Cause We’re All About The Equal Opportunity

You see that Wusthof knife I’ve recommended in my Amazon widget, over there on the sidebar?  (You may have to scroll down a bit.)   I say in my review that it makes chopping vegetables like slicing butter.  It’s that quality that makes it a fabulous knife but also a dangerous weapon.   Yeah, well.  You probably know where this is going.

Last night I was slicing an onion for dinner.  I’ve never mastered the art of holding the onion so that my knuckles, rather than my fingertips, are closest to the blade of the knife.  But I do try to be extra careful when my slicing gets closer to the end near my hand.

So I was slicing away with my right hand when the knife suddenly slipped on the slippery onion skin and hacked off the corner of the fingernail on my left thumb.  Fortunately my reflexes were working fast enough so that I managed to avoid contact with my skin.

As I inspected my thumb to reassure myself that there was no damage, I had to stop and chuckle.  I ask you this.  Who else but I could manage to nearly lose the tip of both thumbs in the same week?

  1. I am going to remember to pray for safety for you each week! 🙂
I am a complete klutz. I hurt myself all the time. Last night, while talking to my hubby, I bent down to pick something up off the kitchen floor and as I was coming back up, I hit my head so hard on a kitchen chair. I get so mad at myself when I do these things, too!

I am tagging (is that the right term still?) for a meme. I know you have one you can repost about 6 things about yourself somewhere. Or think of some new ones! I just thought of you because you make me laugh and have been so helpful with my blog.

  2. Girlfriend, you need to stop with all the dangerous equipment. Take a week off! Don’t do anything around the house, don’t cook, don’t clean out any drawers. Just sit and watch American Idol. Stay out of the danger zones! And for goodness sake, spend the extra money for pre-chopped veggies!

    Glad you’re okay!

  3. seriously — please stay away from sharp objects before you hurt yourself or someone else!!!

good grief, girl, my heart stopped beating when i started to read that post, SURE you were going to be in the ER again!!!

  4. Really this comes as no shock, you really need to take better care of your hands. I think a manicure is the only way to make it up to your hands.
You may also want to look into getting a Hold ‘N Slice from pampered chef, its like 3 or 4 dollars and you can order on-line. It will save your fingers while using sharp knives. I may go look in the drawers and see if I have an extra because I really worry about your hands. What would happen to your blog???

  5. Close call…again!! Especially since that is one serious knife. This has been a week for your digits. Whew!

I have one of those Pampered Chef slicers and can’t use it any more because of a close call. Shiver.

I buy bags of frozen chopped onions a lot!

  6. lol. poor thing!! at least they are both still attached. and be careful with your toes. spring is coming and you can only get the full effect of peep-toes with all 10 toes still safely attached.

  7. I love my Wusthof knives and I have also managed to lose several fingernails and even a corner of my thumb over the past couple years. But that’s the price you have to pay when using such great knives!

  8. Oh shudder. That brings back memories of when I did that to my index finger except I not only sliced half the nail but took a good gouge of finger too.

But I’d still rather use of good knife than a dull one.

  9. Heidi – I’ve heard that too. And I still recommend them!! 🙂 I think it needed to be sharpened, actually. It shouldn’t have slipped like it did on the onion skin.

  10. Heidi is right, sharp knives are less dangerous, as they are less likely to slip. Wusthoffs are one of the few things I miss about my restaurant days.

  11. Ouch! Glad you still have your thumb. I’m such a klutz. Even though I’d love a good knife, it is probably best for my hands if I wait until I don’t have to simultaneously make dinner and entertain munchkins.

  12. Oh my! You need the gadget I bought at my friend’s Pampered Chef show. It’s a protector for when you cut! I don’t know the exact name but if you want it, I’ll look it up for you. :o)

    Stay safe……please!
