Because You Never Plan to Get Sick on Vacation

Most of you know my sad story about our Spring Break vacation to Arizona and how my son ended up with the flu. Funny thing, before our trip, I was chatting with the folks at CVS Pharmacy about collaborating on a post about getting all your travel essentials at CVS. And knowing how we always manage to forget a thing or two, I figured I could also chat about how we relied on a CVS at our destination to be there for whatever we missed.

Little did I know how much we would rely on CVS during our Arizona visit. In fact, if I believed in such things, I might say that we jinxed ourselves.

We arrived at the Phoenix airport after dark, took a shuttle to the rental cars, and found the Alamo desk. We secured our car, loaded our bags, and headed to the resort.

My son was already feeling poorly at that point, but we thought he was just overtired from late nights at band practice. We assumed that all he needed to perk up was a few days in the Arizona sun.

As we drove through Scottsdale, I noted the stores and restaurants that were nearby. I mentally checked off restaurants that we might want to try, an Urgent Care Center that I desperately hoped we wouldn’t need (another premonition, perhaps?), and yes, a CVS Pharmacy. I told my husband to remember where the CVS is so we could come back and stock up on water for the room and pick up any toiletries we might have forgotten.

By now you know where this is going even if you didn’t see our trip updates. My son didn’t get better in the Arizona sun. He only spent a few hours by the pool the next day, dozing under the shade of a palm tree, before he gave up and went to our room, where he would stay for the remainder of our vacation. The only time he left our room during the next five days was to visit the Urgent Care Clinic, where he was diagnosed with the flu.

Naturally, our next stop was CVS. As we stocked up on essentials like a thermometer, tissues, water, medicine, and disinfectant wipes, I couldn’t help but think how grateful I was that we weren’t traveling outside the country, without easy access to a pharmacy and the products we’re used to.

We made good use of that CVS Pharmacy over the course of our trip, stopping in at least once a day for supplies and products to help our son manage his symptoms and keep the rest of us well. I found it strangely comforting to have the familiarity of a CVS store nearby.

We usually opt for CVS Brand products because they have such a wide variety of health-related products that are affordable and include the same active ingredients as national brands. Plus, CVS Brand products come with a money-back guarantee so you can try their products risk-free. If you’re not happy with them, just return them to the store, no questions asked. We’ve never been disappointed.

Disclosure: This is the first of three posts I’m writing in partnership with CVS Pharmacy to welcome the arrival of spring and raise awareness about CVS Brand products. All opinions are my own.

  1. Yes. Unfortunately, last year while on vacation my entire family managed to come down with norovirus. We were in absolute misery, but it was comforting to have a CVS within a mile of our hotel. We also stocked up on water, Sprite, and tons of other miscellaneous items. I was very thankful! We did pick up our kids allergy prescriptions at our local CVS before leaving, but had no idea how much we would be visiting another CVS during that trip!!

  2. CVS saved me when traveling to Minneapolis. I forgot my migraine meds, and they were able to communicate with my home store and provide me with some. That salvaged our trip to the Mall of America!! Yay!

  3. Awe always use CVS! We travel a lot and know that we can always get what we need there. Your Arizon trip will be a fond memory….someday!

  4. Yes, we love CVS as well. As soon as we moved I located our nearest one and assured our scripts were all set up to be filled there – which pretty much entailed me doing nothing which I loved!

  5. I always hit up the CVS in Cape May every summer for lots of things. I’ve purchased beach chairs there twice. Fortunately, it is within close walking distance from where we stay, since parking in Cape May is a nightmare and once you find a spot, you leave your car there unless it’s an emergency!

  6. Unfortunately we don’t live near a CVS, but when we get to “the city”, I like to shop there! 🙂

  7. I definitely like to know where the nearest CVS is when we’re traveling! I, too, have stopped in on vacations for tissues, medicine, etc.

  8. My first few years of college were really rough–illness wise. I managed to get mono twice, and have AWFUL chronic tonsillitis which ultimately resulted in a tonsillectomy my third year of college. Needless to say, as a type 1 diabetic, dealing with all of those rough spots was made easier with CVS right on campus! The pharmacist came to know me by name and was always friendly and available. Thank you, CVS!

  9. It never fails when we travel — if I forget antihistamine, child has allergic reaction; if I forget acetaminophen, child gets fever; if I forget antacids, child needs Tums. Thank goodness we can always find a CVS!

  10. There’s a CVS near the beach that we visit. Since we’re two hours from home, we are always buying everything from beach gear to medicine there.

  11. CVS is always there for us. They automatically refill my prescription and call to let me know it is ready. They have everything we need for sickness including Gatorade, chicken soup, tissues, and cold medicine. I even get makeup and magazines ( my guilty pleasure) at CVS. I even got my toddler son croc-like shoes there once. We love it!

  12. CVS saved us on our first road trip with our youngest daughter. Turns out she gets car sick in long distance rides and we founf a CVS for medicine
    for her

  13. i love CVS!! i was out of state one time and left my script at home, they called the doc and got it all worked out for me..did not ruin my vacation..they were a savior!

  14. CVS is great and I really like their store brand products. I always stop in for travel essentials before a trip and am glad when I find one nearby on vacation. The hotel sundry stores can be so expensive!

  15. We have a CVS going up in the large town next to us right now. I’ve never been to one but plan to check it out!
