26 Days of Fall Outfits featuring Utility Vest

Welcome to our 26 Days of Fall Outfits series!

26 Days of Fall Fashion

Cyndi and I are teaming up to bring you a new outfit every day of September (excluding Sundays.) We hope these posts give you some fresh outfit inspiration as we transition to fall. I always encourage you to shop your closet first, but if you do want to add a few new items to your wardrobe, I’ll do my best to provide current product links that fit a variety of budgets.

To kick off our 26 Days of Fall Fashion, I wanted to style this utility vest that I picked up at Nordstrom Rack a few weeks ago. It was 50% off, so I didn’t think twice before I grabbed it. I’ve been wanting to add a utility vest to my wardrobe for a while because it’s such a great layering piece, and you can wear it over short or long sleeves or even a tank top.

26 Days of Fall Outfit Ideas: utility vest + grey tee + skinny jeans

For my utility jacket debut, I went with neutrals — this grey t-shirt with my dark skinnies and gold espadrille flats. Espadrilles are more of a summer shoe, but I think we can get by with them for a few more weeks. Any neutral ballet flat would work, though.

This Mini Crosby Crossbody in port is a new fall wardrobe addition as well. I knew I’d get a lot of mileage out of this color. It holds just the essentials, so it’s a perfect going-out bag.

(I do wish I’d taken the time to put on a belt. We were rushing to get out of the house, but I do recommend wearing a belt when tucking a shirt in. Also, you may enjoy this post on how to front tuck your shirt.)

  1. So cute! It’s still in the 90s here so I think I’ll wear my utility vest with shorts today. This is going to be an amazing month of fashion!!

  2. Temperatures still in the 90s definitely mean the espadrilles are ok if you ask me. I love your new bag, I’m loving that color this fall.

  3. Love the utility vest; I have a khaki one that I’ll be wearing as a transition piece. Also love the cross body bag, fantastic color for fall!

  4. I am so excited for Fall and Fall fashion! I love Jo-Lynn and Cyndi! I love the casual look as I am a stay at home housewife. You both inspire me to get out of my work out clothes. My husband truly appreciates it!! I appreciate the affordable links to fashionable clothes!

  5. Love the utility vest. Am trying to justify a purchase as I write….. but just did some shopping last night. Oh my, what to do. It is really cute!

  6. Excited to see your fall inspiration. Although it is still hard for me to believe summer is over!!!!! I’m in denial!

  9. I LOVE that you started out with a utility vest! It may just be my most versatile fall clothing item. As always, you have styled it impeccably. Looking forward to what comes next!

  10. I’ve been seeing these vests everywhere. It’s a versatile piece that you can do a lot with. I just might have to get one.

  11. I’ve been wanting a vest like that – I will have to hit up my Nords Rack and see if they have them in stock……………..it’s 90 degrees in Ohio this week and I am so ready for it to cool off about 20 degrees.

  12. So excited for fall fashion! I’m especially interested in new ways to put together what I already have in my closet. Thanks for inspiring me.

  13. I never seem to have good luck at Nordstrom Rack, but everyone else does! I think I need more patience sifting through the racks, haha! I love the vest! So darn cute!

  14. Perfect cute fall outfit! I have everything in my closet to put together this outfit myself! So as soon as the heat leaves Texas, I will be able to copy you! The only item I don’t have is the purse, but I have a rust color one, that I think will look great too! Thanks for bringing us the 26 days of Fall outfits!

    1. I thought they were silly until I got one for a blogging campaign I was working on. Now I won’t be without it. It truly motivates me to move more during the day. You can set up Challenges with a group of friends, and if you’re competitive at all, it’s very motivating. 🙂

  15. LOVE the vest – gonna check it out right now – does it run small?? I keep up with both of you and so appreciate what you do!! 🙂

  16. I am so excited to take part in this 26 Days of Fall Challenge and be a part of this community. I really appreciate that there are budget-conscious options for everyone, and that I can get great ideas for work and play clothes by mixing what I have with options I may want to buy! Let the fun begin!!

  17. I found my utility vest at TJMaxx! I’m looking forward to wearing it soon. Thanks for putting this event/series together! I know it takes a LOT of work!

