Try-On Haul + Weekend Sale Picks

Happy weekend, friends! I’ve got a small try-on haul today, plus I rounded up some of my top weekend sale picks.

And speaking of sale picks, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Preview goes live online this Friday, 7/24!!!

In lieu of the usual print catalog, this year Nordstrom is giving everyone the ability to preview all sale items online so you have plenty of time to save your favorites to your Wish List, and you can check out faster when it’s time to shop.

I’ll be logging on bright and early Friday morning to scour the sale and pull up my top picks, and of course I will share them all with you! Be sure you’re signed up for my emails so you get notified as soon as my post goes live. I’ll also be sharing the post in my private Facebook Group.

Don’t miss my post on How to Prepare for the 2020 #NSale.

Meanwhile, here are a few things I’ve ordered recently.

Try-On Haul: Nordstrom, Old Navy & Amazon

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds, with a slight hourglass shape. My usual sizes are a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

Daily Ritual Fine Rib Wide-Leg Jumpsuit $33.92 Prime + Free Returns

I thought this jumpsuit looked like a fun one-and-done piece for long days working from home, and I’m really impressed with the fit and feel!

I’m wearing the small, and it’s a tad snug across the bum, but I think it’s supposed to fit this way. If I sized up, the legs would be way too wide, but I definitely need my Soma Vanishing 360 Hipsters with this.

I like the cropped length a lot, and the cut of the legs helps to offset wider hips.

You can adjust the waist to where you want it, and it stays put. I like how the top “blouses out” a bit over the waistband.

It fits nicely around the arms, the straps are wide enough to cover a regular bra, and the deep scoop neck is flattering but not so low that it sacrifices modesty. And the price is right too!

STYLE TIP: I like wearing brown shoes with a black outfit. It’s a tad unexpected, and it keeps the look a little more casual and free-spirited. A metallic would be pretty too, but a tad dressier.

I also like the barely-there styling of these sandals with the jumpsuit. They keep the look light and breezy, whereas a clunkier shoe would weigh it down.

Halogen Cap Sleeve Blouse $49

I have this top in other prints, but I thought this coral with the loose floral print was so fun for summer. It pairs beautifully with dark wash jeans, or you could wear it with navy pants for work wear.

Kut from the Kloth Lauren Straight Leg Jeans in Ability Wash $79.00 $35.55 (55% off)

These jeans aren’t new to most of you, but this is a darker wash that I really like. Unfortunately, they are mostly sold out at Nordstrom, but you may be able to snag your size.

There are more sizes on the Kut from the Kloth website, but unfortunately not on sale.

They have a really nice fit and a slim, straight cut. The inseam is 25″ so they’re definitely a crop.

I don’t think the fading is as noticeable in person as it is in these pictures, but the wash definitely has some gradient to it.

They’re true to size, or size down if in between. I’m in the 4, but they are verrrry snug in the waist.

They did stretch some as I wore them around one afternoon this week, so I’m glad I sized down, but I could probably get away with the 6 and not have as much of a muffin top.

Vince Weekend Cashmere Sweater $295.00 $89.99 (69% off)

Okay, switching gears… no, the #NSale isn’t here yet. But sometimes I snap up a winter sweater in the summertime when I see a really good deal.

I would much rather pay $89 for a Vince sweater in the off-season than full price for a Halogen cashmere sweater in October. It’s the same price, but the difference in quality is significant.

This one has a slightly slouchy fit and such a nice drape, perfect for front-tucking, and the knit is thick and soft and sublime.

Crap, crap, crap. This sold out in the sale colors.

Well, I’m showing you anyway because when sharing more expensive pieces, I often make the disclaimer, “I got it on sale…”

So when I share this sweater this winter and link to a similar one that is $295, here is proof that I got it for well under $100.

also wearing: Madewell high waist crop skinnies and similar espadrilles

Old Navy Sleeveless Ruched V-Neck Top $26.99 $15.00 + 20% Off

I had high hopes for this top from Old Navy, but it is sooooo big! The arm holes are huge. I definitely need the XS.

I really like the color palette, though, and the material is very thin and cool and comfortable without being see-through.

I would recommend a front-tuck, but definitely size down.

VERDICT: Returning, but I would like to see it in the XS.

also wearing: Madewell high waist crop skinnies and similar Nine West sandals

Old Navy Boho Tassel-Tie Top $20.00 + 20% Off

I already styled this one for yesterday’s post, but I have these pictures so I figured I’d share. This top is a great price, and it’s really cute on.

Unlike the one above, this one runs true to size, and it comes in petite and tall as well. The armholes are cut perfectly too — they don’t gape or show your bra.

And here’s a rear view… pardon my janky ponytail.

The material is thin and soft with a nice drape. Even untucked, from the side, it doesn’t look too terribly voluminous. It’s 100% viscose rayon so you’ll definitely want to line dry.

I also like it with a front tuck.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: Madewell high waist crop skinnies and similar Nine West sandals

Old Navy Mid-Rise Everyday Patterned Twill Shorts $24.99 $20 + 20% Off

I wasn’t expecting much from these shorts, as I typically find twill shorts are cut too wide for my liking, but these are actually very nice.

The rear view checks out too!

I think this floral camo print is fun, or if you prefer a more classic print, they also come in a blue gingham.

They’re made of a soft-washed cotton twill, with a bit stretch, and they have a soft poplin-lined waistband for added comfort. The inseam is 5″ and I’m wearing my usual size 6.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: Madewell Tomboy V-Neck Tank and Birkenstock Madrid sandals

And a few necklaces…

I got on a necklace buying spree this week, and I apologize in advance for the terrifying close-ups of my face. Of course, I pick the one day I did minimal makeup to take close-ups. (And yes, I’m working on that melasma… #gettingoldisfun)

Lucky Brand Gold-Tone Horn Pendant Convertible Beaded Layer Necklace $39.00 Sale $27.30 (30% off)

Layering delicate necklaces is very much a trend right now, and I’m a huge fan of the ones that come already assembled for you.

This is one of those that you can take apart or wear them all together, and I think the colors are so pretty for summertime. It’s 14-1/2″ with a 2″ extender, so you can play around with the length to make it work with different tops.

Rachel Roy Gold-Tone Disc Two-Row Necklace $32.00 Sale $22.40 (30% off)

This one is all gold, but it has a lot of shine to it. Very pretty. It’s 18″ with a 2″ extender, so again, you can adjust the length to make it work for you.

Kendra Scott Scarlet Gold Collar Necklace In Multi $78

This one is a single strand, and it’s pricer than the other two, but it is absolutely gorgeous in person. It really catches the eye.

