Caramel Cable Knit Poncho

Hi friends! I’m back with Day 19 of our 27 Days of Spring Fashion, and today’s outfit is a bit of a different color palette for me. I’m curious to hear what you think.

Caramel Cable Knit Poncho $49 // similar black skinnies $178 (or try these Wit & Wisdom $64)

similar leopard pumps $129

When I saw this Cable Knit Poncho on the White House Black Market website, it was love at first sight. I love the mix of textures, the boat neckline, and the relaxed styling. I ordered it on a 30% off sale, but it is currently marked down to $49, which is 50% off the original retail price.

It would look amazing with white jeans or blue jeans, but for this outfit, I paired it with my black skinny jeans and added leopard pumps to bring both colors together.

I said I wasn’t sure I loved the color palette. I do love the caramel and black together. I’m just not sure the caramel color is great with my skintone. I tried to add the blingy gold earrings to bring some brightness to my face.

The top is see-through in certain areas, and the armholes are rather deep, so I wore a nude colored cami underneath. You could also wear black, if you wanted it to look more intentional. I’ll probably try that so people don’t think they’re seeing my skin. I’m modest in that way, but it’s totally find to get a peek of nude cami here and there.

I love and adore these leopard heels. I picked them up on a clearance sale, so I got them for a steal. If you’re looking for something similar, THESE by Chinese Laundry are a great substitute. My black jeans were also a clearance item. They’re the DL1961 Amanda, but the Florence in the Riker wash would be similar.

  1. I think the top is stunning, in fact I love the whole outfit. On the downside, I’m not sure about the oversize arm holes…….wouldn’t like to see my cami Underneath. I do like the color on you! It’s something different and between the jewelry & lipstick, it does brighten it up. All the detail on that top is beautiful, I think you could wear it for a nice dinner out or your casual church. Bottom line, stunning outfit on you & I’m jealous!

  2. I love the style and detail of the top. However, it is not a color that everyone can wear. I personally avoid it at all costs.I would try a scarf at the neckline to bring a different color against your complexion. I follow you daily and know that when a top has interesting detail, like this one, you try to not over-accessorize. Yet, just a simple black scarf or necklace would help.

    I love your blog!

  3. I’m thinking a colorful scarf would add interest and be flattering. And I find I always end up returning anything with armholes too big (or necklines too revealing).

  4. I think the color combo is fantastic…especially with the leopard heels—I think they tie it all together!
It’s hard to tell if the color is great against your complexion, but even if it’s not….it’s such a wonderful piece, that you’ll still be looking good!! I think you could even wear a colored cami or tank top under it and let a little color show through the holes!! Nice shopping!! jodie

  5. I love this sweater-poncho, and I think it’s lovely on you. Camel is such a classic, and classy color, IMO. I would love to see this with white jeans (and maybe the Kate Spade crossbody). But it’s great the way you’ve styled it.

  6. I really like how you pulled the outfit together, especially the shoes, and I love all the detail on the top. I have similar coloring as you, and I try to stay away from tans and beiges, etc ose to my face. They make me look washed out. On you this makes you face blend in with the shirt a little. I think a chunky black necklace or even a different color (matching a purse?) might help break it up and give your face some definition. I like the idea of wearing a black tank or cam underneath to seem intentional.

  7. I like it! Probably not your “go to” color, but it looks nice (doesn’t wash you out). I find the palette a little “fall-ish.” For spring, I think I would have paired it with white jeans and definitely the leopard pumps. With that in mind, a bright cami might work, like a bold pink or bright blue. Just thinking…..

    Anyway, you’re adorable every day!

  8. I love the outfit, but definitely think a bright cami or statement necklace would bring some color “up” towards your face.

