Coffee Talk 11.12.17

Greetings, friends! Happy Sunday! I hope y’all are having a good weekend. Ours has been both productive and fun.

We went out for dinner with friends on Friday night at a new restaurant to us — a BYO with locally sourced fare where the menu changes daily. There’s only one chef (the owner) and one server, and everything is made to order. We were there for a looooong time, as you can imagine, but it was fabulous and we can’t wait to go back.

Yesterday I got a lot accomplished. We shot a few outfits in the morning, then I cooked and photographed for a Thanksgiving recipe post I’m doing later this week, and last night we ordered sushi takeout and hung out with another set of friends.

Needless to say, I’m feeling a little bit puffy this morning! I need a few days of light eating and lots of water to cleanse my system from all that rich food.

I really want to get back to running, but it is suddenly so cold here. It was 25º when I woke up this morning! I can’t believe I’ve let myself go this long, but with the wisdom tooth debacle and now the change in weather, I’m having a hard time getting myself back out there.

This will be the first year in I can’t remember how long that I won’t be running a Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving Day. I’m kind of sad about that, but I’m not going to be up to it, and I’d rather not go at all than go and have a crappy run. Instead we’ll probably go to our high school Thanksgiving Day football game and see our son perform in the marching band one last time.

I’ll be cooking Thanksgiving dinner for just the 5 of us, and we’re having dessert with friends later on that evening. It will be a different kind of Thanksgiving Day for us, but I’m actually looking forward to it. We’re attending our big family gathering on Black Friday so it’s not like we’re missing out on that; it’s just getting scheduled a bit differently for various reasons.

I’m actually tempted to set up our Christmas tree early this year. Usually we wait till after the turkey’s been put away, but last year I set up our faux tree a week early, and I really enjoyed having it up over Thanksgiving. (We do two trees — a live one in the family room with a colorful hodgepodge of family ornaments, and then a faux tree in the living room that I call my fancy tree.)

I like having both because that way a Christmas tree is visible from pretty much anywhere on the first floor of our house, and I love that I can see the living room tree from my desk in the office.

Since Thanksgiving weekend is going to be so packed (we also have plans on Saturday) I think it makes sense to put our first tree up next weekend.

In other news, I’d really like to start doing some Facebook Live events on my Facebook Page. Basically I would just open it up to questions and probably not even have a theme, unless it gets going and I start doing it weekly or something. Then I’d probably start having topics, but to try it out, I’d keep it general. Would you guys be interested?

I will admit, it makes me nervous, but I enjoy watching other bloggers that do them, whether on Instagram or Facebook, and I get so many questions in the comments here, I feel like it would be a better way to answer some of the more specific ones. Anyway! Let me know what you think. Warning: I talk really fast. I will have to be mindful of that and really try to slooooow it dowwwwwn.

So that’s about it for me! Now that I’ve had my coffee and been chatting for a while, I’m feeling a little more like braving the cold for a walk/run this morning. Maybe I’ll do that before I start getting ready for church. I know I need it, and I keep telling myself that after I do it once, it will be so much easier the next time. I just need to stop over-thinking it and take the plunge, right!?! Stay tuned… I’ll let you know how it goes.

Take care, and have a blessed Sunday!

  1. Jolynne,  I need to add that I’ve been following you for a little over 2 years now and during this time i have witnessed a change; you have grown in your fashion sense, are more self awarene and have gone from just styling outfits to teaching about shopping and fashion. You are ready to take your grow business. I learn so much from you. Thank you for opening yourself up and sharing your gift with me.

  2. I think having an occasional Facebook Live session would be fun.  As a true southerner, maybe I can find a way to slow down your speaking on my end.  Ha!  That reminds me of my first trip to Toronto, on business, many years ago.  When I got to the register in an office supply store, the clerk said, “Are you from Georgia?”  I proudly said YES!  Turns out I have a very distinctable southern accent that I never knew I had.  I can lay it on real thick if I so desire. Now, about your tree.  Put the faux one up now!  You will be so glad you did!  Why not stretch out enjoying the most beautiful time of year for Christians!  I love sitting and looking at our lights.  Make it a blessed day!

      1. Mary, I grew up in metro Atlanta, DeKalb County, then moved to Gwinnett in my 20’s.  October 2016, we moved to a little bitty town in Taylor County (south central GA), which is half way between Columbus and Warner Robins.

    1. Funny! And I grew up in Virginia and always talked fast, never had much of an accent. (My mom is from Maine, so no southern accent.) I went away to college in Massachusetts, came back home on Christmas break and went to visit my high school choir director, and he just laughed and said, “You went away and started hanging out with the Yankees and now you talk twice as fast!” It’s bad. Sometimes people just look at me and go, “WHAT!?!?” This is why I prefer writing to speaking. OH, and I type as fast as I talk. 😉

      1. I’m from Massachusetts, just came back from Maine with hubby this past weekend.  We love, love, love Maine!  Fellow speedy talker here.  It’s definitely a Yankee thing, for sure.  Plus, the gallons of coffee don’t help slow us down:-)

  3. I think FB Live would be great! I hope you will do them and share your knowledge with us all that follow you. I really like how you show wardrobe pieces at various price points so I can decide which items I can purchase or need to put on my want/need list. And sharing how things fit you and if you keep or return them is so helpful. As I have followed you the past couple of years, I have learned so much and trust your opinion. You tell it like it is and relate it to other body types, etc.  Thank you! Looking forward to your FB live events! ????????

  4. I am newly acquainted with your website and blog, I think you will need to be careful about not getting watered down by social media. Email format feels very personal and special to look forward to your email post, Facebook has become so opinionated and bombarded with people trying to scam that I don’t pay attention to the ads and very seldom use it. For what it is worth I think email is a more personal and classier approach.
Your information is so helpful, the area I would love more information about is defining body shapes and having some direction on what works best for different types as well as the best body shaping garments that help shape a smooth look. Thank you.