It has an 18″ chain, and it really isn’t designed to be adjustable, but there is a drop in the back… I didn’t manage to get a shot of that. I really like that extra detail, though.

And of course, you can layer it with other pieces if you want. Here, I layered it with two Gorjana necklaces I’ve had for a while — her Super Star necklace and this little Chloe pendant.

Weekend Sale Picks

J.Crew is doing 50% off summer’s greatest hits with code GREAT.

I’m crushing on these metallic espadrilles… the perfect go-with-everything summer wedge sandal. Beyond that, I’ll let you peruse the sale styles. There are some good basics to be had, but sizes are rather picked over at this point.

Kate Spade has select Margaux styles over 50% off with code PERFECT. I love this pale vellum color for spring and summer.

Madewell is doing an extra 40% off Sale Styles with code GIANT.

My go-to white skinnies are included, and these off-black raw hem skinnies are very similar to this pair that I got back in the spring. Such a good off-black wash.

And I’m thinking of ordering these shorts. I don’t have any black denim shorts, and I think they’d be so cute with my new P448 sneaks (a birthday gift from my mom). Remember, shipping and returns are free for Madewell Insiders.

Nordstrom is running a Summer Clearance Sale. Save an additional 25% off, for a total saving of up to 70%!

Talbots has 50% off all of their T by Talbots line this weekend. These styles are more sporty and casual than their regular line, but they’re still the same great quality.

White House Black Market is running their Semi-Annual Sale. You can save 50% off select sale styles and 60% off 3+ sale styles.

Boho Chic Summer Style

Happy Friday, friends! Cheers to another weekend! 🥂 I’m getting in touch with my boho side today.

Okay, let’s be honest. I don’t have much of a boho side, but sometimes it’s fun to change it up a bit, and there are ways to make boho look a little more refined and classic.

I found this floral peasant-style tassel tie top at Old Navy, and I thought the print was fresh and fun. It’s also a great price — it comes down to $18 in cart!

A voluminous top like this can add visual weight to those of us who are larger on top; but in this case, the V-neck helps de-emphasize the chest, and a front-tuck helps define my waist.

The flutter sleeves are feminine and flirty, and the armholes don’t gape or show your bra. You can tie the tassels, but I prefer to leave them open so they create a flattering V-neckline.

If personal your style leans more towards the boho side, you might wear this top with a pair of flares and Birks, but I paired it with crisp white denim shorts.

These shorts are casual enough to keep the look carefree and easy, but still clean and classic.

If you like the look but not the price tag, J.Crew has a similar pair for less, and J.Crew Factory has this pair at an even lower price.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE >> 5 Favorites: White Shorts

I had fun with my shoes and accessories.

This rattan crossbody adds an earthy touch and is perfect for casual summer looks. It’s more playful and fun than my usual leather tote or structured crossbody.

And I like how the cork layer on these platform sandals ties in the brown from my rattan bag, and the white leather keeps the look crisp and clean. They also come in blush, cognac, and black.

These sandals are very comfortable, and they have good support for finicky feet. They run true to size, and they’re 40% off right now!

For jewelry, I wore a Lucky Brand bracelet and earrings, along with my initial pendant necklace.

Lucky Brand is my go-to for casual fashion jewelry that won’t break the budget, and it works particularly well with the boho chic vibe I’m going for here.

I borrowed my sunglasses from Alison, so I don’t have a link, but I like how the dark wire frames complement this look.

Outfit Details:

Old Navy tassel tie top // AG Hailey jean shorts // Steve Madden platform sandals // rattan crossbody // Lucky Brand bracelet and earrings // initial pendant necklace

If you’re looking for a few more Old Navy items to get to that $50 free shipping minimum, this slub-knit tee is super cute in the pink camo and indigo tie dye, this linen blend henley has been popular among JLS readers this summer, and I just got these shorts in the floral camo, and they’re really good!

Also, my 16-y/o daughter has this smocked slub knit maxi dress, and it’s super cute on her. Size up, she has it in the small.

What I Wore Lately Vol. 18

Last week, many of you said you wouldn’t mind seeing these posts weekly, so today I’m sharing what I wore lately. This post basically answers a question I get a lot: But what do you really wear?

Hint: I pretty much wear the outfits I share in dedicated outfit posts, or at least something like that. I don’t keep it all because I don’t need it all, but I only share outfits that I like and would wear in my daily life.

In these posts, I try to share where I wore each look and point out the features that I like about certain pieces. Sometimes I talk about how I put each outfit together, and even show the “outfit evolution” when I try a few things before making my final decision about what to wear.

I am no fashion expert, nor does fashion necessarily come easily to me. I’m just a woman who likes clothes, trying to figure it all out and over-sharing on the internet!

With that all said, here’s what I wore this week.

What I Wore Lately

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds-ish, with a slight hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

This first outfit is what I wore last Wednesday to visit my friendly gastroenterologist.

I threw on this pink linen tank with dark wash skinnies, and then I added my snake print sandals for a bit of pattern and texture. I kept my jewelry simple with Yurman hoops and a pair of Lagos bracelets.

These jeans have been restocked in a few sizes; I love the dark rinse and the 27″ inseam. They run TTS; I have my usual size 28.

pink Sanctuary tank // rag & bone Cate skinnies // Sam Edelman sandals

The next day, I had PT and then a workout appointment, so I wore workout gear all day.

I’m wearing a medium in this Zella tee, but I recently purchased a different color in a small, and I prefer the fit of the small. Although, as you can see, sizing up for a more relaxed fit works too.

I still love and adore these Vuori joggers. Definitely size up in these, though. I’m wearing the medium.

And finally, these P448 sneakers were a birthday gift from my mom, and I had to size up. I have the 38 in my other pair, but I needed a 39 in these.

Zella t-shirt // Vuori joggers // P448 sneakers (also at Nordstrom)

It rained all day Friday, and I wore this lightweight striped sweater with my Paige straight ankle jeans.

I got these jeans on a 40% off sale, and I’m hoping they go back on sale soon! I’m keeping an eye on them.

I had to take my daughter to the orthodontist, so I threw on cute shoes for that. Otherwise, I wore slippers all day.

stripe sweater // Paige jeans (also at Verishop with free 2-day shipping and free returns) // Tory Burch sandals (also at Nordstrom) // Lucky Brand earrings

Happily, the weather cleared up on Saturday. I worked in the morning, and then Paul and I spent the afternoon in the pool. Afterwards, we went over to a friends’ patio for drinks to celebrate his birthday (the friend’s birthday, not Paul’s).

