Coat Crush

As I’m getting older and honing my personal style, I’ve started viewing coats as less of a necessary evil and more of a fun accessory that can instantly change up your winter look. Because let’s face it, when you live in a colder climate, there are a lot of times your coat is all people see of your “outfit.”

This Paloma Faux Fur Trim Coat by Marc New York is the latest addition to my coat wardrobe, and I love it! It’s practical and warm as well as fashion forward. The asymmetrical zipper is a fun detail, and the faux fur hood creates a hint of drama.

I wore it over an off-the-shoulder sweater to go out to dinner with my husband last weekend, and it kept me toasty warm plus I felt super chic wearing it. My only complaint is it picks up lint like crazy! You can sort of see it in the pictures. I will have to start carrying a lint brush in my purse.

Anyway, I lucked out and found this coat on a super sale on the Andrew Marc website last month when I was writing my Winter Coat Guide, and I couldn’t pass it up. It disappeared from their website soon after that, and I later found it on the Bloomingdale’s website for full price, but guess what? It is BACK on the Andrew Marc website and still marked down! I mean, a quality coat like this for $79!?! CRAZYTOWN.

For size reference, I have a 6 in this coat. Normally I’d go for an 8 in a coat to give some layering room, but the 6 is perfect. I’m not quite sure why I ordered that size… maybe they were out of the size 8 that day? Anyway! It worked out. I’d say it’s true to size, or if you are in between at all, go down.

Under the coat, I’m wearing a sweater I featured during our fall fashion series with bootcut jeans, but I decided there’s no reason why I shouldn’t feature it again. I still wear it, after all!

This sweater is super soft and stretchy, and it actually has somewhat of a luxe look to it. For $39, I’d say it’s a good value. I like the length, and while it’s cut sort of boxy, it sits on the hips in a way that is flattering.

Plus the sleeves are just fun. Yes, they get in the way if I’m doing dishes, but I mostly wear it to church and out to dinner and places where it doesn’t matter if I have big flared sleeves.

This is the way I normally wear it — with black jeans and black mules. I’ve worn this outfit a few times already this fall. (In fact, I wore it yesterday!) This sweater is also cute with distressed jeans and grey ballet flats. I just love this shade of pink; it goes so well with all of my favorite neutrals!

For size reference, I have this sweater in the medium. I ordered the medium because it’s a juniors brand, and I wanted to be sure it wasn’t too short and tight. I don’t know if I’d like the small better or not, but this is how it looks if you size up from your normal.

I wore a necklace the last time I styled this sweater, but this time I left it plain. The necklace does mess with the mockneck, and while that doesn’t really bother me, a few of you mentioned it in the comments on that post so I wanted to show you how it looks without. I don’t mind the sweater without a necklace; it’s purely preference.

I’m kind of a plain Jane and sometimes I actually prefer my outfits with fewer accessories, but I typically wear a bigger pair of earrings when I forego a necklace.

The day I photographed this look, I met Alison at a park where we shot four different outfits. (I change in my car.) Sometimes I forget to think through every detail of every outfit when I’m packing up the car, and then when I get there, I find myself wishing I’d brought something else. This was one of those times.

So let’s discuss these shoes… I’ve been wearing these mules a lot this fall. I’m really liking the loafer look the more I wear them. I feel like they give a modern edge to any basic jeans and sweater outfit, and let’s face it, that’s pretty much what I live in!

These are extremely comfortable, but there are only a few sizes left. Neimans has a few, and theirs are on sale. Plus there are a few at R Minkoff and Shopbop. For other options, these are sort of similar, and I also like these but I’m not sure how well they’ll stay on the feet.

So isn’t this spot so cool? We were at the Washington Memorial Chapel at Valley Forge National Park. The architecture is just gorgeous, as you can see. We had so much fun shooting here. Alison knows of all kinds of great spots in our area.

Thanks for stopping by, and as always, if you have any questions on fit or quality, feel free to ask in the comments!

  1. Jo-Lynne, I love this coat and the pretty sweater but I have to tell you that your pictures for this series are just amazing! I love the different backgrounds; your outfits just pop against them! If this is your husband, wow! He is very talented. Just wanted to pass that on. I’ve been so impressed every day!

  6. Wow, this coat is awesome! Modern and chic – love the zipper and the faux fur on the hood. I also wanted to say you killed it yesterday with the Teen/Tween gift buying guide. Thanks to you, I’m all done shopping for that age group this year! Thank you!

  7. I have always steered away from coats with fur on the hood as I worry that it will create static with my hair.  Do you find that to be an issue?

  8. Love your new coat on you.  What a good deal if it now is $79.  Bummer about the lint thing, but like you said, just keep a lint brush around. 🙂  You look so cute as usual and love the places you did the photo shoots at.  Happy Thanksgiving to come.  🙂

  9. JoLynne,
I love your web site and the emails I receive from you. I am having trouble when I click on view post the link does not open ans says bad path. Is there anything I can do on my end to fix this?
    Again, I LOVE your emails.
    Thank you

  10. What a beautiful post and this pink sweater is gorgeous! The lint on the coat is something I couldn’t get beyond and purposely stay away from on black coats bc of my Corgi’s fur EVERYWHERE! Dog fur is a huge regret in being talked into getting a pet a couple years ago…but I love my fur baby!!!
