Bunco!

Do you play Bunco?  Are you saying, "What the heck is Bunco?"  If you’re one of the last three people on earth to hear about Bunco, I’ll tell you that Bunco is basically our generation’s version of Bridge.  It’s really just an excuse to get together and socialize.  And eat.  And drink, if you’re one to imbibe.  Except instead of playing cards, you’re rolling dice.  The game itself is simple, but it’s pretty ingenious the way it gets everyone moving around the room so that by the end of the night you have had a chance to visit with everyone.  And it’s always more fun after a glass of wine.  Or three.

Bunco in our neighborhood has had a rather rocky existence.  See, you HAVE to have 12 to play.  16 is better.  (There are tables of 4.)  So if you don’t get enough people to play, the night’s a flop.  We have had as many as 18 sign up some months and as few as 9 other months.  The most successful Bunco groups are the ones who have 12 committed people that play every month.  But for some reason, we can’t seem to find our faithful 12 in my neighborhood.

Tonight is Bunco night, and I’m hoping I’m well enough to attend.  We’re struggling to get our 12, but I roped a friend into coming over from her neighborhood, so I think we might have a Bunco game!

If you like to Bunco, you might be interested in this.  On March 7-9th, Prilosec OTC is sponsoring the third annual Bunco Championship
at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.  Naomi Judd, along with over 2,000 Bunco
loving women, will be on site to crown the next Prilosec OTC Bunco Champion.
You can sign up for this year’s championship at the site below.

The Web site features a few tips from Naomi Judd on how to host your own
“girl’s-night-in” Bunco Party.

Prilosec OTC has also teamed up with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation
to raise money for breast cancer through a Charity Challenge. Players can
register online at Buncocentral.com, and the group that raises the most
cash will win a trip to Vegas to compete in the Prilosec OTC Bunco Championship
and meet with country singer Naomi Judd.

Now I ask you.  Where else but Las Vegas can you find Naomi Judd, Bunco, and Prilosec OTC teaming up together to fight breast cancer?  Only in America, folks.  Only in America.

  1. Bunco. My absolute social salvation in my new home. Without it, I’d be a friendless, miserable hermit living on the fuzzy outer edge of polite society. It’s how I met and got to know the troop of fantastic neighborhood SAHMs I consider my best pals, it’s how I found how where to grocery shop, who to have cut my hair, and when/where to put my Christmas lights. Seriously. Bunco is pretty much where it’s all plugged in, around here.

  2. I’ve been playing with basically the same group of ladies for 6 years – LOVE IT! We have a long list of subs just dying to come play with us! When we first started I only new a few of the ladies – now I consider them my best friends. We often socialize outside of Bunko. The neatest thing is when we do get together once a month, we immediately catch up on each other’s lives. It is a wonderful support group.

PS – We did have one member head out to Las Vegas one year and Atlantic City one year to play in the Prilosec tournament!

  3. DLH – Oh, that’s a new page! I meant to create a page, but I created a post. Then I quickly deleted it and made the page. So people with a feed reader might be picking it up still.

It’s on my sidebar under Pages — Fashion and Beauty Blogs. I just wanted to separate those from my main blogroll so they’re easy to find.

  4. fancythis – That’s how my sil’s Bunco group operates. (She’s Suzy — she left a comment above.) I wish we had a group that was that into it too. Sigh…

  5. I subbed once for my MIL’s bunco group. Woowee! Those ladies sure did imbibe! Good thing a few of them lived close enough to walk.

I’d like to have a bunco group of ladies my age (not my MIL’s age!), but right now, with a nursing baby, I don’t see that kind of activity in my schedule.

  6. My MIL’s family gets together to play Bunco around Christmas. So, I have played and I do find it enjoyable. I hope your group gets to play.

  7. Bunco sounds fun. I keep trying to read your previous post, fashion and beauty but it isn’t there. Uh, oh, I hear the garage door opening, C is home so I better go and pretend to be doing something productive when he walks in…

  8. I love Bunco! We actually call it Bongo, but same difference. My Aunt is part of a committed 12 group, so I only get to play when one of them backs out. It’s neat how they have it organized though…
Since their are 12 members and 12 months, a different woman hosts it at their house every month. They all try to “theme” the night by what time of year it is.
I only wish there were enought women in “my crew” to be able to do the same thing!

  9. I love Bunco and I love getting out once a month to socialize with all of my neighbors–especially in the winter when everyone seems to go into hibernation. Have fun!

  10. I bought a bunco game because my SIL talks about how much fun she has doing it. What I didn’t realize though is how many people you needed to play.

    Hope you have fun.

  11. You know, I’d never even heard of Bunco until I moved out here near my daughter. She plays with two different groups and I sub for them. When a regular can’t make it, they call me. It’s the MOST fun. We play with 12 and if we absolutely can’t get 12 together, we play with “ghosts.” Do y’all play for money? Everyone puts in $10 and then the top three winners get a little extra shopping money. Fun, fun!

  12. A group of ladies from church just got a Bunco group going, so I got to play Thursday night. You are right–it’s the BEST when every chair is full, we had one “ghost”. 🙁 I did not know Naomi Judd was a BQ (Bunco Queen). I’m just picturing the winners in Vegas, first Bunco…then craps, roullette, 21, a smoke filled back room with high stakes poker with several guys names Al…it’s a slippery slope. 🙂

  13. We had a great BUNCO group, but after about a year, it fizzled out. I’d love to get one going again. Wish I lived closer, I’d come to yours!

  14. Oh how I miss my Bunco group. We disbanded after a few years due to everyone getting too busy. It’s so much fun! My husband always calls it Drunko. We didn’t really get drunk but the wine definitely flowed freely!!

  15. Hi, I am going to play Bunco for the first time in Vegas and very excited!! Are many of you going to this event or have a team for the charity challenge. Looks like the challenge is not raising the money like last year, too bad. We need to cure this cancer!!
