, but this shade of green is kind of sickly. At any rate, if you like it, it’s 50% off!

LOFT Striped Wrap Skirt (size 8) // This right here is why I don’t wear many skirts. This skirt requires a tucked-in top because of the tie detail at the waist, and I’m too short-waisted and busty to tuck in my tops when the waistband of the bottoms sit at my natural waist.

How many times can I use “waist” in a sentence???

Maybe a top that’s a little looser and blouses out some would work… or a t-shirt with a front-tuck? I probably should have kept trying because I like this skirt, and I definitely recommend it for work wear if you like skirts. Also note, I sized up to an 8. The 6 was too tight in the waist.

LOFT Cutaway Tank (wearing a small, but I bought the medium) // This is a nice layering tee, if you don’t mind the high neckline. It also fits very snug, even when you size up, so keep that in mind. It’s a nice piece to have if you need a simple tank to tuck into shorts and skirts.

Both this skirt and tank are 40% off!

LOFT Striped Tie Waist Button Skirt

LOFT Striped Tie Waist Button Skirt

LOFT Striped Tie Waist Button Skirt (size small) // I have the same issue with this skirt as with the other. Fortunately it gives me some more flexibility with where it sits on my “waist” — because of the elastic waistband, I can pull it down some, to give myself the illusion of a longer upper body. I also think it would look better with a looser tee that I can front-tuck because I don’t care for the back view with the tucked-in shirt.

Really cute skirt, though, so if it works for you, I highly recommend! It also comes in petite and plus sizes, and it’s 40% off today!

also wearing: LOFT Cutaway Tank

LOFT Floral Button Front Midi Skirt (size small) // This time I was able to leave the tank untucked, and I like it better because it helps elongate the upper body, but I’m wearing the small and I need the medium. I’m sucking in my gut for all it’s worth to avoid a muffin top, ha!

This skirt is really pretty, and the midi length is nice for a change. I think I could like it with the right sized top and a neutral heeled sandal. It also comes in petite sizes, and it’s 40% off.

also wearing: LOFT Cutaway Tank

LOFT Fern Kimono (size XS/S) // I love this kimono, and they actually have quite a few cute ones right now. This is a really good length for wearing with jeans or shorts. You will probably see this again during 25 Days of Summer Fashion! It comes in just two sizes, and I went with the smaller. Also, it’s 30% off today.

also wearing: LOFT Cutaway Tank with MOTHER Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans (TTS or size up if in between) and Tory Burch Minnie Travel Ballet Flats (TTS)

LOFT Tie Hem Linen Tee

also wearing: MOTHER Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans (TTS or size up if in between) and Tory Burch Minnie Travel Ballet Flats (TTS)

LOFT Tie Hem Linen Tee (size small) // This tee is cute, but it’s on the thinner side, and I’m not a big fan of the crewneck. Definitely size up with this one, my usual small is snug on me. It also comes in navy if you prefer one that’s not as see-through. It also comes in petite, and it’s 40% off.

Boyish Jeans The Zachary Super High Waist Ankle Skinny Jeans (size 29) // I don’t know why I keep ordering straight leg jeans. I must have seen another blogger recommend these, although I don’t remember which one.

First of all, they run small. I could barely button them. They also might possibly have the biggest rear pockets I’ve ever seen. Plus they’re too long, but I could cut them since they have a raw hem. The wash is really nice, I’ll say that much. For that reason, I’d definitely try this brand again, but this pair is going back.

also wearing: Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank (size small but wish it were a medium) with Treasure & Bond Miles Slide Sandals (TTS; size 8)

Lucky Brand Camouflage-Print High-Low Tank Top with Madewell 9" Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans in Pure White

Lucky Brand Camouflage-Print High-Low Tank Top

Lucky Brand Camouflage-Print High-Low Tank Top (size small) // This is possibly THE softest tank top ever. It definitely rivals my new favorite Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank. I’m wearing a small, but it just fits; a medium might be safer, so I’d recommend sizing up if in between.

I wish it didn’t have such a dramatic high-low hem, but I know some ladies like their tops longer in the back. It’s also cut a little big around the armholes, so my bra shows just a little, which is bothersome, but not a deal-breaker.

I wouldn’t pair it with the white jeans and espadrilles, for the record. That’s just what I happened to be wearing that day. I tried this on at Nordstrom, but I can’t find it on their site. I did, however, find it on sale at Lord + Taylor.

also wearing: Madewell 9″ Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans in Pure White (TTS or size up if in between) and Eileen Fisher Washed Leather d’Orsay Espadrille Flats (size up half)

J.Crew Tie Back Tank Top (size small but need a medium) // This top is cute, but I need the medium. I tried it on at Nordstrom, but can’t find it in this color on the Nordstrom website. You can find this color at J.Crew for 40% off, but it’s backordered. This top is also 25% off at Nordstrom in other colors, and J.Crew Mercantile has a similar one for less on Amazon.

