5 Ways to Wear a Black Turtleneck

Greetings and happy Friday! I’m back with another 5 Ways to Wear post, and today I’m sharing 5 ways to wear a black turtleneck with several real-life examples of each.

A black turtleneck is such a classic winter closet staple, and it provides an easy and practical foundation to so many great outfit possibilities. Here are some of my current favorites (all come in black, even if not pictured that way):

If you don’t love a turtleneck, you can wear all of these looks with a v-neck or crewneck sweater, but I find myself gravitating to black turtlenecks in the wintertime. It’s partially because I’m cold-natured, but I also think they have such an elegant look about them… thank you, Aubrey Hepburn!

5 Ways to Wear a Black Turtleneck

#1. with Denim & a Pop of Color

Black and denim is my all-time favorite outfit pairing, and there is so much you can do with shoes and accessories to jazz it up, or you can keep it simple. with all neutrals. I pulled these two outfit ideas from deep in the archives… I think they’re both from 2016.

First, I paired a black turtleneck with medium wash blue jeans and added burgundy suede booties and a leopard clutch. You can do this with red or burgundy or pink pumps or flats too! I have hot pink suede pumps, and I love wearing them with jeans and a black top.

In this next look, I went with black leather OTK boots and added a fun plaid scarf and a coordinating beanie.

#2. with Denim & a Neutral Jacket

One of my favorite ways to wear a black turtleneck is with my taupe suede moto jacket. I actually shared the two looks below in my post on 5 ways to wear a suede moto jacket. This jacket is the perfect color and texture to top off a cozy black cashmere turtleneck, plus it looks great against the mid-wash blue jeans as well. Other color jackets like grey or camel, or even burgundy or teal would work well too.

The look below is similar, but with a different black turtleneck and booties instead of mules.

#3. with a Pencil Skirt

I put this look together at holiday time, but it’s totally appropriate to wear all winter long. This skirt has some shimmer to it, so if you feel that’s too fancy for work or church, go for a more classic tweed or plaid wool pencil skirt.

Granted, I wasn’t wearing a turtleneck with the outfit below, but I certainly could. In fact, I think I’d prefer a turtleneck with it. I wore suede OTK boots rather than ankle boots for a sleeker, more classic look.

#4. with a Bold Puffer Vest

I love pairing my black turtleneck with a puffer vest in a bold color. The burgundy vest below is my current favorite, and if you’re a regular, you’ve seen me style it multiple ways, but usually with a grey or black sweater underneath. The grey jeans are a nice change from blue jeans, but both work with this look.

In this next look, I wore my black turtleneck with a green puffer, and then I decided to keep the base of the outfit monochromatic by wearing black jeans. I added leopard slides for a fun pattern, but I would also wear black loafers or booties with this look, or even black and white sneakers like Adidas Superstars or VEJA Espalars.

Note my green mani… I wore this outfit the weekend of the Superbowl last year. Fly, Eagles, Fly!

#5. with Black Pants

You can’t go wrong with an all-black outfit, and leather leggings (faux leather in this case) are the perfect pairing to a cozy sweater because of the great mix of textures. I also wore black suede ankle boots with a tortoiseshell print heel that are swoon-worthy, and I added a pop of color in my bag. Yes, this picture was clearly taken at Christmastime, but I will wear this outfit all winter long.

Finally, a black turtleneck with black skinny pants is as Audrey Hepburn as it gets, and it’s an outfit that never gets old. I modernized the look with black jeans, and my turtleneck has a donegal pattern in the knit, which adds a little extra something to the all black look.

When wearing monochromatic looks, having a variety of textures keeps it from being boring, so my black snakeskin embossed bag is a great addition to this outfit.

While wearing all black is certainly elegant, you can always layer on some other pieces for added interest. One of my favorite ways to top off an all black outfit is with a classic camel coat.

For even more interest, you can add a patterned scarf — I love wearing leopard with black and camel.

Another alternative is a black leather jacket.

The leopard scarf really pops this look as well.

This what I actually wore to dinner and a musical in Philly last night. I decided to swap the pumps for booties. Although I can walk miles in my black suede pumps, the booties seemed more practical for the city, plus it was cold.

I did wear black socks, in case you’re wondering! The jeans kind of crunch on top of the booties, so you can’t really see them, but when I sit or move around, it looks fine because the pants, boots, and socks are all the same color.

I hope this gives you some new ideas for ways to wear a black turtleneck!

  1. Love the all black with the camel coat!  So elegant!  I am not much of aa moto jacket person, (seem to look good on someone else but not me) but I really like that look with the taupe suede jacket.  That is one I think I would wear!

  2. Ok – I’ve officially followed your blog too long……I am wearing look #2 today! I promise – I was dressed way before this post went live..haha! If you ever wonder if people pay any attention to your ideas – now you know 🙂 Thank you!!

  3. A black turtleneck is so much fun!!! I have several. Love the way you style yours. I also love adding a black turtle neck with teal and navy. Pop a jean jacket over my black turtleneck with some fun black jeans and add my scarf and I am ready. Thank you so much for your style!!! A favorite blogger of mine for sure!!!