I wore this pink top again, but this time I wore jean shorts, and I ended up switching into these Ann Taylor cork sandals. My feet were hurting and I thought the 1″ heel would help, plus they looked a little dressier.

I really wanted to wear white shorts, but I’ve worn white shorts the last few times I got together with this group of people, so I wore jean shorts instead. Like anyone cares… ha! (Yes, I think about these things.)

pink Sanctuary tank // Kut from the Kloth denim shorts (also at Evereve) // Sam Edelman sandals

We went to church on Sunday, and I wore my white jeans with this pink Talbots sweater.

You guys, this sweater is now marked down to $22.49, and these jeans come down to $35.99 with code GIANT. FYI, they’re final sale.

Both the sweater and jeans run TTS; I have the small and 28, respectively.

Talbots sweater // Madewell jeans (also at Nordstrom) // Nine West slides (similar) // Kendra Scott hoops and bracelet (20% off)

Later that evening, we went out to dinner. I had already taken off my church clothes, and I didn’t feel like wearing jeans to dinner when it was so hot out, so I put on these utility shorts and funnel neck tank with strappy block heel sandals.

These sandals are 30% off, by the way.

I love the look, but I felt a little extra wearing heels with shorts for a casual family dinner.

I decided to go with my snake print flats, and I felt more comfortable that way, but the top… I dunno. As much as I want to like it, it just seems to really draw attention to my chest.

I ended up switching into this one, which is the exact same fabric and cut, except with a round neck and cap sleeves. I’m not sure why it makes such a difference, but I did feel more comfortable in this.

Also, these shorts are $29, and they also come in olive green.

When we were walking over to the restaurant, I spotted this wall, so we stopped for a quick Instagram photo.

cap sleeve tee // utility shorts (olive option) // sandals // sunnies (similar for less) // similar crossbody // Victoria Emerson boho cuff

I had a photo shoot on Monday, and I wore this afterwards to Trader Joe’s and Target.

These jeans are selling out, but they’re on sale, and I really like this darker wash. There are more sizes at the Kut from the Kloth website, but they aren’t on sale over there.

Kut from the Kloth jeans (on sale at Nordstrom) // Sam Edelman sandals (also at Zappo’s) // Kendra Scott necklace and earrings

And yesterday I had PT, followed by a mani/pedi… bliss! I went with a bright coral on my hands and feet this time. #byebyewhite

Zella tee (old) // Lululemon Align joggers // Birks (also at Nordstrom)

And that’s it for this week. I hope yours is going well so far. I’ll be back tomorrow with my Nordstrom Clearance Sale finds!

5 Favorites: White Shorts

Happy Monday, my friends! It’s been a while since I’ve done a 5 Favorites post, and I’ve had some requests for a white shorts roundup, so I thought I’d do my 5 Favorite White Shorts.

I’m wearing white shorts more than ever right now, due to Covid and most of our dining and entertaining being outside.

It’s usually too hot to wear my go-to white jeans, and sometimes dresses feel fussy. White shorts with a pretty top and sandals is my summer going-out uniform right now. For this reason, I’ve amassed quite a collection!

I love that all different lengths of shorts are trending right now. It lends more variety to my wardrobe, especially when I’m wearing shorts so much.

My 5 Favorite White Shorts {Summer 2020}

#1. J.Crew Denim short in white

These are the most affordable/well-stocked/versatile white shorts of the bunch.

I realize not everyone cares for the shorter lengths, but I like these because they’re just long enough to cover the widest part of my hips (and the worst of my cellulite, if I’m keeping it real…) and still short enough to look youthful.

Plus, these shorts just fit well. They flatter the rear, they aren’t super wide in the leg opening (which can look frumpy) and the rise is just high enough to be comfortable and on trend. They also have sewn cuffs, so they stay in place.

The raw edge definitely gives them a more playful, casual vibe, but I’ve still been known to dress them up a bit with a blouse and metallic sandals to entertain friends in our backyard.

These shorts run true to size; I’m wearing my usual 28.

They rarely go on sale, but this pair at J.Crew Factory is almost identical, if you’re looking for a similar style for less.

#2. AG Jeans Hailey Mid-Rise Slouchy Cuffed Denim Shorts

These are probably my longest running favorites. I found a picture of me wearing a pair of these back in 2015!

Easy Summer Outfit: Green Slouchy Linen Tee + White Boyfriend Shorts

I just replaced them this season with this pair without the distressing.

These are very similar in style and fit to the J.Crew pair. In fact, for that reason, I haven’t worn these as often as I typically would because the J.Crew pair is more affordable, and I try to link less expensive options when I can.

The fabric on AG pair is slightly thicker and more substantial, and the rear pockets are slightly smaller. I compared, and the shorts both have a 3.5″ inseam, so the length is about identical.

Both have the raw, cuffed hems that are sewn in place, but I noticed in comparing the two pairs that the AG pair stays in place better, especially in the back, whereas the hem on the J.Crew pair seems to drag a bit. I expect it’s due to the sturdier fabric on the AG pair.

The AG Hailey runs true to size, and you can find them at Nordstrom, Saks and Zappo’s.

If you like higher end denim, another similar pair that I’ve heard a lot of chatter about is the Paige Jimmy. I’m tempted to order them to try and compare, but I don’t need them so I’m trying to resist the temptation.

#3. Paige Jax Roll Cuff Denim Bermuda Shorts

I’ve surprised even myself by liking these Bermuda shorts so much. I’ve often said the Bermuda a style I can’t really wear, although I do recall loving this pair of Joe’s cuffed jean shorts so much that I bought them twice when they wore out.

This picture is also from 2015… I’m dying to give that long, boxy top a front-tuck. I guess it wasn’t a thing yet.

coral striped tank + denim Bermuda shorts

I did front-tuck this one, though, so the trend must have been gaining ground around that time.

tee with cuffed denim Bermuda shorts

Haha, here’s another… ugh, that shirt! 🤦🏻‍♀️

This shirt is too long. #nope

Also, hello, excessive skin smoothing! #yoiks

And let’s just not talk about my short hair.

Sorry, I digress. Sometimes I fall down the rabbit hole when looking at old pictures.

Anyway, if you like Bermudas, the Paige Jax has a narrower leg opening than most, which is what keeps them looking chic and sophisticated rather than frumpy-dumpy, although if I had my way, they would be even narrower.

The quality is evident in the fabric and the fit through the rear. They do have a lower rise than I prefer, at 9 1/2″, but it’s not a deal breaker.

These shorts run true to size; and you can find them at Saks, Nordstrom, and Zappo’s.