Wit & Wisdom Stretch Denim Skirt (size 8 but need a 6) // This denim skirt is so cute for summer, and it’s a really comfortable stretch denim. I’m wearing the 8 here, but it’s definitely too big. I purchased the 6. The fading keeps it pretty casual, and I wish it wasn’t faded so much on the back, but I can overlook it because of the fit.

also wearing: Eileen Fisher Washed Leather d’Orsay Espadrille Flats (size up half)

Ali & Jay Sleeveless Slim Leg Asymmetrical Jumpsuit

Ali & Jay Sleeveless Slim Leg Asymmetrical Jumpsuit

Ali & Jay Sleeveless Slim Leg Asymmetrical Jumpsuit (size medium) // Now this is really cute on, but just a tad too low-cut for  my personal comfort level. I wasn’t sure about the “envelope tailoring” but it’s actually very flattering and helps camouflage a bit of a belly. Overall, it’s a super flattering jumpsuit, especially if you’re not a fan of the wide leg trend.

It also comes in red and black. For size reference, the medium is none too big on me, so definitely size up if in between.

KUT from the Kloth Lauren Crop Jeans (size 8) // Okay, you guys. I MAY HAVE FOUND THE PERFECT STRAIGHT CROP JEANS!!!

If only Kut from the Kloth wouldn’t always overdo the whiskering on the front of the thighs. Le sigh… Anyway, I can ignore that and the slightly rough fabric because the cut on these is perfect, and the fit is pretty great too.

The 24 1/2″ inseam is shorter than any other crops I’ve tried (26″ is more typical) and it does put them dangerously close to capri territory, but they still fall below the widest part of my calf, and they’re straight without being baggy or flaring. And while I don’t love the whiskering, I do really like the wash. It has a subtle texture to it that’s summery and fun.

If you’re any taller than my 5’5″, these may be too short on you, but if you’re on the petite side, these could be a great pair of crops for you. And they do actually come in petite sizes as well.

also wearing: J.Crew Linen roll-cuff T-shirt with Tory Burch Miller Sandals in Light Makeup

And that’s a wrap! I love it when I can end on a high note.

I’m excited about my summer style series starting tomorrow. As always, I’m open to ideas and styles you’d like to see me feature!

Have a fabulous Friday!

Formal Mother of the Bride {or Groom} Dress

It’s almost June, and that means wedding season is upon us!

I believe I’ve mentioned that I have several weddings to attend in the next few months, so what to wear has been at the forefront of my mind.

It’s funny how things have shifted as I’ve been in my 40s. It used to be my friends and my cousins getting married, and now it’s my friends’ children and my nieces and nephews getting married.

And you know what that means… it won’t be long until my own kids are planning their nuptials. *cue tears*

Okay, in reality, I think I have some time before it’s my turn… my oldest is only 19.

But many of you are in that situation or have been recently, so I was super excited when Bloomingdale’s reached out to me about partnering on a wedding fashion post.

Bloomingdale’s has long been my go-to retailer for denim, but they also have a large selection of special occasion dresses at a wide range of price points.

If you’re going to be the mother of the bride or groom sometime soon… or if  you’re a wedding guest or a bridesmaid looking for a dress, you’ll definitely want to take a look at what they have to offer.

I started perusing their website, imaging what I might wear if I were going to be the mother of the bride or groom this year, and I landed on this navy blue Adrianna Papell Embellished Illusion Gown.

Navy blue is an excellent color choice for a mother of the bride or groom dress because it’s elegant, slimming, and flattering on almost everyone.

I love how this dress has a semi-sheer yoke and sleeves for those who don’t care to bare a lot of skin, and the bead and sequin embellishments make it perfect for an evening event.

It skims the body without clinging and is fitted through the waist for a flattering fit, then the fluted godet skirt adds just a hint of drama.

The sizing notes on the website suggest sizing down, and I would agree. I’m wearing the 8, my usual size in Adrianna Papell dresses, and this is slightly big on me. I’m 5’5″ and 140# for reference.

It would also need to be hemmed, but that’s to be expected with a floor-length dress, and it’s an easy alteration.

This dress has a lot going on so I kept my accessories minimal with a pair of blingy earrings and a sequined bag, and I simply wore a pair of sparkly metallic ankle strap sandals. The bracelet-length sleeves allow you to wear a piece of jewelry if you wish, but it isn’t necessary.

I love how this dress is sophisticated yet modern, and the length and embellishments make it perfect for the most formal wedding celebrations.

2019 May Favorites

Greetings, friends! I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing weekend, and was able to spend some good quality time with family and friends. It’s time for my May Favorites! This is a collection of new finds and old favorites that I’m particularly loving right now.

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten // eleven // twelve

Most of these will not be new to any of you, but I guess that’s why they’re my favorites… I’m clearly using them a lot at the moment.

2019 May Favorites

Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank

one // This tank is quickly becoming the first top I grab when I want something easy to throw on with shorts and flip flops for a day at home or running casual errands. It’s such a nice weight and super soft, it has a flattering neckline, and it comes in a great assortment of stripes and solids. I may have just ordered my 3rd. *sheepish grin*

This tank is true to size; I have the small, although I did just order the 3rd in a medium to see if I like a more drapey fit. I’ll report back.

J.Crew Linen roll-cuff T-shirt in Navy with Stella & Dot Kaydree Layering Necklace

two // This is first top I reach for when I want something polished but also still easy to throw on with shorts or pants for errands, appointments, getting together with friends, etc. It comes in 7 colors, and it runs slightly small; I have the medium.

Madewell High Rise Skinny Jeans in Pure White

three // You’ve also seen these skinny jeans several times and heard me sing their praises. They’re a great fit, nice and thick, and super comfortable on. They run true to size; I have the 29. They’ve recently been restocked at Madewell, and they also come in Petite, Tall, and Taller lengths.

