Coffee Talk 02.11.18

Greetings, friends! I hope you’re all having a good weekend. Ours has been fairly low-key, which is nice.

We went to my daughter’s basketball game on Friday night, and last night Paul and I had a dinner date. The food wasn’t that great, but the atmosphere was nice, and it was good to have some time to relax and chat uninterrupted. We spent most of yesterday running errands, I fit in a 30-minute run, we shopped for new eyeglasses for Paul, and I even managed to grab a nap before dinner.

I was feeling unreasonably tired, even before we went out to run errands. It was almost bizarre, I was so tired. I was sort of feeling it on Friday too, but it really hit me yesterday. I don’t know if I was fighting off a bug, or if it was the after-effects of the deep tissue massage I had on Friday afternoon, or being up a little later than my normal on Friday night, or the series of rainy days… but whatever it was, it was weird. I’m glad I was able to rest before dinner because I felt much better after that.

Speaking of rain, this is the third Sunday in a row we’ve had heavy rain, and it’s really putting a crimp in my wardrobe selection! I mean, there are only so many outfits I can come up with that work with rain boots. Ha!

(Yes, I realize Christians in other parts of the world risk life and limb to worship with fellow believers and couldn’t care less what they wear. Please take my comments in the light-hearted manner in which they’re intended.)

On a more positive note, I had an absolutely glorious run yesterday in 45 degree weather. It’s funny how being a runner changes your perspective on the weather. A cloudy 45 degree day in February used to sound horribly depressing, but now it’s pretty much my idea of perfection. (I got my run in before the rain started.) And it’s looking like this entire week is going to be fairly mild, so I’m looking forward to building up some consistency again.

My 5k is a month away, and while I can certainly run 3.1 miles, I’d like to actually race it and not just run. I just looked it up, and my personal best is 27:56 from back in May of 2013, as chronicled in this post; and my last 5K time is 28:53 from November of 2015. I can’t believe it’s been that long since I’ve run a 5K. I really thought the last one was Thanksgiving Day, 2016, but nope! Good thing I always post my run times on the blog. It took some deep diving, but I found it.

ANYWAY, setting a new PR is a lofty goal at this point, but I’d at least like to run my St. Paddy’s Day 5K in under 30 minutes. That’s definitely doable. If I can match my last 5K time of 29 minutes, even better!

Ultimately, though, I’m just grateful to be out there. I don’t care much about times anymore. I’m afraid my tendency to push myself to a faster pace has contributed to some of the injuries I’ve experienced, so it’s probably best to just go out for a set amount of time and enjoy the run.

Speaking of which, my running playlist is in serious need of updating. Anyone have some good songs I should add? What do you like to listen to when you work out? I’m a huge fan of Mumford & Sons for running music, and the Lumineers are always good. I’ve got some Green Day on there, a couple from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Struts, even Shakira. Then I also like to rotate in some songs from old favorites like Springsteen and Aerosmith. I also like to run to Kelly Clarkson, Pink, and Carrie Underwood. And because my music tastes are nothing if not eclectic, I have some Christian artists mixed in — I especially like Matt Redman. I try to change up my running playlist every few months so I don’t get bored, and it’s overdue for an update.

Okay, well, it’s time to figure out what to wear to church with my rain boots this week! Ha!

I hope you all have a lovely, restful Sunday. And if you’re experiencing this monsoon, stay dry out there!

  1. I’m glad your dinner was nice even if the food wasn’t that great.  Sounds like your weekend has been pretty uneventful which those are so nice to have every once in a while.  Have a blessed day!

  2. Happy Sunday Jo-Lynne!  I was so sorry to read that your dinner was bust.  If I remember correctly, you said you were going to Davio’s?  I LOVE that restaurant, and the food is always superb here in Boston…(where the restaurant first started)  I’m not sure if the menu is the same at every location, but obviously the chef’s are not.  So please, if you ever come to Boston, make sure to give them a try here…it will blow your taste buds away!  Raining pretty hard here in Boston today too!  Much luck and success with the 5K!!!

    1. Yeah, I don’t know, maybe it was just an off night. The worst part was, our service was really rushed. That’s a huge pet peeve of mine… I can deal with mediocre food if the service and pacing is on point. Oh, well… I’ll try it again sometime. I think it would be a fun place for a group outing, not so much a quiet dinner for two.

  3. I like to listen to Coldplay’s more uptempo songs and U2 as well. I’ve started running recently. While I still don’t care for it much if I can get passed (or is it past) the first 5 minutes i’m usually good. Enjoy your Sunday!

  4. I downloaded the That’s what I call a workout throwback edition and it’s awesome. Check it out if you think that might interest you. It was mostly 90’s type hip hop songs.

