Fall Fashion Inspo: Blanket Scarf + OTK Boots

Good morning, friends! Today I’m styling a blanket scarf and over the knee boots. I’ve been meaning to style over the knee boots for a while. I’m not sure why I’m just getting around to it. I mean, let’s face it. It’s not exactly OTK boot weather in these here parts just yet, but I do try to think ahead when I style outfits for these seasonal series.

These boots are from last year, but the brand is Dolce Vita and this pair is very similar. I really like this brand of shoes. They have a luxurious look and feel to them, and they’re so so comfortable. I purchased mine on sale last winter, so if you wait, they’ll probably go on sale again.

They have this interior zipper that allows them to slide on and off very easily, and they don’t fall down like some OTK boots do. If you prefer a flatter heel for your OTK boots, they have that style too.

On top, I went with a white tee and a blanket scarf — super simple. I just ordered this oversized square scarf from Asos, and I love it. It’s a very popular print I’ve seen it all over the web, but I love the combination of colors so I decided to be a sheep and get one too.

True confessions: I cut my scarf in half! It is soooo big and bulky, and I KNOW that is the point, but last year I heard several people say they cut their scarves and liked them so much better. I didn’t have the guts to do it then, but last week when I went to style this outfit, I was so annoyed with all the fabric that I grabbed my sewing scissors and started snipping. I just folded it diagonally and cut along the fold, from one corner to the other. It was super easy, and now it’s so much less fabric to deal with. It’s still warm, but it looks cuter (I think) and it’s much easier to manage.

Now, let’s discuss this bag. It’s part of the new Stella & Dot Covet collection of fine jewelry and leather accessories. As a S&D Stylist, I always try a few things from every new line so I can be informed (tough job, right? ha!) so I decided to order one of these new bags. I chose this burgundy suede bucket bag because I always try to have a bag this color in my fall/winter wardrobe, and I retired my last one because it was a little too small for everyday use.

This is the perfect size for me. I don’t need a huge bag, but I do want one that’s big enough for my wallet, sunglasses, cosmetic case, inhaler, and a few tissues. This is perfect for that. Oh, and it has a large inside pocket big enough for holding my iPhone 7 Plus. The suede seems to be good quality, and it has some lovely details. I like how it has a covered magnetic closure so you don’t have to use the tassel flap and snap that to make it secure. I’m lazy, plus I hate to futz with opening and closing my bag when I’m making a purchase and checking out at the cash register. That’s why I almost never buy a bag with a zipper. See? Lazy!

My t-shirt is from last year, but they’re carrying it again this year. It’s only $18, and it has a nice scoop neckline — not that you can see it here. It is long, and it has a shirttail hem, which is not my favorite, but it works well with scarves, and it’s great for layering under long cardigans. Plus, you know, $18.

By the way, if you need tips on how to tie a blanket scarf, I did a tutorial last year that has 3 ways to tie a blanket scarf, and it does address the way I’m wearing mine here. I actually wish I’d pulled mine up tighter around my neck. It turned out kind of drapey, and the point is to keep your neck warm, after all.

I asked on Snapchat — or maybe it was my Instagram Story — if people actually wear blanket scarves like this or if it’s just a Pinterest phenomenon. Ha! Lots of people said they do, but only when they’re going to an event where they will be outside in the cold for a period of time.

I’m wearing my Hudson Krista Crop Skinnies with this outfit because I don’t like extra bulk inside the boots around my ankles. I also think OTK boots look best with jeans that fit snugly in the thighs, and these jeans are a Super Skinny style. These are similar, but I got mine for $98 last fall on a Nordstrom sale, so I would definitely recommend waiting for a sale or Denim Days event because those are priiiiicey! I think the released hem is making them even more $$ than the ones I’m wearing, which do not have a released hem.

Also, they’re super low rise — 7 1/2 inches, so you have to be okay with that. I like a lower rise with a front tuck because it seems to give my body a better overall proportion, but I prefer a higher rise when I’m going to let my shirt hang out becasue it creates a smoother midsection. There are so many factors to consider, aren’t there!?! Generally, a higher rise is more universally flattering because it helps hold everything in and smooth things out.

I hope you’re having a good weekend so far! My husband and I finally got our dinner date last night, and it was fantastic. I had octopus and an amazing mushroom soup, and then for dinner I had some kind of fish I’d never heard of (lol) but it was delicious. We skipped dessert and headed over to the high school to catch my son’s band performance. They performed after the football game, so the timing worked out perfectly.

If you’re wondering why I’m wearing glasses in this post, I had a minor kerfuffle with my contacts so I had to get new ones, and I just can’t get used to my new prescription. They tried to put me in monovision lenses (I think I mentioned it earlier this week — or maybe it was in my daily email) and they’re just not working for me. These glasses have progressive lenses, and I do fine with them, but I really am not liking the contacts for correcting both near and far sighted. Do I have to switch to glasses full-time, or should I try again with the contacts? I hear some people have to try a few prescriptions before they get something they can live with.