Nine West Gianna Cutout Slide Sandals

four // These are my new favorite sandals. I like them almost as much as my Millers, although they’re a little dressier and I tend to wear them with different outfits. They run true to size, or may prefer to size down half if you have flat or narrow feet. They also come in white and yellow.

The Seven Sisters: Book One by Lucinda Riley

five // Clearly not fashion-related, but this book is a great summer beach read so I thought I’d include it. I really enjoyed it, although I have to say, I’m not enjoying the second one quite as much.

I also recently read and enjoyed A Well-Behaved Woman and Finding Georgina, if you’re looking for more recommendations.

six // These Joe’s jean shorts with the 5″ inseam are the ones I reach for when I’m running errands or hanging out with friends — especially when I’m doing a lot of sitting. I still wear my shorter ones around the house, but I like this longer length for when I’m out and about. They’re TTS; I have the 29.

They’re 30% off at Nordstrom and 10% off at Zappo’s. You can also find them at Bloomingdale’s and L+T (not on sale, but more sizes available.)

Leith Ruched Body-Con Tank Dress

seven // I cheated a bit with this dress — I admit, I don’t have it anymore, but I’m loving a similar one that is selling out. Since this Leith body con tank dress is so super popular and also on sale, I thought I’d include it here.

COOLA Rosilliance Mineral BB+ Cream Tinted Organic Sunscreen

eight // Now that summer is approaching, I find myself going back to this tinted BB cream with SPF by my favorite sunscreen brand, Coola. It’s an organic mineral based product, and it gives my face a nice glow that comes close to the tan I get on the rest of my body, plus gives me SPF benefits as well. I don’t tan my face, but I do like to get some sun on my arms and legs, so this helps even it all out.

nine // This top is so cute for church or work with white pants, or you can dress it down for the weekend with bluejeans or denim shorts.

ten // This is quickly becoming my go-to summer cardigan. I daresay I’ve been reaching for it even more than my beloved Splendid thermal cardigan. I like how lightweight it is, and the texture to the knit is really pretty.

I wore this grey one for the photo shoot because it looked better with this off-white tank, but I actually ended up keeping the white. It’s TTS; I have the small. It’s also 20% off with code SUMMER.

eleven // These are a little spendy, but they’re such a cute summer shoe and so incredibly lightweight and comfortable on the foot. They come in 5 colors, and I recommend sizing up half.

twelve // This necklace is a really pretty piece, and I like that the pendants are slightly larger than most of the others I have. The shell imprints are really fun for summer, and you can take it apart and wear them separately if you desire. It’s also adjustable, so you can get the perfect length.

Coffee Talk 05.26.19

It’s been a leisurely, slow weekend around here… the perfect kind, in my opinion. I hope yours has been similarly satisfying, whether it’s been leisurely or not.

We hosted friends on Friday night, which was fun, and then yesterday I spent the entire day puttering around the house. I did some work in the morning, and I sat out by the pool with my book for most of the afternoon. I didn’t put on a stitch of makeup, and I probably didn’t burn more than 100 calories all day.

My older daughter, however, had a very productive day. She completely reorganized the kitchen pantry and several cabinets that were in desperate need of attention. I’m telling you, having teenagers isn’t all bad!

Paul grilled steaks for dinner, and then I fell asleep trying to finish my book. So yeah, all in all, a very lazy day!

I’m still working on The Seven Sisters, which is pretty good, but a little more explicit in parts than I prefer. It’s not enough to prevent me from finishing the book or reading more of the series, I just feel the need to make that disclaimer since I recommended it. In the future, maybe I’ll wait to mention books I’m reading until I’ve finished them — at least that way I can give a thorough review — but overall I’m enjoying the storyline very much.

It’s one of those that flips back and forth between the present and the past, which I always find fascinating, and it does give a little history lesson along the way, although not a lot. It’s mostly a fluffy beach read… which I’m totally down for. We don’t have too much on our agenda for today, so I’m hoping to wrap it up this afternoon. I’m at about 88%, I believe.

Beyond that, we don’t have much going on. The girls are excited to be wrapping up the school year here in a couple of weeks, and I’m sure my son is eager to start his summer camp job. At least, I know I am. Ha!

Not that he’s a problem to have at home. In fact, I hardly see him, as he’s taken his video game console to his bedroom so we don’t have to listen to it. But I will be glad for him to spend a few weeks in the great outdoors, doing things that are far more productive than perfecting his Fortnite skills… which are pretty impressive, from what his friends tell me. #thingsthatmakeamamaproud

We’ve also been working on my younger daughter’s room makeover. She’s got her new bed and bedding, curtains, and a few wall hangings; and we’re planning to get it painted for her in a couple of weeks.

It’s making me anxious to do some work on my own bedroom. We never did much beyond painting and moving our furniture in. I have 4 or 5 windows to dress, and I ordered a pair of panels and one curtain rod planning to hang it and make sure I like it before ordering the rest.

Would you believe, that was January 3rd!?!

I guess I should make sure they’re still available before we go to the effort of hanging it. If I can’t get more, it’s a moot point.

Anyway, how pathetic is that??? Usually we’re the type of people to get stuff done, but there’s something about that curtain… I guess it’s because Paul detests hanging curtains, and having bare windows in the bedroom doesn’t bother me like it doesn’t downstairs in our living areas. I’m just not in there enough, and I never think about it at a convenient time for him to help me with it. I think I’m going to put that on our priority list for tomorrow.

