Spring Outfit Formula: Navy Stripes + Orange Poppy

At the risk of giving you seasonal whiplash, we’re going to skip ahead to some spring fashion today! Bright colors are trending this year, so I picked up this trench coat in the orange poppy to share with you.

Sam Edelman trench (S) // LOFT stripe sweater (S) // MOTHER Tomcat in Oui Oui (29; also at Anthro) // ballet flats (8) // sunnies (option) // Madewell hoops // similar camera bag

As a neutral lover, I’ll admit this color feels a bit much to me, but I like how the classic trench in a bold color incorporates a current trend into my wardrobe in a way that still feels polished and understated. I think a bright color can be considered understated, don’t you?

Let’s first discuss the trench. It’s the Sam Edelman brand from Nordstrom, and I appreciate the single-breasted styling. I’ve always felt like I like best in single-breasted coat styles because they aren’t as bulky across the chest area.

The mid-thigh length is nice for casual looks and isn’t as cumbersome as the longer styles that are trending right now.

This cotton blend trench is fully lined, and it has the traditional notched lapels and epaulettes. I also like the contrast of the tortoiseshell buttons and buckle.

This trench runs pretty true to size. The small fits me well over a lightweight t-shirt, but it felt a little snug over this chunky cotton knit sweater. If the bright orange isn’t your thing, it also comes in black and a traditional beige tone they call Birch.

I have a bad habit of not cinching my coats tight enough when they have a belted waist, and then I look rather shapeless… but this coat does have a nice structure to it, and of course you can accentuate your waist with the tie belt if you want.

I felt like the orange trench was begging to be styled with a navy and white striped top and neutral ballet flats.

These jeans are the MOTHER Tomcat, a straight crop style in a classic mid-blue wash with subtle fading and whiskering for a dressed-down vibe. They’re made of a soft and comfortable stretch denim that feels like I’ve owned them for years.

They have a 26″ inseam with a 14″ leg opening, so they’re slightly wider than the other straight leg jeans I have, which adds some variety to my denim wardrobe. They’re the perfect crop length to wear with sneakers and flats for now, and I also want to try a narrow single cuff with flat sandals for summer.

And of course, nothing says spring quite like navy and white stripes! The stripe crochet textured sweater is from LOFT, and it’s currently 40% off. It comes in a wide range of sizes, in both petite and regular.

Word on the street is that stripes are trending big time this spring. Not that stripes for spring is a novel concept, but this year it’s definitely having a moment.

Neutral ballet flats seemed like the perfect way to complete this modern classic look. The slightly squared-off toe makes these feel fresh to me, and they’re a great price point for leather.

To keep it simple, I carried a bag that coordinates with my shoes, and I added medium-sized hoop earrings in a vintage gold tone. And of course, oversized sunglasses make any outfit more chic!

My 17-year-old daughter has told me to never use the term French girl vibes again, but if this outfit doesn’t fit that description, I don’t know what does. I say this as if I’ve been to Paris many times, and I haven’t even been once, so do with that what you will.

  1. So cute! I love it. I still have that blue and white stripped sweater from the Nordstrom brand that you featured several years ago — the one you have to wear a cami under (they brought it back the following year in white and beige). That is a great sweater that I’ve gotten several seasons out of. The comment about your daughter telling you never to say that gave me a good laugh this am. Thank you for a blog that educates and entertains!

  2. Love the trench coat and outfit put together. I used to have a nice army green trench for spring a few years back. Time to upgrade I think. I do tend to look bulky when I do horizontal stripes and have a hard time finding vertical stripes. But, amazon had this fun angled stripes and I love it. So I can wear my stripes without looking bulky.

thank you for the daily inspiration!!

  3. I have that navy striped sweater and love it! I’m interested in the ballet flats but the reviews are so mixed- do you find them comfortable?

