Versatile Layered Tank + A Discussion About Fabric Care

Are y’all getting whiplash yet? One day it’s a summer outfit, the next day it’s fall, then it’s back to summer. I KNOW. This is a crazy time of year for the fashion industry.

There is still a lot of summer left, so while I’ll be sharing some fall looks here and there to help you plan ahead, I’m going to continue showing summer outfits as well for a while.

Today’s summer look is brought to you by Faultless Premium Starch. After I share how I put this outfit together, we’re going to talk a little bit about fabric care.

how to style a layered tank for a classic black-and-white summer outfit for women over 40

I picked up this layered tank at White House Black Market a few weeks ago. I’m a huge fan of their layered tops because there’s no need for a cami or under layer, and you really don’t even need shapewear. They’re easy to throw on and go. It’s a bit on the pricey side at $68, but I expect it to go on sale before too long. I’ll keep an eye on it and let you know.

In other news, my white ribbed asymmetrical top IS on sale for $37, and there are lots of other cute pieces at White House Black Market that are marked down 40% off their sale prices.

This particular top is simple but sophisticated. You can dress it up or down, depending on the occasion, and it will make a great transition piece as we head into fall. You can easily throw a fitted jacket or cardigan on top for a completely different look.

The under layer is a soft knit that feels great against the skin, and the top drapes gently over the body without clinging. FYI, it also comes in white.

I paired the top with my favorite white skinnies and accessorized with a stone tassel necklace. I like the subtle blue and green hues in the stone set in light gold against the black top. Then I added my Stella & Dot Stone Tile Ring and a gold cuff bracelet.

Neutral wedge sandals and a leopard bag complete this easy summer look. I’m super excited to see that Nordstrom has brought this Sole Society foldover leopard clutch back!!!!! It’s only $39 and SUCH a great piece to have in your closet. If you’ve been following my blog or Instagram for long, I’m sure you’ve seen how often I carry this.

These shoes are only available in black, but they are on sale, and they are some of my most comfortable wedge sandals. I linked to a similar pair of nude sandals below as well as a similar clutch.

I would wear this outfit to church, out to lunch with girlfriends, or on a date with my husband. For a more casual look, I’ll pair this layered tank with jean shorts or cuffed blue jeans and flat sandals. I love how versatile it is.

Now let’s talk fabric care for a sec. Clothing is an investment so I take great pains to care for my wardrobe properly so it lasts as long as possible and is in good condition for resale. I always read the labels and hang things up or lay them out flat to dry if instructed. I’m not a fan of the iron, but I use it when I have to — especially when I’m going to do a photo shoot. I’ve learned the hard way that the camera is not forgiving when it comes to wrinkles.

I was recently asked to try out Faultless Premium Starch and see how it performs. I always thought that starch was for my husband’s dress shirts. I had no idea that it can be used on almost all of your clothing to reduce ironing time and help keep them looking new! I’m all for spending less time behind the ironing board, so I was excited to try it out.

I’ve started using Faultless starch on my clothes that require ironing, and I love the results. It doesn’t make them stiff at all, but it has made some of my older pieces of clothing feel new again, and everything seems to stay wrinkle-free longer when I use the starch. Who knew!?!

Starch is also great for household hacks and craft projects. There are tons of ideas for using Faultless Premium Starch on their Tips and Tricks page. Another plus, the Faultless Premium Starch bottle is designed not to clog, flake, or spot.

You can purchase it in the laundry aisle of major retailers, or use the Faultless Find a Store tool. Grab a coupon and try it out for yourself! Also be sure to like Faultless on Facebook for more tips and tricks for using Faultless Starch.

  1. You look great in this outfit! The top looks so cool and comfortable. I also want to give the Faultless line a try from cleaning my iron to vaccuming up pet hair.

  2. Love this outfit, JoLynne. The top is so pretty. I like the fact that it looks layered, but you didn’t have to actually put two pieces together as it is already done for you. I also like the sheer look of the under layer. I also love your necklace. I’ve gotten a few tassel necklaces since fringe came back around and love how easy they are to style with so many things. Great look and thanks for the tip about the spray. I hate ironing too and will usually have a pile sky high before I finally get around to doing it…..that shows I have too many clothes. Ha, ha. Glad you are having a fun vacay! – Amy

  3. I love your blog and always appreciate the extra tips you give! Thank you so much for all the time you put into your posts. It has helped me tremendously.

  4. I never iron and I am sure my summer pants would look so much better if I spent a bit more time on them! Love the top!

  5. I love this outfit! Simple, yet very classy. FYI—–Nordstrom has a cute leopard clutch dupe by Sole Society. It is not on sale, but very reasonably priced. The fabric has a soft, felt-like feel and is a great size. It came yesterday and now you have given me a great idea of what to wear with it! Thanks!

  6. You look great as always! I used to use starch all the time. But I had been having issues with scorching some of the finer silky fabrics so I purchased a steamer a couple of months ago. I LOVE IT! I used to hate ironing too and wasn’t very good at it. The steamer I actually find fun and use it almost every day! It’s super quick and easy to do. I bought a stand up one that has a hanger already affixed to it and feel like it’s been a fantastic investment. You can’t get creases with it if you want those, you still need the iron. But otherwise it’s been a godsend and shaved off time in the mornings for me getting ready. I have even been wearing clothes that I’ve had but never wore simply because of the ironing factor.

  7. Cant beat classic black & white! And you wear it well! Love my spray starch! You can tell I’m a Baby Boomer if I know all about ironing! I love to iron! I iron my husband work shirts, using Faultless spray starch. We’re not talking work shirts, as in go to the office shirts, we’re talking his flannel & chamois shirts he uses for his part time surveying. And tablecloths, my pillow cases……LOL! I have a steamer as well, and that works great for a quick touch up.

  8. I noticed the necklace is from Loft. Today it’s 30 percent off with the code they provide. Also, they have a LOT of sale items with additional 60% off, no code needed. I have a cart full of pants, shirts, dresses, and a different tassel necklace for under $200. I love Loft.

  9. I have used Faultless starch for years. It’s the only brand I will buy. I am currently teaching my teenaged boys to iron their dress shirts and I am going to use the Faultless’ How to Iron a Shirt video to help teach them.

  10. Lovely top! I like the layered look – when I don’t have to create the layers.
I still iron, but I also love My Little Steamer. It’s perfect for delicate fabrics (rayon, lace, wool) and blends, and embellished items. It’s also handy for getting wrinkles out of drapes and such.
The info on starch is interesting. My daughter uses it. I’ve never tried it, but now I might!

  11. I am the WORST at ironing!! I guess I never really learned how to do it properly. I have started taking a lot of my clothes, and my husband’s to the dry cleaner! They wash and iron for $2. I guess if I learn how to do it I could save that $ for clothes!
And Jolynne, you look gorgeous as usual! You have made me a WHBM fan! Sorry about your arm, hopefully it heals quickly. Enjoy your vacation!

  12. I like the tip of removing chewing gum. Chill, scrape off excess, then saturate with pre-wash or cleaning fluid.

  13. You look beautiful as always! I really love this outfit. It’s so chic. My mom was from Massachusetts, and we often vacationed on Cape Cod. The eastern states are so lovely. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

  14. Oh my gosh I bought the SAME WHBM black tank a couple of weeks ago AND the LOFT pendant necklace!! I got the necklace on sale and get SO many compliments on it. My best friend bought one too! You look great in this outfit – love it! Nordstrom sale has some really cute long sleeveless vests that would look great over your outfit if you wanted to add another layer for Fall.

  15. I just adore this look! I hunk in definitely going ringer that top when it goes on sale. I’ve seen you and other bloggers style that leopard clutch and I’ve wanted it for the longest time. Thanks for letting us know it’s back…I just purchased it and am so excited to get it! Just can’t tell you how much your blog has helped me; thanks sooooo much for all your inspiration!

  16. I like their tip about using hairspray to get rid of ballpoint ink stains. I have hairspray in my house and it seems simple enough.

  17. I appreciate the tips for cleaning your iron. Thank you for the link to the starch page. They have a lot of useful tips. Even ones for organizing!

  18. Such a cute top! You always look put together whether it’s “dressed up” or “dressed down”! (More casual that is.)
Thanks for the tip on the spray starch-I do have some but don’t use it often-may have to get it back out, lol!

  19. I have used Faultless Starch for several years and am always amazed at how much it helps my clothes. The cheesecloth ghost under the “Crafts” category is fun. My children loved it when they were young.

I also have a tip for people who rent their home. If you want to change the color of your walls or add wallpaper to your home but are unable to because of your lease, then buy fabric that you would like to use as wallpaper. Cut the fabric to the correct length and soak it in Faultless Liquid Starch. Place the fabric on the wall just as you would wallpaper. When you get tired of it or are ready to move, simply peel it off the wall and clean the wall with a damp sponge. This will not damage the wall and is an easy and inexpensive way to give your room a different look!

  20. I love your outfit! You always look adorable! I use the faultless liquid starch and mix it with water in a spray bottle. It doesn’t leave as much buildup on the iron when using it this way. I love using starch but then again I iron everything.

  21. I use the Magic Sizing by Faultless for years. Someone at work asked me how I get my cotton blouses to look so crispal so I told her to get the Magic Sizing. Great that you incorporate products with your posts.

  22. I have used faultless products for years and love them . Most people don’t iron their clothes anymore and it shows.

  23. Visited website. My favorite one is removing ballpoint ink with hair spray. I love using starch when ironing.

  24. How to clean your iron. I didn’t realize Faultless had an iron cleaning product; I’ll have to keep my eye out for it. My iron needs it desperately.

  25. Thank you for the post and tips on ironing with Faultless. I really like it and think it’s a great product. Since you mentioned fabric care tips, I have a question and maybe others out there can help…I have some t-shirts that get very small holes near the front waist line. I don’t wear belts so that would not be the reason for the small holes. I am clueless how these can suddenly appear. It’s not moth-eaten. Does this ever happen to your t-shirts? Any ideas?

  26. I like that this reminded me about starch. I know my mom used to use it, but I haven’t ever. I checked out the tips and apparently have been ironing shirts wrong this whole time. I will be picking up a can of Fautless next time I’m at the store and wil be giving it a try!

  27. My favorite tip is about how to remove dog hair. With 2 dogs at home, this is definitely helpful.

Thanks for the chance to win!