On that note, I better sign off here and get my run in before the sun gets too high. I’m loving how early it gets light out now, but I have to make a concerted effort to get out there before it gets too warm. Which is fine, because I like getting my exercise over with and getting on with my day, but I do have to keep an eye on the clock. If I wait too long, I end up walking more than running because the heat saps my energy.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Victoria Emerson BOGO Sale!

Hey there, friends! As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the sales are ramping up, and Victoria Emerson is running a sitewide BOGO free sale!

If you’re not familiar with Victoria Emerson, her handmade accessories are quality, affordable pieces that are perfect for giving (or getting!)

Her unique style is instantly recognizable, and yet she has so much variety to choose from, and one or two of her pieces are all you need to jazz up a basic outfit and make it special.

Her boho cuffs are probably my favorites. They add such a fun touch of glam to a casual outfit, and they’re perfect for dressing up a date night look.

This is her Alicante bracelet. Aren’t the mix of colors and materials so pretty? This bracelet has a mix of crystal, turquoise, agate, alloy, and seed beads; and I love the addition of the crystal chain on wool for added texture.

All of her boho cuffs have this pretty gold plating clasp that is engraved with her logo. In this case, mine is white gold.

I love the way her jewelry is designed to stand alone or work together with other pieces. Being the plain Jane that I am, I usually wear the boho cuffs alone, but I love how her double wrap bracelets look paired with a watch or another metal piece.

Here I’m wearing her Heart Double Wrap on White, which is a limited edition leather bracelet with silver (or gold) accent. I thought the white was so fresh and fun for summer.

And this watch is so elegant and understated. Like her bracelets, it stands alone beautifully, or you can add it to a few bracelets for an arm party! FYI, it also comes in gold, and each watch comes in a beautiful gift box along with a pouch for safe keeping.

Whether you want to update your accessory wardrobe or gift someone special this summer (or both!) the BOGO sale is a great time to do it.

If you need more ideas, this Tuscan beaded bracelet that I featured earlier this season is still available. These earth tones lend themselves to so many different outfits.

As is this Mendoza beaded boho bracelet with seed beads, crystal beads, a chain wrap, labradorite, coins, and weaved leather. I particularly like this one with white and denim, but of course it’s way more versatile than that.

And there’s also this double wrap bracelet on safari textured leather — a perfectly subtle way to incorporate animal print into your wardrobe this summer.

All of these bracelets are under $50 and so easy to wear.

Pink Peplum Top + Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale

Greetings, friends and happy almost-weekend! The MDW sales are already in full swing, and one of the best is the Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale!

I’ll be sharing my top picks below, but first I’ve got a summer outfit featuring this pretty pink woven peplum top.

This is one of the few pieces in the Gibson x The Motherchic collection that is still fully stocked, and it’s actually my favorite of the pieces I tried.

It pairs perfectly with white jeans, and I dressed it up with nude block heel sandals for a fun summer-night-out look.

The crinkled gauze top has a flattering v-neckline and a fun cuffed sleeve, and it’s lined above the peplum. It’s super easy to slip on and go.

It also comes in navy blue, and it runs true to size. (I have the small, for reference.)

I’ve shared these sandals before, but now they’re on sale! These are such nice quality and super comfortable right out of the box.

The first time I wore them, I walked all over town in them and was perfectly comfortable all night, and I didn’t get a single blister. This blush color is pretty, but they also come in white, tan, and snakeskin.

I accessorized the look with a gold layer necklace and coil wrap bracelet, and I carried my white leather crossbody with the gold hardware.

Outfit Details:

woven top // white jeans // sandals // bag // necklace // bracelet

Holiday & Seasonal

What To Get the Guy Who Has Everything

Every year when Father’s Day rolls around, I start the seemingly futile search to find a thoughtful gift for each of the special men in my life.

Both my dad and my husband pretty much have everything they need or want… at least within the parameters of my budget, and I’ve exhausted all the obvious gifts. I swear, my dad would probably need another set of fingers and toes to count all the golf shirts he’s received from me over the years, ha!

Ironically, he’s wearing one of them in the first picture I found when I went searching for some Father’s Day imagery.

(Note to self: take more pictures with Dad. I can’t believe I can’t find any more recent than this!)

Judging from the comments I receive this time of year and requests for gift ideas, I expect many of you are in the same boat when it comes to Father’s Day gift giving. We all want to honor the important men in our lives, but it gets harder and harder to come up with ideas as the years ago by.

Well, guess what? You don’t have to ask yourself the age-old question this year because Macy’s is coming to the rescue with a large variety of fragrance gift sets just in time for Father’s Day.

When I was invited to partner on this post, I decided to head over to my local Macy’s store to check out their offerings and choose a scent. The reviews on their website are very helpful, but I thought it would be nice to see their selection first-hand so I can report back.

Now, mind you, I don’t talk fragrance — the only notes I’m familiar with belong on a treble clef — so I was overwhelmed at first.

I fortunately happened upon an extremely knowledgeable sales associate who was able to make sense of my decidedly non-technical terminology, and he helped me choose a fragrance that is exactly what I had in mind.

I lost count of how many different fragrances I sampled, but I kept coming back to Versace Eau So Fraiche.

