Are Off-the-Shoulder Tops Still In Style?

I’ve had a few questions lately about off-the-shoulder tops and if they’re still in style.

Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses were super popular a few years back, but it’s a classic summer style that really never goes out of style.

They may not be quite as ubiquitous now as they were then, but there are still plenty out there. I don’t wear them a lot, mainly because of the strapless bra issue, but I do like an off-the-shoulder top for date night and dressy summer events.

This metallic jacquard off-the-shoulder blouse at White House Black Market caught my eye for the bold yellow palm print.

I’ve had these pictures for a while, and I was waiting for the top to go on sale to post them. Hopefully it will go on sale at some point, but right now it’s fully stocked, so I decided to go ahead and get these out there to you.

This blouse is fully lined, so there’s no show through, and it’s made of a lightweight polyester jacquard material with a subtle texture to it.

It stays in place pretty easily, and you can wear it on the shoulder as well if you want to.

I actually shared it a while back in a try-on haul, and you can see how it looks worn on the shoulders here.

This top runs true to size, or maybe a bit big. I’m wearing the small. It also comes in petite sizes.

It looks great with white shorts or pants, and it also looks good with denim, but for this post I styled it with black crop flares.

Again, I was hoping to wait to share these pictures until you can get these jeans on sale, but right now they are full price.

I feel like pairing this top with a crop flare keeps the look modern and fun, but you can definitely wear a more traditional style of pant (or shorts) if you prefer.

To keep it date night chic, I went with a strappy block heel sandal. I’ve had these for a few months, and I really like how comfortable and walkable they are for a strappy shoe.

They’re also a good price, but unfortunately, they’re low inventory. This pair is similar, though, and I also like them in the tortoise… but not necessarily with this top.

You can wear this top untucked or front-tucked, and I suppose you could even tuck it in all the way around, if you like that look.

That doesn’t work well for me, but I did try a front-tuck. I like the way this shortens the top and makes the legs look longer.

I often get asked about strapless bras. I actually just pulled the straps down on my regular bra for this shoot because changing bras in the backseat of a car seemed like a risky proposition.

However, I normally wear this strapless bra with off-the-shoulder tops, and it’s the best I’ve found for providing support without a great degree of discomfort. It runs true to size.

I’m not a big fan of necklaces with off-the-shoulder tops, especially with a busy print like this one, so I opted for a pair of bold earrings instead.

I love these Kendra Scott geometric drop earrings, but they’re sold out.

She has a lot of great styles, though, and they’re lightweight for a large metal earring. This pair would work well with this look, and I also like this pair.

I also wore a Kendra Scott cuff bracelet, and I carried my metallic R Minkoff envelope clutch.

I’ve had this clutch for years, and it’s the perfect piece to pop a date night look. I love that you can wear it with dressy and casual looks, and it’s under $100.

In looking at this last full-length shot, I think I do prefer the top front-tucked, for what it’s worth. I sort of lose my waist when it’s untucked, unless it’s worn on the shoulders. But it’s nice to have the option!

  1. Wow!  My thought as soon as I saw that outfit!   What a gorgeous combo. (I had to chuckle about the bra issue! Yah, not a good idea!!!).   Makes me want to get dressed up & go somewhere!  Our choices for outdoor dining are somewhat limited around here, so if you don’t have a reservation, forget it!  Again, what a stunning outfit!  And good luck with the hip and allergy issues #notfun…..

    1. That is a great top on you. I think it would be good on redheads too. Praying for your health issues.

  2. Thanks for the early morning laugh about changing bras in the car. Thanks for all you do for us but wouldn’t go that far, would you?!🤣 Your widget says Chico’s for the top but it links to WHBM. Are they the same company? We’ve now had both go out of business in our town. WHBM a few years ago and I just heard our Chico’s is not reopening after being shut down for the virus. Sad. Love the yellow top btw!

  3. Such a well put together outfit. I don’t normally wear yellow but the pattern adds a nice contrast and goes nicely with the black jeans. Good luck with all your appointments.

  4. Love this outfit! Wish I were a fan of strapless bras because this look is amazing. BTW the IF way of life looks great on you, you look fantastic! Have a great day!

  5. This outfit is quite striking!  I love the yellow top and all of your accessories.  You really hit a homerun with today’s look!

  6. Oh my gosh I just love this outfit!!! It looks so great on you. The top worn off the shoulder, the black kick flairs and especially those sandals are perfection 😉 and I agree with you on the front tuck.

  7. What a pretty outfit, especially for a date night.  I’m glad your other hip is better and that you were able to go on a walk yesterday.  Good luck with your upcoming appointments.

  8. Beautiful blouse on you.. I was wondering about  the off shoulders look…   another hot day here… heat warnings in affect for next few days as we top 100!!!  I’ll be spending it in the pool .. minus a drive by shower we are hosting Saturday lol.. This has been a great spring so far… jumped right in to summer clothes, well for now 😉. Have a good one:)

  9. Hi JoLynne! Such a great outfit, you look beautiful! Yellow is not my color but what a nice pop of summery sunshine, that top is so cute. I love the way you detail your posts so much and give us so much content to consider such as to fabrics, feels, fits, etc. You just do an all around wonderful job. Blessings to you!

  10. You look great. Love that color combo and all your accessories. FYI…Tory Burch and Rebecca Minkoff started their summer sale today.

  11. You look really good in this outfit.  The crop flare is perfect.  I wish I was taller, as the crop flares don’t hit me in right spot.  I NEED to get to a store soon to be able to try on pants.  Just too hard to know where they will hit with the crop style.  Glad your other hip issue is resolving itself.  Now to figure out the other issues huh?  I prayed for you yesterday and this morning. Remember HIS mercies are NEW every morning……Great is HIS faithfulness.  Have a good day.

  12. I Love this outfit! The top, of course I would wear it over the shoulder. Because of my age. I do have some peep shoulder tops. Anyway, I love the yellow and it looks so good on you with the black pants and the shorts for a sportier look, that’s me. I do hope everything goes well with your upcoming appts. Have a Good Day!!😄🌷

  13. LOVE  the top!  I agree with not normally wearing a necklace with off the shoulder tops.  Sometimes tho if an off the shoulder top has a very straight neckline (which can visually widen the shoulder and bust area), I’ll add a long necklace to break it up.  Just an idea for other ladies that struggle with this!  And I’d def keep it simple with a busy pattern like this!
