A Small World Story

This week I got it in my head that I ought to put together a Holiday Gift Guide.  What with all the fabulous sponsors and giveaways I’ve had this year, I figured it would be a nice way to showcase their wares and support them for the holiday season.  Seems simple, yes?

Well then I got another idea in my head.  I had such a great response when I put out a query for products to review on Chic Critique that I thought I ought to do the same for the Holiday Gift Guide.  And HOLY MOLY, are y’all ever in for a TREAT when I finally get finished.  I’ve discovered so many clever gift ideas.  Meanwhile the house is going to pot and the kids are living on beans and rice.  Like I said the other day, when I get into a project I can’t stop until it’s done.

So anyway.  Yesterday I was sorting through another batch of emails when I came across one informing me of a really fun party game called What’s a DAME to do?!  This woman and her sister invented it.  They have a website and everything – it’s Games for Dames if you want to check it out.

I zapped back an email with my address so she could send me a sample, and come to find out, she lives in the next town over!  We emailed back and forth a couple of times, remarking at what a small world it is.  Then she asked if she could just drop the game off at my house rather than mail it.

So yesterday afternoon as I was sitting here typing away, I saw a car pull up and I ran out to meet this delightful, inventive lady who has started her own business making party games for women.  (I am so amazed by all of the clever, inventive women I’ve discovered as I put together this gift guide.  I’m trying to include as many business run by moms as I can.)  We chatted for a while and agreed to get together for coffee sometime before we said our good-byes.

How cool is that!?

I just love small world stories.  If you have time, tell me (briefly! lol) about one of your small world stories.  I never get tired of them.

  1. What a great story! I reviewed a book once, and one of my best friends left a comment saying that the author was her husband’s cousin!

  2. I love that kind of thing! Just two weeks ago, I found out via Twitter that Laural @ Mamasphere lives only a few miles away from me and we’ve since met up twice. Such fun!

  3. OO very cool! Always fun to meet someone new and what a great company she has created! The town I live in now is where my husband grew up. So I meet a lot of people that know his family (there are 7 kids so lots of connections). It was all fun until I meet a few people that knew his family in my delivery room.. not quite as cool! 😉 hehe

  4. Those are the best! It love small world feelings, and stories. It is a blast.

I can’t wait to see the gift guide!! I am working on the shopping, but not getting anywhere fast.

  5. You’re very fortunate that your kids will eat rice and beans!!! Mine wouldn’t go near them with a ten foot pole! I’ll be checking things out!

  6. When I was on maternity leave with my son, we met my husband for lunch at a local restaurant. While we were there, these two older women began to talk about a chemistry teacher that was out on maternity leave. My husband tells me to stop being so nosey and I said that the ladies were talking about me. So he listened and they started to refer to me by name…but I didn’t know them. Anyways, turned out it was my co-workers mother and she said some not nice stuff about me. I wasn’t going to say anything and started to walk out of the restaurant but I decided to stick up for myself and went back and told them who I was and that I would appreciate it if they would not repeat the words again that they had said about me. There mouths just dropped open and one of them said, “Well, your son is just adorable.” like that would make it better. I definitely learned to be careful who you talk about since you never know who may know them around you!

  7. I recently moved to Washington State from the middle of Canada (2000 miles). I met some of my husband’s coworkers, and two of them know people I grew up with in my tiny town in Canada! It made my day!

  8. How about when I met Kellie (La Vida Dulce). I discovered her blog, through Musings no less, and found that we had a few things in common. I started commenting on her and she returned the favor. Pretty soon we came to find out that we not only lived in the same desert city but that we lived about ten miles from each other. Now that’s a small world! We ended up becoming friends and hung out a few times before she moved 🙁 away last month.
