And So It Goes

It seems that a virus has taken hold of my two older kids and won’t let go.  I feel like I’m living Ground Hogs Day.

It all started about two weeks ago, when I got home from a Friday night event to discover that my middle child had come down with a fever.  It was mild, and by Sunday morning she was better.

Then on Thursday I got a call from school, and my son had a mild fever.  By the next day he was much better, and he went out Trick-or-Treating on Saturday and all was well.

Then on Tuesday of this week I was at the mall, perusing Gymboree and putting a few items on hold for their Friends and Family event which starts today (FYI, for those Gymboree fans out there — that’s 30% off!!) when I got a call on my cell phone.  It was the school nurse.  My middle child once again succumbed to a fever.  I brought her home, and this time it’s been accompanied head and chest congestion.

On Wednesday I got another call.  This time I recognized the number as the school nurse’s private line.  It’s a little too early in the year to have the number to the school nurse memorized, dontcha think?  Process of elimination indicated it would be my son who was keeping her company.  Sure enough, he didn’t have a fever, but he was feeling under the weather.  He has the congestion going on as well.

Amazingly enough, my youngest child has escaped unscathed, at least so far.

My kids aren’t sick enough to worry about, and they aren’t even sick enough to make them crabby.  They’re just sick enough to be quarantined and to require extra rest.  You can imagine how well THAT’S going over.

My biggest concern?  Not the swine flu or the bird flu or whatever animal flu is going around this year.  We leave for Disney World in 10 days.  We HAVE to kick this virus out the door for good.

Plus, there are those clothes on hold at Gymboree.  I only have till Sunday to get my 30% discount.  So they need to get better FAST.

Yeah, I’m that kind of mom.

Oh, and also.  My husband arrived home at 6:30 this morning after working for 22 hours straight.  (At least, that’s his story, and he’s sticking to it.)  So he’s also home today, catching up on sleep.

So I have a houseful.  Fortunately I have design work to keep me busy while I’m confined to the house.  WHICH.  I should really get started on.

What are you up to today?

  1. The poor kids, the poor Mom. It always amazes me when one kid doesn’t get it! Are you keeping her away from the others?

Bleach water – 40/60 in a spray bottle and go to town! I spray our dark couch and have never seen any discoloration from it. Works like a charm every time.

  2. Hope you all get better FAST!!
I’m doing three loads of laundry, Storytime at the Library, cleaning all of the hardwoods and maybe going to the grocery store AGAIN. Fun stuff!!

  3. Oh, so sorry. We had a bit of that last week too. But we’re not going to Disney World in 10 days. I think I might keep them home until we leave . . . if I were you.

What am I doing? I just got home from a neighbor’s house. We had a spanikopita making party with an elderly Greek neighbor. We all get together about once a month to have Yia Yia teach us how to cook Greek food. Yummmmm! Now I’m off to blog about it. 🙂

  4. Yikes! Get well soon. Sick kids always make me worried. Hubby tells me I overreact but I think he underreacts so I guess we are even.

I give my kids Emergen-C daily until their colds/viruses pass. I just give them half the adult dose. It always seems to cut my sick time down.

    Good luck!

  5. Hope the kids get better soon and that the rest of you don’t get it! It doesn’t sound like down time is in the schedule for you!! Take care.

  6. Oh do I feel your pain, my daughter has seven kids and they all but one came down with the flu..what mess thus..prayers for you all.

  7. Hope the crew gets better….I wanted to let you know about how my cholesterol changed after switching to Real food…1 year ago, 160/50 and now 125/46 …pretty good huh!

  8. I’m in the same boat as you. My 3yo has been home sick since Monday when she woke up with a fever which turned out to be a chest cold and massive double ear infection. She had no fever all day yesterday and BEGGED to go to school today, so she went. She came home a little whiny and tired and was fast asleep by 530pm. I worry that the fever is coming back and I am worried about swine flu. I’d much rather be worried about going to Disney World in 10 days. Hope your house gets better fast.

  9. Yucky!! And I was going to stop down today to give you your littlest one’s socks. I’m kinda glad I didn’t; although I would have liked to catch up with you. I’m sending many positive and HEALTHY vibes your way. I hope this all clears up before Disney!

  10. I think the key to kicking this bug is time, unfortunately. My toddler a few weeks ago (probably like five or six weeks at this point…) came down with a fever that she had on and off for about a week. I came down with it too. After the fever wore off, for good, with her, she had the congestion, cough, snotty nose, etc. I don’t know if we had any weird flu around here, but I do know that it seemed to hang on and come back as soon as we thought she was over it!

  11. I don’t know if you ever tried it or even want to but honestly I DO swear by either Airborne or Emergen-C. I used to be a school bus driver and I was sick all the rotten time thanks to being around kids all the time and being stressed out.

When I went back to college in 2006 I finally decided to give those products a try. While I’m not around young kids per se anymore I am still around a lot of germy college kids AND I’m still under a LOT of stress… yet I’ve only had about 2 colds in the last 3 years. Honestly. I just take the stuff as soon as I feel something possibly coming on and then I take it for however long I feel I should and I usually don’t catch anything.

I know they have formulations for kids.

  12. I hope they feel better soon! At some point with a recurring fever and a huge Disney trip looming, I would have them examined by a Dr.
