C’s Cookin’ Show

My 6-year-old daughter loves to “cook,” and I’m a control freak.  It’s not exactly a winning combination.  So when my mom asked what she could get C for Christmas, I suggested the Easy Bake Oven.

I made this suggestion with a bit of hesitation because I tend to be one of those moms who figures it’s easier to do the real thing than to buy contrived toys that mimic the real thing but generally don’t perform very well.  And then if that’s not enough, they take up extra living space when they’re not in use.  It just seems like a waste.  But I had a feeling that C would really love the Easy Bake Oven if she discovered it, and I had no other brilliant inspiration for a gift.  So on Christmas morning, an Easy Bake Oven sat unwrapped under the tree from “Santa” even though my daughter informed me in her most condescending tone that she KNOWS that the gifts come from us and not from Santa “because reindeer can’t fly.  That’s just silly.”

Alrighty then.

When I explained to her that the Easy Bake Oven is her very own oven and assured her that she can “do the cookin’ ” all by herself, she was delighted and asked us approximately 78 times a day when she could use her new oven.  Finally last week we managed to get the proper light bulb, and I set up her oven and set out all the supplies to make the little cake that comes in the starter kit.  The cake is approximately the size of a large cookie, but she was thrilled because I let her do everything herself.  I almost broke out in hives watching and not interfering, but I was determined to let her do her own thing.  The cake that emerged from the Easy Bake Oven looked about like you would expect something to look that had just been cooked by a 100-watt lightbulb, but she enjoyed it nonetheless.

The next day, she had barely hopped out of bed when she was asking to make cookies in her oven.  So I took a deep breath and contemplated a Xanax (just kidding, Mom!!) and then remembered my New Years Resolution to say yes more AND to smile more, so I pasted a stiff smile on my face and chirped cheerfully, “Sure!”

So after breakfast was cleaned up, we set out to make the cookies that come with the kit, and just as we were starting to lay out our supplies, C was struck by a sudden inspiration.  “Let’s make a cookin’ show!”  So that is exactly what she did.  You will notice that she has watched me make several vlogs when you see how she starts out her “cookin’ show.”  And you can thank my husband for his editing skilz.  Without them, you’d be watching 5 minutes of footage instead of 2.

And without further ado, I give you, C’s Cookin’ Show!

  1. I used to LOVE my easy bake oven… so much so that co-workers bought me one as a gag gift for Christmas a couple of years ago!!!

PS.. I resoluted to say yes more often as well.. it is hard to break that habit of NO right?

  2. How cute! Better not let my daughter see this. She loves to cook and Santa brought her an Easy-Bake Oven as well. I’ll never get her out of the kitchen or away from the Flip otherwise…

  3. The stuff my daughter cooked in her EBO was hardly edible! You guys did much better! I need to send you a picture of the pretzel she made. Oh my word it looks like I pulled it out of the toilet. GAG.

  4. I am so glad she’ll be going to college knowing how to bake…its awful going without even knowing how to boil water.

Isaac loved watching her bake. We can’t wait to see her on the food network. She’s way better than Rachel Ray.

  5. Susan, I can’t say what we made was edible to anyone but the cook herself. But she had fun. That’s what counts, right?

Oh yeah, and my kitchen’s still clean.

  6. Great Job Caroline!!!
I always wanted an easy-bake oven.

I am quite the control freak myself Jo-Lynne and both of my boys LOVE to cook (my youngest more than my oldest though). My control freak remedy? Stay out of the kitchen! I’m always close by if they have questions, but if I’m not watching, then I don’t have as strong of a temptation to tell them how much they should be doing it MY way! Of course Caroline’s a bit young to go it alone, but maybe my remedy will help you out in the future.

    Hugs…Anita

  7. So fun! Good job, Caroline! Next – use small, cheap biscuits and make a little pizza. I loved my pink easy bake and when the boys were little I got them a version of this – it was a slime machine – very bright green and they made gummy worms, etc. Boys version. 😉

    Fun video!

  8. You are a better mom than me…no easy bakes here…and cooking with my children (though I do it often) is not all smiles!!! I too am a total control freak and though I TRY, I swear I try…I can’t let go.

  9. Oh how cute! Did I tell you that *I* got an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas? I did. I waited 31 years for one and I finally have one. Except he forgot to get a light bulb to go in it and now I have a light bulb but no time to play with it. And Grace keeps asking me (along with Samara) when we’re going to get to play with the big microwave.

Matthew likes to cook too. Typically I let him with supervision. He used to cook once a week and just asked if he could start doing it again.

  10. This is too cute! I am not showing my little Princess or she will be begging for one so she can do a cooking show! She is a Rachael Ray FREAK and loves to put on shows in her kitchen…if she knew she could do it for real….UGH!

I, myself am very similar with the need to smile more and relax, I am trting! Noy because I am a control freak, but my husband is and VERY OCD (or as he likes to say CDO because it is alphabetical) and I have found myself saying no too often to keep peace! I am proud of you for letting go, she will have great memories one day!

  11. Caroline can oficially guest vlog for you! Easy Bake Ovens can provide hours of fun projects! I recently threw away my 25 year old Easy Bake. I figured I could just buy my girl the newer model.

  12. Cute! My girls used to do shows too. Nothing that they would ever put on the web. Didn’t exist then. I had an Easy Bake as a girl. It was a pastel blue. Do you remember the older style? I think my daughters’ was white and not quite as mod as what’s above. Anyway, fun stuff.
