Breaking Up Is So Hard To Do

Fifteen years ago, I brought you home with me, and we began our journey together.  This was not your first home, but I gladly welcomed you into our family.

Our relationship has had its ups and downs, but for the most part, we’ve been content with our respective roles.  Of course, there were the times when you spewed mashed potatoes or flour all over my counters, but it wasn’t your fault.  I expected too much of you.  And I know that I’ve worked you hard over the past few months with all of my bread making, but you’ve performed admirably.

The thing is, you are rather small, and I’m not sure you’re up to the task.  So I need to tell you that I have found a replacement, and it’s time for you to retire.  You probably knew this was coming, but I’m sure that doesn’t make it any easier.

You will like your new home in the basement with the other rarely used appliances to keep you company.  I promise to write.  And visit occasionally.  And I may need your services if your replacement should ever need a tune up.

But for now, you’ll need to clear out your living quarters.  Because there’s a new girl in town.

Today she made four loaves of bread at once.  It was quite impressive, I must say.  And you should see the double batch of granola she can churn out.  I’m eagerly awaiting the day I make mashed potatoes for a crowd, and I don’t have white stuff spewing all over the kitchen.

It is with regret that I bid you a fond farewell, but it’s time.  Never forget the good times.  I know I won’t.

*Yes, I’m spoiled.  The new mixer was my Christmas gift for my mom.  Thanks Mom!!

  1. Ok, this is the craziest coincidence…. but I believe my mom’s old KitchenAid is about 15 years old as well… I believe it was purchased for Christmas in 1994.

Around Christmas it started making some ominous noise and I was going to call the repairs plant in OH to see if I can get it serviced… but I’m not sure if there’s any hope… but my family refuses to buy a new one and I won’t buy one until I get my own house… so I’m crossing my fingers it doesn’t die… even though she’s had a verry long life.

Love your new mixer – she’s beautiful!!

  2. I love my Kitchen Aid mixer!!! But mine’s only 2 years old so I have a lot of time left with it!
But I did have to say farewell to my hand blender that it replaced! LOL.
    Hugs
    Kim

  3. I have the same mixer and it was also a gift from my mom! It’s amazing! Couldn’t go to anything else…well, unless it’s bigger 😉

PS: I’m going to Blissdom and hope to meet you there!

  4. I LOVE my KitchenAid. Hubs got me a commercial one 3 years ago, and it has been a Godsend ever since. It handles my homemade icing with ease.
There is nothing but good times ahead for you and your new addition!

  5. *drool* I don’t even HAVE a mixer. But then again I don’t make 4 loaves of bread at once. Or mashed potatoes for a crowd. 🙂

  6. Jealous. But happy for you. I have one that looks pretty much like your old one, and guess what!–I made three loaves of bread with it today. But the dough tends to spew up and over the top of the hook. I’d LOVE a new one.

Hey, I know! Why don’t you get the Kitchen Aid people to give some away on your blog like they do on Pioneer Woman’s blog? *tee hee!*

  7. What a magnificent machine. I LOVE my Kitchen Aid mixer. I do not know what I would do without her.

I must say that I’m surprised your girl lasted as long as she did. That is quite impressive!

You’ll have to take her out on occasion… holidays especially. 🙂

  8. Wooohoooo! YAY for you! I received a PINK kitchenaid mixer a few years back after a rather obnoxious early december cookie and candy making saturday that resulted in lots of vulgar language after i burned up several mixers! Moms rock!!

  9. So funny- I have had a mixer like you had for almost 15 year (this July). Those new Kitchen Aid mixers sure look nice…
Your mom sure knows how to treat you special.

  10. You do what with that thing? Oh, so that’s what a kitchen looks like. Nah, still don’t have a desire to cook 😀

Congrats on your new mixer and totally love the farewell letter to your old one!

  11. I have that exact same mixer and I love it! I got it for Christmas a few years ago when I was taking cake decorating class and I burned up my hand mixer try to make royal icing…. She will be the best workhorse in your kitchen!!

  12. I’ve got the same mixer you just dumped. A wedding gift (just passed 14 years!). I don’t see a new kitchen aid in my future, so it looks like I’ll remain in a committed relationship with the mixer of my youth. 🙂

p.s. I’m drooling just a teensy bit over that shiny new appliance of yours!

  13. Love, love, love your new mixer (and your old one for that matter). I have a the basic kitchen aid model and love it.

Question………..granola in the mixer? how do you do it? and I’m sure you’ve posted on it before, but what bread recipe do you use? Is it better than using a bread machine?

    Inquiring mind wants to know!

    Congrats on the mixer!

  14. That shiny new mixer looks amazing and I’m a huge fan of the splatter shield. Perfect for your new kitchen 🙂

What’s the model? I’d love to add it to my bridal registry – and what parts do you recommend?

  15. Oooh. I want one of those. *__*

Too bad I’m a poor college student. 🙁

Perhaps I can put one on my wedding registry someday? One can hope, I suppose.

  16. I love the new mixer! I actually have the same one as your old one. I’m not sure exactly how old it is, just that it is 15+ years old. I inherited it about 8 years ago and the poor thing is on it’s last legs. I’m just hoping that it will hold out for a little while longer so that I can afford to replace it as soon as it quits. I’m not sure that I can even imagine life without a Kitchen Aid! Congratulations!

  17. Kitchenaid mixers rock! My mom gave us ours as a Christmas gift our first Christmas we were married. It was a couple gift, one my husband wasn’t too thrilled with but it’s been one that’s lasted!

  18. It’s a beauty!!! And it looks lovely on your new countertops.

My Kitchenaid is one of three appliances allowed to live on my counters and it is by far the star. She is red and I love her. However, this Christmas she did start making a squeaking noise that I have yet to research.

The one you retired – was it a Kitchenaid, too – just a different model? It looks more like mine then this new one you have. Is the new one commercial?

BTW, older ones can be refurbished (I think I heard that here).

  19. Janel, yes, it’s the Professional Series. And it’s also a 6 quart as opposed to a 4.5 quart, so it makes twice as much bread and granola. LOVE THAT!
