And Miles to Go Before I Sleep…

So I believe I mentioned I’m entertaining tonight.  The last time I had our neighborhood Bunco at my house, I went all out.  Which is another way of saying that I made everything as difficult as possible.  I spent weeks planning the menu and I made all the food from scratch.  I even practiced recipes a few days in advance.  My husband was in hog heaven that week, sampling everything that came out of the oven.

When the day of the event rolled around, it turns out I hadn’t allotted myself enough time to do everything I had on my agenda.  With three kids underfoot, the house was still a disaster at 6PM.  I usually don’t stress about entertaining, but I had myself worked up into quite a state when I realized there was no way I was going to have the house ready for company.  Hub swooped in and saved the day, as I recall.  I was barely ready when my guests arrived, but somehow we did it.

I’m taking a different approach this time around.  I’d like to avoid breaking out in an attack of hives an hour before the guests arrive tonight.  So for starters, I’m not making everything.  For another, I have house cleaning help, which is the best thing I’ve ever done.  I’d give up coffee before I’d give her up.  I still have some straightening and shopping to do.  Oh yeah, and a cake to make.  But I think I’m in pretty good shape.  Of course, that’s probably what I thought last year at this time.

Here’s the menu plan.

Savory:

  • ham party sandwiches (I made them last year, and they were such a hit, I thought I’d make them again.)
  • chicken wing dip, compliments of Shannon
  • cheese and crackers
  • Pillsbury Savorings – cheese and spinach

Sweet:

  • homemade chocolate cake with chocolate icing
  • Hungarian Nut Roll from the local farm market

See?  Very doable.  That is, if I get off my duff and get to the grocery store.  TTFN!

  1. We were suppose to have a neighborhood block party this weekend. Just Cookies in the cul-de-sac, a meet and greet for all the new people in the neighborhood. Until the 75 mile per hour post-hurricane winds came.

Then everyone had to get out chainsaws and axes!!!

    Rescheduled for next weekend!!!

  2. Oh, girl, I feel ya. I’m hosting a get-together at my house tonight, too. In fact, 2 Fridays a month from now until who knows.

Thank goodness I finally stopped stressing over this and decided that as long as my floors are clean, picked up and the furniture is dusted, I’m calling it good.

We do snacks, and tonight I’m redneckin’ it. RoTel Cheese Dip, Little Smokies, and a cream cheese/salsa spread.

    Ain’t ya jealous?

  3. I have done what you did last year so many times and not learned from the experiences so I definitely salute you! SOunds yummy.

(This may be dumb but whats Bunco?)

  4. Can I please come over for Bunco (and the food!) tonight? ; )

P.S. If you have time can you email me some of your fav things from Trader Joes? I will be near one next month and need some recommendations!

    Thanks!

  5. Been there done that! Spent today cleaning so everything would be nice for my grandma’s 90th birthday dinner I’m doing tomorrow night.
