Coffee Talk 10.21.18

Greetings, friends! I hope this weekend is treating you well. After saying mine was wide open, I ended up filling it quite full. I have a way of thinking I can fit a lot more into an allotted period of time than is humanly possible, so when I saw an empty calendar, I came up with a long to-do list.

I was due for a “long run” yesterday morning (long for me these days is 4 miles, which sounds pathetic, but I’ll take what I can get!) and it was the perfect day for it. Our weather has been one of two extremes lately, but yesterday was the perfect mild fall day. It was about 55 degrees when I left for the trail at 10AM, breezy with some cloud cover. I never run as fast on the trail as I do on the road, even though it’s flat, but I still made pretty good time.

After that, I had plans to go to Nordstrom and to Kohl’s to pick up things I need for collaborations that are due this week. My daughter wanted to go with me, so we made an afternoon of it. I never did get to Kohl’s, so I guess that’s on my to-do list for today, but we did have a good time at the mall.

We ate lunch at the Nordstrom Cafe before we set out on our shopping adventure, which is always nice. Then we did manage to find everything we were looking for, but I was reminded why I never go to the mall on a Saturday afternoon. Ugh, the crowds!

She wanted to stop at Trader Joe’s on the way home, so we did, and now our freezer is stocked with all kinds of goodies that are sure to derail me from my last week of FASTer Way To Fat Loss. I was really hoping to finish strong, so I hope I can withstand the temptation.

I made stir-fry for dinner, and then while Paul, D, and R watched the Sixers in the family room, C and I went downstairs and started watching Parenthood from the beginning.

Where are my Parenthood fans??? I had almost forgotten about that show, as we’ve been watching reruns of Gilmore Girls lately, but C asked about watching Parenthood, and so we started it, and we’re both excited about watching it together from start to finish. When I watched it the first time, she was too young to care about it, so I watched alone, laughing and crying through every episode all by myself. I’m excited to share it with her, but I’ve got to figure out some clever ways to hide my tears. Why is it I don’t mind admitting I cry during every episode, but I don’t want anyone to witness it???

And speaking of the Sixers, here’s a picture from the game on Thursday night. I somehow convinced these guys to pose for a picture before we went upstairs to our seats, and I’m glad I did because I didn’t get any when we were in the stands. My family members are not fond of selfies, so I just left them alone and let them enjoy the game, but now I’m wishing we got a picture with the basketball court behind us. Oh, well. Maybe next time.

I guess I don’t have much to show you on the house front. We finally got our shutters and front door painted this week and the new lockset put on, and I ordered a wreath hanger and got my wreath hung up. I still need to get mums for the urns I bought — one has a mum in it, and the other is empty. It looks ridiculous! It’s hard to find them big enough to fill these particular urns, so I’ve just been letting it go, but I really need to get those fixed so the front of my house is complete.

In other house news, my designer came on Tuesday and brought curtain samples for the office and living room, and I had her order the ones for the office asap. I can’t wait for them to come in and get hung! She helped me with styling the etagere, and I think that’s almost finished. I still want to get one more coffee table book for stacking purposes.

We also ordered a chair and a small side table for the corner where I do my Facebook Lives, so I won’t have to move my desk chair and set my computer and props on a box anymore, and she had a recommendation for a new desk and a credenza, but I’m not sure I’m going to invest in those right away. The desk and return I have right now works fine, and there are so many things I want to do elsewhere in the house, I may just wait on that. But it would be nice to have my office complete, so we’ll see…

I’ll do a full reveal on the blog when my office is finally put together, but it will be a few weeks before the curtains and chair come in.

And beyond that, we’re working on finishing up the foyer and the family room, and I can’t wait to show you those, but it will be a little while longer. I’ve ordered a chair for the family room to replace the little white one, but that will take a few weeks to come in, and I also ordered a tray to put on top of the ottoman, but it’s backordered until mid-November. So yeah, I’m just hoping that room will be done in time for Christmas.

Well, I need to get moving here, so I’ll stop rambling. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. I love Parenthood….well, except for the last season.  It got to be a little too much.  I keep telling my daughter (she’s 35) that she really needs to watch it!  I also loved Brothers & Sisters.  It’s another binge worthy show.  Hubby and I relaxed all day yesterday…he’s been traveling sooo much for work this past month…only slept here three nights out of the last 21, and he’s out for the next 2 weeks.  But today is full….church, visiting mom (she has Alzheimer’s) and then Epcot for the Food & Wine Festival.  Finally getting fall weather today…only a high of 78 expected!!!
    Have a blessed day!

