Casual Farmer’s Market Outfit

One of our favorite ways to spend our Saturday mornings is at our local Farmer’s Market. There are tons of vendors selling everything from locally raised meats and homegrown fruits and veggies to baked goods and handmade items, and there’s always live music too. It’s a fun place to hang out, and we always come home armed with goodies.

Paul and I thought it would be fun to take some outfit pictures when we visited last weekend. This is the kind of super casual outfit that I typically wear working from home in the summertime, but it’s also the perfect Saturday outfit for a Farmer’s Market run or whatever errands you might have going on. I know it’s nothing spectacular, but I love the combination of grey and white in the summertime, and the pink sandals really pop.

I picked up this grey linen tank at Old Navy for $9. I’ve been wearing it with these white shorts or my distressed crop white jeans about every other day. It’s thin and comfortable in the heat, but it’s not see-through so you don’t need another layer. I have been told the other colors are more see-through, which is the only reason I haven’t snatched it up in a few other colors.

I often wear this outfit with my pink Gigi sandals for a fun pop of color, or sometimes I wear my silver Georgette sandals and bring in color with my jewelry.

I don’t often mix colors, but I decided to step outside of my comfort zone just a bit and wear this turquoise layered necklace. Turquoise and pink go together, right? I also wore a bright pink lipstick rather than my typical nude.

This turquoise stone layering necklace from Stella & Dot elevates a basic grey tank for a stylish fashion statement!

I carried my big striped tote because I like to be able to throw my purchases in my bag, and this one is coated cotton so it wipes off if I get any dirt on it or anything.

I did the front tuck because this top has a shirttail hem, and it’s too long to leave untucked with shorts (although it works well untucked with crop jeans because they are longer and give it more balance.) In these pictures, my shirt is tucked in a bit too far for my taste. I swear, when I did the front-tuck at home, it was bloused out a bit more. It seems short in these pictures, and it’s bugging me a bit. I think a belt would have made this outfit look more put together, but I didn’t wear one because I didn’t realize it would show.

Here’s a side view. You can see here that a belt would have been visible, and might have made the outfit look more finished. I left the shirt untucked in the back because that’s the trendy thing to do (LOL) and tucking it in all around wouldn’t really look good on me. It is not my favorite look, but for a casual outfit at home or running to the Farmer’s Market, it works.

These shield sunglasses are super old and probably outdated, but I’ve always liked them and I happened to grab them as I walked out the door.

Yes, we really did some shopping! In addition to the veggies you can see in my plastic bag, I had some delicious gluten-free baked goods in my tote. YUM.

I’ve had some questions about how I style my hair this way. I’ve been using my daughter’s NuMe Octowand (it is currently $99 – the price is reflected at checkout.) I use one of the medium sized straight barrels and curl my hair in two layers (I pin up the top layer while I curl the bottom.) The key is to curl your hair away from your face. My hairdresser showed me how. It’s a bit of a process so I don’t do it every day, but I really like the results. I feel like I look younger with my hair curled.

Be sure to visit Cyndi and see the summer outfit she’s styling today, and come back tomorrow for my next summer outfit!

  1. What size tank are you wearing? I feel you are similar to me in bust size so just wondered as this size looks perfect on you!

  2. Could you tell us a little about your way of eating, it’s such a big part of looking and feeling good in our clothes.

    1. Hey Anne, I used to write about those topics often! I’m happy to sum it up here, but if you want more info, you can peruse my Real Food category: https://jolynneshane.com/category/food/real-food

Basically, I try to buy organic and local when I can. I’m a fan of real food — good fats like butter, olive oil, lard (yes, lard! LOL) and protein and veggies. I don’t eat gluten, and I try not to buy too many processed foods, but there are a lot of boxed and bagged snacks in our pantry because I have kids, lol. I’m not opposed to ordering pizza or Chinese takeout once a week (okay, sometimes twice) but I try to cook the majority of our meals from scratch.

What we eat is definitely a huge part of how we look and feel in our clothes. In my perfect world, I would eat a paleo diet, but I like carbs and wine too much. 🙂

      1. Jo Lynne, is there a health reason why you are gluten free or is it just to eat better?? I hope I’m not being too nosy, a friend of mine has to eat gluten free and we often eat meals together so I am always looking for gluten free substitutes for stuff. Do you find it difficult?

        1. I suffered from IBS my whole life, and when I got older, I started having more tummy troubles, so I tried going GF after I had been doing the real food thing for a year or so. It definitely has helped! When I cheat and have some, I can feel it and it’s miserable, so I try to steer clear.

It was hard at first, and I do miss it at times, but I’m used to it now. I don’t mind too much. 🙂

    1. Hi Marie. If you slide the cursor over to the side as you scroll, it will go away, but that is helpful feedback. I can have that changed so it’s not in the center of the photo.

  3. I’m really enjoying your blog! I look forward to your outfits, and I get excited when I see your email in my inbox! Question, the clothing/accessories you model, are they sent to you from clothing vendors to promote their brand?
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Hey Claudia! Good question. Sometimes brands send me things, and when they do I say that they were sent to me, and I use c/o when I link to the items under my final picture. But I actually purchase almost everything you see me feature. The links I use are affiliate links so I make a commission when people buy from them, and that’s one way the blog creates revenue to keep me in my shopping habit. Ha! I end up donating much of what you see me post, as I don’t have a very exciting life and don’t need to keep everything I want to feature on the site. That’s probably more than you wanted to know, but I do get these questions often, and I always want to be transparent with you guys. 🙂

  4. Cute casual outfit. I often wear gray and white together, it’s one of my favorite combo. I like your hair, it does look more youthful! I need to try doing that to my hair too and see if it makes me look younger too 🙂

  5. I love the casual look, but the item that made me comment are the shoes! I love the pink “pop” color. It looks like they are out of this color, but they have the red available. You look great.

  6. You look so pretty! Your outfit is perfect for a casual day. I like your hair when it’s straight, but it really is pretty curled. However, I straighten mine most days. I definitely takes so much time to curl it. You always look beautiful!

  7. Are those the Parada sunglasses? I have the exact same ones my “go to” sunglasses. Love the outfit super cute as always

  8. Hi Jo-Lynne. I love the striped tote you have in this picture and I know it’s not available but I’m hoping you can tell me what it is so I can try to find it on ebay. I just love it.! Thanks!