#4. Wit & Wisdom Ab-Solution Cuffed White Shorts 7″

Okay, I’m really sorry, y’all. These are almost totally gone, and no one else carries Wit & Wisdom, that I know of, but I’ve been wearing these a lot lately.

They have the 5-pocket styling of typical denim shorts, but the material is lightweight and more like a chino. The un-cuffed length is 7″, but I like to cuff them so they’re more like 4.5 or 5″.

I wear these a lot with cute tops and sandals out to dinner because they’re a little more refined than the J.Crew and AG pairs.

They’re true to size, and they’re only available at Nordstrom.

#5. Wit & Wisdom Ab-Solution White Denim Shorts 9″

These are very similar to the ones above, just longer, and they HAVE been restocked recently!

The good news is, if you prefer the length of the pair above, you could buy these and hem them, or cut them off and cuff them to the length you like.

I wear these a lot for going out to eat and that sort of thing. They’re a little shorter than the Paige Jax, and a little longer than the other Wit & Wisdom pair.

They have a 9″ un-cuffed inseam, and because they’re not sewn into place, you can cuff them however you like.

If I’m being picky, these are a little wider in the leg opening than I prefer, but it’s not a deal breaker, especially at this price.

These are true to size, and you can find them at Nordstrom.

Would you like to see more of these posts? I’m thinking of updating my 5 Favorite Summer  Sandals next!

Coffee Talk 07.12.20

Good morning! It is sunny and beautiful here today, and we’ll be headed out to church in a bit. It *almost* feels like normal times, except I know when I get to church, we will all be wearing masks and sitting in family groupings spaced 6 feet apart.

Oh, well. At least we’re able to meet and worship together.

We got together with friends last night outdoors on their patio, and it was nice to get a change of scenery… and to not be the ones hosting and cleaning up afterwards, let’s be honest!

Someone asked in the comments of my Q&A yesterday how my friends feel about me mentioning them on the blog. I haven’t asked, so I don’t really know! I never mention names, though, so I don’t think they care. And my closest friends aren’t regular blog readers, that I’m aware of.

I do have family members and people from church who read along (hi! 👋🏻) but again, I try not to be specific about who I’m with when I mention what’s going on in my life.

It is a little weird, though, I will admit. When I’m out and about, I’m never sure who has read what I wrote or not; and when I’m talking to them what’s going on in my life, sometimes they’ve already read it here or in my daily email.

Then there are the times when I ask first if they read it, so I’m not repeating myself, and they apologize because they haven’t read my blog.

My standard line has always been, “Not a requirement for friendship!” I mean, I certainly don’t expect my friends to follow my blog, lol!

Anywho.

We got word this week that my son’s college is going to continue remote learning through the fall 2020 semester. UGH.

I think it’s probably the right and necessary decision, but it’s one more semester that he’s losing from his college experience, which already feels so short. I cannot believe he’s going to be a junior this year!

We are paying for his apartment whether he lives there or not, so he may end up spending some time there even though classes will all be remote. At least he can hang out with his friends and have some semblance of independence.

He has his own bedroom in the apartment, and he’s only 30 minutes from home, so he won’t be coming in contact with tons of kids, and I can get to him if I need to.

It’s funny, when he chose a college so close to home, I wasn’t pleased. I wanted him to spread his wings a bit, but now that Covid is becoming a defining factor in his college experience, I’m so glad to have him close to home where I can get to him if need be.

I guess it just goes to show, our plans are not always the best plans.

Our public school district still hasn’t made any definite decisions about how to handle the fall semester, but as of right now, sports and marching band practices are starting up on schedule, with lots of extra safety measures in place.

They’re talking about doing a hybrid approach of some sort, so they can reduce the amount of kids and teachers in the building at any one time, but the kids can still get some face time with teachers and classmates. And I believe there will be an option for full-time remote learning for those who don’t feel comfortable sending their kids back to school just yet.

My younger daughter, who is an upcoming freshman this year, wants to go to school if it’s open, so we’re going to let her.

She’s the one who’s in the marching band, and she’s been so looking forward to that. They’ve made all kinds of modifications and put safety measures in place, so I’m hoping it works out and they can get a full season in, but only time will tell.

My older daughter, for anyone keeping track, will be a high school senior this year. She’s been using a cyber charter school since 8th grade, so she’s already accustomed to remote learning and perfectly happy to continue with that.

Once again, I’m grateful for how the Covid timing has all worked out for our family. C already doesn’t have the typical high school experience, so she doesn’t care if her senior year is all out of whack. And D is missing a chunk of his college experience, but at least it’s in the middle of it. Hopefully he will get to have a “normal” senior year.

R has definitely missed out on the most, with her 8th grade year getting cut short, and all the exciting events and trips canceled. Hopefully she will get a fairly normal high school experience, once we get Covid under control.

So anyway! That’s where we are.

I know there are others who are experiencing a much different Covid world than I am, and I don’t take my blessings for granted.

Please be kind to one another in the comments. I’m happy to hear how things are going where you are, and how you are handling it all; but when talking to one another, please remember that we’re all coming at this from different perspectives, with different experiences, and be gracious to one another. Thank you!

Summer Q&A: Fashion, Beauty, Health, Life

Happy Saturday, friends! There’s no try-on haul this week because I haven’t been ordering much lately.

There’s just not much I need or want right now, but if you have anything specific you’re looking for, or stores you’d like to see me feature, let me know, and I’ll see what I can find for next week.

Meanwhile, I had a few requests for a Q&A, and I’ve been saving up some questions, so I’m going to tackle those today.

Fashion & Shopping

Q // Summer dinner outfits… I’m not a dress person. Any ideas to dress up pants and top?

A // I’ve been wearing a lot of shorts out to dinner lately because it’s so hot. An outfit like this is perfect.

For pants, this post from yesterday has a couple of dinner-out looks.

These straight leg crop jeans at Talbots are thinner and more lightweight than typical jeans, so they look and feel more like pants. They’re nice for dressing up or down this summer.

Q // Trends you are seeing for fall?

A // This one is a tough one to answer right now. The only resources I can find when I google is from runway shows and they are always so far out, it’s hard to know how they will translate to the mainstream.

I predict pants with higher rises, straighter cuts, and shorter lengths are going to continue to gain popularity, as are the shorter tops needed to accommodate them.

Statement sleeves are big right now, and that trend will likely continue into fall.

Boots and booties are always necessary for the cooler weather, and I think loafers will stick around.

According to some of the bigger fashion magazines and lifestyle sites, it sounds like jewel tones will be popular, animal motifs and cut-outs were mentioned a few times, as well as shearling outerwear and asymmetrical sleeves.