  5. Ok, don’t laugh, but I throw some 80’s on my playlist, along with some upbeat Justin Timberlake. And some “old school” N’Sync and Backstreet Boys!! I also have added the Eagles Fight Song  on it. That is certainly something to make one smile during a workout!! Fly Eagles Fly!
Happy Birthday!! I wish you a wonderful, healthy year!!

  6. I was sort of grousing this morning about this being the third Sunday in a row that it’s been rainy (and therefore difficult to figure out what to wear to church). And we live in South Georgia so it’s apparently everywhere east of the Mississippi! LOL! I hate that you even have to insert that disclaimer about knowing how we don’t have it all that hard. People really need to lighten up and look a little deeper to see the heart of the person speaking. Anyone who knows you realizes you’d never claim that wardrobe issues we face in any way equate to the hardships others around the world are facing. Sigh.

  7. I love love love running to Bon Jovi and of course Meatloaf and Springsteen. The oldies but the goodies. They are all on my playlist and waiting for me to get back into the swing of running after my total hip replacement I am having Feb 13. Too young for joint replacements but that’s what happens with too much long distance running. Will be running no more than 5 miles from now on.

    1. Oh yes, love all of those! I hope your hip replacement goes well. My mileage hovers around 2-3 miles right now, so I think the risk of injury is fairly small, lol. I would like to get back to doing 4-5, mainly for weight-loss or weight-maintenance purposes.

  8. Cant Stop the Feeling – Justin Timberlake, The Bucket – Kings of Leon, and Long Black Road – ELO — these are three of my favorite on my running playlist!

  9. Hi Jo-Lynne, Great job with the running!!! And your soundtrack is extremely important, so good for you for changing it up! I do the same thing. This may sound odd, but some of my favorite music for running is actually by JS Bach! There are two of his orchestral pieces that are truly beautiful and have a lot of “motion” in them! I highly recommend Brandenberg Concerto No. 3 and Brandenberg Concerto No. 5. Each concerto has 3 movements, and the first and third movements of each of these pieces are exciting, and the middle movement is more peaceful, but still very wonderful for being outdoors and enjoying nature! I hope you will give them a try. Happy running!

  10. Ok, here are some suggestions that put oomph and happy  into my workouts:
Love Runs Out by OneRepublic ; Tighten Up by The Black Keys ; Last Dance by Donna Summer;  Last Mile Home by Kings of Leon ; Empire State of Mind by Jay Z and Alicia Keys ; Wish I Knew You When I Was Young by The Revivalists ; Dog Days are Over by Florence & The Machine ; Happy by Pharrell Williams ; And you can’t beat running to
The Edge of Glory by Lady Gaga

    Happy Running!

  11. I have a St. Paddy’s Day 5K coming up also. Was training a little hard last week and over did it and ended up in Urgent Care , so had to take 5 days off, and the first day i slept most of it, then the second day i went and got a massage that help me feel a lot better. Hopefully tomorrow i can get some training in and not over do it.

      1. Overexertion Which in return shot my Blood Pressure up 170/120 and high heart rate and low oxygen levels today my trainer kept checking my heart rate and made me rest and drink water in between sets he said we was going to really watch it from now on

  12. Hey Jolynne hope you’ve had a great weekend!  This is totally random but I have an idea for a post I’d like to see.  Could you style a couple of different outfit ideas around tennis shoes?  You know those times when you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking so you need the comfort and support of tennis shoes but don’t want to look like a soccer mom?  In the summer it’s easier with denim shorts and a cute statement tee,  but it’s so much harder in the winter!  I default to athletic leggings with a fitted pullover hoodie but feel like that looks sloppy; on the other hand tennis shoes paired with jeans seems too matronly.  Any ideas??
Btw totally agree with whoever said *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys for workout music!  I’m a 90s child so that’s definitely what I jam to when I workout!  Have a great rest of the weekend!

    1. Hm, I can try! Honestly, I never wear running shoe with jeans, but I do see other bloggers pull it off in a way that’s cute. They’re young, though, and honestly, that may be part of the equation… I’m not sure. I’ll see what I can come up with.

  13. Hey there. I’m updating my playlist also. I love anything that helps me move. Are you a fan of movie soundtracks? My faves at the moment are La La Land and the music from the Broadway hit, Hamilton. Another favorite, since you like M&S, is a group called Darlingside. Happy Running!

  14. Okay! So you have inspired me! Time to put on my running shoes and get back out there. Can you help me with how you dress for these temperatures? I have always been a fair weather runner, so I’m not sure what to do when the temps are below 60 degrees 😀

    Thanks!

  15. I am with a lot of the ladies – 80’s and 90’s music always gets me going. I think it is because I know all the words and can do a little workout karaoke in my head! Haahaa! Also there are two great Canadian bands Hedley and Marianas Trench that have some great upbeat songs. Happy running!
