3 Ways To Style A Denim Skirt for Transition Season

Greetings, friends! I’m excited to be teaming up today with two other fashion blogs to bring you 3 ways to style a denim skirt during this transition season.

Kay Harms is a long-time reader who became a friend when we got to meet for coffee when she was visiting the area last year. She’s a professional writer and speaker who recently started a fashion blog called Dressed For My Day, where she strives to encourage other 40+ women to dress our bodies in a way that helps us influence our worlds positively and with grace.

I’ve gotten to know Susanne more recently, and she blogs at Thompson Hill about American small town living. Her blog is a mix of topics including food, home & garden, and fashion. She’s an amazing cook and loves to share recipes and entertaining tips as well as fashion and outfit inspiration.

I often get requests for other blogs that offer similar content to mine, so I’m super excited to introduce both of these ladies today because I think their blogs will resonate with many of you.

If you’re new here and visiting from Kay or Susanne’s blogs, welcome!

I’m Jo-Lynne, and I’m married with 3 kids — one in middle school, one in high school, and one who just went off to college a few days ago. *gulp*

We live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and I’ve been blogging for over 12 years. These days I focus mostly on fashion, but I’ve been sharing some of my home projects since we moved this past summer, and I have a large catalog of travel tipsrecipes, and beauty reviews in my blog archives, if you care to poke around.

I wear a mix of high and low fashion, and my style is mostly casual and classic with an edgy piece thrown in here and there. Today I’m styling this denim skirt from the Universal Thread line at Target with a floral blouse from Loft.

This blouse caught my eye on the Loft website, and I snagged it when it went on sale. It’s currently marked down to $49 and then 40% off that, so a nice price for a great transition piece that you can start wearing now and enjoy well into fall — just throw a jean jacket or cardigan on top when it gets cooler outside.

The colors are really pretty, and it has enough drape to be flattering even though it doesn’t have a lot of structure. For size reference, I’m wearing my usual small.

My regular readers know I’m a bit of a denim snob, so I was really happy to find this budget-friendly denim skirt at Target for under $20!!! It fits great and it has a nice medium wash.

Size-wise, it runs small. For reference, I’m usually a 6 or 8 in skirts, and I sized up to a 10 in this one and it’s still a bit snug. I only wore it for about 5 minutes to take these pictures, and I’m going to try to exchange it for a 12. That said, once you figure out your size, it’s really cute on and comfortable too. It also comes in plus sizes.

I almost wore ankle boots with this look, but then I decided to pull out these cognac suede slides from last fall.

Slides are trending again this season, and you can find them at all different price points and heel heights. Mine were a bit of a splurge, but I got them on sale at the end of last season.

I was surprised to find them still available this summer at two different retailers, but sizes are limited so I’ll also link up some other options at the end of the post if you care to shop.

My bag is a few years old as well, and the size I have is no longer available, but they have it in this smaller size — perfect for going out or those times you want something dressier than your everyday “mom bag.”

I decided to show this look with a cardigan as well, so you can see how I’ll wear it this fall. I probably should have swapped out my slides for ankle boots, but you get the idea!

This is the Leith ribbed circle cardigan that everyone goes ga-ga for during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and I’m happy to report that it’s restocked in all colors!

This sweater is their third iteration, and I think it’s the best one yet. The ribbed texture keeps it close to the body, which is slenderizing, and it’s incredibly soft. Definitely size down in this one, though. I normally wear a small in cardigans, and I got this one in the XS.

  1. I’m such a fan of denim skirts. I was telling Kay & Susanne, that even my stepmom (the 70+ model on my blog) has one that we picked up at a thrift store. She even wears it in winter with tights. Which I think is the advantage of a denim skirt because it doesn’t cling to tights like knit skirts do.

    1. That is really a good point I never thought of that. I love tights but have never wore them with denium before.

  2. Oh my gosh! This outfit is perfect. You make it so easy for this 47 year old to look cute, current and classy. Since I discovered your blog a couple years ago my style has changed and improved dramatically ( ask anyone who knows me lol) Thank you.

  3. Very cute outfit combinations from all three of you. I purchased a jean skirt last year and my daughter ended up wearing it more than I did. I’m going to have to ask for it back. But I think I may just buy another one, since the
    price point is so good.
It’s a good transition piece to have.

  4. Thank you so much for the invite to work with you today.  Having a great time!  Btw…i’m thinking I just might need that skirt.  Love the color wash.

  5. I have the Universal Thread denim skirt and I love it. I was frustrated by the sizing too. I am usually between an 8-10 and I sized up to a 12. I did find that it stretched out some as I wore it but not enough to make me wish I’d kept the 10. I generally find Universal Thread to run a little large, but definitely not that skirt!

  6. Hi Jo-Lynne! Thanks so much for the opportunity to cyber-share this day with you. You look beautiful! Funny story, I bought that skirt and almost wore it, too! Wouldn’t that have been a hoot! You look great in it, and you’re right about sizing up. I had to go up in size, too. I hope you have a great day, sweet friend! 🌷

  7. About your door hardware-I am in total agreement. I feel like it’s one of those little things that can make a house feel dated. I have changed all the door hardware in my house and it instantly makes my 30 year old home feel more current. Another change I’ve made is replacing all the old yellowed light switches and outlets for white. It’s the kind of thing that’s not going to draw attention like a new chandelier, but a detail that when overlooked can stand out as old and tired.

  8. Thanks for sharing this outfit today. I was on the prowl for a new denim skirt. I’m heading to Target this weekend to look for this one. I love your entire outfit!!

  9. Love this outfit with the slides! I think the booties would look cute with the sweater too. This one is on my wishlist, I have the brown spice and gray and didn’t want 3 of the same style but I do really like how it fits. I have the blouse and am saving it for September when I start my transition to fall.