By the way, yesterday afternoon I posted a “bonus post” with my top picks from the Tory Burch Fall Sale. The really cool part is, Nordstrom is price matching AND they are running Triple Points right now, so if you see something you love at TB that is also stocked at Nordstrom, you can get it at Nordstrom and get your Triple Points. Sweet, yes??? I’m trying to be good and not buy anything new. I’m pretty well set with shoes and handbags at the moment, but let me know if you splurge on something fun!!!

Anyway, I hope y’all have a great rest of the weekend!!!

  1. It’s 6:34 am in South Louisiana and I’m at Lake ck my e-mails. This outfit is sooo darn cute on you. Love colors. Those boots are gorgeous. Wish I could swing the look but too old at 62. My girls would look great in them. Thx for sharing. Enjoy your week end. B

  2. Love it❤️ . Really like the suede boots. Definitely a great outfit for fall. I myself, am headed south at the end of the week. My family owns a farm in West Virginia. It’s always fun to take my kids there to spend a weekend in the fall. Clearly, it’s a different experience for them then living in a suburb in PA.

  3. LOL about whether people really wear these scarves or not. I think they are so cute but just not for me. I’m too large-chested and short-waisted to have that much fabric in my mid-section. Also it just never really gets all that cold here so I don’t really need the added warmth for the most part.

I started wearing monovision contacts a few years ago. My doctor said that some people never get used to them but one key is not starting off with much difference between the two eyes and gradually increasing the difference. I had been wearing the same in both eyes and we started with about a quarter or maybe a half different and now I’m wearing maybe a full point difference. He also said it helps to start when you’re younger. I was around your age when I started them and that’s what he considered “young”. 🙂 They also make multi-focal lenses right? Maybe those would work better? Hope you get it resolved! I hate when my eyes are bothering me and wearing my glasses full-time gives me a headache.

  4. What a great tip on cutting the blanket scarf in half! I’ve tried them before, but I have enough bust volume on my own, when I add a big scarf on top of that I alway feel huge! With only half the fabric it might work! Thank so much!

  5. I absolutely love this look. I have that scarf too, and was I was wondering why it didn’t look so bulky on you when I saw your pics! I have several very large scarves, but this one takes the cake. It’s huge! It looks perfect like this, so I may suck it up and cut mine also. Did you have to do anything to the edge you cut?
I also have those jeans you linked, and they are a favorite. You can wear them forever and they won’t stretch out one bit (although they stretch to conform to your body). Fabulous quality for sure. I think I got mine on a super sale at Macy’s last winter.

  6. What a great fall look your’re sporting! I love the colors. I don’t have a blanket scarf, I think for my height & build, it would overwhelm me. But, I do have a few regular scarves that are a bit fuller. I like the look, it’s just the fluffing & puffing I have to do when it get out of the car (from a seatbelt) that annoys me! But that’s only with my fuller scarves! I just love the “kerfuffle” word, I first heard it from Judge Judy. I’ve very familiar with the kerfuffle you speak of. I’m 61 & bought my first pair of contacts when an was 14. No issues until I hit my 50’s and started needing that wee bit of bifocal. From there, it just seemed to go downhill. Over the years I’ve tried a few different contact combos, but trying to get used to them drove me nuts. I have ended up wearing my glasses exclusively. At my last eye exam, the guy I go to ordered me a bunch of samples, instead of buying new contacts. I wear them for special occasions but that’s about it. Still hate my glasses…..but it is what it is.

  7. I am also loling about if the blanket scarf is for pinterest only! But it actually did get me thinking about. Where I live winter mornings are pretty chilly (in the teens), but often by the afternoon it’s sunny and 50. The high/low extremes are sort of tricky. I’m wondering if a blanket scarf combined with a nice sweater or cardigan might be warm enough for the morning commute to work and then won’t have to mess with a bulky coat on the way home. Hmmmm.

You look amazing as always. I really like the slight fading on the front of the denim, it’s very slimming. And I think you look great in glasses!

  8. Jo.lynne-I tried monovision contacts and couldn’t adjust. Always felt I was looking out of one eye. I also tried the multi focus contacts and I could see up close great but felt my distance vision suffered and I don’t appreciate that when you’re driving and trying to read signs. So, I still wear contacts for distance and put reading glasses on when I need to see up close. Now that I’m getting older (uh hum), I have the start of cataracts forming and my distance vision is getting better so there’s less of a need to put the readers on for that in between distance. It’s crazy I know. The joys of getting older.

    1. I need to invest in readers, I guess. I wonder how I would see the computer screen with the full strength contacts. I use my phone SO SO SO much, though, I just don’t think I could deal with needing readers.

  9. Love your fall outfit and just your style in general. On the contacts– I wore the mutifolcal lenses (air optix) for a year and loved them– but I just ordered a new supply and they are so uncomfortable. They irritated my eyes so badly that I got an infection from them– now I’m wearing glasses until it heals. Glasses aren’t my favorite– give me a headache! Hope you can find something that works for you — the glasses are cute on you !