Evidently this scent has been around for several years, but it continues to be popular among men’s fragrances, and I can see why. Versace Eau So Fraiche has a clean, fresh scent with that “fresh from the shower” summer smell — perfect for this time of year.

This gift set that includes the full 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette Spray as well as a 5 oz. Bath & Shower Gel — both for the price of the solo 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette Spray!

Plus it comes in a beautiful box for gift giving.

Best of all, I’m all squared away for Father’s Day gifts, and it isn’t even June yet! *pats self on back*

Macy’s has over 250 of the world’s finest fragrances all under one roof, so if you’re looking for a thoughtful gift for a special dad in your life this Father’s Day, you are certain to find something perfect for him there.

If you’re unsure of what to buy, you can also take the Macy’s Fragrance Quiz to find his (or your) next scent!

Or save yourself the trouble, and order this one. I’m positive you won’t be disappointed.

Gift Guide for High School Graduates

Hello out there! I hope you all had a great weekend. I’ve had some requests for a gift guide for high school graduates, and I aim to please, so here we are!

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten //eleven // twelve // thirteen

My son graduated from high school last year, so I do have some experience with this topic, but only from a guy’s point of view, so I also asked my niece who is a sophomore in college for some suggestions.

Most kids probably prefer cash over gifts, but sometimes it’s nice to add a personal present along with a cash gift, and some people prefer not to give money, which is fine too.

For those working with a limited budget, I think an aptly chosen book always makes a nice gift — and a note written inside makes it an especially memorable keepsake. My son received several of these, and I know they were appreciated.

With that said, here are some fun gift ideas for high school grads to consider if you’re looking for something a little bit more original.

COFFEE TALK 05.19.19

Greetings and salutations on this fine Sunday morning in May! I’ve been trying to enjoy this beautiful spring weekend to its fullest. I’ve spent a lot of time reading on the deck, we visited with friends in our former neighborhood on Friday night, and last night we attended a backyard get-together with people from church where I got some much-needed education on gardening.

I have a lot of gardens to keep up with here, and they’re already getting overwhelmed by weeds. Part of my problem is, I’m not always sure what’s a weed and what’s a plant, ha! I guess I just need to dive in (or should I say dig in… #punny) and figure it out. If I pull out a healthy plant or two, it’s not the end of the world.

Our pool is open, as you can see from the picture above, and everyone has already been in but me. David and his friends went in for a quick dip a few weeks ago, and Paul and the girls were in for a while yesterday. It isn’t heated, so it’s pretty chilly at the moment (the water temp is around 72) but my family couldn’t be dissuaded. We’re having some friends over after church today, so we’ll see how brave they are.

I get a lot of questions about what I serve when I entertain, and I doubt I’ll ever write a dedicated post about it because it just isn’t that inventive, but I’ll tell you that I’m serving hamburgers and hot dogs. (I know. Hamburgers and hotdogs for summer… groundbreaking!)

In addition to that, we have asparagus to throw on the grill, and I picked up potato salad from the grocery store deli and a sesame Asian salad kit. I’ll probably put out a bag of potato chips, and I may whip up a batch of french onion dip with the Lipton’s onion soup mix and sour cream because I’m classy like that. We serve it with Frito’s Scoops — so easy and so good. It always goes in a flash.

Our guests are bringing drinks, fruit, buffalo chicken dip, and dessert. So yeah, as I said, nothing particularly original or inventive, but I like to keep things easy. If I was really ambitious, I’d whip up some deviled eggs this morning, but I’m not feeling it.

I’m not running today because I ran the past two days, and taking a day off is probably a good idea, but I think I’ll go for a walk before getting ready for church. I’m still sore from the dead lifts I did on Thursday, if you can believe it! I need to do some stretching, but I want to make sure I’m warmed up for it, and a walk should do the trick.

I appreciate the comments about exercise as we age on yesterday’s email. I know we have to adjust our expectations as we get older, and overdoing it is never a good thing, but there is a safe way to increase mileage and endurance.

Inconsistency can actually make you more prone to injury, and I’m very guilty of that — that and not stretching properly. I’ve been a lot better about stretching since living here because it takes at least 5 minutes for my shower to warm up, so I always stretch during that time.

But being consistent and gradual about increasing my mileage is my challenge. I have what you might call an all-or-nothing personality, or as my husband likes to say, She has two speeds: Stop and Go. When I get busy or overwhelmed by life or annoyed by the weather, and I tend to back off and lose my momentum.

I’m definitely not ready to let myself be satisfied with the status quo, so this summer my goal is to be very intentional about my workout regimen and make it a priority. All too often, exercise is the first thing to go when I get busy, and I’ve got to change that. Especially at this time of year with the weather being so nice and it being light out so early, I really have no excuse not to get out there.

In other words, I know what I need to do; I just need to do it.

Anyway, I share all this because I’m sure many of us are in the same boat. I hope it’s encouraging to hear that I struggle too, and if you need a little kick in the butt to put aside the excuses and get out there, consider this a firm but loving nudge.

On that note, I need to wrap this up so I can get my walk in and be to church on time. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Try On Haul + This Week’s Looks

Greetings, friends! I’m back with another try on haul, and I’m tacking on this week’s outfits to the end of the post.

