22 Days of Summer Fashion: Utility Shorts + Leopard Face Mask

Good morning, I’m super excited to launch 22 Days of Summer Fashion 2020 on this first day of JUNE!

22 Days of Summer Fashion is a style challenge where Cyndi Spivey and I each style a new summer outfit every weekday during the month of June.

If you have any requests — events you have coming up, or clothing items you’d like us to style — let me know!

For my first look, I’m styling a pair of utility shorts and sharing my #pandemicstyle with a coordinating PPE mask… Sorry, I had to!  😂

Here in PA, face masks are required to enter most buildings or places of business and highly encouraged when around other people in public places. I’m not sure if they’ll still be required or just recommended when we enter the yellow phase, but if it makes people feel safer, I’ll happily comply.

And I figure, if I’m going to wear one, it might as well complement my outfit, so I ordered this 5 Pack of Fashion PPE Masks from Sanctuary.com several weeks ago. The best part about these is they have a wire over the nose, so they stay in place.

I rotate them depending on what I’m wearing, and which one is clean. They wash up well, and they fit great. To wash, I put them in a lingerie bag so the straps don’t get caught on anything, and lay them flat to dry.

Okay, so here’s the way I prefer to wear this outfit… sans face mask.

This is the pima micro rib cap-sleeve tee from Everlane, and I really love the fit and feel. It’s such a feminine design, with the open neckline and a subtle statement sleeve.

It’s 95% pima cotton, 5% elastane, and it has a body-con fit, so I sized up to the medium. The quality is really nice for a $30 top, and it also layers nicely under a denim jacket.

These taupe utility shorts are from White House Black Market. I love the angled zip pockets, and this taupe is a nice alternative to the traditional khaki.

They have sewn cuffs and back patch pockets with contrast twill trim, and the inseam is 4 1/2”. The leg opening is a little narrower than most, for a flattering fit.

They’re made of a cotton/rayon/spandex blend, so they’re soft and have a good amount of stretch.

I’m usually a 6, but knowing that WHBM tends to run big, I ordered the 4. They were a little snug at first, but they loosened up within the first couple hours of wear. That said, I read through the reviews and most went with their usual size.

These shorts are currently marked down to $49 and available in all sizes, from 00 — 18!

I wore these strappy flat sandals on the cork sole to elevate the look. I’ve shared these before, but they’re by Vince — one of my favorite higher end shoe designers. Several of you have ordered these, and the feedback is they work best for flat and/or narrow feet.

I find them extremely comfortable, but some of you who have higher arches or wider feet found them too tight. Of course, there are plenty of other options available, so I’ll link a few at the end of this post. These sandals are currently 40% off at Nordstrom and 20% off at Zappo’s.

My jewelry is minimal, but that’s partly by accident. I left the house for this photo shoot, my car packed with summer outfits, and left my jewelry sitting on my dresser. Womp… womp…

I had a huge bag packed up with different options for every outfit, and left them all at home. I wasn’t even wearing earrings when I walked out the door, which is almost unheard of for me. So, this outfit (and several more I’m posting over the next few weeks) will be mostly devoid of accessories. I did, however, remember to bring a few handbags and sunglasses.

These are the new Gucci cat eye sunnies I kept from my last Trunk Club. They were on a major sale at the time, and I fell in love with the chic black frames. Yes, they’re a splurge, but they’re a classic style I’ll have for years.

This look is perfect for casual occasions when you don’t want to wear jean shorts.

The utility styling keeps them casual, and the tailored fit makes them easy to dress up or down. And you can’t go wrong with pairing black and taupe. I also really like how the black sandals and the black top bookend the outfit.

  1. I love the ease and simplicity of this outfit…and it’s one of my favorite color combos! Also loving the bag! So glad you and Cyndi teamed up for the summer! Can’t wait to see more!

  2. Nice outfit Jo-Lynne. I like the zipper on the shorts. I agree with having a mask to be fashionable if we have to! I could not find animal print masks so I made my own. Wish I had seen these. A day trip sounds like a great idea. We are going for a nice drive today and stopping to pick up a take out order to have a nice dinner at home. Still not feeling comfortable eating in a restaurant yet.

  3. Happy June Jo-Lynne! Let’s hope we all have a better month. I know I’m ready for shorts and love these but still think $50 is a lot to pay for shorts but I know I would probably get a lot of wear from them.  I struggle with finding shorts because I am short and have small thighs so most shorts are to wide around the legs so I rarely order shorts online but since you mentioned they fit snug around  the thigh, they just might work for me. Plus the whole outfit is super cute!

  4. I love the shorts! If I were just browsing online at WHBM I would never give them a second glance….they look so much better on you than the model on the website!! Love the whole outfit. Have a great week!

  5. Such a classic comfy look!  I’m so looking forward to see what you’ll be styling for us!  It’s so hard right now to not get in a rut of just tossing any old thing on.  Each day, I usually do some makeup, lipgloss and always earrings, but now this will inspire me to be more deliberate in getting dressed for my day!  Even though we are in the “yellow phase” where we live in PA, , I still haven’t ventured out Into any stores.  My big outing is usually a curbside grocery pickup!  And maybe drive through lunch at Wendy’s!

  6. Question – Can you breathe easily with the fabric mask on?  We are using medical masks because we have them, but I will switch to fabric ones so that Larry can have the others.  As I have previously mentioned, due to his cancer, we will be wearing masks for the unseeable future.  I like the black and khaki together and you look very nice in this outfit.  I could have chosen a black top to wear with my tannish shorts today, but didn’t.  Maybe next time!  I’m glad you enjoyed your dads visit.  I pray his drive home will be very smooth.  A family day trip sounds great!

  7. Love it! Thanks for wearing a mask – I have a diabetic husband and an 83-year old mom who can’t afford to get it. If you gotta wear a mask, do it with panache!

  8. Love this outfit (and the matching face mask – LOL!). Speaking of matching face masks, my girlfriend made me a mask that matches my glasses 🙂

  9. Love your mask. I looked at those, and might need to go ahead and order them. We’re on shelter in place until further notice. UGH! I’m ready to get back to normal. XO

  10. Hey JoLynne! I really love this look on you. Love the outfit. It’s so simple and clean. Also live the sandals. Love your Blog as always! You’re my fashion inspiration! Have a Great Day!!

  11. Hi! Such a cute outfit! I have always loved this simple understated but quality look.
Looking forward to this fun summer series with You ladies!

  12. So cute! Ok, that top is just too cute. I placed my order for my very first Everlane item, that black tee! I love your “22 Days” posts, so I am really glad you brought it back! Can’t wait to see what you have tomorrow!

  13. LOVE this outfit. It’s a classic and looks fantastic.  I love the color of the shorts…not too light.  Even though I’m slim, these are too short for me.  I’ve tried shorter shorts and they just don’t look right.  Maybe it’s because I’m 5’9”?  I’ll look for something similar in 7”.

  14. Love this outfit!  I love the color combination.  The mask is a great addition.  We will be wearing them around here for awhile, so having cute ones makes it easier!

  15. Thank you! I love the mask with that outfit :).   Here in CT face masks are required as well.
