How To Dress Up A Casual Sweater for Holiday Parties

Well, I missed the boat on this one, folks!

I was planning to post this outfit tomorrow, but I just noticed this sweater is starting to sell out. I hadn’t really been keeping an eye on it because it isn’t on sale, and generally, that’s when things start to fly off the virtual shelves.

As I’ve said before, I hate to waste a photo shoot, so I’m going ahead and sharing today. At the end, I’ll link up other sweaters that would work with this look.

This is my answer to all the requests in my inbox for casual holiday outfit inspo. This sweater isn’t even particularly festive/holiday — which is nice, because you can continue to wear it all winter long.

But pairing it with coated denim elevates the look and makes it a little more festive. These coated jeans are from White House Black Market.

I love them, but you need to size wayyyy down. I’m wearing the 6 here, but I ended up ordering the 4 because these stretched out and looked bunchy after wearing one night. (This picture was taken after I wore them.)

The 4 arrived, and they fit perfectly. I think they’ll look much better after wearing them for a few hours. Happily, these jeans are still on sale for $59.40, and if you have Shoprunner, they ship free in 2 days.

Then I added blingy earrings. This is the key component to making this look like a holiday outfit.

I could have even gone bigger — I love J.Crew for bold, sparkly earrings that really jazz up a casual look and make it more festive. Baublebar is another good brand that won’t break the budget.

These are from LOFT, and they’re really pretty and lightweight. Even though they’re flowers, I think they read as snowflakes.

Either way, they help elevate this look from date night to holiday/festive.

I carried a clutch rather than a larger bag, but a crossbody or dressy shoulder bag would work just as well, depending on your needs.

And I wore sock booties, but I would actually prefer this look with suede pumps, I think. Either works, but pumps would dress it up more.

I topped off the look with a wool coat — my J.Crew cocoon coat.

Unfortunately this coat is no longer on sale. It went 50% off on Cyber Monday, but it isn’t included in the current J.Crew promos. This is just an idea, though. I think a classy wool coat should be a part of every woman’s wardrobe if she lives in a cold climate.

I wear this one a lot, mainly to church and with dressier outfits, but you can certainly wear it with casual looks as well.

  1. This is a great nice casual holiday and beyond outfit.  I actually like the sock booties with it since they create a lean line.  Have an awesome day!

  2. Love the earrings! Just ordered them using your site, thank you!!! Will look great with my Christmas sweater and my dress.

  3. Great outfit. I love my WHBM coated jeans. I bought them in black and gray. (Both look great with the gray tone snakeskin booties for a more casual look.) I sized down twice, too, at the salesclerk’s suggestion. I was skeptical. No one who has been a 10/12 her entire adult life is ever an 8. LOL. She was right. Love the sweater. For those that have sensitive skin and avoid any wool, I also found this sweater that I might try.

  4. The fair isle print is so cute. I haven’t bought one yet but love how classic it is! The snowflake earrings are the perfect complement to the look. (Cute stocking stuffer idea.) Wish I could pull off coated jeans. My rump doesn’t need anymore attention. :{