I’ve been thinking I could make these two separate features each week, but I don’t know that you want two posts full of mirror selfies… or do you? Or maybe I should just do What I Wore every other week, since I don’t always have a ton of looks and they can be repetitive… I dunno, let me know if you have an opinion on the matter.

I have a lot of pictures this week, so let’s get started. I decided to combine some into one image, like I did with the summer shorts reviews. My hope is that it makes load time a little faster. Of course, it also makes them smaller, so again, let me know if you have a strong opinion on that.

Try On Haul: Nordstrom, Madewell, J.Crew & Boden

This week’s haul is very Nordstrom heavy, for no particular reason. In fact, it is very tank top heavy. Ha! I do this — I get in a mood and decide I need something, and then I order a ton of options. The thing is, when they arrive, I can’t remember why I thought I needed them. #mombrain

I think I was ordering these to have some options under cardigans, since I have added quite a few new cardigans to my wardrobe this spring. But not that it has turned warm here in Philly, I find myself wanting to wear them with denim shorts during the day. Either way, a good tank is a closet staple most women need, so hopefully this is helpful. I found a lot of good ones — but they’re all a little different, so it really depends on what you’re looking for.

Caslon Cotton Tank (size small) // Very stretchy, nice and thick, a classic tank that’s perfect for layering. It fits close to the body so it’s not very forgiving if you have some lumps and bumps. I’m wearing it here with suuuper high rise jeans (10″) so that helps with the lumps and bumps, but still, not my favorite. Read on…

Madewell 10″ High-Rise Skinny Jeans in Cordova Wash: Button-Front Edition (size 29) // Since I love my white Madewell jeans, I thought I’d try these. I’m learning that the 10″ is just too high for me, and the 9″ is just right. I’m never going to tuck into a 10″ rise, and with the button-fly, it really needs a tuck-in. Otherwise, I like the fit, although the wash is a little acid-wash looking for me, and the material is on the stiffer side and thicker than I prefer.

also wearing: Nine West Gianna slides (LOVE! See more of these in yesterday’s post.)

J.Crew Vintage Cotton Tank (size medium) // Another fairly classic tank, but this one fits a little looser and has the seam up the back to give it some added interest. It’s made of the same “vintage cotton” with the heathered texture as their vintage cotton v-neck tee so it’s a little thinner and has some drape to it. In other words, it’s more forgiving than the Caslon cotton tank.

Note that I am wearing a medium in this tank, as opposed to a small in the Caslon ones. I find I need to size up in J.Crew tees and tanks. Also, this tank is 35% off and comes in navy, black, and white.

Madewell 9″ Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans in Pure White (size 29) // I’ve shared these before, but since I’m wearing them here… These are currently my new go-to white jeans. So comfortable, great fit, not see-through. Highly recommend.

also wearing: Dolce Vita Women’s Prue Wedge Sandals

Caslon Muscle Tank in Olive Faded Large Camo Print

Caslon Muscle Tank

Caslon Muscle Tank in Yellow Ochre

Caslon Muscle Tank (size small) // For some reason, I really love a muscle tank. They have wider straps, and in this case, more of a u-neck, which is nice for a change. The material is thick enough not to be see-through, and the camo was a little stiff. The yellow not so much. I don’t luuuurve this tank, but I like it a lot.

It has a good fit, but it’s a little low under the arms. It comes in tons of solids and striped patterns, as well as the camo, but sizes are selling out. Bummer, I was going to order the ivory/red Faye stripe. Wouldn’t that be so cute with jean shorts for the 4th of July?

Note: these come in plus sizes.

also wearing: Mother Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans with Tory Burch Miller Sandals

Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank

Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank

Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank (size small) // Now THIS tank, I luuuuurve. Super soft modal blend, nice drape, slightly racer-back so bra straps show, but not a deal breaker because I love the fabric. It’s thinner than the Caslon ones, but not see-through.

I’m keeping both of these. I like the fit of the small, but I can also see sizing up to a medium for a more relaxed fit and more drape. I probably should at least try the mediums, but I already wore both of these, so I’m just going to have to remember to hang them to dry so they don’t shrink. The grey/white stripe looks really good under a navy or pink cardigan. I wore it that way earlier in the week. (See the What I Wore section below.)

also wearing: Mother Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans with Tory Burch Miller Sandals (top) and Madewell 9″ Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans with Dolce Vita Women’s Prue Wedge Sandals (bottom)

Dolce Vita Women’s Prue Wedge Sandal (size 8) // Super cute, love the caged upper with subtle snakeskin print, but they rubbed my pinky toe as soon as I put them on, and I could tell they weren’t going to work for me.

Otherwise, they’re very comfortable — I just think it’s the way they’re cut in combination with my square-ish feet. Life is too short to wear shoes that hurt, so they went right back.

Caslon Lace Trim Tank (size small) // Unfortunately this top is almost sold out. You also may have seen it featured in yesterday’s post. It’s a little boxy, but I like the details a lot.

also wearing: Madewell 9″ Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans with Dolce Vita Noor Sandals (top) and Mother Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans with Tory Burch Miller Sandals (bottom)

J.Crew Mercantile Featherweight slub cotton T-shirt

J.Crew Mercantile Featherweight slub cotton T-shirt (size medium) // I ordered this at someone’s recommendation, and I’m not sure why I didn’t order the white. I’m going to have to start making notes when I order things because I can’t seem to remember what I was ordering them for. Any-Who. This is what I would call a very basic v-neck tee. It’s soft and stretchy, a good weight, not see-through, not stiff, classic v-neck, classic sleeve length, straight hem, no boob pocket, and on the longer side.