    1. Hey Tracy…. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in dealing with a mom with Alzheimer’s. It’s hard at times and I have to remind myself to be thankful she has enough money to live in a nice place with community and they take good care of her. It’s getting harder and harder to take her out though. Enjoy your day. Jo-Lynne…..loved your newsy post and picture of your family. Boy….. you sure get a lot done with regards to your house decorating. With all you’ve done it would take most people months or years.

    2. Yeah, I agree, it kind of jumped the shark in the last season. I finished it up anyway. Epcot sounds like fun! Hope your visit with your mom went well. Alzheimer’s is a horrid disease.

  2. Jo-Lynne, you do have a lot balls in the air! On your coffee table books you want —you may have thought of this but when I wanted a few more large books for my den shelves ( more for decor) I ordered some “used” ones from Amazon. The ones that are described “as new” in condition worked out nicely and less costly. Look forward to seeing more of your decor soon. Have a lovely Sunday!

  3. Good morning, Jo-Lynne!  Happy Sunday! I was an avid Parenthood viewer and really miss that show! Do you watch This Is Us? It is also terrific…another goodie for you and your daughter to enjoy together. My family loves it.

    1. I’m already a huge This Is Us fan. It seemed a little racy when it first came on, so I didn’t let the kids watch with me, but now they’re older, and it never really got too bad so I should probably start over and watch with Caroline. Not sure Becca could get into it yet.

  4. I’m glad that you enjoyed your run yesterday.  Question:  What steps do you take to keep yourself safe while running alone?  It seems that there’s no safe place for anyone, but particularly a woman, to run alone.  It was finally nice and chilly, 45, when I got up this morning.  I spent most of yesterday working my tail off, making Betty Crocker Salted Caramel cookies, which are to die for.  They are a seasonal item, I happened upon at Dollar General, so if you’re interested in them, grab them now.  We bought 8 packets of the mix on Friday because they are a hit in our little community.  And I got all of the food prepared for the bonfire last night at our lake house.  We didn’t see any of the shooting stars last night, unfortunately.  Maybe tonight, if we’re up late enough.  Have a blessed Sunday!

    1. Ginger, I also wondered about Jo-Lynne’s safety precautions while she’s out for her run. So much goes on in the news pertaining to women jogging, walking, etc., alone. Those salted caramel cookies sound delish! I purchased a premade Sea Salt Caramel Cocolate Creme Pie from Walmart and it was scrumptious! Our weather here in the Bluegrass State has also skipped fall and jumped into winter! There was a freeze warning this morning and another one for in the morning!

      1. Sherri, the pie from Wal-Mart sounds yummy.  The cookies are super easy to bake.  All you need is 1 large egg and 1 stick of softened, not melted, stick of butter.  Using a fork to mix everything together works great.  It was 31 here in south central Georgia this morning.  We love fall/winter, so we’re happy!

    2. Yeah, my mom worries about me too. 🙂 Paul worries more about me getting hit by a car — as do I. I think that’s a greater risk. I try not to run the same route all the time, run at different times, although I probably don’t vary it up enough. Most places I run are fairly well populated. In fact, since moving, I often run in my neighborhood. It’s a mile loop so I can do it 3x and get my 3 miles in. I only go to the trail on days/times when I know there will be some other people around, but it still gets rather desolate.

I dunno… I think about these things, and then I think the odds are fairly small, and the benefits to my health and emotional well being are worth the risk. I use to carry mace, but I figured just my luck, I’d end up squirting myself in the eye so I stopped. I do have my phone with me, and I can always hit the side button 3x for an emergency call if I need to.

      The cookies sound delish!

  5. Ok by the sounds of it I need to watch this show. Is it on Netflix? Love the color block cardigan you have on in one of your shots:) for some reason I though you all went to a football game lol oh well looks like fun. Have a great day

  6. Love Parenthood and thanks for reminding me about it so I can re-watch it when there’s nothing on and it’s cold and rainy out. Today we are supposed to get some sun in South Texas after two or more weeks of rain. Okay is it just me, or is anyone else having issues getting on the Nordstrom website? I can go to any other site but this one ~It just doesn’t connect? Also why is it that I have to type in my email address each time I comment ?  On Cyndi’s blog it just fills it in automatically. I always check the same my name box too. Sorry about all my housekeeping issues today. 😌

  7. I loved Parenthood!  If you are a Costco member, try there for your mums. They carry huge ones at mine in the fall. And great poinsettias at Christmas.

