Coffee Talk 02.25.18

Greetings, friends! I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Ours has been nice. Paul and I found ourselves kid-free once again on Friday night so we went out for a casual bite to eat. Yesterday my son had an all-day indoor drumline rehearsal so we took the girls and went to the mall.

Taking the whole family to the mall isn’t something we do often (or ever) so it was kind of fun for something different. Of course, you know me. The mall is always my idea of a good time, but it’s kind of cool that our kids are at an age now where we all think it’s a good solution for a rainy Saturday. We split up a few times so we could all accomplish our personal goals, and it worked out well.

Today we have plans to visit my in-laws after church, which is always a nice time. I’m trying not to be cranky that this is like the 5th rainy Sunday in a row. Thankfully it should dry out by the time we have to make our drive, so at least there’s that.

I’m excited by all the positive feedback on my new newsletter format. It’s been fun coming up with ideas for the exclusive features and making it more of an inside scoop. If you’re not getting my newsletter and would like to try it, you can sign up here.

If you aren’t sure you want another email in your inbox, it’s easy to unsubscribe at any time — there’s a link at the very bottom of every email. It can’t hurt to try it! If you like the blog, I’m pretty sure you’ll love the newsletter. Just sayin’.

I’m super excited to start our spring fashion series on Thursday. I’m trying to plan out my outfits so there’s a good variety. I’ll be honest that I’m not having a lot of luck finding anything I like in the new straight leg pant styles. I really just love my skinnies and bootcuts. I guess I need to get to the mall (without an entourage) and try on a bunch of styles. That’s on my agenda for this coming week.

Let me know if there are any trends you’d like to see my style or occasions you have coming up you want ideas for, and I’ll see what I can do.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a blessed Sunday!

  1. I’m looking forward to seeing some straight leg styles, as I have thick calves.   I wear skinnies but I think straight legs might be a better option for me.  Having short legs, I’m not a fan of  flares because I think they look better with heels and I can’t wear them much anymore. Especially for work…..my days are too long. Not sure I’ve ever tried boot cut so I need to keep that in mind.  What type of flat or low heel would you wear with those? A pointed toe? I know working from home, you wear jeans most of the time. And I would certainly never ask you to invest in pieces that you won’t wear but if you see if cute business casual options that you would wear, would you mind taking pictures to share or maybe during one of your dressing room try on sessions – if you have the time? Have a great Sunday!

    1. Hey Keena. I think bootcut pants and jeans look best with a pointy toe shoe, especially if it’s a flat or low heeled style. I like the idea of doing a try-on haul with work wear styles, since I don’t really need to purchase a lot of those styles. I admit that I struggle with making those looks work, though. I always feel frumpy in work wear and I’m not sure why I can’t nail it.

  2. Thanks so much for your hard work! I look forward to your posts every day, because our style is so similar, excluding high heels! Anyways, I was out at the mall too yesterday (still looking for jeans that fit) and found a pair of Paige “verdugo” ankle that actually fit everywhere with the exception of being a hair loose in the waist.
I can’t remember is you said Paige or AG were your “go to” brand, but I want to know about the stretch on these if you have a pair. Specifically in the waist, I don’t want them falling off within 2 hours! Thanks again;)

    1. Hey Ginger. The Paige Verdugo is my next favorite style – after the AG legging jeans. I think you’ll love them. They do not stretch much if at all, so I think you’ll do okay, but consider an alteration if the waist is too big. It’s not hard to do, from what I understand.

  3. If Paul is not a shopper, I know you appreciated him accompanying the females in his family.  I am very interested in the lower price point straight leg jeans.  Sorry! 😉 I have all of the skinny and bootleg jeans I need, but am in need of a straight leg pair after #noshoppinglent.  The rain is headed our way.  Enjoy the time with the family!

  4. I’m looking forward to the spring series! I’m so ready for spring, but I’m sure it’s still a few weeks off for us here in northern Illinois. I’m currently taking the Adore Your Wardrobe Course 1, and am an even-waisted straight, so I’m so thrilled that I can keep wearing skinny jeans. I do like the look of bootcut jeans (and have a couple of pairs), but by the end of the day, for some reason, they just feel heavy on me. Weird, I know. I’d like to try straight jeans, to see if I like them, so I’m definitely interested to see if you find some that you like. I *love* my AG legging jeans, and probably wouldn’t have tried them if not for you.

  5. I have a church ladies spring tea coming up in April.  I would love to see a post with some spring dress fashions.  Thanks!

  6. Would love to see some straight leg styles. I’m taking the Adore your Wardrobe course now after your many recommendations ( #shortwaistedcarrot #cool) and shouldn’t wear skinny pants. It’s a great course so glad you recommended it! I’m learning so much. Would you be able to post shirt lengths sometimes too?

  7. It’s funny when trends change we can become resistant. Remember going from mom jeans to low rise and flairs? Skinny jeans have never looked good on me until I was able to find the curvey fit at the Loft. Straight and boot cut look the best on me so I’ve stayed with that style. As for the rise, mid rise has always been perfect. Even in the mom jeans days the high rise could have doubled for an underwire bra!

