Coffee Talk 03.11.18

Greetings, friends! Did everyone remember to turn their clocks ahead? I got up this morning to discover that my boy scout had already adjusted all the clocks in the house, so that’s nice.

I always try not to over-think the time change. It’s like switching time zones when you fly across the country; you just have to set the clocks and then start living in the new time zone. If I don’t allow myself to calculate what time my body clock thinks it is, I find I adjust a lot easier. That strategy usually works pretty well, but sometimes that hour can really mess with you.

I hear the state of Florida is voting on staying in daylight savings time year-round, and I’m all for that. I wish it was a national bill. Daylight savings time has totally outlived its usefulness, in my opinion, and it just messes things up. Although, I don’t understand why they would stay in daylight savings and not just stop practicing it altogether, like Arizona and Hawaii… and isn’t there a pocket of Mississippi or Missouri that doesn’t observe it either? It seems like we should all be consistent, but what do I know?

Anyway. Enough on that.

Yesterday’s white t-shirt review was well received! I’m so glad; I worked hard on that. When I do posts like this, there are always more I wish I’d tried… Target, Gap, Old Navy seem like obvious ones. Ann Taylor and Banana Republic are probably worth another look; I’ve liked theirs in the past, and some of you said you like tees from JCP and Walmart. Hopefully you can at least see what I’m looking for in a t-shirt and how to differentiate between tees that are on trend and more classic. Also I think we can all agree that the boob pocket is of the devil. The sooner designers get on that bandwagon, the better!

Like anything else, you have to go with what works for your personal style. While I can see that the Talbots ones are the most flattering of all the tees I tried, they don’t quite suit my personal style aesthetic — at least not at this present time. I think that’s why there is no perfect white t-shirt; everyone’s idea of the perfect tee is a little bit different.

In other news, I spent most of yesterday listing things on eBay. I saved a lot of spring and summer clothes from last year, not sure if I wanted to keep them or not, and knowing they would sell better now than when I put them away last fall. I brought those down from the attic, went through them all, and listed a bunch of bags, dresses, and tops. I’m also selling my Fitbit Flex along with the Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet I used to wear it in most often. They’re gently worn but still look great.

You can see a lot of what I listed on my shopjolynnescloset IG page, or go directly to my eBay page.

Also, I’ve decided to give the proceeds of my closet sale to a ministry that is close to my heart. I have several that I like to support, and I haven’t decided if I’ll choose one or spread it around, but I believe that God has laid it on my heart to put this revenue towards a good cause rather than to pad my bank account or put more stuff back into my closet.

Of course, I’m always buying more stuff because that is part of my job, but I want to keep this separate. I feel a lot better about putting prices on my things and accepting payment for them if I know it’s going to a person or a cause that needs it more than I do, and I hope those shopping my closet will enjoy knowing the proceeds are benefitting others as well. I’ll share where I decide to donate those funds when the time comes.

As for today, we have our usual church service this morning and then I’m planning on an afternoon nap. I was up at 5:20 this morning (and that’s daylight savings time) so I know I’m going to be dragging by mid-afternoon.

I hope you all have a wonderfully relaxing and blessed Sunday!

  1. I just wanted you to know that Sunday Coffee Talk is probably my favorite thing on your blog. I look forward to it every weekend. I am sipping my coffee and getting ready to link over to your tshirt post right now (how did I miss that?) Have a great rest of your day!

  2. GM! We have a gloomy day in Texas but yesterday the sun was shining and it was 80 degrees but we have a cold front coming though today.  So I have to keep a mix of seasons in my closet until we officially go into spring or summer, which ever decides to come first. I went to Old Navy and Marshall’s yesterday and boy were the limes crazy long with all the spring break shoppers. So,  I decided to come home and take a nap lol
Love hearing that you are donating the proceeds of your clothes to a good cause.
You are beautiful inside and out!

  3. I enjoy these Sunday posts as well! Thanks for the white t-shirt post yesterday. It inspired me to go to my local mall & try to find a good one w/ a v-neck..  No luck! I started at the Gap b/c I love their t-shirts but the white was way too thin & see through.  My local Talbots had a very poor selection of t-shirts so no luck there either.  I already have 2 crew neck t-shirts from J Crew Factory (apparently I forgot that I already had 1 & bought a 2nd a while back) that are comfortable & are not see-through with a nude bra. I’ll keep looking for the elusive v-neck (hopefully without the boob pocket!).

  4. I agree with you on sticking to one time year round!  I always change our clocks before going to bed.  In preparing to move my clothes back to my walk-in closet yesterday, I tried on anything that I had not recently tried on.  If I didn’t love it, in the donation pile it went.  I enjoy donating our things to Goodwill because I know that doing so gives others jobs, and helps others have items that they might not be able to have, otherwise.  There are some things that we will see if one of our neighbors can use, since we know that money is really tight for them.  I don’t have the desire to put money in my pocket from things I no longer want.  Regarding your white t-shirt review:  I did read it before I began my chores yesterday.  I REALLY appreciate you doing it, and it helped me in so many ways.  I discovered that I like the style of a Kim Rogers tee from Belk that I have in my closet, so I am going to see if I can find a white short sleeve tee in that brand, after Lent.  It’s a rainy day in GA, which is great for me emptying 3 closets and our family room, prepping for the painting to resume tomorrow.  Have a fabulous day!

