Back to School with KangaRoos

Last week my older daughter made an appearance on the blog for a back-to-school fashion post, and today it’s my younger daughter’s turn! We’re teaming up with Payless to talk about sneakers for back to school.

I'm teaming up with Payless to share mother/daughter back-to-school outfits featuring the return of the iconic sneaker brand KangaRoos!

Each of my kids always gets a new pair of sneakers before going back to school in the fall, and this year R will be going to 5th grade in these bright pink KangaRoos.

If you’re a child of the 80s as I am, you may remember this popular sneaker trend. They had the little pocket on the side where we would stash our ice cream money or a house key.

Well, they’re BACK, and you can find them at Payless. They carry KangaRoos for men, women, girls, and boys, and they sent each of us a pair to try out.

Sneakers with this cool retro vibe have been in fashion for a while, and KangaRoos fit right in. I was impressed that in addition to being cute and trendy, they are super comfortable.

I wore mine walking around the mall, and my feet were so happy. As it turns out, KangaRoos were actually created by a runner who wanted a place to stow his key and some change. They were legit athletic shoes first and then became a fun trend for kids and adults alike.

R’s wearing an outfit that is typical for her back-to-school uniform. Her elementary school doesn’t have air conditioning so she will be wearing shorts and short sleeves for the first few weeks.

She loves her hot pink KangaRoos. She’s wearing the Pocketpass Jogger in Pink/Purple. She showed them to her best friend, and of course she wanted a pair too. They’re planning to get matching pairs so they can be “twinsies” on the first day of school.

And a new generation of KangaRoo kids was born! Ha!

The women’s KangaRoos are designed with more muted, deeper colors, although they do have a hot pink pair in women’s sizes if you’re so inclined. They sent me the Pocketpass Joggers in Maroon/Grey.

I love to pair burgundy with dark denim in the fall, and I just picked up this sleeveless plaid shirt, so I put it all together and I really love the look. We’re calling it, suburban mom goes grunge. Ha! It’s a bit of a departure from my typical style, but I’m trying to step outside of my box and try new things.

I love the frayed edges on the top. It is so super soft and lightweight, making it a great wear now and later piece.

Unfortunately, it sold out after we shot these photos. Womp. Womp. You could totally recreate this look with a more traditional plaid shirt like this or this, and I probably would like that better anyway. I’m still not quite sure I can pull this one off, although I do really like the colors.

I kept my jewelry minimal in keeping with the casual vibe of the look.

Be sure to check out Payless for the return of KangaRoos, and if you shop online today, you get 15% off your purchase of any two pairs of shoes and 20% off when you buy 3+ pairs!

  1. I love the plaid shirt because it looks like a vest. I am looking for more vest type styles. You both look lovely????

  2. Ok you two are adorable!

  3. LOVE the outfits both of you are wearing. Do the Kangroos have any arch support? If so, I will definitely give them a try.

      1. Awesome! No am going to check them out & hopefully buy a pair in the same color you have. Thank you!

  4. I was a little dubious about that vest/top when you first shared it (I was thinking suburban trucker) but I actually REALLY like it! Maybe it’s because it looks so great on you (and the whole look is in our school colors, lol)…but I’m definitely going to look into that for fall and transition…it looks really cute!

ALSO… I knew about the ‘roo brand but NEVER knew about the pockets!!! Love they key in there, but priorities: could it fit a lipstick?

  5. I too remember those shoes……

Your outfit is not suburban grunge….it is perfect pacific northwest mom look.

  6. Love the grunge mom look going on and I was SO excited when I saw the title of your post! I loved my kangaroo shoes as a kid. Always a place for my milk money:). I am going to have to head to Payless. And get a pair for my niece, too.

  7. I took the afternoon off from school due to an eye appointment, so I’m enjoying reading your blog sooner than later! Love the shoes and remember them. ???? You both look so cute! The plaid is really attractive and a teaser to autumn days ahead! Seeing your daughter made me a little homesick for the days when mine were 10 and 15. They’re now 30 and 35. Time flies!

  8. Kangaroos were my back to school shoes back in grade 8 – loved them and the pocket! Love the burgandy ones on you.

  9. So excited to see the KangaROOS! I need a pair and I’m so glad they’re comfortable for you (it sounds like we have similar foot problems). Love that old is new again 🙂

  10. Hi Jo Lynne,

Yeah I agree with the above comments, this look turned you in a more like trendy chic mom. Both of you look great in this comfortable outfit. Your pair of KangaRoos sneaks seem that are quite similar to new balance. Do your usually wear them without any socks. They seem to have cushioning so it might not be a problem.
    Keep it up,

    Kim
