Beet Suede Booties & the Perfect Chunky Black Turtleneck

Good Monday morning, friends! I’m so excited for the holiday weekend coming up! We put up our first Christmas tree yesterday, and it’s so lovely. I’ve never decorated before Thanksgiving before, but I’m really enjoying the view from my office, and it’s definitely helping me get in the spirit for putting together gift guides and holiday outfits for the blog! I also love sitting in the dark by the light of the tree in the wee hours of the morning doing my devotions, so I’m all for getting an extra week of enjoyment out of my efforts!

Today I’m teaming up with Nordstrom to style a casual outfit that was inspired by these Lucky Brand Yakeena Zip Wedge Booties in a rich beet red suede. Update: these are similar and currently in stock.

These booties actually come in several colors, but I fell in love with deep red. Most of my boots and booties are neutrals, so it’s fun to play around with a color for a change. I love how the deep red compliments the dark color palette in this outfit, but I’ve found that it also works with so many other colors in my closet. It makes a great contrast against lighter neutrals, and it can compliment certain shades of pink as well.

These have a flattering tapered, stacked wedge that is the perfect height for walking comfortably. In fact, I wore these one night a few weeks ago and walked all over the largest mall on the east coast. I think I covered 5 miles, and they felt great. My only issue was, I didn’t wear socks, so I did manage to get a couple of blisters. Lesson learned!!! (I recommend a low sock with these so it isn’t visible.)

I was drawn to the fun asymmetrical topline and the rugged finish on the suede. I also love these booties for a lower heel.

I love shopping at Nordstrom for shoes. They carry so many brands at a wide variety of price points, and I know I say it every time, but the free shipping and free returns can’t be beat. When I’m unsure of a size, I order both and return the ones that don’t fit. Easy peasy!

Also, you may not know this, but they take returns for up to 6 months after your purchase, so there’s no rush to get to the post office. I love that. Yes, they’re paying me to say nice things about them, but I would say all these things anyway and have many times before I started working with them. Their customer service far surpasses any other retailer that I’ve dealt with.

I’m also excited to share this turtleneck with you because let’s face it, a girl can never have too many black sweaters, and this one by Caslon is super soft and cozy. It’s that really soft, stretchy knit that you just want to cuddle up in on a cold winter day.

I’m always looking for sweaters that have some extra details, and this one is full of them — like the ribbed texture on the shoulders and sides and the split step hem.

I also like how the turtleneck has a bit of a drape. It’s not a cowl neck, but it does drape in a flattering way so it exposes some of your neck. I don’t like tight turtlenecks, and this one is perfect, in my opinion. It has a relaxed fit, so I’m wearing a small. It also comes in ivory, grey, and plum.

These are the DL1961 Emma Power Legging Jeans in the Token wash. I’ve been singing the praises of the Emma skinnies for years, and this super saturated indigo wash is flattering and perfect for so many occasions because you can dress them up or down. For a less expensive pair, these Wit and Wisdom Stretch Denim Skinny Jeans come highly recommended and are just $64.

I finished off the outfit with a blingy pendant. I felt like the sweater could use some bling to break up all of the black, but I’m such a plain Jane that I’ll probably wear it without a necklace more often than not. I also carried my Clare V leopard print clutch.

I love how the red booties amp up an otherwise basic outfit, and the leopard clutch is fun for added interest.

    1. I can’t express enough how unlike me it is to decorate before the turkey is put away. I am usually a stickler about that. But I enjoyed my tree so much last year and wished I could have it longer, so I decided to start early this year. Nothing else is going up till Friday, though. 🙂

  1. Hi Jo-Lynne! Thank you for sharing with us every day! I look forward to reading your blog each morning! You have inspired me to invest in a quality pair of premium denim (I’m so tired of my jeans sagging and stretching out!), but I’m 5’10 and can’t seem to find any for tall girls. Do you have any recommendations?

    1. Hey Summer. Most premium brands do run long and are intended to be hemmed for us shorter gals. Let me know what style you’re looking for (skinny/bootcut/straight) and I can give you some more specific recommendations. 🙂

        1. Gotcha! I would look for skinny jeans with a longer inseam. Since ankle length jeans are trending (28 or 29 inch inseams) you will probably find that a full length style (30 or 31 inches) will be ankle-length on you. For example, the Emma style I love has a 29-inch inseam, and it’s almost too long for me to call them ankle (although I like where they hit for most purposes.)

The DL1961 Florence has a 31-inch inseam. They are too long for me, I have to have them hemmed, so they may work well for you. The fit is fantastic. (Some Florence are 30 inches, so pay attention if you look at other washes. I’m guessing you want at least 31 inches.) https://bit.ly/2guUp5q

Same with this AG pair: https://bit.ly/2guUp5q

AG and DL are my 2 favorite brands.

These 7 for All Mankind are 31 inches and a cool wash: https://bit.ly/2g9jPS6

Ooooooh these Frame skinnies have a 34 1/2 inch inseam! A girl in the comments is 5’10” and loves them: https://bit.ly/2guT4f7

I have a similar pair of Frame (29 inch tho) and the fabric is verrry tight. It’s supposed to be, and it’s stretchy but doesn’t bag out. They are flattering, but don’t be surprised if they look super skinny when you pull them out of the box.

I hope that gives you a starting point! I always recommend buying on sale, so maybe you can find something similar to these at a better price.

