A Casual Way to Wear a Tweed Jacket

Hi there, friends! I’m continuing with my style series on 3 Ways to Wear a Tweed Jacket this spring, and this time I’ve got a more casual way to wear a tweed jacket.

On Monday, I styled this jacket with a little black dress for a conservative work wear look. Here’s a little flashback for you.

You can read that post in its entirety HERE, if you missed it.

This time I wanted to go for an outfit more along the lines of what I typically wear, so I decided to take it the other direction and wear this jacket with jeans and a t-shirt.

There’s lots of juxtaposition going on here, which is what makes it fun. This is a great look for a lunch with friends or other occasions when you want to a smart-casual outfit.

Here’s a close-up view of the jacket, paired with a white tee. It’s such a flattering cut, and the black trim really pops.

This t-shirt is old and mostly sold out, but I’m currently working on a HUGE white t-shirt review & comparison post, so stay tuned for that!

My casual way to wear a tweed jacket features a pair of AG Farrah high waist ankle skinny jeans in a nice mid-indigo wash with a lived-in look and feel.

These jeans have a 10 1/2″ front rise and a 28″ inseam, so on me that is right at ankle-length.

I think the chewed hem is a fun detail and adds interest, but if you want to keep the look clean and classic, you could go with jeans with a traditional sewn hem.

I felt like this outfit needed something fun and unexpected, so I threw on these bright pink flats, and I love how they complete the look.

The bright color is a nice change from the neutral shoes that have ruled the day for so long.

Pointy toe flats are a hot shoe trend this spring, and these definitely fit that description! They’re quite comfortable too, and I love the notched topline.

Those little points of interest are what take a bland outfit and make it shine.

I can definitely see myself wearing this smart-casual look out and about when the weather warms up a bit. I suppose I could even wear it now and throw a coat on top.

In fact, I’m going to a musical this weekend at a local playhouse, and I might do exactly that!

  1. Love the idea of wearing this with a coat on top as a wear now/ wear later option.
And the shoes….so cute! It made the tweed jacket look fun as well as sophisticated.
    Great post!

  2. I’m ordering this jacket. I have one similar, but it’s shorter, almost cropped, and because of that I’ve felt like it’s not as versatile. This one has a more classic shape. I frequently need to wear jackets at my job (it involves going to court some days) so I feel like it’s a worthy investment. Can’t wait to see outfit #3!

    1. Kristin, SAME situation (court! I have to keep a jacket on the back of my office door just in case)… Jolyne, I bought the same jacket at AT yesterday, and thought it perfect with jeans and a white t-shirt … maybe because it is “tweed”, but I felt it lacked a bit something, to make it more “chanel-esque”, so I bought a single large silver button to replace the one in the middle,  and 2 smaller ones, one for each “fake pocket flap”, and voila !  Now it has some bling to it !!!!

  3. Jo-Lynne,

I love that outfit! The shoes really take it up a notch. I am very interested in the white tee post coming up.

Your paint choices for your cabinets are so nice. All my cabinets are gray. I was going to keep the uppers white and lowers gray, but decided the gray looked so good with my granite counters. I want to show my husband how great the stainless steel appliances look in your kitchen. If only one of our appliances would break, then I could talk him into replacing all of them with stainless. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Ha!

  4. I love the pop of pink in the shoes in this outfit. I really like tweed jackets – they truly are versatile – dress up or down.

The decorative scroll thingy is called a corbel. LOL. I’m sure they can replace it with a more modern one or even a metal one. Wouldn’t hurt to ask your carpenter.

  5. Love the progress on your kitchen! The colors look terrific! Ask your carpenter if he can whiz up something to cover the island posts. The tweed jacket is so classic – very Chanel 😍

  6. I love seeing the versatility in a piece of clothing to serve more than one purpose. The kitchen is coming along nicely you must be pleased. Our weather here has been in the 40’S all week and its been a feeling of spring in the air. However I think that is all coming to an end tomorrow as we expect some snow, but hey that’s the Maritimes for ya LOL

  7. That thingie on your island is called a corbel. There are lots of different designs, so you ought to be able to replace it pretty easily with one you like better. Your kitchen is looking fab.
Have you ever bought any Rothy’s shoes?
I bought a couple of basic tees at Chico’s last week and am hoping to get a lot of wear out of them (white & black); looking forward to the t-shirt story.

  8. WOW – the cabinets look great painted white.  And I agree, the big scroll type piece on the island should be much more modern.  Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Love the bright shoes (flats at that) with this outfit….it makes it much less stuffy for sure.  I remember 30 years ago wearing tweed suits & jackets….my work and church environment has changed so much that I buy much more casual clothes.  I’m looking for Easter ideas, but think why?  I’ll work in the preschool area of church that morning, I’m sure.  So life changes – but that’s OK.

Enjoy the kitchen changes – looking great!

  9. Your kitchen is looking good!  I know that you can’t wait to have it done.  Great outfit!  I hope that you will wear this weekend!

  10. LOVE the first 2 outfits with this jacket! I just went to the AT site, and ended up ordering a similar jacket from the clearance area in a Tall version. (Clearance is an extra 60% off, BTW. It was only 40% off earlier today, so for once I am happy that I waited to order.)
Going back to the Monday outfit with the dress … add me to the group that was super happy to hear some discussion of nylons/tights or other options of something besides bare skin. Because … #1 IT IS COLD OUTSIDE! and #2 VEINS and #3 WHAT-HAPPENED-TO-MY-KNEES?!?
More guidelines on this topic would be welcome!
    Thanks for all you do!!

  11. This look really speaks to me as I’m a stay-at-home mom who could add a little spice to my jeans routine. I found a similar tweed jacket at Nordstrom Rack earlier this week and bought it knowing you’d show me some great options for it! Thank you for this post!