  5. I have always waited until after Thanksgiving to put my tree up. This year, I feel like that is just a silly rule that I made myself accountable for. My Christmas decorations make me happy, so I am putting them up this week. Life is too short!

  6. Do the tree!

I once had to drop something off at a coach’s house and saw a tree up just after Veterans’ Day.

It was so liberating!  Now, we set all ours up before Thanksgiving … (we went from two to too many, lol) and light them up after TG dinner.

Gets the calendar holiday set so the spiritual holiday can take a more prominent place.

Will DEFinitely tune in to your FBL! Hope you do it 🙂

(PS… as a mom whose youngest started college this year… Next year is also a year of many wonderful firsts.  I can see you’re treasuring your son’s senior year…it’s such a wonder time for them.)

    Best to you….

    1. I love your idea of setting up the tree and “lighting it up” after the Thanksgiving meal!! I’m think I’m going to try that this year.

    2. I’m trying! And I am looking forward to next year too. I am so curious to see where he ends up. Still undecided. Paul is taking him out to visit Pitt again next week – he’s going to sit in on a band rehearsal and meet the RUF pastor and hopefully sit in on a class. I wish I could go but I need to stay with the girls.

  7. I’d love you to do Facebook Live. I love it when people talk fast! ???? I’d be interested in any topics and would also enjoy ones about mixing what one already has with new trends and also how to think up new color combinations that are trendy. Thanks!

  8. I think you would be great at FB live. You are so good at expressing yourself and truly have a passion for fashion and sharing what you know with us. I recently started watching a resale shop that I shop at on FB live (Clothes Mentor) but the girl that show us the new items does not do a good job of describing the item and sometimes forgets to tell us the brand and the size…Duh! She does always mention the price which is helpful on some of the high end designer items and they are always willing to put items on hold for us. Its fun to watch and see what new cool new things they got in for the week but I think the sales girl needs a bit of training and enthusiasm and you could certainly show her how it’s done!

  9. I definitely feel the change toward holiday season now too. Lots of busy weekends from here on out; so much fun! Last night my husband and I went out to dinner with friends to a “new restaurant to us” as well. The location is great (right on the water in the harbor), but my oh my, the service was sooooo slow and the food not that great. Good company and Cabernet though! ????????

I’ve been busily Christmas shopping and trying to get my shopping all done by Thanksgiving so I can truly enjoy the seasonal fun and blessings over the next two months with less stress.

I like your Instagram stories, so I’d be open to watching you do a FB live as well.

  10. I love to listen to “fast talkers” as I feel like you get a lot more information out then a “slow talker” so I would be happy to watch your facebook live shows.  It is also great way to get to know you as well.  I already feel like we are friends and that is just by reading your blog.  Looking forward to your shows!

  11. I’d certainly participate in a FB Live post if you did one. Hopefully this Texan can keep up if you talk fast – LOL.

  12. I’m not on Facebook for various reasons. Will you still be answering questions on your blog posts? I always pop back to read your responses.
I think putting your tree up early is a great idea. Where do all these rules originate that we believe we need to live by? Putting your tree up early, before you get too busy with Christmas shopping, engagements and entertaining, takes away some stress later on. Plus, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour longer. I used to wait until mid December to put up my tree but now I do it mid Nov.
We have a local restaurant that is much the same – he is the cook and she serves. The seatings are staggered to allow her to get one order in before the next customer arrives, cash only and the food is fantastic. Pricey but we love it for special occasions or just because……

    1. Oh, the blog will stay the same!! Absolutely. This would just be an extra thing I’d do — and I’m not sure I’d even do it regularly.

This restaurant is cash only too, and would you believe, we forgot cash. GAH! Fortunately our friends could cover us.

  13. Jo-Lynne- Thank you for all you share and for just being YOU! I learn so much and yes- I would love to have you do a Facebook Live! I always look forward to your posts! Have a blessed Sunday and enjoy your week!

  14. I love the idea of FB Live! As for your run, someone once told me, “try it for five minutes and if you’re miserable stop, then it wasn’t meant to be!” I’ve yet to only get out there for five minutes!????However, bundling up in the cold to run is miserable so I feel you! We just put our artificial tree up tonight and I couldn’t be happier! I always think the season is too short to contain all that joy and happiness, why not extend the season?

  15. Wow!!!  So many people ready to do their tree already.  I’m still trying to get organized to host Thanksgiving.  So much and Christmas coming too fast.  I never decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving weekend.  Try to live in the present, as all the stores etc. push each holiday too fast.  I remember when I was a kid, the malls weren’t even decorated for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving.  I treasure the memories of Christmas back then…..60’s and 70’s.  Great time to grow up with a slower life.  🙂  Thanks Jo-Lynne for sharing your life.  Its fun to read about your weekends and all you do.

    1. Yeah, I have always felt that way too. LOVE that Nordstrom doesn’t decorate till after Thanksgiving. But since putting our tree up early last year, I am changing my mind, lol. I felt like it actually helped me be less stressed and enjoy the season more because the work was done and I could enjoy it for longer, so my opinion is changing a bit… but of course to each her own! 🙂 Also, we are traveling for Christmas, so our season to enjoy our home being decorated is even shorter than normal. But I know what you’re saying. It seems like it keeps coming earlier and earlier.

  16. Almost a week late seeing this. We have been in Maine with my husband, who was there on business. LOVE the idea of FB live. I might even get back on FB to participate! I am from the South, but we are likely moving to the Northeast so I need to get used to the fast talking.