  9. I like the outfit Jo-Lynne, but I don’t think the colour camel is that great on you. I think with white jeans it might work better, as they would add some brightness. I love camel, it’s so elegant and versatile, but it doesn’t suit me. It’s a difficult colour I think, as it’s so close to many people’s complexions.
I think if you swapped the top for an olive colour, it would look great on you!
I love that you show outfits you’re a bit unsure about. It’s good to know that no one gets it right all the time! Just most of the time, LOL

    1. I do think it would look great with white jeans. I was trying not to style everything with white jeans this spring, haha! And yeah, I have lots of misses. I just don’t always share them. 😉

  10. We’ll just call you Super Woman this morning, ha! I only have one son, but how I remember those days!
I love the details of your sweater, and I really like the color with black jeans, too. The leopard pumps look fabulous and completes your look!

I’m also saddened by the news this morning from Brussels. This must be retaliation from the recent arrest of the mastermind behind the Paris attacks. Sending prayers to all the families who lost loved ones. I can’t even imagine.

  11. I guess I’m in the minority on this one. I just don’t care for this sweater at all. The color issues could be overcome (scarf, jewelry, etc) but it’s the fit that I don’t think is great. I think it’s too boxy and that fact is really accentuated by the way it stands out at the shoulders. I’m also unsure about the weight of the sweater? It seems heavier than a typical spring/summer sweater to me but the fact that it’s sleeveless seems contradictory. I almost see it more as a true poncho to be worn looser and over another shirt with longer sleeves like a long sleeve t-shirt or a turtleneck.

Sorry to be such a downer! I just don’t think this is a keeper. You have such a great figure and great wardrobe. I think you’ve got so many better options that are more flattering. I do appreciate and admire your willingness to try a big variety of clothing options. It certainly helps me figure out what I should buy for myself! 🙂

    1. Agreed. First glance the color doesn’t do you justice. A scarf might help, but with so many other options this isn’t one. Please don’t be offended. Love the jeans and pumps! Love your blog I just found you!

  12. I LOVE neutrals, so i think its a great look!!! I bought a similar sweater and don’t like the arm holes too much on me!! I am large busted with small arms, so it is more of a “body” problem!! LOL!!! I think you look great and I wouldn’t add a scarf at all. I think it may be too much going on if you did!!! But i may add a long necklace. Lovely as always!!!!

  13. The sweater is beautifully made. I don’t think the color compliments your skin tone, but as some of the other ladies have said, adding a colorful scarf would do the trick. I’m so dang fair, I need to steer away from that color.

    God bless! Praying for Brussels!

  14. It wasn’t until following fashion more closely last year and learning to pay more attention to size, fit, color, that I realized the camel sweater that I’d always adored really didn’t do me any favors. I did wear it once this year with leopard flats, and although I loved the combo, I didn’t love it on me. That being said, this is a beautiful outfit, but you seem to get lost in it. You always have a stunning and glowing complexion that always stands out, but it seems to kind of just blend with this top. I’m not always good at articulating my thoughts, hope this made sense, lol. It’s a fantastic outfit though, really love the combo!

  15. I like the sweater but it is not your best color and I think the arm holes are unflattering for your cute figure. You’ve mentioned that you are “well-endowed” but I think this top just draws attention to that and makes you look chunky in your top half. I’m so sorry to leave a negative comment but you are always spot on with your style. This one just misses the mark this time.

    1. I hear ya, Suzanne. I know exactly what you mean. 🙂 I appreciate your candor. It bothered me when I edited the pictures, so I tried to choose the ones where that issue wasn’t as noticeable, but that doesn’t change the fact that the issue exists. Ha! I do think I can do better, so this one will probably go back.

  16. I think I have similar coloring to yours, and I try for a brighter lip color when wearing something that mirrors my skin tone, and perhaps go for less rosy but more coral tones. (For example, I’d suggest a brownish orange/burnt siena type lip color.) Also, why no long pendant on this sweater? It would change the focus of the neckline… or a statement necklace? I really like the black jeans and the leopard shoes with it–the caramel color is mirrored and feels intentional! I like this one–I think you just need to modify your makeup a bit.

