Well, it’s here! 25 Days of Winter Fashion starts NOW and today I have a casual camel coat outfit.
I’ve been trying to update my winter coats over the past couple of years. I used to wear one main coat all winter long — a long, gunmetal grey puffy coat with a fur hood. I wore it for casual and for dress-up and everything in between. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, in fact, it’s probably admirable, but a coat can be a fun accessory, and it’s nice to have some variety for different occasions.
A long wool coat in a great neutral like black, camel, or grey, is a classic that you can wear for many years. I had a black one many moons ago, so this time I decided to go for something different. I chose camel.
Nordstrom is a great place to shop for coats because they have a huge variety. I actually purchased this wool blend Reefer Coat during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale last summer. I love the classic lines and simple silhouette. It also comes in grey and black.
It says that it is narrow in the shoulders and to size up if you’re in between sizes, but I ordered my usual size 8, and I felt like it was huge. I ended up going back for the 6 a few weeks ago, and it has plenty of room, so I am going to tell you it is true to size or runs even a tad large. It also comes in Petite sizes. As always, shipping is free both ways at Nordstrom, so if you want to order this coat and you’re unsure of the size, you can order both and return the one that doesn’t fit.
The nice thing about this style of coat is that you can dress it up or down. It is perfectly appropriate over dresses for church, and it looks equally chic over jeans and a sweater, as I’m wearing it here.
These boots are from last year, but again, I’ll link to a few options below. I like having tall black leather boots when the weather gets dicey in the wintertime because you can wear them even if it’s slushy and mucky out, unlike suede, which is kind of fussy. Black Hunter rain boots would also be gorgeous with this outfit and are practical for winter weather. I wear mine all year round. If you’re worried about your feet being cold in the rain boots, wear thick wool socks inside.
I like how the plaid scarf finishes off the outfit and coordinates with the sweater I’m wearing. It also makes a pretty pop of color on top of the neutral coat.
I’m wearing a simple ribbed mock neck pullover from Nordstrom. For size reference, I’m wearing a small. I often wear a medium in sweaters, but this one seems to run a bit big, and I’m not a fan of sizing up for a more oversized look. That’s kind of trendy right now, and it works if you’re young and super skinny, but for those of us with curves, it’s more flattering to buy clothes that fit. 🙂
I like the trendy split step hem and interesting stitching details on the sides. If you like long tunic sweaters, this one has a nice slim silhouette, and it creates a nice palette for scarves and necklaces.
For an affordable pair of skinny jeans, you can’t go wrong with these Wit & Wisdom Ab-Solution Skinnies designed with Ab-solution power-mesh panels to slim and hold, including a waistband with interior control and booty-lift construction. They are super comfortable, and they look great on.
I also carried a black leather shoulder bag with gold hardware to coordinate with the boots. I love how chic and effortless a casual camel coat outfit is. I will definitely be wearing many variations of it this winter!

This post is brought to you by Nordstrom. Thank you for supporting the retailers that support this site.
One of my challenges for winter is work. It is cold outside, but once I get into work, it is super hot. So I am having trouble finding the happy medium.
This is very pretty. I would also love to see skirts on the post
I love this whole look! I especially love the coat but unfortunately it’s already sold out in my size. Boo! 🙁
So frustrating. Hopefully they’ll restock! 🙂 I also linked to a few similar at the end.
I’m sorry, I didn’t see the links to some similar camel coats?
They’re in the shopping widget with the pictures, but you may have to click the arrow to scroll to the right or left to get to them. I put a lot of links in there this time! 🙂 I will add them to the text links too.
I love everything about this outfit. I am loving the wine/burgundy color trend – just got a pair of pants in that color but have not worn them yet.
Love all the pieces!!! Thanks!
Love the boots! Are they comfortable? On my wish list. Also I appreciate the tips about the sweater size… may try and see if I can try it on this week in store. Great price.
Mine are quite comfortable, but I had to link to similar styles because mine are from last year. 🙂
I love following Jo-Lynne & Cyndi, great fashion advise & outfit ideas
Perfect outfit for the first day of winter. Love it!
Really loving this look! Can’t wait to see what else you have planned for the next 24 days!
Love the whole outfit!!!
Love the sweater color!
I definitely need layering help to stay warm. Either it’s warm outside and everyone has the AC blasting or it cools off a little and they blast the heat! I just can’t win!
Love the sweater and look – will be purchasing the sweater for sure!
Cute! Thanks for the chance to win!
I’m relatively new to your blog but I’m really enjoying how you put your outfits together. Some don’t apply to us in California (we have to do a rain dance to get any wetness from the sky!), but that’s ok. I appreciate the links to the different pieces as well. Looking forward to your 25 days of winter!
Thanks, Becky!!!
Thinking of pulling up old carpet and doing wood floors in great room and dining room too! Let’s see the finished product , if you don’t mind sharing!
I’ll definitely share a picture!
Looking forward to this series, I loved the 25 days of Fall!
A classic look with a lovely pop of color, awesome!
You look beautiful as always! Love the classic coat!
I love this coat and the shade of camel. It doesn’t look as yellow as some. My coloring doesn’t handle yellow tones of anything. So excited for these next 25 days from my favorite two bloggers!
Great outfit! I am really loving those boots!
New blog reader here! I’m definitely going to check out those Wit & Wisdom jeans…they sound like the perfect skinnies!
I usually prefer pricier premium denim, but I am really impressed by these at that price point!
I’m surprised how good the camel looks -I would have skipped over it for black with my darker hair but after seeing it on you would give it a chance. Looking forward to the next 24 days!