      1. I’m dealing with the same issue…….glasses or no glasses, monovision or multifocal, etc., etc. If I looked as cute as you do in glasses, I might not try so hard with the whole contact thing! What brand and style are your glasses??

  10. I love the scarf! Last year I bought several, and because of the bulk, ended up using them for wraps, instead. This year, I will definitely be cutting some of mine in half! I have worn multi focal lenses for years, and love them. With this type of lens, My Dr. told me I needed to make a choice between seeing more acutely up close or far way–I chose to see clearer far away, (better for driving) and use readers if I need to see close up–which really isn’t often, as I CAN read mighty small print with the lenses in–dim lighting is what makes it harder to read these days! The joy of it all!????

  11. I love this look including the blanket scarf. I have a couple that I wear when running errands or to fall football games. I cut mine in half also and gave the extra half to my daughter. She won’t wear it much in Texas but she’ll have one if she wants it. I am right there with you on the contact issue! I’ve tried mono vision, multi focal and bifocal contacts and couldn’t get used to any of them, sigh… So now it’s progressive glasses for me. At least I can see with them!

  12. I cut my blanket scarves last year and haven’t looked back! So much nicer with less bulk. I LOVE your glasses! I do mono vision and it took me a year to adjust! At six months I started to get it then another six to forget it and it happened. My eye dr kept reinforcing to me to just keep at it and he was right. I have loved it. I tend to use readers and no contact at home on days off then I tried the mono vision in one eye of glasses and that worked. Now I’m just plain lazy and tend to wear the glasses all the time. I’m not a fan of eye makeup and find I can put on liner and go with it if I have glasses to hide behind. My problem is they keep steering me to these awful small glasses. I want something fun and cute! I try a bunch on and get frustrated then go back to boring. Love your glasses!

    1. One of my biggest issues with the glasses is, I can’t see to put my makeup on!!! Otherwise, I’d wear them more often. Right now I prefer my regular lenses, the old script. Neither my distance or close-up is crystal clear, but both are pretty good for now. With the new monovision, the computer and my phone are both blurry, but distance is great. I’d rather have the computer and phone be clear tho. SO annoying.

      1. My mom always has a pair of those goofy readers that you can flip one side down to put on makeup then she would put her regular glasses on for the day! I remember laughing at them as a child…I get it now! Keep trying mono vision! Maybe it needs a little adjustment. My brain was slow to catch on but once it do I was good! I see your glasses came from LensCrafters. I may try them. My eye dr selection is limited and they push to get them there. I really want some cute fun ones!

  13. Hands down, one of my favorites of all your outfits – absolutely LOVE it and think you look adorable!!! Sooooo can’t wait for cooler weather here in Texas so I can duplicate this look!!

  14. You look great as always! Best of luck with the contact issue. I had been wearing the mono vision contacts and have never felt my vision was as clear or sharp as it should be. In July I developed some crazy eye allergy issue that none of my physicians can seem to help with and I’ve had to wear my glasses every day since–SO annoying! I’m undergoing allergy testing this week so hopefully I can get some help and actually wear my lenses. Eyeliner application has been rather tricky each morning!

  15. First off, you look so cute in your glasses! Next, I love the outfit; the colors are pretty and perfect for fall. Fall clothes look great on you.
Good idea to trim down the scarf, but honestly it still looks too bulky. I’ve tried on several in the stores and they just swallow me up (and I’m a tall girl – 5’9) Although I love the look of a scarf ….going to try and find a lighter weight plaid one for myself.
    Have a great Saturday!

  16. Hi Jo-Lynne! Love your blog! I have to wear progressive lense glasses also…Hated wearing them all the time so I tried contacts about 4 years ago. I too needed mono-vision. I will say it took me quite a while to adjust to them ( and I tried multiple brands!!!)…I had a field of blurriness in the center of my line of vision ( if that makes sense). Last year I switched to Bio True one day contacts. I love them!! I wear a +3.25 in my right eye for up close and a +1.75 in my left eye for distance. They are by far the most comfortable I have ever worn! You make want to give them a try;)

  17. Great idea to cut blanket scarf. I have never been able to use mine because it’s so big. It took me a little time to get used to my monovision contacts. But so worth it to hang in there and get used to them.

  18. The outfit is cute. I have a 8X magnifying mirror that I picked up at Walmart. It is round with suction cups on the back…you just place it on your mirror and put your makeup It’s great!!!

    1. I have a magnifying mirror too but I think the magnification is too much or something. I have to get so close to see in focus that I don’t have room to apply makeup. I just use the other side, the regular view, with the light on sometimes.

  19. I love this outfit, the colors and glasses are great! And oh my gosh, cutting a blanket scarf… I have never, ever heard this and it is GENIUS! Thank you for mentioning it. I have 2 of these gorgeous, jumbo-size ASOS ones and they’ve never seen outside of my bedroom because I could never get them quite right. I am cutting them today! So, if I fold diagonal and cut along the fold, I end up with a triangle shape, no?
