25 Days of Summer Fashion: Red Ruffle Blouse

Greetings and welcome to 25 Days of Summer Fashion! I’m teaming up once again with my partner-in-style, Cyndi Spivey, and we’re each sharing a new summer outfit every day except Sundays during the month of June!

I love summer, and I’m so excited to be styling summer clothes!!! While fall and winter clothes may offer more variety and layering possibilities, summer clothes just make me happy.

I’ve only shot a few outfits for this series, and I struggled with which one to share first. I always try to start off these series with a look I love, and I do love this outfit, but for some reason we didn’t get any good full-length shots. Sometimes that’s just the way it goes.

When we were shooting, Alison kept saying, “I just love the details on that top…” so I think that’s why we have so many of the top and not a lot of the whole look.

I know why she was so smitten with this top, though. It really is adorable. That’s not a word I often use to describe my style, but it really fits in the case of this blouse.

I discovered it while shopping in-store at Nordstrom last week, and I just love the ruffles at the neck and sleeves, the pin tucks in the back, and the crisp cotton poplin for summer.

It also comes in white, but I was drawn to this fiery tomato red.

It has just enough shape through the waist to be flattering without being fitted, and the 22″ length is perfect for pairing with the high rise jeans and shorts that are trending this spring and summer.

It’s definitely on the spendier side, but I love the details, and it’s different than anything else in my closet.

I originally envisioned this top with white jeans — in fact, that’s how I tried it on in the dressing room. But I also really love how red looks paired with dark blue denim, and it seems almost unexpected in the summertime, so that’s how I decided to style it for this post.

And unfortunately, this is the best full-length outfit shot we got… At least you get the idea.

White shoes would look good with this, but I decided to stick to a neutral. I’ve been getting a lot of wear out of these sandals, and they continue to be super comfortable and wearable. They’re also 30% off!

I accessorized with white and silver jewelry, and left the neckline open so as not to compete with the ruffle details.

I love this look for a casual date night or lunch with friends, and you could also dress this top down with shorts and flat sandals for a backyard BBQ or other casual gathering.

  1. Jo-Lynne, What a nice, cheery blouse! I LOVE that it can be worn with the buttons down the back as well. (are those HEART buttons??) I assume it would need a light pressing after washing, but worth it! Enjoy this beautiful Saturday. No tornado warnings, yay!!!

    1. They are heart buttons, and I don’t love that detail, but otherwise, so fun. It does need to be pressed, but it doesn’t take long. Stay safe. No more tornadoes!

  2. That is such a pretty top, and you look so nice in it!  The new jeans you shared with us are awesome, but since I’m not really wearing my jeans with the super hot and dry weather we are having, I don’t need to even consider them.  Having a morning temp of 60 sounds fabulous!  Enjoy the music festival!

  3. Very very cute outfit. And that color looks amazing on you. I agree it’s time for summer & it’s time to enjoy the warmer weather.

We have rain in the forecast for the next several days, but no severe storms forecasted – so far. I’m for keeping it that way!!

    Have a wonderful day.

  4. Your outfit is darling. 😉 I’ve always liked “Kut from the Kloth” jeans, but those you’re styling today would hit me right below the knee on my long legs (not the look I like 😬)

I just read an article in Vogue magazine about this year’s fall fashion trends and apparently ruffles were everywhere on the runway, so I guess we’ll start seeing them more in the stores.

Happy Saturday to you! It’s another foggy, cool morning in So CA with a high of just 70 predicted. Planning to work in the garden this afternoon.

    1. Ugh, honestly, this blouse aside, I’m not a huge fan of ruffles — they tend to add visual weight. I hope there are more tailored options too! Your CA weather sounds gloomy. I hope you get some sun soon!

      1. I agree with you on the ruffles. I think it gets tricky when a woman reaches a certain age (or any age really) and there’s the risk of it looking ridiculous. The runway is always more extreme as you know, but one of the models was draped in a ruffled high neck top paired with a tiered ruffle maxi skirt and boots….too much!

I’m still cold ….LOL! My husband says I’m the only person he knows who gets cold when it’s 70 degrees out. I’ve been wearing long sleeves and sweaters every day! Next week I think it’s supposed to inch up into the high 70s! August and September are always our hottest months but this spring has been unusually cool.

  5. Sorry Jo-Lynne but this top is so-so. It looks a little too boxy. I love the color on you though. I have to say I like how the model has the top on with the buttons in the back. I think it looks better that way. I think the other problem with this top is the heart shape buttons. I’m not a fan of heart shape stuff. I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer series. The jeans you shared yesterday look amazing!

  6. The heart shaped buttons are a little too youthful looking for me but the color is pretty. But excited to see what you have in store to share with us for the summer series.

  7. Yet another outfit I’m in love with!!!  That top, stunning in both color & style, works perfectly with your coloring! Now for a question about doing a post on tops & bottoms, and if it’s worthwhile?  For example, If you’re wearing skinny jeans, what style top (baggy or shaped) and length should you wear.  If you’re wearing boot cut jeans, crops, etc. what style top to look for.  And if you have a bit of that lower belly bulge (for some of us over 60!  Before 60, mine was higher up, LOL), how to disguise it with a longer top, but then what jeans should we wear?  I always have a bit of a dilemma trying to get the proportions right.  Is that worth a post?  And then picking out the right shoes to minimize the frump factor, after the outfit is all together. So many things to consider while trying to look stylish & up to date!  Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

    1. That sounds like a great post idea but a big one to tackle. 🙂 It is something I’d do after this series is over, and I’d use various outfit pix as examples. Remind me in July!

  8. I love the color of the blouse! I may have missed the make up post but your eyebrows look different so I was wondering if you’re using a different pencil? Mine have disappeared with age and I’m looking for a solution!

    1. A great option for fading brows is brow mascara. NYX has an inexpensive one that looks great on your brows. Before applying, I always dab off any excess gel when I pull out the wand to prevent clumps. It is very natural looking and you will be surprised how many brow hairs you actually have when you can see them! It comes in a variety of colors but even the black is very soft and looks completely natural with my light to medium brown hair. I’d say it’s the one makeup item I would never be without!

  9. Absolutely LOVE this top! Yes, it is both adorable and darling! :0) The whole outfit looks great on you and not overly sweet due to the jeans and heels. It will look so cute with white, too, and maybe even olive?? 🤔