    1. I like the idea of a coral lip. I tend to stay away from necklaces when there’s a lot going on in the sweater, but the right one could add a lot to this outfit. I just don’t think I have the right one, so I went without. 🙂 I wonder if I’d bought it in the store, rather than ordering online, what they would have suggested. They do a good job with accessories.

  17. A very classic, polished look. Put on a little red lipstick and shazam! I love everything about this outfit and it’s perfect for your upcoming fashion blogger conference. They got nothing on you!!

    1. I like the idea of a bright lip. I often forget to change up my lipstick for different outfits. 🙂 I love a nude lip right now, but sometimes an outfit calls for something brighter.

  18. I think you hit it out of the park with this outfit! I love it and it really looks good on you. I think it’s perfect with your skin tone – it makes it look very smooth and creamy. I also think your hair color brings up the black pants so it’s not blah. I think it would be different if you hand light hair color and I wouldn’t like it as much. Excellent outfit on you!!!

  19. I have to agree with many ladies—the combination, in theory, is great. And, as many said, it’s probably not your best look but for goodness sake you don’t look awful!! The part of the outfit that I have the most trouble with is that I feel like a poncho isn’t meant to be worn alone. If I saw someone wearing just a poncho without a shirt with sleeves under it I would wonder what they were thinking. In my neck of the woods that sort of look gets a lot of strange looks from people. Maybe we’re just behind the times. 🙂

  20. Really cute outfit and I love the jeans and heels! I can’t wear that color either,it just does nothing positive for me and it is so basic that it is hard to avoid it but I try. I love a kind of golden brown with black and I find if the top has black in it it looks better but I have tried to banish it from my closet otherwise.

  21. I am with Denise and Jennifer. I don’t care for the top at all. Looks incomplete…can’t put my finger on it. Maybe it looks too heavy to be sleeveless for warm weather. I could see it with a fitted long sleeve tee. The color goes great with pants and heels. I do like the length of the sweater for you.

  22. Love this outfit ! You look great in caramel! Nice outfit for date night or maybe even to work my office is causal but i cant wear blue jeans. So the black works

  23. I don’t love this. The sweater is not the best color, and I feel like you need a long sleeve underneath the poncho.

  24. I like the shape of the top and the detailing but don’t think it’s your best color. I think it needs a scarf or statement necklace (though I know you tend to avoid those). The outfit as a whole is a winner though.

  25. I like this outfit on you, JoLynne. I have a fair complexion too. The picture of the poncho on the WHBM site, looks a bit more gold. I have trouble wearing beige too.
You look elegant in this outfit. But, I agree, the top might look better with a more colorful lip, or with a necklace. That being said, you look stunning.
My heart is so heavy from the latest terrorist attack.
Thank you for brightening my day.

  26. I agree with some of your other followers, this is not the best color for you. It is a hard color for very many people to wear. But like a few other said, if you paired it with a bright scarf or a bright chunky, statement necklace, I think it would be perfect. Also, a nice piece to layer over a button up or long sleeve tee before the weather gets real warm. Love the shoes! Great color combination.

  27. Thanks so much for your grace in accepting these comments! We all have outfits that should work, but for some reason, just don’t quite get there. I love that you put yourself out there and try the new trenss, so we can see them on you and extrapolate whether they had a chance of looking good on us. I also find it so helpful when a blogger is willing to purposely post an outfit that doesn’t work, and analyze why. Susan Street used to do this on the fifty not frumpy blog but has stopped, and I miss it.

    1. Thanks, Pat. Sometimes I go to edit my pictures and I realize it didn’t quite come together, but I don’t want to waste them so I post them anyway. Haha! I’m glad it’s helpful. 🙂

  28. I’m not a big fan of the coloring of the top-for me or you. I think it possibly looks more like a fall outfit than a spring?
