5 Ways to Wear the Spanx Perfect Black Pants

Happy Friday, friends! Today I’m styling the Spanx Perfect Black Pants five ways.

These pants were selling out, but at the time of this posting, they are fully stocked, so if you haven’t grabbed a pair, don’t wait! These are seriously THE most flattering pair of black pants I’ve ever worn. (And they come in petite as well.)

Spanx has dubbed these pants The Perfect Black Pant for good reason — they’re made of a nice, thick ponte knit that holds everything in place and doesn’t show through.

They have the Spanx The Slim is Built In™ shaping panel that targets the tummy, and the pull-on style hits at your natural waist for a flat front with no muffin top.

But my favorite part is the tailored back seams that elongate the legs, with the tiny split hem. Such great details!

These pants run true to size, according to the sizing chart — I’m wearing the Medium, which is equivalent to a 6-8.

I’m wearing these Vionic sandals in the first three looks. These are such great shoes for anyone who suffers with finicky feet.

As long as you can handle a 3″ heel, they have good support and are stable to walk in due to the chunky block heel and the half-d’Orsay vamp.

Plus, they have an adjustable slingback strap at the heel, and a comfy padded footbed.

They come in 3 other colors, but I love the tortoise slingback strap against the luxe black suede. It’s small details like this that really elevate a look.

On top, I’m wearing a leopard blouse, and if you recognize it, yes, it’s the one Kay Harms styled yesterday!

Unfortunately, this piece is pretty much sold out, but there are so many good leopard print tops around these days, and just about any would work with this look.

In the picture above, I have the blouse tucked in all the way around, but I have it untucked below so you can see the options.

This top runs big, in my opinion. I am wearing my usual size small, but I think an XS would be a better fit.

If you work in an office that gets chilly, or want to carry this outfit into the fall, my Nordstrom Signature cashmere cardigan in the beige humus heather is the perfect topper.

I’ve already talked about this sweater a lot. It’s the same one I showed in yesterday’s post with the boyfriend jeans, but that was the black tweed.

I’m still not sure which one I should keep. Both are such gorgeous neutrals. I really like how this beige tone keeps the look light, but also cozy.

For my third look, I changed out the blouse for a white t-shirt, and I topped it with a knit blazer. This is the burgundy beet, and it’s currently stocked in all sizes.

I really like the details on this knit jacket. It makes such a nice outfit completer because you can dress it up or down. It would look just as good with jeans and loafers as it does with these black pants and heels.

Here’s a look at the back. I like those exposed seams, and it almost has a half peplum, which adds more interest, but it’s also a flattering cut.

Oh, and this jacket has pockets too!

I’d say it runs true to size; I’m in my usual small. The sleeves are a little long, but if I sized down, I don’t think the shoulders would fit quite right.

While these looks are all fairy dressy and geared more to work wear, these Spanx pants are also great for casual looks.

Here I paired them with a cheetah print tee and black leather espadrilles for an elevated everyday look I could start wearing right now.

Then this fall, when it starts getting chilly, I can just throw a denim jacket on top.

FYI, my favorite denim jacket is 32% off at Nordstrom for a limited time. I take a small in this jacket.

Okay, so that’s already five looks with these pants, but here’s one more. This is a variation on the one with the beige cardigan above.

This time I wore a leopard tee instead of a leopard blouse, taupe suede loafer mules instead of black heeled sandals, and this cardigan is more ivory than beige. It’s also a great bargain buy, for $49, but size down. I’m in the small, and I wish I had the XS. (I also really like that charcoal grey!)

Whew! That’s a lot of outfits, but these black pants are so versatile, I think I could keep going.

In fact, I also have this picture I took when I tried the pants on for the first time, with a black and white stripe tee and the black suede Vionic sandals.

It’s super simple and could use a completer piece or some fun accessories to finish off the look, but this just shows one more option. I like the juxtaposition of the casual tee with the block heeled sandals.

  1. I am definitely going to save this post to Pinterest because I have some black pants very similar to the ones you are wearing that I have always struggled with what to wear with them. Now I have some great ideas!  I think the lighter color sweater definitely softens the look.  I will let you know when I receive the grey button up cardigan.  Have a fabulous day!

      1. The high has actually stayed in the 80’s today, with an overall gloomy sky, which I’m loving.  We had a total 3” of rain yesterday and overnight, and are expecting more rain over the weekend.

  2. Good morning…loved the post today. And I ordered the pants. I have a variety of the same tops & jackets you were showing, so I took the plunge on the pants. I’ll be anxious to try them.

Hope you can slow down some…relax if possible.

  3. Nice job on this post and I’d love to have a good quality pair of black pants but these don’t come in petite so they are out for me. But I might try those black Wit and Wisdom black jeans. Hope you get some R&R this weekend.  I recommend The Restaurant by Pamala Kelley, it’s a good easy read. Got it on Amazon and really enjoyed it.

      1. Thanks so much. I wouldn’t have even known they had them in petite size, but this is why I’ve followed you all these years!

  4. Love all the outfits today! So cute! I highly recommend anything by Karen White. She has many books that stand alone and also her Tradd Street series. I just read Falling Home but you really can’t go wrong with any of her books. Another great book is Her Last Flight by Beatriz Williams. Happy Friday!

  5. Thank you for sharing these pants. I have been looking for a great pair of black pants. Due to Covid-19, I have not been to a department store and needed a nice pair of black pants! I bought them the minute I read your post!

  6. Thanks for letting me know the Spanx pants were back in stock! I had them on my Wish List but my size was not available on Wednesday when I placed my order. I just went and ordered them now! Thanks for this post and showing me such great  options for styling them!😀

  7. I loved how you styled the pants  Jo Lynne.    So many cute ways to wear them.   I especially liked the. Leopard t shirt with the denim jacket.     You’ve been working very hard and Thank your for styling all the fun fashions for us.  I hope you have a great  and relaxing weekend.

