Coffee Talk 09.08.19 ☕️

Coffee Talk + My Daily Looks

Greetings on this fine Sunday morning! I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling good about getting back into routine now that Labor Day is over and September is well under way. I haven’t really been following the Dorian news, but I hope you all on the coast are staying safe and that there hasn’t been too much damage.

My weekend has been nice — not terribly eventful, but I’ve been busy enough. I wanted to do some purging around the house yesterday, but I ended up taking the girls to the mall to shop for the wedding we have coming up in October. Now that I have what I’m wearing pretty much squared away, it’s time to get them all fixed up.

It was busy. Evidently a lot of people have fall weddings they’re shopping for right now! We spent a while in Macy’s and then Lord + Taylor, where we scored a dress and shoes for R, my 8th grader. We stopped into Nordstrom on our way out to look further for C, but we didn’t find much.

Back at home, we looked at Lulus and ordered a few dresses for her to try. This was at the recommendation of some of the ladies in my FB Group, who have teenage daughters. Evidently this is a go-to resource for homecoming and prom dresses. They did have some cute things at good prices, so hopefully one will work out.

Oh, I forgot to tell y’all about Hamilton!

We did the season ticket package with Broadway Philly last year in order to be guaranteed seats for Hamilton, and then we waited almsot a year and a half for the show.

There are easier ways to get Hamilton tickets — and probably cheaper ways too, considering we missed a couple of the shows due to our schedules — but I finally got there!

C has been obsessed with Hamilton before it was popular, and she knows every word to every song. Needless to say, Thursday night was like Christmas Day for her. D also came with, but he preferred not to be in the ubiquitous Hamilton photo, so he manned the camera.

We all loved it, although it took me the first act to really get my head around it. I knew enough about it to know it was unconventional, but I still had to get in the right frame of mind. For that reason, I’d love to see it again. I expect we will someday, but not anytime soon because I looked up ticket prices in NYC and ohmyword.

So that was our excitement for the week!

This morning we’re headed to church, per our usual, and then this afternoon we’re driving down to visit my in-laws. It should be a nice day for it.

We’re having what I like to call First Fall here in Philly. This often happens in early September — we get a little taste of fall with some cooler weather and lower humidity, but it won’t last.

I’m always watching the weather because it affects my photo shoots and my running schedule, and summer is definitely returning later this week, so I’m trying to enjoy this mild weather while I have it.

It sounds like some of you in other parts of the country are experiencing record high temperatures right now… I am so sorry. Don’t worry, though. I’ll get my payback in the spring when it’s cold here in May.

I am always so jealous of you all and your early springs, but in the fall, I get to gloat.

It always comes back to the weather with me, doesn’t it?

Oh, well! I hope you all have a relaxing and blessed Sunday.

  1. Good morning – ah yes the weather. I live in south Texas and we are certainly among the people who are suffering from the atrocious heat. However, I am on my back porch listening to the birds and it is tolerable, so happy to have a little respite. I loved all the clothes  you highlighted for the week, which translates into I want to buy them all! Here’s my question for you, I have all of these items in my closet in one color or style or other – how do I justify buying another one!? I gravitate to the same things to wear as you have said you do too. On Hamilton, we saw Mama Mia for the 3rd time this weekend and I understand it now better soooo start saving! Sorry so long a message, but it is coffee talk 😏

  2. I look forward to reading your blog regularly. I’m glad your daughter enjoyed Hamilton. My husband and I went to see the show last year and I absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to see it again, but it will have to be when the prices go down a little. I’m the mean time, I happily enjoy the musical in my car during my commutes. Have a great day!

  3. You look SO excited in the photo- and super slim! I really like Caroline’s dress; I think she could wear that to the wedding, except I think you said October so maybe it will be too cold. On another note, I am desperate to find comfortable low heel pumps to wear to work. I’m a teacher and I find myself staying away from my skirts and dresses because my feet hurt at the end of the day. Do you know anything about the Everlane Day Pump?

    1. Yeah, she wants a long dress. Has her heart set on on floor-length. 🙂 Plus her sister’s dress is rather similar, but you’re right — I didn’t think about this one but it could work.

So everyone I know who has reviewed the Everlane Day Pump raves about them. I have to believe they’re very comfortable. Also look at Vionic and anything by Cole Haan is usually very comfortable.

      1. Thanks for the tip about Vionic. I haven’t tried them. I do love Cole Haan. Everlane order, here I come! It’s worth a try!

  4. What a nice family photo!  You and Caroline look so very pretty!  Sounds like y’all have a nice day ahead of you.  We are some of the unlucky ones still dealing with horrible heat.  It got up to 105 on our front porch yesterday afternoon and tomorrow the ‘feels like’ temp in Macon, which is North of us, us going to be 104, so it will be even hotter here.  We are so ready to be able to enjoy sitting on our porch, drinking coffee, chatting with friends, and watching & listening to nature.  Maybe we can do that in October.  Have a blessed day!

  5. I am ready for the Fall weather. Mid 60’s during the day, low 50’s at night. Perfect to have the window open. My air conditioning needs a real vacation. At least there is Eagles football on now. Have a great rest of your day.

  6. Great family picture!  I would love to hear any advice from you about how to dress in NYC in the fall.  My husband and I are going there in October (we’re seeing two shows! So excited, like your daughter!). Here in Kentucky we’ve been having some cool evenings and it’s so nice, even though I’m sad to think of summer coming to an end!

    1. Hey Miriam. In NYC, you can’t go wrong with denim and black and grey, if you want to fit in. But you will see everything — and some pretty crazy stuff too! People generally don’t get super dressed up for Broadway, so no pressure there either. Good walking shoes are a MUST.

  7. It’s so fun and nice to do things with the kids:) I never tire of it that’s for sure. The hurricane hit us yesterday afternoon and we have been without power since, mainly due to a downed tree. May not see it until late tomorrow ( Monday ) your daughters dress looks lovely on her:)

  8. Jo Lynne I sing with a college chorale group and last fall we sang 2 songs from Hamilton.  Our director told us later that the congregation went crazy over the music.  It was a little difficult to sing but the groul nailed it.    Does your daughter sing?   I’m glad she finally got to see the play.    Have a great Sunday.

    1. She does. She takes vocal lessons, but she is not in a choir b/c of homeschooling. I am acutally looking into a community choral group for her (and me too! I was always in the audition choirs in high school and college, and I miss it.)