It looks like some 80s silhouettes and more tailored styles will be coming back into vogue, and I also read that knee-high boots will be big this fall.

It will be interesting to see it all plays out, especially if many of us are still sticking close to home.

I usually rely on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale to give me an idea of what will be trending for fall among the suburban mom set, haha!

Yes, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is coming!!! #notcanceled

I already have an appointment to visit the store on the very first day of the sale, and I’ll be sharing all my finds with you! Be sure to subscribe to my emails so you don’t miss it.

Q // How did the Kardashian waist belt trainer work out?

A // I believe you’re talking about this SKIMS waist trainer. It was horrible. Way too tight and uncomfortable. I returned it. #lifeistooshorttowearacorset

Q // What are the best departments to shop at Nordstrom? It’s overwhelming!

A // I actually did a post on that! In fact, that was a Q&A post too.

Q // Do you still sell clothing items?

A // I mostly donate or take to places like Clothes Mentor. I just don’t have time to keep up with selling on Instagram, like I was doing before.

Q // What purchase did you regret but spend a lot on?

A // Ooooh, good one! Not many come to mind, but there is one that still makes me ill. It was actually Paul’s purchase. He surprised me one Christmas with Jimmy Choo pumps.

Jo-Lynne Shane wearing BLANKNYC Suede Moto Jacket in Blondie, AG Legging Ankle Jeans, Jimmy Choo ROMY 100 Ballet Pink Suede Pointy Toe Pumps, R Minkoff Leo Clutch. Spring Fashion. Fashion Over 40

We were at the mall together one day, and I picked one up as we walked by the designer shoes on our way out of Nordstrom. I commented wistfully about how gorgeous it was, and then I set it back down, and we went on our way.

Evidently he went back and took a picture of it, so he could find the exact pair, and then he roped my daughter into helping him figure out my shoe size. He did his due diligence and figured out that Jimmy Choos run small, so he ordered a half size up from my normal, and they were the perfect fit.

I was so surprised on Christmas morning. It had never occurred to me that he gave them a second thought, and he never buys me shoes or clothes that I don’t specifically ask for. He was so proud of himself too.

Well, long story longer, I could NOT walk in them. I tried, oh how I tried… they just are not made for my feet. I even ordered and returned a couple other sizes to make sure I had the right one, and I did. They just would not stay on my feet, and they killed my toes after about 10 minutes.

Besides a couple of photo shoots, I only wore them once “for real” — out to dinner for my birthday last summer. We parked right outside the door, so all I had to do was walk to our table and back in them. That’s about all I could manage.

I ended up selling them on eBay for a fraction of what he paid for them. It was almost as gut-wrenching as parting with Ozzy… Okay, I kid. No where near.

But still, they were such a thoughtful surprise gift, and the most expensive shoes I’ve ever owned. Such a waste. Oh, well. Hopefully someone with younger feet is enjoying them.

Q // How do you decide what shoes go with what outfits? i.e. like heel size vs when it’s ok to wear flats?

A // It usually depends on where I’m going and how dressed up I want to be, and sometimes I choose one over the other to change the proportions of an outfit. And of course, the look and overall vibe I’m going for comes into play.

It’s a bit of a dance, and there can be several factors at play, so I try to explain my shoe choices when I share my outfits.

Q // Suggestions for dress pants for nightwear and weddings?

A // This pair is very flattering and versatile for dressing up or down. I can’t imagine wearing them to a wedding, but they definitely work for dinners out and that sort of thing.

These jersey knit wide leg pants would be nice for nightwear and weddings, and these all season flares are super versatile. I hope that helps!

Q&A: Hair & Makeup

Q // Would you mind sharing information on your makeup?

A // Of course! I try to keep the post with my everyday makeup routine updated, and it’s linked under the BEAUTY tab at the top of my blog. I don’t change it up very often.

Q // Best way to keep make up on when wearing a mask?

A // I don’t have any original tips, but my best advice is to wear good quality makeup. Better quality products generally hold up better and last longer, especially when you’re using a face covering.

Q // Love your hair color! Are you still natural or do you color and could you please give me details.

A // Oh, girl. I color. I’ve been covering my gray every 7-8 weeks for years, although it is still not even 50% gray.

I know this because my semi-permanent color totally washed out during Covid, and I saw my true hair color for the first time in years.

It’s the worst around my temples — it starts showing there after a few weeks, but the rest of my head doesn’t look bad until I get past the 8 week mark, and that was with semi-permanent color.

According to my stylist, I’m an ashy level 5.

Q // Have you ever posted a video about how you style your hair? I love how you wear your hair and would love to see exactly how you style your hair and how you curl it when you do.

A // Thank you, and I have! Both posts are old, but not much has changed.

This is how I curl my shoulder length hair, and this how I style it straight, although I have to say, the Dyson hairdryer has made a BIG difference in how quick and easy it is to style my hair straight.

It keeps it from frizzing out, which makes it look thicker and healthier.

Q // Have you gotten your hair cut yet?

A // I had it colored and trimmed a few weeks ago by a friend who does hair out of her home, but I haven’t had a full cut with styling since before Covid struck.

I was supposed to see my regular hair dresser yesterday, but I had to reschedule due to a conflict, and now I won’t be getting in until August. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Believe it or not, I’m still not feeling terribly desperate. I was planning to grow it out a bit anyway, but by the time I get to the salon, I will be more than ready to hack an inch off and get it re-shaped and everything!

Q // Do you get Botox or fillers?

A // Nope, not yet. I’m not opposed, but I feel like that’s one of those things that once you start, you have to keep up with it, so I’m putting it off as long as possible.

What I have been doing is seeing a cosmetic dermatologist for regular glycolic acid peels.

I also did a non-invasive treatment called thermage last February, and I do think it has helped tighten the skin on my face and neck. It’s a subtle difference, but I’m hoping that by starting at my age (I just turned 48) and keeping up with it every few years, I can avoid more invasive procedures.

If you’re local and looking for someone, I highly recommend Dr. Sciara. She’s very conservative in her approach, and so far I’ve been very pleased with her dermatological care.

Health & Wellness

Q // I would love posts on what you eat in a day. You’ve done so well in losing and keeping the weight off.

A // I get this one a lot!

I’ve thought of trying to take pictures and recording a week of what I eat, but I just can’t seem to get into the habit, the way I did with taking pictures of my outfits. Getting dressed in the morning almost seems like part of my job, but I’m in off-duty mode when I go to grab a snack or sit down to dinner.

With intermittent fasting, every day is different because I tend to eat a couple of snacks or a light lunch, plus dinner.