  5. Great that you will donate proceeds to charity. Oh, time change. I don’t like it. Wish we would op out in Georgia. Something else to adjust to. I like your philosophy jolynne. Just go with the flow. Hope you get that nap today.

  6. Oh, the time change! Ugh! I’ll be fine today, but Tuesday morning I’ll feel like I hit a brick wall. It always takes a couple of days before my body catches on. We had rain all day yesterday here in So Cal and today should stay pretty cloudy (but not cold, ugh) so it’s a perfect day to go through my closet. Love what you are are doing with your ebay proceeds–I hope you get some good bids! Really enjoyed your white tee post–I used to love the ones from Loft, but like I find that their quality has changed a bit and not for the better. Living in Southern California for nearly 20 years, t-shirts and short-sleeves are a huge part of my wardrobe and I like quality purchases that don’t lose their shape. Have a great Sunday, I always look forward to your Coffee Talk posts 🙂

  7. I agree at sticking to one time.  I woke up late thanks to daylight savings time and missed Church.  I love the idea of giving the money from your sales to charity.   Have a great day enjoy your nap

  8. Love your Sunday morning coffee talk posts. Thanks for all the work you put into your posts! It is appreciated. I was shopping Loft.com yesterday and almost ordered a sweater but then didn’t. Did you say something about a sweater you liked, but one of the colors had a factory mistake too small neck opening? Thanks and have a great day.

  9. I’m really impressed and grateful to you for all the work you put into researching for us. Saves so much time and your opinions are always backed with actual facts that are meaningful. I love your blog and learn something new very often. Continued success to you!

  10. I love your style and your candid words about what works, and why it works, but my heart always gets lighter reading your Sunday morning coffee talk. It is encouraging to know there is a beautiful, fabulous, stylish woman with a big audience who also is following Jesus. You have made an impact on my style and my relationship with God. I appreciate you!

  11. I agree with you 100% on the white tee – it’s all about personal preference.  It doesn’t matter if you pay $6 at Walmart or $90 at Saks Fifth Avenue – if it fits your style and requirements – then it’s a win.  😁 And your hard work is very much appreciated because you showed us what is it there.

Good for you donating the proceeds from your items to charities.  You would be justified keeping the funds yourself but if God placed that on your heart then you should do it. I know He will richly bless you for it.

I hope you have a restful Sunday.

  12. Oh yeah and … don’t even get me started on the time change.  It is so no longer necessary.  I agree with you and wish they did away with it in all of the states.

  13. Always love your blog….
Now one more reason ..giving back to
    those in need!
What a wonderful way to use what God has
    Blessed you with!

  14. I have a question. Where exactly should an ankle pant stop on your leg. Should it be above or below the ankle? Mine seem to come a little above and am wondering if I need to get a tall size. I am 5 7″. I would appreciate your comment. Thanks.

    1. Ankle pants should end somewhere around the ankle bone, as the goal of an ankle pant is to highlight the slimmest part of your ankle. Depending on your leg shape and height, you may like yours nearer the bottom of the ankle bone, or a smidge higher. Generally, slimmer legs can get away with a slightly shorter pant. This is one of those situations where I would take mirror selfies and compare. Most ankle pants in regular sizes have a 29″ or 28″ inseam. From my quick online research, it sounds like tall sizes are generally made for women 5’8″ or taller, and short or petite styles are for women under 5’4″. However, that’s just a guideline. Every woman is different, so you can always try a tall and see how you like them.

  15. As much as I hate losing an hour of sleep, I couldn’t be more excited to be back in DST! We like to exercise outdoors in the evening after my husband gets home from work. When we hit standard time in the fall it pretty much cuts our ability to get out and exercise on weekdays. I am always counting down the days until March when we go back to having more daylight in the evening.

  16. Your clothing recommendations have always been wonderful! On top of that they have been increasingly helpful & motivating to your recipients to look & live well. Your family must be very proud of you!! The white T-shirt presentation was outstanding. Thank you. Also, I totally agree about keeping the time the same year round.

  17. I would love to know how you decide what to get rid of each season. Obviously if things don’t fit or are too worn, that’s a no brainer. But how can we know what things are too dated? I’d love to hear your thought process on the things you decided to let go of. Thanks!

    1. It’s really just a gut-check. Do I love it? Do I wear it regularly? Would I be excited to put it on right now? Does it work for my lifestyle? My current weight? Do I have outfits to wear it with?

Also, with my job, I turn my clothes over a lot faster than most. People get irritated when I wear something and I can’t tell them where to buy it, so if it’s no longer for sale, I have kept it because I truly love it, it is great quality, and probably a classic that I can find something similar to link to. But that’s not going to help you, I realize.

As far as knowing if something is dated… I guess that also takes a bit of a gut check, and keeping up on trends. But at the end of the day, if you love it and feel good in it, I’d keep it!
