Luxe Meets Sporty: A Casual Monochromatic Outfit for Fall

As much as I enjoy finding fun new pieces to share, my favorite looks are the ones I remix from the basics in my closet, like this casual monochromatic outfit for fall.

One way to reinvent your basics and make them look new again is to combine luxe and sporty components to create a pleasing juxtaposition. Mixing different patterns and textures also helps to make a simple look more interesting.

For this look, I started with a luxe cashmere turtleneck. Mine is the Equipment brand, which is a Parisian label known for menswear-inspired basics with clean silhouettes and feminine accents. I picked it up on an end-of-season sale a few years ago, so I got it for a steal.

This year’s version is currently 30% off (the code is EQFRIENDS) but that’s still quite an investment, so I’ll link up some other options at the end of the post.

The nice thing about styling an outfit around a classic grey turtleneck is, you can find one at any price point, or you may even have one or two in your closet.

The sweater is a lighter shade of grey, so I paired it with faded black jeans. There’s enough contrast to keep the look interesting, but the faded black denim is more casual than a traditional jet black wash. I like the faded black wash best for pairing with sneakers.

We didn’t get a close-up of these P448 sneakers this time, so I’m borrowing a picture from a different outfit. I like how the python accent adds some subtle print to the look, and the shades of black and grey pull the outfit together.

For lower priced options, you could also wear a plain white sneaker with this outfit, or white sneakers with a black accent would be fun too.

I recently added this Everlane Studio Bag to my closet. The shape reminds me a lot of the Tory Burch McGraw hobo that I like so much.

It’s a great everyday size when you want something a little bigger than a crossbody, but not as large as a full-size tote, and I love the design of the exterior pocket.

Plus, I love that it HAS an exterior pocket. I like a spot to put my phone where I can access it easily.

I accessorized with the Victoria Emerson Levis boho cuff. They’re running a BOGO sale right now, and they sent me a few new bracelets to style. You can see more in THIS POST.

These bracelets are a great way to add sparkle and shine to an outfit, and they have such a unique look about them. I thought this one was perfect for popping this casual monochromatic fall look.

Finally, I topped off the sweater with a leather jacket. The smooth leather brings more texture and interest to the look, and I also appreciate the structure it provides.

My leather jacket is old — it was an #NSale purchase a few years back. Bernardo is the brand, and I’ve been very pleased with it. They have a few options at Nordstrom right now, and some are even on sale.

I love coming up with new looks with my old favorites, and I’m so happy our weather is finally cooperating so I can start layering up my cozy sweaters. This casual monochromatic outfit is perfect for fall errands and outdoor get togethers.

  1. I absolutely love this outfit! I just bought a Bernardo leather jacked a couple of weeks ago from Nordstrom (on sale). I really like it a lot. I tend to not wear turtlenecks much, but that whole outfit is just perfect! I may have to check into that tote, as well. 😉

  2. I hope that Becca has a good first day back in the classroom!  It will be different, but young people can adapt and I think they can do a good job at making the best out of this unusual time.  What a fabulous outfit!  I wish VE was not having another good sale; really, I need to have better self control.  We still are waiting on temps that lend to wearing layers.  Maybe it’ll be here in another month.  Have a great day!

  3. I am a huge fan of the monochromatic look! I especially love it in neutrals. It is so classic and sophisticated. Great job on this look.

  4. Hi Jo Lynne,   I’m so happy for your daughter to be able to get back in school.  I hope she had a great day !   My grand children will start next week.   For 3 days a week.   They are 6 and 7.  They miss their friends so much.  It’s tough for all the parents right now.  I love your outfits today.  The greys  with black  are really pretty And I love that purse too.    I am interested in getting a black jacket so I m going to check the brand you suggested.   Have a great day.   Thanks for all the great ideas  you show us.  🙂

  5. My kids start back all 5 days on Monday (yeah!)  with earlier dismissal times.  We have been in hybrid mode since the start of the year.  Hope everything works out well for Becca.

  6. I hope that Becca has a wonderful first day back at school. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again, I love the way you describe the components of an outfit.

  7. How exciting for your daughter to feel some normalcy in her day even though it may feel strange at the moment:) I love how this outfit is so put together but still has that comfy feel. The weather is sunny and warm again today.. we are between 66-70’s soon we can layer more.

  8. I’m an empty nester with all my kids done with college now. I’ve been amazed by my friends who are navigating home school, remote school, hybrid school, and constant changes between the options. In my old job, I had the opportunity to be in some seminars where child experts talked about one of the best things you can teach your kids is resiliency. The youth of today are having to learn this the hard way. My hope is that they come through on the other side strong and better for it. 2020 has taught me to really appreciate lots of little things I took for granted before. Despite very challenging times, I have much to be grateful for. Loved your description of your morning and your grateful heart. Happy that your daughter was able to go back to school!

Loved the outfit! I’m a big fan of gray and black.

  9. I love this outfit! So much interest despite being monochromatic. I also love the last photo of you walking up the hill with the house in the background.