I usually break my fast with a bowl of plain yogurt with local honey, granola and flax & chia seeds mixed in. Or I’ll eat half of a high-fiber English muffin with natural peanut butter and sliced bananas or honey on top, and I usually add a sprinkle of chia seeds to that too.

Sometimes I’ll just grab a snack like a bowl of popcorn, and other times I’ll have a full-on lunch from Chick-fil-A or tuna salad on gluten-free toast.

For dinner, we eat a lot of the same meals over and over because I’m lazy. Many are in my Recipes section (linked in the menu bar at the top of my blog).

Lately, I’ve been making a lot of crustless quiche because I miss eggs, now that I don’t eat breakfast, and it’s a good way to fit in some veggies.

Crustless Quiche with Spinach & Bacon

I make tacos a lot, and the kids love stir-fry.

In the summertime, we often grill chicken or steak or burgers or salmon, and I serve a side of potatoes or rice and a green veggie.

In the winter, I often make chili and beef stew, and we eat more casseroles.

We also all like this sausage and potato hash with fried eggs on top.

Q // Thoughts on or experience with exercising during a fast (vs before or after fast) with IF?

A // Once you become fat adapted, you can exercise during a fast without getting weak and shaky. I do fine running/walking or lifting weights during my fast.

The one thing I’ve noticed is, if we lift really heavy, sometimes I don’t have the stamina that I used to have.

But I’m actually okay with that because over time, the benefits of autophagy are going to work for me in much the same way. I’m not going for how heavy I can lift. I just want to look and feel good.

If you have questions about IF, I highly recommend Gin Stephens’ latest book, Fast Feast Repeat.

Life Stuff & Misc.

Q // If we have to shelter in again in the fall, will you do anything differently?

A // Not really. I don’t really know what I could have done differently. I’m so blessed to be able to work from home and continue my job during these turbulent times.

I guess I could have been more consistent with exercise. I really let that fall by the wayside.

I’m used to working out with a trainer, and I rely on her for accountability. Without that, and with my hip injury preventing me from running or walking as regularly, and just being in a funk because of the cold spring and being homebound for so long, I sort of let it all go to pot.

I’ve been trying to get my mojo back, but I’m still having hip issues, and my trainer isn’t available consistently (that always happens during the summertime), so I’m not where I’d like to be, but I’m not giving up.

If we have to shelter in place again, I probably won’t go nuts stocking my fridge like I did back in March, and I definitely won’t waste time wiping down all my foodstuff with Chlorox wipes. Other than that, I don’t think I will do much differently.

Q // What happened to your puppy?

A // Unfortunately, a few weeks after we got him, I started to experience asthma symptoms. I went on meds, and they made me feel horrible and weren’t even quite managing it. I consulted with several doctors, and we considered trying immunotherapy, but that is not a quick fix, nor is it a guarantee that I’d eventually be able to tolerate him without being on meds.

The indecision was making our home life incredibly stressful, and when a friend offered to take him, we took her up on it, even though I desperately wanted to find a way to keep him. With Covid raging all around us, I didn’t feel like it was wise to compromise my respiratory system in order to keep a pet.

The picture above was taken the morning we took Ozzy to his new home. It was utterly heartbreaking, and I still feel sick to think about it.

Since then, we’ve seen him a couple of times, and it gets easier every time, but I still miss him and hate what I put my daughter through.

She’s fine, by the way. Of course she wishes we could have kept him, but she was exhausted from caring for him, and she is relieved to see him happy in his new home.

He still knows us when we visit, you can tell, and she enjoys visiting him and seeing how he’s grown. That’s enough for her, so it’s going to have to be enough for me too, I guess.

Q // What is the new normal for you look like?

A // Honestly, it’s not a lot different than the old normal. I’m so fortunate to be able to work from home, and I can still see my trainer because we work out in her home gym.

I’ve had a lot of doctor visits and PT appointments in recent months, so that keeps me out and about more than most. Even though they aren’t necessarily fun outings, they help me maintain some semblance of normalcy.

Our state is doing okay at the moment with Covid cases, so lately I’ve been able to dine out and get together with friends. We have our backyard oasis with the pool, that I am so very grateful for. I honestly don’t even care if we go on vacation or not.

I’m dreading this fall because school is going to look so different for two of my three kids, and once the weather gets cold, it’s going to be harder to socialize safely. I feel okay going out to eat and gathering with friends outside, but I don’t want to be going in and out of people’s homes or dining inside restaurants until Covid is under control.

I guess all we can do is take it one day at a time.

And that’s about all I’ve got. This took sort of a downward turn here at the end. Let’s end on a happier note…

Q // What was your career before being an influencer?

A // I was a 3rd grade teacher at a small private Christian school in Haddon Heights, NJ.

I absolutely loved it, but I quit when I had D, and that was almost 21 years ago.

I did odd jobs from home for a while, and then my little blogging hobby took off, and the rest is history!

And that’s a wrap. If you have questions for future Q&A posts, feel free to email me with Q&A in the subject line.

Two Classy Ways to Wear White Crop Pants This Summer

a classy way to wear white crop pants

Talbots has been on a roll lately with their summer styles, and this weekend the entire store is 40% off! I wanted to share a few of their pieces that have recently found a home in my closet, so I styled these white crop pants two ways.

My first look features this cap sleeve sweater with the bateau neckline. I fell in love with this gorgeous geranium pink, but it also comes in four other summery colors as well as classic black and white.

It has such pretty knit details around the neckline and shoulders, and it fits close to the body without being clingy. It also comes in petite, plus, and plus petite; and it runs true to size. I’m wearing my usual small.

This sweater is the perfect complement to these crisp white crop pants.

They have a straight fit with a 25″ inseam, which is the perfect crop length on my 5’5″ frame. These pants run a little big, so I sized down to a 4.

a classy way to wear white crop pants

To keep the look light and summery, I added these metallic rattan buckle sandals that I’ve been wearing so much recently.

I love how these add a touch of glam to my summer outfits. They’re very comfortable and run true to size. I have them in the 8.

If you live in a cooler climate, or are going somewhere that gets cold indoors, a denim jacket is the perfect topper to this classy casual look.

I especially love this one with the stripe lining on the cuffs. I am wearing the XS because the white one I have from Talbots ran big, but this one is more true to size. I would be more comfortable in my usual small.

There is also the same stripe lining behind the collar.

These earrings are also from Talbots. I love combination of brushed gold and rattan discs; they have a such a great upscale casual vibe.

This look reminds me so much of summertime in Maine. It’s perfect for casual dining or getting together with family and friends on mild summer days.

