7 Things – Holiday Version

Stephanie from Metropolitan Mama recently tagged me for the Holiday Version of 7 things about myself.

1. I love holidays.  Any excuse to eat, that’s my motto.  We always get together with friends or family and make a big occasion out of even the smallest of holidays.  I love making family traditions that we do year after year.  The
repetitiveness never gets boring for me.  I also love starting new
traditions to keep our celebrations fresh as our family evolves.

2. I think Thanksgiving is one of the least appreciated holidays, as it seems to get smothered by Christmas, but I love the big family dinners and sentiment of thankfulness for our country and our God.  It’s all the fun of Christmas without the pressure of decorating and shopping for presents.

3. Halloween is my second favorite holiday.  I love to see all the kids in their costumes.  We used to have a Halloween party every year, and I demanded the adults dress up to attend.  There was always a vote for best costume.  It was so much fun.  We don’t have that any more; it got too big, but my kids dress up and go trick-or-treating in the neighborhood.  I have no problem participating in the cultural Halloween traditions as a Christian.  It has no religious or spiritual significance for our family (or to anyone else I  know), and I don’t feel like I’m compromising my religious beliefs to participate.

4. Christmas is my very favorite holiday.  I love the festivities.  I love to see Christmas decorations everywhere.  I love to hear Christmas music in the stores and on the radio.  I know it’s become over-commercialized, but I still love it.  I do wish they would hold off on decorating till after Thanksgiving, but whatcha gonna do?  I love Christmas gift shopping.  Some of my favorite family traditions are cutting down our own tree and making my husband’s family’s molasses cookie recipe and decorating them with the kids.

5. I love Christmas cards and photos and yes, even those cheesy Christmas form letters.  In a day and age of bills and magazines in the mailbox, I love December because I can go to the mailbox every day and find cards and letters from loved ones around the globe.  We hang all the pictures on the side of the fridge and enjoy them for several months before I take them down and store them.

6.
I couldn’t say it any better than Stephanie.  I feel the same way.  This was her answer.

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays.  The combination of
somber remembrance and celebration is truly spectacular.  I love the
barbecuing, the national anthem, the fireworks, and wearing red, white,
and blue.  America is a wonderful place to live.

7. Holidays are so much more fun with kids – once again, I’m echoing Stephanie’s sentiment.  The more kids we have, and the older they get, the more fun the holidays are.  I love making them special for my children and establishing traditions they will remember fondly (I hope!).

If you want to play along, please do!  And leave a comment so I can go read your answers.

  1. If I was going to do this I would just have to copy and paste in everything you said, so I’ll refrain. 🙂

  2. If I had me a blog, I would totaly play =)
I luv luv luv holidays. I decorate for most of them and even at 5 years old, my oldest asks when we’re going to “get out” our decorations for the next holiday. My favorites are Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter and Independance Day, in that order.

  3. I also love the holidays with the kiddos. We have experienced great loss in the family due to cancer, but hearing childrens’ laughter makes the hurt go away. I love the cooking and baking and warmth inside the house. Exactly how it should be.