  4. Love all the pieces! In theory I think the orange trench is fabulous but I’m a neutral girl too so not sure if I would wear enough but it really is so cute! Have a wonderful trip…it is warm here in Southern Florida mid 80s almost every day so pack accordingly 🌴👙🩴

  5. I LOVE the idea of a trench in a pop in color although I continue to look for a bright robin’s egg blue – I used to have a trench in this color many years ago but the material broke down and I haven’t been able to replace since. I love a trench with a removeable hood that has strings too that you can tighten if you are caught walking in a rainstorm without an umbrella but I prefer removable + single breast + belted + would love zippered or snapped pockets but pockets nonetheless so……trying to find this “perfect” trench has been ….. a challenge but I love the pop of orange for sure

  6. I think the bright orange looks great on you, especially with the navy striped sweater. You look very stylish and put together.

  7. Nothing beats a navy striped sweater! The jeans are the perfect wash and I would also give them a little cuff in the summer. Not too happy with a button fly, especially when it’s hidden (so, what’s the point??) HA!! I like the idea of a pop of color for a spring jacket. I have a soft yellow trench-like jacket that I have had for years that I always enjoy wearing over denim or white jeans.

  8. Love France and Paris is a wonderful place to visit, lots of bakeries and cafes outside year round….beautiful place and so much history and wonderful people.
It’s all confidence and how the woman carry themselves (stand tall and shoulders back) Lol and that old saying of sit up, don’t slouch over when you were a kid (not sure if anyone says that now due to technology and everyone looking down…..love your family quips, makes us feel connected.

  9. Love the trench and fun color on you! Definitely going to order in Birch! Trying to decide if should size up since you mentioned it was a little snug in arms with sweater. Great outfit!

  10. I love the trench coat, especially the color. It looks so good on you. The sweater, jean, coat combo is perfect. LOVE love love! Timeless and effortless. Well done!

  11. I just bought a orange trench coat last week! I love orange and blue. As I mostly wear blue jeans I am excited to add this to my wardrobe! But it is a new color for me so I so appreciate the styling you did here! Thanks.

  12. Love the trench coat! I really enjoy your blog, have fun in FL, can’t wait to see what you will be wearing.
Sadly I won’t be watching Superbowl, as my 49’ers lost, maybe half time show, guess I’m a poor sport?😉

  13. I’d love a trench coat in a bright pink or fuschia. I am contemplating ordering the striped Loft sweater, but the number of days long sleeves can be worn here are so few, that I am questioning the need for it. That is a great outfit.

  14. Such a cute outfit! I had a trench that color back in 2012 when Tangerine Tango was the Pantone color of the year. Now I’m wishing I had held on to it! I guess everything DOES come back around!

  15. Love the whole outfit! I still enjoy the NF Laney trench you linked several years ago. The coral/orange color is one of my favorites and looks really good with your dark hair. Such a nice breath of spring! I also enjoy your posts showing storefronts in your area.

  16. Love the outfit! I have an orange trench from a few years back I’m going to pull out. I also have a navy and white striped trench! I absolutely love it. I’m inspired to wear it with an orange sweater! Thanks for all you teach us!

  17. Love love love this whole outfit! It is me through and through! The Loft sweater is on its way to me as we speak. Now to look at that trench! Thank you Jolene! Have great FL trip. Sounds like you’re meeting up with some of my other favorites!

  18. You look so cute in this outfit. The trench looks exactly like the one I’ve had for years from banana republic outlet. It’s great quality and I remember I got it for $29.99. It’s a beige color. Looks as good as the day I bought it. The orange looks good on you. I find now that my hair is almost it’s natural grey the colors I’m buying now are different than with my brown hair with Blonde highlights. I’m liking color again coming from neutrals. I’m switching out my beiges to greys etc. I thought I’d wait until 70’s to go grey but at 61 a few months ago I just decided to go for it to get chemicals off my head and I’m happy with the look. I have short hair so it only took 7 months to get here. Now it’s like I have grey highlights. :). Excited to see more Spring looks. It’s sunny and 55 today in NW Oregon. 🙂

  19. Hi JoLynne – I have to admit that while the outfit super cute, I don’t love the way the Mother jeans bunch up on your upper thighs. 😢