  8. This post is just in time for when my black pants come. 🙂   I did get them ordered thanks to your help. I love all the combo’s you chose.  I have a question on the denim jacket.  For years now I’ve needed to order a lighter denim color, as I think it goes with more. The one I have is from LOFT and its a pretty dark denim and I don’t tend to grab it to wear.  Would you say this one you have from Nordstrom would be considered the lighter denim and goes with everything?  I know you have really liked this one for years and said the fit is good.  What size do you have?  I’m 5’3″ about 120lbs.  Thanks again.

    1. Yes, might be worth trying both. I would think you need the XS tho. And yes, this color goes with EVERYTHING. I actually just moved my darker one out to donate b/c I never reach for it anymore.

  9. Great post, as always!  I recommend The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell.  Don’t let the title put you off as it’s a great and captivating read.  I’m selecting it today as our Book Club’s next read.  Enjoy your weekend!

  10. Last book I read was Where the Crawdads Sing, but if you haven’t seen Bloodline or Broadchurch on NF, I highly recommend.

  11. Great outfits. The Treasure and Bond cardigan has very limited sizes in the oatmeal color (no small or medium).
This book is not a “light” read, but I loved it (it is our book club selection for August, and I cannot wait to meet on Tuesday to discuss it.) The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. Here is what amazon has to say about it: Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere—even back home.
    Have a great weekend!

  12. Another blogger posted that Spanx is matching the Nordstrom price on these pants and they are fully stocked in all sizes. Just FYI.

  13. FYI, Loft has free shipping for today only, and most things on their website are 60% off.

I love the beet red jacket you’ve styled the most – so pretty on you!

  14. I love this kind of post! I have some black ponte leggings that might work for these looks. Could you make a pin-able graphic with all of the looks at once? Or would that be a pain? I just thought I’d like to see all of those looks at the same time. 🙂
Have a great and relaxing weekend! I’m re-reading the Harry Potter series, so I’m no good for a “new” book.

  15. Just ordered the black pants. I hope they won’t be to long on me as I am only 5’3. If they fit, I can get rid of all the other black pants in my closet just taking up space. Thanks for the great post.

  16. Love these black pants!   If they came in a petite, I would be so tempted.  I do have dark black jeans, though, and can use your outfit inspirations with those. I especially love the animal print with the cardigan.  So cozy for wearing around the house. Looking forward to your 22 Days of Fall Fashion with Cyndi!

      1. Wow – thanks for the link!  I looked, but didn’t see the petite sizes.  I just ordered them!  I’ve been needing some nice black pants for ages.  And finding petites is so hard.  Maybe I won’t have to hem them up and loose the cute split hem.  I’m very excited!

  17. Oh goodness. Just read the black pants come in petite. I probably better order those too. Had already ordered regular small the other night from your link and it’s on its way already.

  18. The burgundy jackets adds such a nice pop of color..Love it. Thank you for showcasing a pair of pants that come in petite. I am 5 ft. and it is very difficult to find pants that don’t have to be hemmed. Please feature more for us petite ladies. Have a wonderful weekend.

  19. Love the outfits and that camel cardigan is my favorite sale purchase!   As for books try “The book of Longings” by Sue Monk Kidd.  Very good read!!

  20. My daughters & I love Elin Hilderbrand books! Her most recent ones, Summer of ‘69 and
28 Summers are very good. Have a relaxing weekend.

  21. My book rec for you is: Under an English Heaven (an Ellie Kent Mystery book 1) by Alice Boatwright. It’s a good, clean mystery that’s suspenseful enough to want to keep reading (with a great ending!), but nothing scary or intense—which is not my style!

  22. I love anything that Elin Hildebrand writes, but her latest book, 28 Summers, is one of my all time favorites! A perfect summer book!

  23. I’ve been reading the Poldark series by Winston Graham. There are twelve volumes. It was also a BBC TV series broadcasted on PBS. I plan on watching the series when I’m done reading the books. No pop culture here and a well written series of books. The kind of escape from today’s world we all need right now.

  24. I just love your Nsale posts! They’re very helpful. I can only imagine how hard it is to compose your blog!  I’m an avid reader; currently almost finished with The Girls of Erietown, by Connie Schultz. It’s an inter generational fast reading story taking place in Clayton Valley, Ohio. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  25. I think I need some new black pants now! LOL!

Book recommendations: I adore Elin Hilderbrand’s books. Unlike everyone else, I was not as big a fan of Summer of ’69. But I just read the newest one, 28 Summers, and it was fantastic.

Not exactly light but an excellent read: Florence Adler Swims Forever by Rachel Beanland. More Than Words by Jill Santopolo was good, too.

Non-fiction memoir by a lovely friend of mine: Braver Than You Think by Maggie Downs.

  26. Books: The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah
😊 I read about a book a week this summer and those were two of my favorites.

  27. I concur with the 2 book recommendation by Heather J. and will also recommend the Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley….so good!!

  28. I like these pants I wish they came in tall. I have a 32″ inseam, these pants are a 26″ inseam that would hit just below my knee.

  29. Hi I am just wondering how are these pants different from the Devon bi-stretch ankle pant that you styled in the Spring? I did end up getting the Devon and love it but don’t want to get the Spanx if it isn’t really that much different? Please advise. Thank you!

    1. They’re similar – these are thicker and stretchier and mold a bit more to the body. I also love the seam up the back and the notched hem. Also, I believe the Devon pants zip and hook on the side. These slip on, so there’s nothing to fasten.
