A Casual Way to Wear a Kimono for Summer

Greetings and welcome back to 25 Days of Summer Fashion, my style collab with Cyndi Spivey! Today I’m sharing a casual way to wear a kimono for summer.

If you guessed with jean shorts, well, you’d be right. This is pretty much my go-to formula with cardigans and kimonos for summertime. It’s just such an easy way to jazz up your favorite white tee and denim shorts outfit.

What I love about this kimono — aside from the gorgeous coral and ivory fern pattern — is the length. It’s shorter than most, which I feel makes it less fussy and easier to wear than the longer styles.

I also love the dolman sleeves and how the light, filmy fabric gives it such a nice drape.

The great thing about a kimono is, you get the benefit of a completer piece without the added warmth, so you can wear it when the weather gets hot.

It also creates a focal point for the look and adds a nice juxtaposition against the more rugged, casual jean shorts. And there we have my 3 keys to creating a more interesting outfit, demonstrated for summer!

This kimono is currently 40% off with free shipping, and it also comes in plus sizes! The code is CYBER. And for size reference, I’m in the XS/S.

Underneath, I’m wearing my J.Crew vintage cotton tank top and Joe’s cuffed jean shorts with the 5″ inseam.

I kept my accessories fairly simple. This delicate stone station necklace adds interest without competing with the kimono, and I like how it lays on the front of my tank top. I also wore pearl earrings and a few Alex and Ani wire bangles.

This is an easy, breezy look I’d wear to a backyard BBQ with friends or other casual summer gathering.

I’m going to be back later this week with a dressier way to style this same kimono for work or church, so stay tuned for that!

  1. Do you find this kimono falling off your shoulder a lot? The kimono I currently have is constantly doing that and I am looking for one that stays put a little better.

    1. Lori….I have one just like it, but different pink, from LOFT last year and it does sometimes slip but I believe that is just the nature of Kimono’s.  It doesn’t really bother me.  I love the length of LOFT Kimono’s.  I’d like another one in different color.

    2. I don’t think so, I mean, it’s sort of supposed to — that’s part of the charm, haha! But not in a bad way at all. It has armholes and shoulder seams.

  2. Love this kimono and that’s it’s on the shorter side since I’m petite. I really like having something on my arms even in the summertime and I have a couple of kinomos but all longer as the shorter ones are hard to find. Glad to know they are still in style. I was actually looking on Loft last night and didn’t see anything I couldn’t live without but you found something for me and it’s in my cart. Thank you, thank you and enjoy your Monday out shooting pics for us 😃

  3. That is a very pretty kimono and it does add that special touch to your outfit!  We are crossing our fingers that the predicted rain for this weekend will actually happen.  It is way to dry down here so yards and fields are so parched.  Enjoy your day!

  4. What a cute outfit!  I love this kimono and just ordered it.   I’ve wanted one for a couple of years and never have found a shorter one, with shorter sleeves that worked for me.  And I’ve tried on so many!  I love this color for Summer, too.  I’m shorter than you are, but hoping it won’t be too much longer on me.

  5. You look so pretty in this kimono, JoLynne. I’ve wanted one for awhile, so I just ordered this. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  6. I picked up this completer piece last week, and I plan on pairing it with my favorite gray AG jeans for a casual work look!

  7. I bought the mauve/pink Kimono last year from LOFT, similar to yours and really like it. I just wore it to church yesterday, but didn’t think of wearing it with my jean shorts which I changed into when I got home. 🙂  Thanks for sharing that idea.  I love LOFT Kimono’s just for the reason they are shorter…..I’m only 5’3″ and they are light weight and lay nice.  You look great in yours.

  8. PS  I have the same sandals too, as I ordered them from your link when you first styled them. They are great.  Perfect color and comfortable.  So, I can copy the exact outfit easily. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I just purchased the leopard print kimono from Loft & like it a lot. It’s the perfect length . I’ve been wearing with jeans, since it’s still chilly here in CT.

  10. That kimono looks great on you. I haven’t gotten one yet but now I’m tempted.
I have a question about your shoes. Do you have a problem with the slides feeling like they are going to come off? I bought the cutest pair of Sam Edelman snake skin slides and they feel a little loose and I worry that I will walk out of them…any problems like that with yours?
    Thanks😊

  11. I love how you pointed out the ways you incorporated your “3 ways to a more interesting outfit.” I would love if you would highlight this more often when you do it with your outfits!! Love your blog!!