You know what? I actually ordered the black originally, back in July, and it sat in my closet for months. Then after re-watching Gilmore Girls this fall, and seeing how amazing Loreli looks in her classic camel reefer coat, I exchanged it for the camel. LOL!!! So yeah, I naturally gravitate to black as well, but I am loving camel right now — not just in coats, in sweaters too. 🙂
I have been looking for tunics. I really like the length and cut of this one!
Perfection! Looking forward to this new series.
Such a pretty outfit, JoLynne! I’m looking forward to the rest of this series. I look forward to each and every outfit you and Cyndi style. 🙂
Love your blog. Finding you on Pinterest and Instagram has inspired me to step up my fashion game this year.
Thanks, Jennifer. So glad to hear that!
Hi Jo-Lynne! Great outfit today. The camel colored wool coat is timeless and so versatile, like you’ve shown. My question for you is: Can a short gal wear over the knee boats without looking stumpy? And, what are some good choices for otk boots for vertically challenged gals like myself?
Thanks a bunch!
That one’s a hard one for me to answer since I am pretty average, and I think I take for granted that I can wear almost any height of boot. I will say that some OTK boots are higher than others. The ones like I’m wearing in this post barely come up over the knee, same with the ones Cyndi is wearing today. So I’d suggest sticking with those styles. When shopping online, most sites will list the height of the boot shaft, so you can compare that way and try to stick with ones that are lower. 20″ seems to be about the lowest that is still considered OTK. Some are 22″ and even 24″ tall. This pair that I linked to today is the shortest at 19 1/2″ – http://bit.ly/2eXkdBS.
As far as not looking stumpy, the best advice I have is to pair your boots with similar colored pants. Dresses don’t matter so much because you are pretty much breaking up your body into 2 equal portions without much in between. But with jeans and a sweater, you should try to keep the jeans and boots in the same tone (or close) to create a long, lean leg line. And then the sweater can contrast, or it can also be in the same tone if you want an all-over monochromatic look, which can make you appear taller.
I hope that helps!
I was going to ask about scarf styling, but I saw you answered above. That’s exactly my issue with wearing a scarf, it’s not for larger chested gals. I would love to see some Party wear for the holiday season. Love, love your blog. I always get so many awesome ideas from you!
I’ll definitely be featuring some holiday party attire! 🙂
I love this entire look. The black bag and boots really go great with the coat. Do you mind me asking how tall you are? Just wondering where the coat would hit on me. I like the length on you but I’m a tad over 5’7″…

Sure! I am 5’5″.
The scarf is beautiful and hope you continue to feature scarves. I’m somewhat flat-chested and actually run a size smaller on the top then the bottom. Scarves really help to balance me out so I wear them as often as I can.
One of your other readers mentioned a preference for wool over acrylic. I agree that wool hold up better and lasts longer, but as a post-menopausal women, I appreciate that acrylic is a little cooler. I also like the price point on the sweater. I like to look good, but we lead a very casual lifestyle and it s hard to justify spending a lot of money on my clothes.
One question: the sweater does look much more red on the website. Does is coordinate with the plaid infinity scarf that you featured a few weeks ago? I’m referring to the one that has camel, red and green tones. (Love that scarf!)
Yes, then scarves will definitely work well for you! So much depends on body type. Because I’m pretty evenly proportioned, I can get away with a lot of styles, so I do try to style a variety. I’ll definitely continue to feature scarves. 🙂 I also try to feature a wide variety of price points because I know not everyone has the same budget or prioritizes the same things.
I think this sweater would look great with that scarf. And yes, too funny that Cyndi styled it today!
I love scarfs but sometimes it’s very difficult for me to match I love how you put together your outfits.
Too funny! I just went to look at Cyndi’s post and she is wearing the exact scarf I am referring to!
I love a simple classic coat. I have one in black that I wear all the time whether dressed up or down. I think it’s time to switch to a camel one. Going back to check out the other links. That purse has my attention, too.
Can you do a post with short booties that have a low heel and are comfortable to wear for hours? Like you, I have some foot issues and need to baby my feet.
Yeah, most of my boots are pretty high, aren’t they? These are lower but they are $$$$ – still, if you are babying your feet, they might be worth the investment. https://www.jolynneshane.com/striped-poncho-with-low-heel-booties.html
Also, I did quite a few last year because my feet were more sensitive then. I highly recommend checking out The Walking Company. I wore a lot of their boots when I was babying my feet. This pair is similar to the pair I featured in the link above, but not as $$$ – http://bit.ly/2fWjbbY I had a lot of luck with the Umberto Raffini Nilea brand.
Love this look on you. I am considering the sweater as I really like the look on you. Can’t wait to see more fun winter fashion. Thanks!
You are adorable! I love those boots!
I love the camel coat ! Beautiful ! I would love a post on appropriate outfits for banquets, dinners and get togetherness when you want to look great but comfortable and more casual.
I’ll do my best! 🙂
I really like the colors in your scarf! Very cute outfit!
I love this and would do everything but the tall boots. But they look awesome on you!
Love that camel coat!
I am so excited for the 25 Days of Winter Fashion from you and Cyndi!
Love the dark and light color combination, especially how the scarf ties it all together!
Thank you for the giveaway! I love your blog and how you put outfits together :). I love the colors you’ve been using lately too!
Thanks, Karen! 🙂
Love the coat!
Such a classic look!
I love the camel coat on you!!
The scarf is beautiful!
This is beautiful! I love camel coats and have been looking at this one. So nice to see it styled and so adorbs with plaid scarf.
Thank you for your seasonal series. I love this look! The sweater is much more flattering on you than the website! 😉
I enjoy your blog because your style and body shape are very similar to mine. You even live in my area so I don’t have to worry about climate differences. Please style snow boots!
Will do! 🙂
