Dressy Holiday Pants Outfit + Green Monday Sale Roundup

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a good weekend. We went out on Saturday morning to shoot this holiday look before the snow started. While we were taking pictures, it started coming down — big, fluffy flakes. So pretty!!!

Most of my holiday events are behind me at this point, but I’m thinking ahead to what I’ll wear when I’m with my family in Virginia over Christmas. We’ll go to church on Sunday, which happens to be Christmas Eve this year, and we’re going out for dinner at a nice hotel on Christmas Day. I’ll need a few dressy outfits that aren’t cocktail attire but definitely not jeans either. I expect many of you have similar events to attend this holiday season.

I tend to stay away from red this time of year because it’s so expected. It seems like everybody wears red for Christmas events, and I like to be a little bit different, but I fell in love with this pearlized button slit cuff sweater and couldn’t resist its call.

Unfortunately we didn’t think to get a shot of the back, but the back of this sweater has a modest v-neck as well, and I absolutely love the pearlized buttons and the split cuff. It’s such a fun detail, but it doesn’t get in the way when you’re eating and moving about, and the sleeves are long and cut close to the body so you don’t get a draft. I’m pretty cold-natured, and while it’s certainly not a cozy sweater, it doesn’t leave any areas bare either.

It’s a nice quality fine gauge knit with a subtle ribbed texture, and it’s a great length for most women. Best of all, it’s 40% off, which brings it under $40. For size reference, I’m wearing the small.

I paired this red sweater with black ponte bootcut pants, and I wore leopard pumps to keep it from being too plain. They add a nice pattern and texture to this classic look.

I love these pants. They’re such a nice quality fabric — thick, with a good weight to them. They don’t cling, but they fit snug to the thigh area and then flare at the bottom for a modest bootcut leg that is universally flattering. They come in regular, petite, and tall lengths.

I’m wearing the regular with a 30 1/2″ inseam, which is perfect for wearing with my go-to Hazel pumps. I have these shoes in something like 5 colors, they are that good.

I picked up this black suede choker with hoop drop at White House Black Market a few months ago. I really like the way it fills a v-neckline, and it gives the outfit a bit of an edge. For church, I might opt for a more subtle pendant necklace instead.

I’m wearing a bold red lip, which is something I rarely do, but I felt like this sweater demanded it. I lined my lips with GloMinerals Lip Liner in Aster Red and then I applied GloMinerals Suede Matt Crayon in Bombshell.

I’m telling you, this stuff is made to last. After our pictures were over, I tried to wipe it off, and it wouldn’t budge. Then I applied a pink gloss on top to tone down the color, and the red came through and made it all quite bright. If you want a red lipstick that stays on all day, I recommend this one!

I carried a patent leather envelope clutch, which is old and no longer available. I love the R Minkoff Leo Envelope Clutch as another option. I have it in gold, and I would have carried it except my necklace and the buttons on the sweater are silver. Yes, I probably overthink these things. Ha! I think the black patent works well, though, and it makes a nice contrast against my camel coat.

Speaking of this coat, I’ve shared it before, but I thought it would be helpful to show what I might wear on top of this outfit. I love this camel coat to dress up a casual denim outfit, and it also works great over more conservative dressy outfits like this one. The red scarf adds the perfect finishing touch, and also keeps my neck warm since the sweater and the coat both have open necklines.

Hopefully this look inspires you as you’re planning your outfits for upcoming holiday events. I realize there’s nothing particularly ground breaking about a red sweater and black pants this time of year, but I really love the details on this sweater and how the leopard pumps pop the outfit. The choker necklace gives the look a bit of an edge, and the camel coat and red scarf top off the outfit beautifully.

  1. That was smart thinking to wear the coat too—might as well include it since most of us will need one when we go out to our holiday event, right??
It’s funny you say that about red, because as much as I love the color, I don’t wear it as much around the holidays just because it is so expected. But I can see why you loved this sweater—the details and fit are so perfect, Jo-Lynne!! Besides, it’s not bad to be traditional….
    Enjoy your Monday,

  2. Great outfit!  I am a traditionalist. I always think red or green first when it comes to dressing up for the holidays.  I have to make a conscious effort to go with something different.  Lol. I do love red and green any time of year though.

  3. Jo-Lynne,  I am so glad you jumped on the red bandwagon because the detail of that sweater is fabulous and you look so very pretty in it.  When I need my coat, I have to wear lighter weight tops so that I don’t roast.  Have a fabulous Monday!

  4. I tend to shy away from dress black pants because they are so expected which over time I’ve translated to boring– which means I don’t own a pair. But I love this look and my closet needs a pair of “dress” pants that aren’t skinnies. And I love ponte pants. I donated my old pair that must have been 10 years old. Placing my order.

    1. Same, I almost hated to wear this with black pants, but I didn’t have any other options (although grey or winter white would be lovely; I just don’t have any dress pants in those colors) and I was surprised by how much I actually liked this.

    1. Personally, I would not carry a leopard bag while wearing leopard shoes. I’d choose one or the other. Not to say I haven’t seen others do it, I just prefer to have one stand-out piece. 🙂

  5. Beautiful and festive outfit! I love red. Thanks for styling the nice black pants. I need to replace some of mine and appreciate the great idea! Have a great Monday.

  6. I love everything about this outfit! It’s simple parts that make for a great whole. The details on the sleeve, the shoes, the choker. Perfect. And then how the coat ties in so wonderfully. Your red lip looks good too. I tone mine down with another layer as well. Happy Monday!

  7. I pinned your last picture in this post! You looked amazing! Someday I would love to get that reefer coat. Merry Christmas!

  8. I was just thinking that I haven’t picked out a Christmas outfit yet and lo and behold, this post appears. I just placed my order for this sweater. Perfect for our Christmas! Thanks for the post! (am going to try to get the necklace as well!)

  9. It seems like every time I am struggling to figure out what to wear for a certain event you end up posting the perfect, most wearable option! This outfit will be perfect for a special birthday party I am attending over the holidays. You’re such a fantastic stylist!

  10. Jo-Lynne, you look fabulous!!! The sweater is beautiful and the pearl button detail on the sleeves makes it so classy. The snow came at the right time for your pics. It snowed here in NC from last Friday at lunch until late Saturday afternoon and was gorgeous. *Lisa*

  11. I also tend to stay away from the red and green at Christmas, so expected colors. I do like this red sweater though, and I think I did see some snow falling around you. Looking good as always.

  12. Thanks for the reminder that leopard shoes go with lots of things. I wouldn’t have thought to pair them with this outfit, but it is really pretty.
I may copy you, but use my houndtooth pants….but then would the shoes be too much? Maybe I’ll have to try is and see….
