Coast-to-Coast Summer Survival: Summer Night Out

I’m back with another post in our Coast-to-Coast Summer Survival series and today we’re talking about a summer night out. I love putting date night outfits together, so I’ve been looking forward to this one!

My idea of a fun summer night out is dining with good friends or my husband at an outdoor restaurant — preferably one with a view, but I think dining al fresco is fun no matter what. My husband and I love to go out to eat. We’re fond of the smaller farm-to-table type of spots, and the BYOB is popular here in PA. You can save a LOT by going to a BYO because restaurants mark up their alcohol significantly, so this is our first choice when possible.

A couple of weeks ago we went to one of our favorite local spots for our anniversary dinner, and this is what I wore.

Olive and black is one of my favorite color combinations, so this outfit came together easily. Both this blouse and the jeans came in my last Trunk Club. They are pretty spendy, but I had enough Trunk Club credits to cover them, and I plan to keep both pieces for many years. That said, you can recreate a similar look at any price point, so I’ll link to some other options at the end of this post.

You know me, animal print is my favorite way to spice up an outfit, so I wore my leopard sandals from QVC as well as my new Stella & Dot watch with the leopard wrist band. I don’t usually wear two animal prints in the same outfit, but neither piece is very large and I felt like they were fun together.

I carried the black tassel clutch that I received at the rewardStyle conference in Dallas last spring. This is such a classic bag, and the leather is sublime.

The blouse has enough going on so I went for a bold earring instead of a necklace. These earrings are from Stella & Dot, and they’re perfect for a night out. They’re a bit much for daytime, in my opinion, but I tend to be understated with my jewelry so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Here’s a better look. There is a bit of gold in them too, which is a nice touch and tied in the gold from my watch.

My bracelet is also from Stella & Dot. I ordered it along with the earrings because I thought they would work well together. If you saw my fall jewelry trends post yesterday, you know that gunmetal is a big trend right now.

Sometimes y’all ask about my makeup. I used this Urban Decay Palette on my eyes. I have 2 Urban Decay eye shadow palettes, and they are all I use, but honestly, I probably only need one. This one is my favorite because it has several shades of blue.

I always line my eyes on top with with this smudge brush and my Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner, and then I apply two or three coats of Lancome Hypnose Drama Full Body Volume Mascara. On the bottom, I use the smudge brush dipped in one of the eye shadows I used on my lid.

I always line my lips and fill them in with this MAC lip pencil in Spice and then I use one of several cream lipsticks that I have. For this look, I combined a few to get the color I wanted. I almost always top with a gloss because I like the moisture and it helps make my thin lips look a little fuller. And my foundation is MAC Studio Sculpt with jane iredale PurePressed Base on top.

My blouse is quite sheer and also cut low under the arms, so the Nordstrom website recommends a base layer. I wore a tank top for this photo shoot, although I went without for our date night. It’s a matter of personal preference. For me, it depends on where I’m going and who I’m with.

I’d love to have the top taken up maybe a half inch in the shoulders so it doesn’t hang quite so low. I’m short-waisted, and while petite tops are too short for me, regular tops are often a tad too long.

I pulled my hair back as I often do. I just criss-cross 4 bobby pins to hold it.

And that’s how this look came together! It’s simple, really, but I love the combination of colors and fabrics and the small pops of leopard.

  1. Beautiful outfit! You look amazing. Your piece about back to school shopping, and children made me feel so nostalgic. I still have one at home, but it won’t be that long before he’ll be headed to college. You’re amazing with style, and fashion. But, you’re also a gifted writer. 🙂

  2. I think getting the top taken up the shoulders would be a great idea. I found the black tank underneath distracting in these photos. Love those heels!

  3. You look amazing! I love the pop of leopard too! I need to step up my date night game..thanks for the inspiration!

  4. That top is fabulous! Such a great color, and you are right about the pops of animal print – they are perfect! And I reallllly think I might need those earrings! They are gorgeous!