    1. Me too Janice!  I can’t seem to find skinnies that fit – thicker thighs make it hard. Everything is always tight there and I find myself adjusting them all day. I have a few pair of LOFT curvy straight and a pair of bootcut and like them.  They do stretch out a bit but oh well… LOFT doesn’t alway carry them except online – they definitely trend toward skinny. Oh and the curvy straight cords were SO tight in the thighs. Frustrating!!

  8. Jo-Lynne, I love the new format. Can’t wait to see the outfits you and Cindy style for Spring. Could you throw in a couple of cute casual type dresses I could wear on weekends or to Church on Sunday since ours is pretty casual? Thanks and have a great week.

  9. Oh, how I wish spring would hurry up and get here! I’m ready for a change over in some of my wardrobe pieces.
My question is what’s in style this year in sneakers?
I used to find the mall the most exciting place to be but now I’m only there a short time and I’m ready to get out of the loud, overcrowded, too much stuff overload. Getting old?
    Have a wonderful Sunday!

    1. Haha, I hear ya! It was crowded on Saturday and it was definitely a case of over stimulation. I think slip-on sneakers are still going to be popular this year. Definitely a good post idea!

  10. As a retired person living 1 1/2 hours from basic middle class stores, I would love to see more clothes featured from lower priced stores, Macys, Penneys, Marshalls, Dress Barn, Christopher and Banks. Also we could use outfit suggestions for those of us who hhave developed major figure challenge and are short. An average to slim person can get out fit ideas from any magazine, how about something to represent less than perfect shapes and ages? We still like to look nice and somewhat fashionable even if we are over 70!

  11. Loving the new format, nice job! I’m bummed that the VC booties are sold out in my size but I love that you posted the sale and how you styled them. I’ll just have to look for some similar open toed booties for spring.
So excited about the spring series and maybe you can add some Athleisure Outfits as well? Looks like we’re going to get some sun today 🌞 after weeks of cloudy rainy weather in Texas. I’ll some some your way!

  12. I’ve often read about dresses with fitted tops and flared skirts over which women wear other tops to add variety to their wardrobes. I’m not sure how to do that without looking frumpy. Please demonstrate, explain or discourage if it’s just a dumb idea. Thanks. Love the new format.

    1. Hey Jan. Not a dumb idea at all 🙂 but I’m not sure I’m cool enough to pull off that look. Haha! I don’t care for flared skirt on me to begin with. I think women have to have a certain style persona to pull off those types of more unusual looks. Definitely a cool vibe, but I may not be the blogger for that. 😉

  13. Hi Jo-Lynne, I have been thinking about posts for you as I go about my crazy life LOL. One thing that I know a lot of fashion blogs refer to is getting “good fit” on jeans and other pieces. Can you define that more clearly. I am a curvy girl (16-18) and only 5’4″ and I think whether you are a size 6 or 16 you still need good fit. I think sometimes we ladies in our busy lives just take “good enough” in our fit and not patiently work toward “excellent.” It would be helpful to address this and to also talk about “rear view” pocket size in relation to hinny size (LOL… I can’t believe I just wrote that). Also, pocket placement is key… sometime they sit to low and make things look saggy… you know what I mean. For me it makes a huge difference on a jacket where it hits my hips and nips in at my waist. Alterations to sleeve length, waist, and shoulders can be key too take good to excellent in fit. These are the kinds of things I would love for you to talk about in said post. What do you think?

  14. Hi Jo-Lynne, I love your new format. I look forward to your email every day. It is my treat after a long day at work to look at new clothes and get ideas for new styles! I echo some of the other comments- I would like to know what is new in sneaker styles and also I am in need of work pants- all the time! I find that I wear more pants than skirts or dresses as a science teacher and I usually wear flats or wedges. Are there any stylish “khakis” out there? I like tan pants for spring.

      1. Thank you! I like the Banana pants but I think I would do a shoe, not a sneaker with those since I don’t wear sneakers to school. I think I would maybe need to see the Old Navy ones to see if they would work. What do you think of Loft for pants? If you do a series or post on spring pants, I’d be so appreciative if you keep business casual work pants in mind!

  15. I’m not sure if I get your newsletter. I get two emails from you each day, but they look identical so I delete one automatically. How would I know one is a newsletter? I didn’t notice any changes to your emails  though…..hmmmmm.

  16. I am excited to see what you come up with in styling straight let jeans! I find them hard to work with as well but I like them! Good luck. 🙂

  17. Hi Jo-Lynne, I look forward to seeing what you come up with for straight leg pants. I am currently in the AYW course and discovered I am a #shortwaistedpear and should not be wearing skinnies, which is all I own and like. I am trying to venture out of my comfort zone with straight jeans, but am not having luck finding any I like either. I know bootcut jeans are also good for my body type, but I only like the way those look with heels and to be honest, I work from home and am not looking to walk around in heels all day. I appreciate all of the work you put into the blog and enjoy reading it every day! Thank you.

    1. Hey Renee, it’s tough, I know. I really don’t feel like straight and bootcut styles look as modern as skinnies. I did link to a pair in the Shopbop sale that looked promising. I would try to find straight jeans with a narrower leg opening – some straight leg jeans are wider than others, you know?
