Because it would be too easy to just write myself a note.

.!.

I thoroughly enjoyed my unexpected and unplanned blogging break.  This has undoubtedly been THE most gorgeous Memorial Day weekend in recent history.  It seems like it’s always cold and gloomy on this day set aside to honor our fallen servicemen, which I suppose is fitting, although it’s no fun for those of us who are commemorating with cookouts and fireworks.  This weekend, however, was perfect — warm, sunny, breezy — so perfect, in fact, that I was almost sad when I remembered that it won’t last.  Nothing like looking at the glass half empty to take the wind out of your sails.

At any rate, my life has been no less eventful than ever; I simply haven’t had the time or the inclination to sit at the computer long enough to string a few coherent thoughts together.  I’ve started about three posts, but none are particularly relevant anymore.

For instance, I lay awake Saturday night, (or was it Friday?) forming a post in my mind about being rudely awoken by a certain warm wet substance seeping through my pajamas that could only be attributed to the 3-year-old in bed next to me who was sleeping sans Pull-Ups because someone download da vinci code divx had failed to replenish our supply.

The thing is, I KNEW we were running out of Pull-Ups.  My husband had been warning me for days that the bag was getting low, and I think I frequented the grocery store at least three times last week.  And yet, we found ourselves once again (YES, it has happened before) at bedtime with nary a Pull-Up, discussing what to do.  My husband even offered to go buy some Pull-Ups, but I said, “Nah.  She’s been doing well lately.  She’ll be fine for one night.”

FAMOUS. LAST. WORDS.

Take a pinch of procrastination and add a heaping tablespoon of forgetfulness, and you have a recipe for disaster.  Or as I like to call it, blog fodder.

It wouldn’t have been so bad except I was almost asleep again, after changing the sheets and washing down my daughter, when my 6-year-old decided to join our joyful family bed.  I was in that strange state where you are halfway between dozing off and being fully asleep, and her sudden appearance scared the living daylights out of me.  Of course my squeal alerted my 3-year-old, who had been put back to sleep in her own bed, and the next thing I knew she had joined us as well.  After that, I couldn’t get back to sleep to save my life, and because I’m too stubborn to get up and give in to insomnia, I lay there thinking through blog posts and blog designs and solving the global food crisis.  Because that’s what I do when I can’t sleep.

But that’s hardly pertinent now that I’ve caught up on my sleep and purchased a lifetime supply of Pull-Ups.

I wish I could tell you the bed wetting incident was the only tragedy of the weekend, but I was reminded once again of my above-mentioned character flaws when I woke up this morning to NO COFFEE.  That’s right.  Not a measly ground of caffeinated coffee was to be had in my house.  And yet again, I knew this.  I used the last of it yesterday morning and meant to run out and replenish my supply yesterday afternoon, but we got sidetracked scoping out the park for Philadelphia’s Picnic With A Purpose this coming Saturday.  By the way, if you live in the greater Philadelphia area and want an invite, let me know.

I didn’t have to contemplate my coffee crisis very long before I had the kids in the car and was on my merry way to Starbucks.  I had them grind a pound of my favorite Verona to take home, and meanwhile I enjoyed a piece of blueberry coffee cake and a freshly brewed cup of their daily grind on the house (FYI… you always get a free tall coffee with the purchase of a bag of beans so don’t go when you’re already fully loaded.)  The kids were not impressed with the breakfast treats Starbucks had to offer, so we drove home by way of Dunkin’ Donuts.  And don’t ask if I sneaked a doughnut only 10 minutes after eating that piece of blueberry coffee cake, cause I’m not telling.

At least now our coffee canister and Pull-Up basket are both stocked for at least two weeks, so I should be able to rest easy tonight.

  1. Dang! I think I’ll even be able to sleep better knowing all of that! LOL. I’m glad the worse is behind you my friend. LOL.
    Hugs.

  2. Nothing makes me crankier than waking up to no coffee. When we were first married, Marvin used to hide bags of coffee beans to avoid my “we’re out of coffee!” tantrums. He is over doing nice things like that.

  3. so this weekend was perfect. we had so much fun. but I, as well, woke up to NO COFFEE. We had so much fun yesterday I totally spaced on picking up the beans. and as I type this I still have not picked up beans. I guess I am off to my local coffee house tomorrow morning as well and clearly need to pick up one of their scones again.