Why don’t I love it? I don’t know. Maybe it’s just too basic. I lived in t-shirts like this in the early 2000’s when I was having babies, although they were shorter. But if you want a very basic v-neck tee in a longer length, this is the one for you!

also wearing: Madewell 10″ High-Rise Skinny Jeans with Nine West Gianna slides

HALE Women's Kenna Stunner Mid Rise Skinny Jeans

HALE Women's Kenna Stunner Mid Rise Skinny Jean

HALE Women’s Kenna Stunner Mid Rise Skinny Jeans (size 29) // These jeans are designed by Adriano Goldschmied, the genius behind AG jeans, so of course I had to try them! Granted, I only tried one style, but I’m not loving these.

The wash is pretty basic looking, they fit really loose for skinnies, and while the rear pockets are placed well, they’re rather large — not at all like the magic pockets on my beloved AG jeans. That said, they’re not horrible, and for the price, I’d be willing to try other styles.

also wearing: J.Crew Mercantile Featherweight slub cotton T-shirt with Nine West Gianna slides

Gibson x The Motherchic Avalon Faux Wrap Jersey Dress

Gibson x The Motherchic Avalon Faux Wrap Jersey Dress

Gibson x The Motherchic Avalon Faux Wrap Jersey Dress (size small) // This is such a cute dress, although it probably looks better on women without as much going on up top. I love how it’s cut nice and high under the arms, and that it’s a faux wrap style so it’s sewn together at the waist, and there’s a snap closer over the chest. It’s on the shorter side, though, so that is something to keep in mind. I’m 5’5″ for reference.

also wearing: Nine West Gianna slides

Boden Melinda Jersey Dress in Navy (size 8) // Yes, I bought it in navy!!! I love it so much in the scattered fruit print, but prints are memorable, and I think the solid navy will be a great closet basic to have for a long time. I did find this to fit a tad smaller than the print that I have, and I’m not sure why. It’s still okay, but I definitely won’t put it through the dryer.

also wearing: Dolce Vita Noor Sandals

Gibson x Living in Yellow Willow Tiered Peplum Top

Gibson x Living in Yellow Willow Tiered Peplum Top (size small) // This is such a fun and flirty top. There are only a few sizes left, but it appears to have had some restocks since I posted on my Instagram a couple days ago.

also wearing: Madewell 9″ Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans with Dolce Vita Noor Sandals

1901 Ruffle Sleeve Cotton Blend Top with 1901 Print Faille Shorts

1901 Ruffle Sleeve Cotton Blend Top (size small) // This top is a little small on me. I think it’s hard to see in pictures, but definitely was noticeable in real life. I also don’t think the ruffle sleeves do anything for me because I have pretty wide, square shoulders and then the chest issue, but pear-shaped ladies or those who are smaller on top might really like this one.

1901 Print Faille Shorts (size 8) // These shorts run really small. They were tight through the waist, and the front pockets gaped open (you can see a bit on the right side where I’m holding my phone.) They’re also rather wide through the thigh, so again, pear-shaped ladies or those with thicker legs may like these. The print is really fun.

What I Wore This Week

Alrighty! I will make these quick b/c it is getting late! I took a break from finishing this post so I could get my run in before it got too hot outside. (I can’t believe I’m actually worried about it getting too hot. A few days ago I thought I’d never be warm again!)

I wore this to a Mother’s Day brunch last Saturday with some ladies at church. It was a beautiful morning, before all the rain came in.

I wore this to church on Sunday for Mother’s Day. It was nasty, cold, and rainy all day. Bleh. Pretty much the way I feel about this outfit. It looks really drab.

sweater (old) // pants (old) // shoes // tank

And then I changed into this that afternoon to a family gathering. I could have stayed in what I was wearing, but I’m more comfortable in jeans, and I wanted an excuse to wear this jacket again, ha! And also, how cute are these booties? I’ve had them for weeks and haven’t had a chance to wear them.

This is what I wore on Monday — another dreary, rainy, chilly day — but this picture was taken a while back. I didn’t go anywhere, so I didn’t do my hair and makeup.

Not sure what happened to Tuesday, but this was Wednesday. I had a hair appointment, and while the weather was warming up, I knew I’d be cold inside the salon so I wore this cashmere cardigan.

And finally… Thursday! The weather is warming up, and it feels like summer may actually be right around the corner. I wore this in the afternoon so I could sit outside and get some sun. I also wore this tank with jeans and my Bobeau cardigan to run some errands earlier in the day, but I guess I never got a picture.

Treasure & Bond U-Neck Tank // BlankNYC denim shorts // TB Millers

And this was yesterday evening. I threw this on to hang out with friends on their patio. I actually wore different shorts, but this picture was from a try-on sesh a few weeks ago so I posted it instead of taking a new one.

And that’s a wrap! Whew!!!

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

2 Memorial Day Outfits #FashionFriday

Happy Friday, friends! I’m super excited to be teaming up today with Tania from 50 Is Not Old to share some Memorial Day style inspiration!

I styled two outfits — one that’s on the more casual side and a more dressed-up look for when you want to look polished yet festive for this inaugural summer holiday!