Here at home in Pennsylvania, this is the type of thing I like to wear in the summer to church or places where I’ll be indoors with the A/C blasting. And since these are all classic pieces I can wear for years, I’m looking forward to wearing them again next spring.

While I was shopping at Talbots last week, I also snapped up this lightweight linen tie dye sweater.

Tie dye is having a moment right now, and this sweater keeps it classy with the muted color palette, wide round neck, and traditional styling. This is the very definition of classic with a modern twist.

It also comes in petite and plus sizes, and I’m wearing my usual small.

This basketweave inset bracelet has a side hinge and is easy to pop on and off, and it has such a fun summery vibe.

I like how it coordinates with my basketweave inset earrings.

You can wear them together or separately, depending on your preference. Either would pair nicely with other plain gold jewelry.

The same metallic rattan buckle sandals complete this casual, classy look.

I started shopping Talbots back when I was in college, and I can always count on them for quality, attention to detail, and classic style with a modern twist.

Add to that, their wide range of sizes and stellar customer service, and I’m finding more and more to love about shopping at Talbots these days.

Olive + Black Outfit for Summer

Olive and black is a color combination I’ve always adored, I guess because it appeals to my classic style with a bit of an edge. While olive is not necessarily a neutral, it plays like one, so pairing it with black is a refreshingly chic way to create a neutral look.

This is the CALIA by Carrie Underwood Anywhere Woven Skirt that I featured in last week’s Try-On Haul.

I really like the details in this simple skirt… right down to the coppery tips on the waist tie. It also has pockets!

Plus, the material is thin and moisture-wicking so it’s comfortable on the hottest of days.

On top, I’m wearing the Everlane The Air Cami.

It’s also super lightweight and breathable. It has a relaxed fit with a rounded v-neckline and a curved hem — definitely a versatile closet essential because it can be worn alone or layered under a denim jacket or cardigan.

I rarely tuck my shirt in all the way around, but it seemed to work for this outfit. When I just did a front-tuck, it looked awkward from behind due to the rounded hemline.

With a full-tuck, I was able to blouse it out just enough to make the proportions work, and the elastic waist of the skirt allows me to set it exactly where I want it on my hips.

Both pieces run true to size; I’m wearing smalls.

I kept the look casual with my Cole Haan Anica sandals. These have a comfortable padded footbed and flexible ZeroGrand sole, and the leather straps are soft and supple. I highly recommend them to anyone who struggles with finicky feet.

While they don’t have a great amount of support, they’re flexible and well-padded, and you can adjust them to fit your feet so they’re very easy to walk in.

For accessories, I added my favorite Maui Jim sunnies and a few pieces of silver jewelry. Next time, I’d probably add one of my smaller pendant necklaces as well.

I’d wear this outfit anywhere I typically wear shorts or jeans and a tee. I like how it takes casual and comfortable up a notch.

What I Wore Lately Vol. 17

Happy hump day, friends! I usually post What I Wore Lately every other week, but I’ve already saved up a bunch of outfits, so I thought I’d go ahead and share what I’ve got so far.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds-ish, with a slight hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe. If you have any questions about fit and sizing, don’t hesitate to ask!

What I Wore Lately: Early July

We’ll start with last Wednesday — my birthday! I had a photo shoot with Alison that morning, and then I wore this casual outfit for the rest of the day, until it was time to get ready to go out to dinner.

This linen tee is now marked down to $20, and it comes in a bunch of colors. I’m wearing my usual small, and this is how it looks after washing on cold and laying flat to dry. You could size up for a more relaxed fit and a little more length.

grey tee // white shorts (also at Zappo’s) // Birks // earrings // bracelet

Paul took us all out to eat at one of my favorite restaurants, and it’s a bit of an upscale place, so I wore a dress for the fun of it.

This dress is very lightweight, so it’s cool and comfortable for the hot weather we’ve been having.

I wore these gold heels and added some statement jewelry — a Victoria Emerson boho cuff and these Kendra Scott drop earrings in a light gold.

Then I layered two delicate Gorjana necklaces because I didn’t want to compete with the earrings, but I felt like I needed something in the neckline.

Masks are required until you get to your table, so I made sure to bring one that coordinates. This is from my Sanctuary 5-pack.

black dress // gold sandals // star necklace // pendant // earrings // similar crossbody

The next day, I had an appointment with my doctor to read my MRI results. Even though it was hot out, I wore jeans because I’m always cold in doctors’ offices.

And I picked up this camo tee when it was on sale a few weeks back, but it’s back to full price for now.

camo tee // Paige jeans // Birks // earrings // bracelets // tote

That afternoon, a friend brought her kids over to swim in our pool, so I put my swimsuit on and joined them. This one just came in the mail, so I got brave and took a selfie to show you. I think the print is so pretty.

Prima Donna is currently my favorite swimwear brand because they offer bra cup sizing, and they have good coverage and support without the frump factor. I have two other suits from them, but since I’ve lost weight, they’re getting a little big so I just ordered this one.

I’ll keep wearing all three, though. I need more than two, now that I’m using the pool a lot, plus they’re too pricey to replace while they’re still in good condition.

Prima Donna Sirocco tankini top & swim briefs // Maui Jim sunnies // ball cap // coverup

That brings us to Friday, and I took the girls to the mall for the first time since Covid.

It was kind of weird, with the mask wearing and lines outside the stores, but it was still nice to be there and see things open and operational. I also got my long overdue Shake Shack fix!

Also, these jeans are on sale! I love them — the wash, the length, the raw hem, everything.

washed tee // off-black jeans // similar sneakers (I actually got this pair for my birthday!) // earrings // bracelets // necklace

That night, we went out with friends for my birthday. Yes, I’m one of those people who celebrates all week long.

I wanted to wear the jumpsuit outfit I posted earlier this week, but it got really hot and humid over the weekend, and I knew I’d be super uncomfortable sitting outside in all that polyester, so I opted for shorts instead.

I was still hoping to wear those snake print espadrilles, but after having them on for about 5 minutes, I could already see my ankles starting to swell.

That’s never a good look in with an ankle strap sandal, and I also knew we might be doing a bit of walking, so I decided to be practical and wear flats. I like metallic leather in a flat sandal when I want to be comfortable but still look dressed-up.

I also switched shorts, but not because I didn’t like the first pair. I realized they needed an iron, and then I saw that they were dirty, so I was really glad I had another option in my closet.