  2. Okay, I LOVE these booties! The color is so fun and the shape is so flattering. I’d really been wanting to try some wedge booties, so I ordered the Yezzahs the moment I saw them on sale. I may just be super picky, but that front panel on the shaft doesn’t seem very flattering on me. I may try these instead, I really love the asymmetrical shaft.

  3. I finally ordered some burgundy booties last weekend. Everytime I thought: burgundy booties would really look great with this outfit! Haha.It can be so simple right. Very nice look and you probably know by now that I looooove that clutch!

  4. Love the booties! I just sent back a similar red pair in my last trunk club trunk. Maybe I made a mistake. Today we are driving up 95 to visit my inlaws in Philly and, yes, it is freezing! Especially for this Texas girl!

  5. What a fun touch to your outfit! i am trying to not purchase anything else for myself but those booties might be the very last item I buy before Christmas. Thank you for the fun color to spark up my (boring)outfits. Red is perfect for Christmas Right?

  6. Love the pop of color with the burgandy booties! I really like the style of the sweater, nice detail. I get my extra week of the Christmas tree at the end of the season! Growing up, my mother always left the tree up until after Russian Christmas. No clue why, as she was from Germany, so go figure! I wish now I would have asked more questions, since she has passed away. Isn’t it funny how we do certain family traditions, and not really knowing why! As far as an appetizer, what about making a flavored cheese ball? I had one yesterday that my sister made using the Lipton Onion Soup mix and another one that had roasted red peppers in it. She served both with onion & whole wheat crackers, they were a big hit. And you know Pinterest, where you can find anything under the sun!

    1. Oooh I do like the cheeseball idea.

My husband is adamant about taking the trees down as soon as Christmas is over. He has this thing about leaving decorations up after Christmas, and he always goes into a rampage taking everything down. I like to get it all down by New Year’s Day, but I don’t mind enjoying it for the week after Christmas. This year we are traveling that week, so I expect the live tree will get taken out right away. (Fire hazard and all.) Maybe I’ll get away with leaving my fancy tree up till New Year’s, tho! 🙂

  7. I love having the tree up for Thanksgiving. It brings a festive start to the season. That being said, mine went up on Saturday! Also would love to hear your recommendations for the jeans for us tall, 5’9″, gals!

  8. just read through the Martha Stewart Living December edition….tons of great appetizer ideas that got me completely inspired! I laughed when I saw your tree pic up on instagram! I said to myself, “she won!” Also, I have to tell you I had a good chuckle when I opened your “Coffee Talk” yesterday on my phone and with the ads that popped up a very naughty word appeared on one of the tee shirts it was promoting……I first thought you were recommending it but soon realized it was an ad! LOL!
We here at the Curti household will put the decor up on Friday…….I just can’t do it yet! 😉

  9. YAY – a beautiful outfit that this “apple” body type can copy! You look gorgeous as always! And I have always been a “no decorations until after Thanksgiving” type of gal too, but this year I’ve decided to break the rules and I have up almost all of our decorations already. I’m finding that it is helping me get in the Christmas spirit!

  10. I just went to Nordstrom to put that black sweater on my wishlist. It sounds like what I’ve been looking for in a black sweater: soft, cozy, with a bit of interesting detail. Thanks for the idea.

  11. I’ve loooved this outfit since you first posted it on Instagram. I’m probably not going to be able to resist getting a pair of red booties.

As far as appetizers go, hummus is super easy to make at home and you can add different flavorings (roasted garlic, roasted red pepper, chipoltle, chives, fresh basil, etc.) Serve with veggies or pita chips.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  12. Lots of cute sweater posts as of late! What do you normally wear under your sweaters? I can’t get away with only a sweater here in the Midwest. I need layers or I freeze. I have been wearing the BP Nordstorm Junior section tanks for a few years. They are almost like shapewear as they have some stretch in them. Do you have a favorite shirt/tank for under button ups/sweaters/etc. ? Happy Thanksgiving!

  13. Another nice outfit Jo-Lynne! I am so glad you have one tree up already. As you said, you have one extra week to enjoy its beauty and it’s a great place to sit and do your daily devotionals. In no way do I think it takes away from Thanksgiving. Really, we have so many things to be thankful for every day.

  14. Jo-Lynne – is there a way to search your blog for a specific item? I’m looking for the link to the honeybee watch you posted a few weeks ago. THANKS so much!

    1. Yes, there is a search bar at the top right, over my picture, and again on the sidebar. If you’re on mobile, it’s way down under all the posts and under my picture. Do you see it? It’s pretty good. I think that watch is probably a Kate Spade, if that helps you search.

  15. I bought the Caslon sweater last week in the cream color. It fit perfect and it’s not itchy! I think I need the black too!!????

  16. Love the red boots. Ordered a pair myself today after seeing your post. Went up 1/2 size as it’s all they had near my size. Hoping will socks it will work. Thinking on that sweater as it is a nice style. Love your posts as usual!

  17. Hi Jo-Lynne,

I really liked the sweater you are wearing, but when I went to the site, I saw care instructions that say to hand wash. I was just wondering if you actually hand wash this sweater or how you clean it. It seems like so many
clothing items say “hand wash” these days. I need something that I can at least wash on a delicate cycle in the
    washing machine.

    1. Hey Camille. I have a lot of AEO sweaters (or my teen daughter does, actually, lol) and I wash all in cold on the delicate cycle in my front loader and lay flat to dry. I haven’t had any problem. 🙂
