Coffee Talk 05.26.19

It’s been a leisurely, slow weekend around here… the perfect kind, in my opinion. I hope yours has been similarly satisfying, whether it’s been leisurely or not.

We hosted friends on Friday night, which was fun, and then yesterday I spent the entire day puttering around the house. I did some work in the morning, and I sat out by the pool with my book for most of the afternoon. I didn’t put on a stitch of makeup, and I probably didn’t burn more than 100 calories all day.

My older daughter, however, had a very productive day. She completely reorganized the kitchen pantry and several cabinets that were in desperate need of attention. I’m telling you, having teenagers isn’t all bad!

Paul grilled steaks for dinner, and then I fell asleep trying to finish my book. So yeah, all in all, a very lazy day!

I’m still working on The Seven Sisters, which is pretty good, but a little more explicit in parts than I prefer. It’s not enough to prevent me from finishing the book or reading more of the series, I just feel the need to make that disclaimer since I recommended it. In the future, maybe I’ll wait to mention books I’m reading until I’ve finished them — at least that way I can give a thorough review — but overall I’m enjoying the storyline very much.

It’s one of those that flips back and forth between the present and the past, which I always find fascinating, and it does give a little history lesson along the way, although not a lot. It’s mostly a fluffy beach read… which I’m totally down for. We don’t have too much on our agenda for today, so I’m hoping to wrap it up this afternoon. I’m at about 88%, I believe.

Beyond that, we don’t have much going on. The girls are excited to be wrapping up the school year here in a couple of weeks, and I’m sure my son is eager to start his summer camp job. At least, I know I am. Ha!

Not that he’s a problem to have at home. In fact, I hardly see him, as he’s taken his video game console to his bedroom so we don’t have to listen to it. But I will be glad for him to spend a few weeks in the great outdoors, doing things that are far more productive than perfecting his Fortnite skills… which are pretty impressive, from what his friends tell me. #thingsthatmakeamamaproud

We’ve also been working on my younger daughter’s room makeover. She’s got her new bed and bedding, curtains, and a few wall hangings; and we’re planning to get it painted for her in a couple of weeks.

It’s making me anxious to do some work on my own bedroom. We never did much beyond painting and moving our furniture in. I have 4 or 5 windows to dress, and I ordered a pair of panels and one curtain rod planning to hang it and make sure I like it before ordering the rest.

Would you believe, that was January 3rd!?!

I guess I should make sure they’re still available before we go to the effort of hanging it. If I can’t get more, it’s a moot point.

Anyway, how pathetic is that??? Usually we’re the type of people to get stuff done, but there’s something about that curtain… I guess it’s because Paul detests hanging curtains, and having bare windows in the bedroom doesn’t bother me like it doesn’t downstairs in our living areas. I’m just not in there enough, and I never think about it at a convenient time for him to help me with it. I think I’m going to put that on our priority list for tomorrow.

On that note, I better sign off here and get my run in before the sun gets too high. I’m loving how early it gets light out now, but I have to make a concerted effort to get out there before it gets too warm. Which is fine, because I like getting my exercise over with and getting on with my day, but I do have to keep an eye on the clock. If I wait too long, I end up walking more than running because the heat saps my energy.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. I assume when you say you don’t mind having bare windows in the bedroom that you still have some type of window covering like a blind. I do see some home makeover shows where bathrooms and bedrooms have large windows with no covering and it reminds me of our trip to Europe. The bathroom had a mirror on one side and large window on the other! I guess that way people passing by could get a good view of both sides! Haha!

  2. Your comment about the curtains tickles me, because my husband and I are the same way.  We moved into a house last summer and I have had curtains for the bedroom ready to hang for about three months, but we just don’t want to do it.  In our defense, we do have a ton of yard work at this house that we have been doing also.

Thanks for sharing your real life 😉.

  3. I’ll have to check out your latest book, so far I’ve always enjoyed your recommendations!  I had about the same energy level as you did yesterday!  I looked at my Fitbit steps & thought that can’t be right!  We decided to go out for a late lunch, ice cream, then more inactivity, which is totally bad, #icanfeeltheweightgain.  I’ve pulled out a red cardigan & white crops for church today, a little patriotic color going on there!  Our Sunday Schoolers always sing a few patriotic songs for the church service, they all look so cute in their red, white & blue!  Enjoy the rest of your weekend! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

  4. Sounds like a great weekend! Do you eat breakfast before you run? I’m trying to figure out walking in the morning to be consistent and wondering how I should do things. Also do you stretch before or after? Where did you learn how to stretch?

    1. No, I run on empty, lol!! I used to eat first when I was running longer distances, but I can bang out 3 or 4 on a cup of coffee. Also, I was experimenting with intermittent fasting, and you’re supposed to exercise while fasting. That’s another reason why the earlier I get out there, the better I feel.

You should always do your static stretching after exercising, when your muscles are warmed up to avoid injury. If you want to loosen up your muscles before going out (which is a good idea) you want to do warm ups that can include dynamic stretching, but go easy on the stretching part. My physical therapist taught me a short routine of dynamic stretches and warmups that I try to do before going out. Or I just walk 5 min first.

  5. Sounds like you are having the type of weekend that really doesn’t occur to often, but should.  What colors is your youngest doing her bedroom in?  How nice of your eldest to do some organizing in the kitchen for you!  It got up to 104 here yesterday, which = absolutely miserable outside and stay inside.  Walking to the mailbox was a real chore.  At 9:15 this morning, it was already close to 80, when I went out to check the trail cameras and put out more deer corn.  Have a blessed and relaxing day!

    1. 104!?! Good NIGHT!!! I will remember that when I complain about March in Philly next time. Ha!

She got a coral bedspread and she’s accessorizing with shades of teal. It’s really pretty!

      1. It’s currently 100 on our front porch, 1:15p.

The colors she chose for her bedroom are fabulous and should look so pretty together.

  6. Love your blog! I look forward to it every morning with my coffee.  I live in the Deep South and take strength training classes outside at 5:30pm. Last Thursday it was 95 degrees at 6pm!  Have a great weekend.

  7. Hi Jo-Lynne – Always look forward to your posts every day. As I walked into church this morning, all 3 ladies in front of me had on cute dresses. I’m not a dress girl but I think I need to order that Boden one(pink or yellow, haven’t decided). My hubby said, yeah you need a dress! Thank you again for your posts – love how chatty you are about your family and all the real life goings on.