If you don’t know Tania, she is a hoot. I absolutely love to read her posts. Not only does she share wearable fashion for women over 50, but she always spins a story and has such a way with words. She also lives in southwestern Virginia near where I grew up, so I’ve always felt a special bond with her. If you’re not familiar with her blog, definitely check it out!

Okay, first up, a casual look for Memorial Day picnics and barbecues!

Fun fact: I hate iced tea. Ha! But doesn’t it look so cool and refreshing in these pictures???

This is an easy breezy casual look for those in warmer climates who get hot weather on Memorial Day. (Here in Philly, it can go either way. I remember many a Memorial Day cookout when I was glad for long pants and a sweater, but I’m hoping to get to wear one of these outfits this year!)

Anyway! This lace trim tank is from Nordstrom’s Caslon brand, so it’s good quality at a moderate price point. I love the embroidered lace and fringe hem for a bit of a boho vibe.

The white is selling out, but it also comes 3 other colors. It’s true to size for Caslon; I’m wearing a small.

I paired this top with denim shorts because a white top with denim shorts is a Memorial Day match made in heaven, wouldn’t you say?

In case you missed it, I reviewed over 20 pairs of shorts yesterday, and these were one of the ones that made the cut. I have a feeling I’m going to be living in these shorts this summer.

I like the frayed cuff and the versatile mid-indigo wash. They fit close to the leg without being tight, and they have just enough stretch to be comfortable without bagging out on you.

They have a comfortable 9″ rise and a 5″ inseam, which is pretty much a universally flattering length, and they run true to size; I have the 29. Oh, and right now they’re 25% off at Lord & Taylor!

And then how fun are these toe-loop slide sandals?

At just $35, they’re a fun way to participate in the snakeskin print trend without making a longterm commitment, and they really jazz up a simple summer look.

They are a nice, soft leather, which is nice, but the footbed is pretty stiff. Still, I find them easy to walk in, and if you don’t need arch support, they’re quite comfortable. They’re also true to size; I’m wearing the 8.

Whether I get to wear this on Memorial Day or not, it’s an easy, casual outfit that I’ll be able to wear all summer long, plus I can mix and match these pieces for even more outfit options.

This top also looks great with bluejeans or colored denim, the sandals look great with everything from dresses and skirts to shorts and jeans, and of course these shorts are a summer closet staple.

Outfit Details:

lace trim tank | frayed cuff jean shorts | snakeskin sandals | earrings | bracelet | sunnies

Next up, a slightly more dressed-up summer look that will take you from Memorial Day to Labor Day and everywhere in between.

I love navy and white for patriotic holidays — just add a red mani/pedi, and you’re all set! Of course, red earrings or sandals would also be fun.

I prefer to keep my outfits understated on patriotic holidays — you’ll never find me decked out in the American flag — but a pop of red in a blue and white outfit is fun. I wish I’d thought about that before we shot this look, but I’m sure you can use your imagination.

I shared this roll cuff linen tee in last weekend’s try-on haul, and it just went on sale! It has a boxy shape with the perfect drape and the perfect cuffed sleeves.

You have to be careful with short sleeves — especially if you’re busty and trying not to draw attention to that feature. Something about the diagonal cut of these sleeves seems to be slimming and draws attention away from the chest and to the arms.

For size reference, I’m wearing the medium, so if you’re ordering this, I’d size up or go with the larger of your two “normal sizes.”

I also added this fun string macrame ring handle bag to this look. Crochet and string bags are a big trend this spring, and like the snakeskin sandals, this bag is a fun way to participate without making a big investment.

I actually meant to carry this bag with the jean shorts and lace trim tee above, but I forgot! I feel like the boho style looks a little better with the more casual outfit, but it works here too.

I’ve had these destructed crop skinnies for several years, and they’re still going strong. I know not everyone appreciates the distressing, but I’ve always loved the shredded knees and released raw hem on these. It’s something about the way it adds texture to an outfit and gives an edgy vibe to the pristine white denim.

These jeans are also on sale right now at Nordstrom. These are true to size, or size up if in between.

I accessorized with this gold layer necklace — a new addition to my jewelry wardrobe. It’s from Stella & Dot, and I love the brushed gold finish. It’s a little more casual than the bright gold I tend to wear.

My gold and white coil wrap bracelet is also from Stella & Dot. I tend to wear it a lot in spring and summer.

Finally, these shoes… I am so in love with these sandals!

There are a lot of iterations of this style of sandal, thanks to the iconic Hermes Oran, but this is by far the best one I’ve seen yet. I’ve not really cared much for the Oran and the Steven dupe, but I think these are so pretty.

This camel is the perfect neutral, and I adore the way they designed the strap across the foot, as well as the blunted toe. The leather is beautiful, and they look and feel more expensive than they are.

I just wish they would do an embossed logo in the footbed rather than the sewn-on kind, but I suppose that’s one way they keep the price point under $100.

These sandals also come in white and yellow. I have the white ones too, and I was going to send one pair back when I decided which I like better, but I’ve got half a mind to keep both. I like them that much!

So to wrap this up! I basically just shopped my closet and put together some of my new and old summer wardrobe favorites to come up with these simple but polished looks. The addition of the trendy pieces wasn’t necessary, but it’s a fun way to keep these classic looks current without spending a lot.

I hope these two looks give you some spring and summer style inspiration, whatever your Memorial Day plans may hold.

Outfit Details:
