Black Cigarette Pants with a Long Cardigan

Happy Thursday, friends! Today I’m back with the 3rd look in my series on 5 Ways to Wear Black Cigarette Pants.

This is what I hope is a work-appropriate outfit for many of you, and I styled it with two different pairs of shoes to show it dressed up or down.

A lot of you seem to like cardigans for work wear, so I paired my black pants with a longline camel cardigan over an ivory jersey tank.

My camel cardigan is pretty much sold out, but it’s a closet basic that most of us probably already own.

If not, LOFT has this ribbed open cardigan that I’ve styled before, and Treasure & Bond has a more casual version with exposed seams (you know how I’m a fan of those!) And you can really wear any color cardigan with this look.

This mixed jersey tank is another piece you’ve seen me wear over and over. I love that it’s bra-friendly and conservative enough to wear alone without the cardigan if you need to. It’s TTS; I have the small.

I’ve discussed these pants at great length in the past two posts, but in case you missed them, they’re a great all-season wardrobe staple that can be dressed up or down.

They run a little small, so I recommend sizing up if in between.

This first look is my favorite — with snake print pumps.

These are the Sam Edelman Hazel pumps, which I have in about 5 colors. Unfortunately this snake print is selling out, but if you need a good pair of classic pumps, these come in lots of solids and patterns.

A lot of you say you don’t wear heels, but if you can, pumps really add an element of elegance and sophistication to an outfit.

In this case, they also keep the cardigan from looking frumpy.

Here are some more options for snake print pumps, in a variety of heel heights and price points.

This Naturalizer pair in the pastel snake print has a similar color palette and a walkable 3 1/4″ heel, and they come in regular, narrow, and wide widths.

I also wanted to show a look with flats, so here you can see how the outfit looks when I trade my snake print pumps for classic cognac leather loafers.

These loafers are also by Sam Edelman, and they’re surprisingly comfortable! I expected them to be stiff, but the leather is very soft and supple. They also have a padded footbed for extra comfort.

I like the saddle leather okay with this outfit, but I think the black beach multi would look even better. I love the contrast of the snake print and the solid black leather, and the print would add some nice texture to this simple outfit.

But like most of us, I wore what I had in my closet instead of buying something new for one outfit.

The loafers make this look very conservative, which may be fine for the workplace.

For my personal tastes, this second look is a tad stuffy. I’d like it better with a t-shirt and denim jacket, but that might be too casual for most office dress codes. Maybe some of you will have other suggestions…

Anyway! I hope this gives you some new ideas for styling your black work pants.

Outfit Details:

black pants (option) // ivory tank // camel cardigan (options here and here) // snake print pumps (option) // cognac loafers // similar necklace // earrings // tote (option)

By the way, this plaid wool blend reefer coat that I styled last fall with these loafers just went 50% off! It runs big; size down.

Trends this fall are all about returning to the classics — plaid, checks and tweeds, structured silhouettes, and quality fabrics. Jo-Lynne Shane styles a fall look featuring the Ralph Lauren Wool Blend Reefer Coat in Sienna Plaid.

  1. Love this look both ways. I really like to wear camel with black it’s very classic and chic. I will definitely wear this look but wear black loafers…. Thanks for the inspo😉❤️

  2. Before classes were cancelled today, I was planning on wearing this outfit with the Loft cardigan I bought and a black long-sleeve t-shirt (with boots). How about with leopard flats (as soon as the winter is over)? I thought those would look nice as well. Love this look!

  3. For the second look, how about one of your beautiful sweaters with a vest? We have business casual dress code, and I do a lot of walking, so I like the flats option but dressy flats with a nice sweater would keep it upscale. Or would you say vests are on their way out?

  4. My daughter bought me the j.crew long, collarless sweater (coatigan style) for Christmas which I can use with your ideas. I don’t wear a lot of scoop neck styles, so would probably go with a silky ivory button up. Always love your patterned shoes and I need to break down and buy a pair. It definitely adds a lot to this outfit!

  5. While I don’t need work outfits this is a really nice classy look. I love camel and black paired together. I would even wear a leopard print flat with this look, and could even swap out the tank for a nice tee…. Maybe even pair the look with a blazer ( the right length of course) , If someone still wanted it more work appropriate. The larger bag could also be swapped out for a more casual vibe too like a smaller crossbody, if you wanted a more casual look. Would you also wear your white sneakers with this look, but with a tee, Keeping the cardigan?

  6. What a nice outfit Jo-Lynne!  I agree that the snake print shoes add a special touch to the outfit.  I really like your five ways to wear an item posts, and I like then being spread out.  I hope that I’m not the only one that, at times, struggles with different ways to wear say, a particular pair of pants.  I hope you have a great day!

  7. I like both of these looks but I do think the cardigan would look better if it were a little shorter. Don’t get me wrong, I love my cardigans long but I think with this outfit shorter might be better.

Have you shared that necklace before? I really like it too.

    Have a blessed day!

  8. I love that you showed the black pants with the saddle color shoes. I always think the shoes have to match the pants. This looks much more interesting! These options look beautiful!

  9. Love both these looks, but the heels are my favorite. Just adds that pop to the outfit! I can recreate this look with a burgundy cardigan and grey snake skin wedges – thanks! 🙂

    1. I will definitely do more – open to wardrobe items to style. I have a 3 ways post I want to photograph on Monday… not sure if I’ll do separate posts or put them all into one.

  10. My goodness!!! I just love how long your hair is so much … I can hardly look at the fashion!! LOL, you look beautiful!!! Have a blessed day!!

  11. Thanks for the styling with a long sweater. Another blogger had a long blush pink sweater featured so I bought it yesterday and today paired with my cigarette pants. Loved the look!  Thanks!

  12. I really like your whole outfit, camel sweater, ivory top, black pants, and especially your snake skin pumps. I looked up your pumps and is the colour called “dark wheat” on Nordstroms site? Also, I’m looking everywhere to find a camel cardigan like yours. I want to duplicate this outfit it’s gorgeous! So far no luck on the camel cardigan. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

    1. They’re the HAZELNUT TROPICAL SNAKE – it may be a discontinued color, as I got them last year. The cardigan is a really nice color, isn’t it!? I haven’t seen anything quite like it yet this year. I’ll keep looking!