  8. Will have to check out Parenthood.
I agree with the comment about “This is us” tv show – absolutely love it, the characters and story line are terrific when most of tv shows are garbage. Its a clean family oriented show. “This is us” seasons 1 & 2 are on Netflix, season 3 (current) is on Tuesday nights.

Looking forward to your future Kohl’s collaboration. Its one of my fav stores and in my budget range.

    Happy Sunday!

  9. Never watched parenthood but it seems from the comments that it is a good show.  So that maybe something for later today. I need to switch out clothes to fall/winter. This weather we are having in Delaware is crazy. Its hot then its cold then it warms up some. I dont know what to wear half the time. Im off to pick up my daughter from a sleepover and take her to lunch. Maybe pop in to walmart for 1 thing haha that never happens  have a great day

    1. NickiM, hi!
I’m in DE as well! It was so windy here today! The sun was beautiful but the wind made it way too chilly to be outside 💨😮
We took a ride down to the Indian River Bridge and the waves were pounding.

      1. I went to pick up my daughter from a sleepover and i had to pass a few farms along the way. I was sure i was going to get blown off the road .  Lucky it turned out ok. L

    2. Yes, same with the weather here, of course. I keep misjudging how cold it is b/c the wind makes such a difference. I about froze on my run yesterday. It was 41 but super windy — I wore short sleeves and 3/4 pants — not a good choice! For some reason, I kept thinking I’d warm up so I didn’t go back in and add a layer, even when I ran past my house about 10 min into the run. Stupid. But then on Saturday, I wore the same outfit in 55 degrees and was hot with the sun beating on my black leggings. #cantwin

  10. Another Parenthood fan here! I may have to go back and rewatch it one of these days too. I agree w/ others who are recommending This is Us; it’s such a great show. It can be a bit emotionally draining at times, so I sometimes wait a bit to watch new episodes if I feel like I’m not up for that. I have another excellent show to recommend: God Friended Me. It’s good so far, and it’s on CBS on Sunday nights. My husband, 12 yr old son, and I all watch together every week. And one more: The Good Doctor on ABC (Monday nights). It’s our absolute favorite! The main character has Autism and is in his residency to become a surgeon.

  11. Good for you running!,,,
Be warned we had mini blizzard in Chicago
Yesterday crazy! This morning before church it
    was 26 degrees!
Will hv to check out that show since it’s too
cold here to be out walking!

    1. UGH! No thank you! I’ve only been to Chicago once, and it was June, and it was like 30 degrees and windy, and I thought I was going to DIE b/c I’d brought summer clothes. It is my only recollection of Chicago and I will always think of it as the coldest place in the world.

  12. OMG…Parenthood, the BEST!! My daughter, who is a new mom, just binged and I think she spent 2 month crying. Enjoy!!

  13. Oh JoLynne, what a wonderful place you have created for all these sweet ladies to gather and share comments and feelings. I know we all feel like good friends. Loved the blog this morning and your news.  Look forward to your e-mail everyday. Thanks for this forum. Sharon

  14. Loved Parenthood! And miss it terribly! I cried all the time watching it too. Have finally watched all of Gilmore Girls and really liked that too. Never caught that show when it was originally on for some reason. Another great show I found on Netflix is Offspring, it’s from Australia and is similar but different to Parenthood. Little more quirky but great show. Has 7 seasons I think. Love hearing your family and house updates too, have a great week!

    1. Same here, never saw GG when it aired originally. I watched Parenthood first, and then when I discovered GG, I was so excited. I’ve never heard of Offspring — I’ll look it up!

  15. I need some of your energy and motivation to get things done! I bought some new fall decorations last month and they are still sitting in the bags. I went to the mall today to make returns and it was insane. I hate to see what it looks like in a month.

Good luck on finishing strong with your program!

  16. I am on my second watching of Parenthood myself! I didn’t watch it when it was on, but went on a Netflix binge watch about a year ago and well a few weeks ago I was home with nothing to watch so started it again! LOVE that show! I’m on week 2 (3 if you count prep week) of FWTFL have you noticed results? I didn’t measure myself the way I should and am trying not to see if I see any results until week 4 is complete when I hear is when you notice…but I swear my jeans fit better this morning! 🙂

    1. I’ve definitely noticed some results but I haven’t lost as much as I wanted to, but that is not b/c of the program. It’s b/c I keep indulging in food not in the plan. I still like the intermittent fasting part tho.