  4. Oh, I’m in love with that last set of pics! The all black with the camel coat is just gorgeous and so classy. And the black leather jacket looks amazing too. I tend to reach for my black cowl neck when in doubt about what to wear. I don’t have another piece in my closet that’s as versatile. From athleisure to holiday party, it can do it all, lol.

  5. All of these outfits look great!  Isn’t it nice how versatile one piece can be.  Has David gone by to school yet?  Carley heads back to college this weekend and she can’t wait.  Maybe y’all can put on some good music while going through the boxes in the basement.  I love music and it just makes every chore more bearable.  You know, I think you would love having a treadmill in your home, and it’s something you would really use, especially on days like today.  Enjoy your weekend!

  6. Boy it is a bit chilly for running today. Heck it’s even black turtle neck weather in South Texas today too! My favorite is the first pic with the burgundy booties and those DL 1961 Emma jeans look so cute on you. I know their not as skinny as you like at the bottom but I liked how you cuffed them and they go perfect with those boots for a pop of color.

  7. Love these kinds of posts… and I love my black turtleneck.. in fact I have three and could add more. I really think the one with the hat is soo cute:) the one adding the camel coat plus the black leather jacket with leopard print scarf are my favorites, but they all look great. Your right nothing more classy than a turtleneck or black sweater which I also like to pair with blue jeans. It’s cold here again -8 degrees Celsius with windchill so I hear your pain lol tomorrow we get to have -16 degrees Celsius with windchill…really well at least we aren’t getting snow 🤗

  8. I would wear any and all of these outfit combinations. My go-to, never fail fall/winter combo is a black sweater, jeans, and black boots. It always looks good, no matter what. Love it!!

  9. The outfit with the pink toque & multi coloured scarf is too cute!  But, my favourite is the all black. Add the camel coat and you’ve upped the chic factor. Add the leopard scarf and you’ve reached elegant status.
I love a black turtleneck sweater paired with black pants. It’s an easy way to dress that can change up with the accessories you pair it with on any given day.
Thank you for the reminder to be versatile in wearing the clothes we have hanging in our closet.

  10. You can’t go wrong with a black sweater…maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to them. The addition of an animal print is just the crowning touch. I need to get on to doing some of these 1 items X ways posts. I like them!!! Happy weekend! XO

  11. I love to see posts where you show multiple ways to wear one item! These are all such cute looks and I am pinning them! So much to do with black and denim!!

  12. You did a great job showing the versatility of a black turtleneck. My fav was the all black with the camel coat although the look with the all black with black leather jacket was a close second. With your dark hair and eyes, you can really rock a dark column of color in ways us lighter haired women simply cannot. I’m too fair-skinned, short-waisted, and busty to wear a black turtleneck. My column of color includes a v-neck (with a scarf in winter!) and my base neutrals are warm grays and cool browns that I accent with dusty pinks, maroons, dark paprika, and teals.

  13. Love the black turtlenecks.. Looks super cute with the leopard print scarf. That’s my fav but you styled all the other outfits in a very classy way. Thank you Jo-Lynne.

  14. Great post!!!!  I hope you still wear that beanie and scarf in the 2016 picture. You look so cute and it looks so good on you.  Your dark hair really accents black well. I don’t really feel that good in black with my fair skin and lighter hair, but its so easy to pair with jeans and go, I still will wear at times.

  15. PS  I don’t have instagram.  Could you send me the link to the lavender long cardigan you posted.  So cute.

  16. I was curious on your thoughts of blue or black blazer styled w jeans ? I never see it on you although Cindi does it often
I bought them and wasn’t sure if it was flattering since I  enjoy your seal of approvals

  17. I love your style! You have inspired me to stretch my style and get a pair of jean jeggins and booties. Neither did I ever think I would wear. The booties come just above my ankle bones and rub against my ankles making them very uncomfortable. I bought another pair that comes further up on my ankle but haven’t worn them yet. I hope they feel better than the shorter booties because they look really nice. Do you have the same problem? If so, what do you do? I got them to wear to work.

    1. Hey Angel, that happens with some booties if the leather is stiff. The only thing I know to do is to wear socks that come up higher than the boot. Or a bandaid, haha! I usually do the sock thing.

  18. Hi Jo-Lynne, I love reading your blog daily!! I recently saw a link you posted for low cut socks you wear with booties. I searched for it and am not having any luck finding it. Can you repost the link? Thank you!

  19. On days that you can’t get outside to run I highly recommend Jessica Smith’s workout videos on You Tube.  She has over 400 FREE videos of all types: cardio, strength, indoor jogging, stretching, yoga, fusion, etc.  And don’t be fooled by some of her walking routines – she incorporates many upper body movements that make you really work out.  I’ve needed to cut back on running due to an injury and have found that Jessica’s workouts have been a great substitute.  Give her a try!

  20. Great looks!  For some reason I don’t have a black turtleneck sweater which is surprising considering how much black I own. The one from Bloomingdales looks so ,inch better on you than on the website. I noticed you had the pink one on your instagram pic a few days ago and again looks so much better on you!
