Coffee Talk 10.23.16

Well, good morning! How is everyone today?

I haven’t been sleeping well lately and it’s starting to catch up with me. I feel kind of groggy and gross inside. I tend to be a great sleeper so it really messes with me when I have a few restless nights. I used to be able to drink coffee before bed, but I think I’m getting more sensitive to that. Last night I intentionally didn’t have any, and I still didn’t sleep that great, go figure. I hope whatever this is passes soon so I can get back to feeling normal.

Yesterday started out cold and rainy and ended up getting sunny and beautiful by dinnertime. My son was occupied with band activities all day, so the rest of us decided to go out to dinner at a local bar and pub type of joint. It was good, but busy and loud on a Friday night, and when I got home, I just wanted peace and quiet. I guess I’m getting old.

We actually had a doggie sleepover last night. We watched a neighbor’s dog, just to see how it goes. She’s a similar type of dog to ours and they like to play together outside, so we thought perhaps we could exchange dog sitting services when we travel if they get along. It took them a few hours to settle down, and for a while, I thought they never would, but they finally got tired and went to sleep.

This morning they’re doing okay, except the one keeps eating the other’s food. Ha! I expect they’d work things out if they were forced to spend a few days together. It’s kind of cute having two dogs, I have to admit. Of course the kids want a second dog, but I think we’re a one dog kinda family.

Today we have our regular church activities and not much else. I’m glad to have a slower day because I was out and about most of the day yesterday and I could use some down time. I’m hoping to get back to reading Dead Wake. I picked it up at the airport when I was coming home from South Carolina, and I’m really enjoying it, but I don’t make enough time for reading in my life. I used to read every weekend, but lately I’ve found myself doing more work on weekends and letting the reading go by the wayside.

Reading is such a nice Sunday afternoon activity — well, that and a nap. Ha! They usually go hand in hand. I find I can’t stay awake to read for more than an hour or so these days. When did I become my mother??

I hope everyone has a nice, relaxing Sunday! It’s looking like it’s going to be another pretty one here in PA!

  1. Good morning Jo-Lynne,
I hope you sleep better tonight … I find that if I don’t sleep well and don’t nap during the day I will usually have a better night sleep that next night so I hope that is what happens for you 🙂
One of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to get back to reading more. Seems harder to squeeze in as my kids get older and have more activities. I have done a decent job of this but still not finding as much reading time as I would like. I have about 15 books checked out of the library right now and I just keep renewing them!! LOL. Have a good Sunday!

  2. I’m in the middle of reading One Light Still Shines by Marie Monville, who was the wife of the Amish schoolhouse shooter. I heard her speak at a women’s retreat and she was awesome. As it says on the back of her book, “My story is not about my past, but about your future.” She did a great job, both at the retreat and in the book, of taking her story and making it part of a message of God’s redemption…not just in her own life but for everyone, no matter what situation needs to be redeemed. I HIGHLY recommend it. Everyone I know who has read it can’t put it down. 3. Sleep issues are such a pain! I usually fall asleep easily but tend to be wide awake at 4 and just cannot fall back to sleep. Sometimes it’s even earlier, 3-ish.

If anyone has tips for that, I’m all ears! I would be thrilled to just make it to 5 or 5:30.

    Enjoy your quiet Sunday!

    1. I had the same issue for quite a while after hitting my mid-forties, and two things seemed to take care of it. My hormone dr formulated a combination of progesterone cream with a little estrogen for me, which I use daily, and I started drinking “magnesium tea” before bed. It’s Magnesium Calm in hot water, and it is found at the health food store. I hope it helps, if you decide to try it!

      1. Thank you! I am going to try the tea for sure!

It’s interesting what you say about the hormones. I am on hormone suppression therapy for breast cancer. When I first started the shots to suppress my ovaries I had trouble with sleep but then I seemed to adjust. As weird as it sounds, I sort of forgot that that could contributing to my current sleep troubles. It’s like my brain decides it’s wakey time and there’s just no way to relax. But then by early evening I turn into a pumpkin!

    2. That is EXACTLY what happens to me. I go to sleep fine, but I wake up at like 2 or 4 and I want to get up for the day but I know I can’t. I can usually get back to sleep but the last couple nights I was in and out of sleep from 4 to 6, having weird dreams. I hate that. I’m with you – if I can make it to 5 or 5:30, I’m good. I prefer to get up then anyway. But this 4am thing stinks!

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne,
I feel your frustration with not sleeping well! I’m usually a good sleeper and then I’ll have a stretch where I’m awake every night for a week. I find it’s getting worse with age…ha! One of the things that helps me (most of the time) is to get out of bed and go somewhere that’s cool and quiet and lie on the floor with my legs up the wall. It’s a yoga relaxation pose that helps to calm the mind and body. I stay there for about 5 minutes until my feet feel a little tingly and then go back to bed. Nine times out of ten I’m back asleep in under 10 minutes.
    Cheers! Teresa

  5. It s awfull when youre not sleeping well. I have these hot flashes now for months at night too. They wake me up! Haha, awfull! I hope you sleep well real soon!

  6. Have you ever tried the drink NeuroSleep. I found it at Walmart on the top shelf where Gatorade is. It has melatonin in it. Works for me when I can’t get my brain to shut off…

  7. Being on electronics at night within two hours of bedtime will mess up your REM sleep. You should go into REM sleep 3 times in a night. People who are on electronics before bed can go in and out of REM 16 times. Everything that has a screen and produces light used blue light because it is energy efficient Blue light tells your brain that it is daytime.

Even if people who have been on computers/cell phones/tablets/tvs stay asleep, they don’t stay in that most restful stage of sleep long enough and will still be tired in the morning. I work for an eye doctor and there is a coating that helps filter out the most harmful wavelengths of blue light It is mostly to protect the retina from the damage caused by blue light but I don’t know if it helps with sleep.

    1. Hi Pam. That is interesting. I have a really bad habit of taking my phone up to my bed and catching up on Snapchat and Facebook before going to sleep. I had heard that before but dismissed it b/c I wasn’t having issues, but now I am so… I think it’s time to reassess my nighttime routine. Thanks for the input!

  8. Melatonin has changed my life! I suffered from really bad insomnia this summer and finally tried it. It worked so well with no side effects the following day. I think I took it for 3 nights and it was just enough to break the cycle. I now only take it from time to time when I can tell I’m not going to fall asleep easily. Hope you figure out something that works well for you!

  9. I was also having problems falling asleep or waking in the middle of the night with my head always active and stressed out. The sleeping aids either pharmaceutical or home made were not really helping. I heard a friend talk about this amazing natural supplement product called Kyani Triangle of Health that does overall wonders for your health and how it helped her also with sleep issues. I researched it via google and through her website and reviewed many similar testimonials, so I decided to try it with some samples she gave me. Not only I’m sleeping (AND DREAMING!!!) better but as a side benefit it helped with constant heartburn and I’m more relaxed. I was so impressed, that I joined also as a distributor, mainly to get products for myself but also to help others.