  18. What size in the utility vest? Sorry I wasn’t more specific above. I’m a dork like that. Love your stuff!

  19. I love this blog because all your outfits are appropriate and modest as well as stylish and fashionable. I always get such great ideas from you. Thanks!

  20. I need to find a similar vest! Also, love the shoes. I found some similar at Gap recently and bought them when I recalled how cute yours were! Looking forward to seeing your outfit choices!

  21. Thanx so much for all you and Cindy do to inspire us with practical ideas for our wardrobes….I am disabled and part of my health recovery is to look decent and some-what stylish in a casual way. These posts motivate me and inspire me to heal asap and get back to a wonderful and fashionable ‘normal’…many blessings to you and your family!

  22. I bought that same utility vest from Nordstrom Rack, and I love it. It will be a great fall and winter piece here in Texas where it doesn’t get too cold. Thanks for the idea of a way to wear it!

  23. Great first day outfit! I have the grey shirt and skinny jeans, and am on the hunt for a utility vest. I bought my first vest last year (a denim one) and was so surprised at how much I enjoyed it. So I can’t wait to find an olive utility. And for it to get cool enough to wear it!

  24. You look great, as always! I always enjoy your blog & Cyndi’s! Thanks are all of your ideas & work you ladies put in! Loving the Fall Fashion already 🙂

  25. Recently, I have lost a lot of weight. I am in the process of getting rid of clothes that no longer fit and purchasing a new wardrobe. I love the vest. It’s just the style I’ve been looking for.

  26. WOW! You and Cyndi both started out with a bang! I’ve seen some of her posts from your blog and truly loved her top and scarf combo. Now I see I need a utility vest as well as Cyndi’s striped tunic. Fortunately I have a leopard scarf. I like your vest since it appears to be a lighter weight than most of the vests that I have and can be worn with a variety of clothes. This month is going to be so exciting to see what the two of you show us. I know I will benefit from it! Thank y’all both for doing this!

  27. I’m looking forward to seeing all your outfits. Love the utility vest – I’ve been wanting one. Thanks for providing several links!

  28. Love the vest and have been eyeing the Fitbit bracelet, so pretty in gold! Thanks for the great ideas and encouraging us to shop our closets. I have learned a lot from reading your blog.

  29. I really like the utility vest. I think it is a lot more versatile than the jackets I have seen. Thanks for the fall fashion!

  30. I love the gold cuff bracelet. It’s hard to find cuff bracelets that aren’t overly bulky. As someone with a wider hand/wrist bone structure, I feel like that bracelet would provide balance and not add bulk. 🙂

  31. I really like that utility vest. I’ve been contemplating one… this makes me think I may need one sooner than later!

  32. I love how the vest can take you from the warm days of early fall through much cooler days depending on how you layer it with different tops, etc..It’s a perfect transitional wardrobe piece!

  33. So glad I found your blog! I’m just starting to love fashion again! I was stuck in a jeans and t-shirt rut for years. I’m so inspired by the outfits that you and Cindy post <3

  34. I love this utility vest and it’s versatility. I need to go to Nordstrom’s. 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration. I have been following Cyndi for while and Just found your blog through her. I am loving the 26 days of fall fashion and I am super excited about the give away. 🙂 🙂

  35. I love the idea of the utility vest. Here in Nevada our weather is constantly changing. The vest is so versatile and adds a cute layer to almost any outfit. Great ideas for fall!

  36. I just love the Utility vest! I have never worn vests that I can remember 🙂 This one is so stylish & would go perfectly with jeans.
    Thank you.

  37. I love your blog! I’m new to your site and I too am over 40. I love all the pulled together looks! Thanks for all the great outfit ideas!!!

  38. Thank you for all the ideas. I need to bump up my style just a bit. Thank you for budget suggestions. I don’t have the style budget that you do. 😉

    1. LOL. It’s a nice piece to have for fall, but I only get a couple of months out of it. It gets cold so fast here in PA. I think if I lived further south, I’d wear it more. Hope that helps you make up your mind! 🙂

  39. I’ve enjoyed this series so so much! Love the FB group and the outfits that I can copy and know I will look put together! Thank you both so much for doing this! 🙂

  40. I really need to find a vest like that, it’s so cute! It’s also smart to invest in quality denim; since I’m on a college budget I’ve been buying up cheap pairs, and it hasn’t worked out too well!