This lace-up tank comes in a bunch of colors, and I picked it up when it was on sale, but it’s back to full price at the moment.

lace-up tank // white shorts // gold sandals // earrings // bracelet

That brings us to July 4th! We hosted friends for a pool party, and I wore this navy and white striped top and white shorts.

This striped dolman tee is 40% off with code LOVEIT, and it’s TTS, or size down if in between. I have the small, but it’s roomy.

I know I said I wasn’t keeping these sandals, but at the last minute, I grabbed them out of my Trunk. I really like the barely there style and the dainty gold logo, and I find myself reaching for them more often than I originally thought I would.

striped top // white shorts // sandals // earrings // initial necklace // bracelets

The next day was Sunday, and we had church for the first time since Covid shut everything down back in mid-March.

I decided to keep the July 4th theme going, and I wore this navy and white striped dress from last year. My silver wedges are also from last year, so I don’t have any links.

After church, I threw on a tank top and shorts for the afternoon at home.

similar tank // jean shorts // toe ring sandals

I didn’t go anywhere on Monday that I recall, but I went ahead and put on makeup and got dressed all the way down to my shoes and jewelry. I’m always more productive when I get fully dressed.

These yellow shorts run a little big, and I sized down to a 4, although I will say, they don’t stretch out much. I almost wish I had kept the 6. They look good, but they feel kind of tight in the bum, so they’re not as comfortable as some of my others.

Sizes are limited, but the same style comes in this really pretty light blue. Both colors are marked down to $29.

all details

And finally, this was yesterday. I called a “grace day” and stayed in my pajamas all day. (I did put on a bra, of course!) The tank and shorts are old, but I often find good deals on PJ Salvage at Nordstrom Rack. That’s where I got these shorts earlier in the season.

Yes, I threw on my Birks with my pjs. They have good support, and I’m trying to stand at my desk more. (Paul got me this adjustable desk so I can change positions throughout the day.)

Wow, what a note to end on. Oh, well, just keeping it real.

Black Jumpsuit for Summer

This post was supposed to be what I wore for my birthday dinner, but I ended up wearing something else both nights. I always do that, for some reason. I can’t ever seem to plan ahead.

But I still wanted to share it because I think it’s so cute!

Unfortunately the jumpsuit is pretty much sold out, so I linked up some other options at the end of the post.

I actually purchased this months ago, in my local store… so that must have been February or early March because we shut down due to Covid on Friday the 13th of March.

I held onto it, thinking I’d have an occasion to wear it, but so far, no dice. Oh, well. It’s a nice piece to have in the back of my closet for when events start up again.

The tie waist and short dolman sleeves are super flattering, and I love the V-back.

It dips just low enough to make it a little extra special, but not so low that it interferes with your bra.

The wide cropped leg is just enough to be flowy but not too voluminous, and the volume on the bottom helps to offset the wider shoulders, while the tie sash emphasizes the waist.

I did size down to the 4 in this jumpsuit, so if you’re considering ordering one of the sizes that are left, you may want to size down one from your normal LOFT dress size. I would typically wear a 6, but it swallowed me up.

I wore these snake print wedge espadrille sandals. They keep the look light and summery, while also adding some pattern and texture and lending a subtle edgy vibe.

For accessories, I wore an older pair of Stella & Dot chandelier earrings and my D Yurman link bracelet, although I think this Victoria Emerson Manarola boho cuff would also look great with this outfit.

Oh, and I wanted to tell you, I made a mistake in Friday’s post — the boho cuff I was wearing with the pink henley tee is actually the Cairo. For some reason, I thought it was supposed to go the other way, with the beige side facing out.

The nice thing is, you can wear it both ways, so you’re pretty much getting 2 bracelets in one!

Also, the Victoria Emerson BOGO Sale has been extended, so if you didn’t get a chance to shop it, you can still take advantage of their buy one, get one free offer.

I love this look for a date night or summer event. Unfortunately, ours have all been outdoors lately, and it’s so hot, I didn’t feel like I wanted to deal with the jumpsuit factor. Plus, the material on this one isn’t super breathable.

However, a black jumpsuit is a nice wardrobe piece to have. It’s pretty much the 2020 version of a LBD, so I linked up some other options below!

Outfit Details:

LOFT jumpsuit (see more options below) // wedge sandals // earrings (old) // bracelet // similar clutch

Coffee Talk 07.05.20

It’s been a strange year so far, but I have high hopes for the second half of 2020! We kicked it off with my birthday celebration a few nights ago.

On Wednesday night, my actual birthday, Paul took the girls and me out for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants. (D was at camp.) We sat outside, the weather was beautiful, and the food was delicious.

Then we went out to eat at another one of my favorite haunts to celebrate with some of our best friends on Friday night. We opted for outdoor dining both times.

We were only supposed to have the table for 75 minutes, but they were able to arrange it so we could stay for the 2nd seating, so we lingered over drinks and dessert and just chatted and enjoyed catching up.

And last night, we got together again with the same group of friends for a 4th of July pool party in our backyard.

That was so much fun. We’re often in Maine over the 4th, and the past couple of years, we were just here alone, so it was great to be able to use the pool and celebrate with friends for the most festive holiday of the summer.

Judging by the sounds of it, a lot of our neighbors had the same idea. There were several gatherings going on around us, and so many fireworks displays to see from our front yard after dark.

It’s also the first 4th of July that I can remember in years that D was here with us because he’s usually at camp this week. This year, it fell on the one night he gets to come home between groups of campers, so a few of his friends joined us as well.

So all in all, it’s been a great birthday week/holiday weekend.

And, it gets even better. Today we actually get to go to church for the first time in almost 4 months! Our church is finally opening this week for an in-person worship service.

It will be very weird to be in church, for several reasons. For one, the pandemic hit right before we were supposed to move to a new building, so we will be meeting for the first time at our new location.

And of course, Covid concerns will make our service very different.

We had to sign up, and attendance is limited to 40 people. We will be seated in family units, 6 feet apart, and we are required to wear masks. We will be singing, but only with masks and proper social distancing, and we’ll be using pre-packaged elements for Communion.

I’m sure it will be strange, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m just happy to be in church again. Watching it on YouTube is NOT the same.

I realize not everyone is comfortable gathering with friends this weekend, and other areas are getting hit hard right now. We’ve been on lockdown for a long time, and I’ve been waiting patiently for our turn to enjoy a little more freedom. We’re keeping our circle small and staying outside most of the time.

There’s always an element of risk, of course, when gathering with others in this new Covid world, but we’re doing our best to be smart about it. At the moment, our state is in pretty good shape, and I’m hoping with the proper precautions, we can stay that way.

I need to get a move on here if I’m going to be on time, so this is a short one. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
