Coffee Talk 05.28.17

Hello, friends. Happy Sunday! It’s a beautiful one here in Philly. In fact, we’ve been having gorgeous spring weather for much of this week. We often complain that it switches abruptly from winter to summer here, but we are currently enjoying that gorgeous in-between weather where you can have the windows open and enjoy being outside without being too hot or too cold. It’s absolute perfection.

So there it is, your daily weather report from the Philadelphia suburbs, ha! I don’t know why I always feel the need to share my current weather situation, but it really does impact my overall mood and of course helps determine what to wear — which is relevant, I guess!

There’s not much to say this week. I’ve spent the entire week at home, and my vertigo is subsiding, but verrrry slowwwwly. What I have is labyrinthitis, the inflammation of the inner or middle ear as a result of a common cold. I had a cold a couple weeks ago and the doctor said mine is the classic presentation. There are not meds to make it go away, but they did prescribe Antivert to help deal with the symptoms while it runs its course. The medicine made me feel worse than the vertigo, so I only took it twice.

I appreciate all the suggestions on exercises, etc. Since this is due to inflammation rather than those crystals being displaced, I’m not sure the exercises would help, and I’m actually afraid of messing them up if they’re where they belong, so I’m just waiting it out and trying to let my body rest. I’ve been laying down for a few hours every afternoon, which definitely seems to help. Otherwise my symptoms get worse throughout the day.

My doctor said if vertigo comes on gradually, it tends to go away gradually, and conversely, if it comes on suddenly, it usually goes away suddenly. I’m on the gradual track here, so it’s just a matter of being patient and waiting it out. The weird thing is, I have normal energy, so it’s hard to sit still and slow down, which I know I need to do.

For the record, I don’t mean to sound like I’m complaining. I’m just sharing what’s going on in my life. I have no complaints. I know people fighting for their lives right now. This is nothing… a blip. No biggie. But it’s definitely impacting my life at the moment so I’m sharing what’s going on, which is what I do.

So who has fun plans for tomorrow? I was thinking it would be nice to go to a local Memorial Day parade — we used to do that years ago, but we would drive over to my husband’s hometown and go to their parade with his parents. They knew half the town, and it was always fun. Here, we wouldn’t really know anyone, and my kids are probably too old to enjoy it so we will likely stay put. Paul picked up some steaks to grill for dinner, and we always enjoy that.

A few of you asked for the mojito recipe I mentioned in my last email. You can find that HERE. it used to be on the front page of Google when anyone searched “mojito recipe” and I got so much blog traffic from it. I guess it fell from grace and now it’s on page 3 so people rarely see it, but I used to get emails from friends all over the country saying they googled mojito recipe and found mine. We would always get a kick out of that.

Sheesh, for not having much to say, I sure found plenty. That is usually the case once I get going. I hope you all have a blessed Sunday!

  1. I would love to try your mojito recipe! I actually just tried one for the first time while we were on vacation earlier this month and I loved it! I rarely drink alcohol and almost never like cocktails, but I really enjoyed these. Is there an alternative to using a muddler?

Glad to hear the vertigo is subsiding. I don’t believe I have ever experienced it, but it sounds awful. And for the record, I’ve never thought you complain too much. I appreciate that you keep it real and don’t pretend everything is perfect when it’s not. Too bad people can be so petty that you have to have a disclaimer. :/

  2. I have never considered what we read as a complaining. I see it as you sharing your life. I also think many of us see parallels to our life so we know we’re in good company;) No need for you to justify anything in my book. Keep on sharing and hang in there with the vertigo. Did the doctor mention your flying had any contributing factor? Sometimes when I fly a lot I feel like that for weeks after. I have suffered with ear issues my whole life though. But no complaints!

    1. I did wonder about that – b/c I had vertigo for a month after a catamaran ride in Costa Rica a few years ago. I am guessing it’s a combo of the two. Mine wasn’t this bad that time – I could drive at least. I also had an inner ear infection about 20 years ago that had me puking with every movement. It was HORRID. Antivert at least helped me stop puking, but I was flat on my back in bed for 2 weeks. All that to say, this could be worse, but it could be better. Haha! I am obviously prone to it.

  3. I also sometimes get vertigo from inflammation of the middle ear. Acupuncture works wonders for me. There is a place off Creamery Road in Skippack that I went to. I would leave there and the vertigo would be gone, it was amazing. I don’t want to put the name of the place here, but if you’re interested, you can email me. Take care!!

  4. Jo-Lynn,
I’ve had the exact same illness. it was terrifying as I could not tell if my feet were firmly on the ground as the world spun around for about three weeks ! I too told everyone afterwards as to save them the worry if it would happen to them. Rest is so important so you can heal ! Bridget Jones #3 is on Netflix if you need to rest- I loved it !!

  5. Yes, things can always be worse, but, its OK for you to feel bummed about what’s affecting you these days. I enjoy hearing about you, the family, and fashion…in that order, actually! I hope you feel back to normal real soon. xoxo

  6. I believe we all love you for your honesty and openness, in addition to your wonderful fashions. And yes, if it is not a crystal issue you are wise not to do those crystal maneuvers. I am still working on my crystal issue with my physical therapist but it seems to be improving. I seem to be prone to my crystal issue causing my dizziness. But it is good that your doctor identified your problem from the inflammation from your cold and you know it will go away. Your openness about your problem has helped me be more courageous and patient with my similar ( although from a different cause) problem with dizziness… so thank you❤️

  7. I love that you just sit down and have an every day conversation with us. I think you’re the genuine thing.
If I didn’t know you were from Philly, I’d think you were Canadian. We’re always talking about the weather, as it changes so drastically. Lol

  8. Jo-Lynne , I love coffe talk , I always miss it when you don’t get to post one and I don’t see any complaints you are just telling us about your week so you go girl!!!! . I am really glad you are feeling better and hope you improve more this week . Have a blessed Sunday and HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!!!

  9. Happy Sunday and Memorial weekend! I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather and feeling a bit better. After this message I am heading straight to your mojito recipe! I have mint plants and I’m always looking for a good drink recipe!
I have an off topic question for you. Sorry! I have been searching and searching for a cute denim dress and I’ve ordered and returned at least 5 already 🙁 do you have one that you love? I’m finding they are all so boxy and loose, which is not flattering at all. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time and enjoy the steaks!

  10. My husband and I are “weather bugs”,as well! I am worthless on cloudy days! Hope your vertigo is on its way out and you can start the summer feeling great!

  11. Love your Coffee Talks! Hope you are feeling better every day. We are going to a classic rock cover band concert later today. We love to people watch! Hope you have a restful weekend 🙂

  12. I love your weather reports! My family calls me “Gina on the Scene” with my news & weather reporting! Sure hope that vertigo goes away sooner than later. I don’t think you complain at all, you just tell things how they are & to use that well worn phrase “just keeping it real”!! Even though I’m old enough to be your mother, I can relate to you & what’s going on in your life because I’m what I call a “stay at home Grammy”! I’m more than willing to help our working daughters by picking up the slack where they could use some assistance! So grab another Mojito & enjoy the rest of the weekend! Can’t wait to see what you & Cyndi have in store for us tomorrow!

  13. You probably don’t want to hear one more comment about vertigo, but….. I have suffered from it as well, on and off for the past 7-8 years. When I had my first bout with it, I was given all kinds of tests from an MRI to blood tests, and the conclusion from one doctor was that they’re not really sure what causes it, but they thought in my case it was from an inflammation in the inner ear and they prescribed Antivert for the dizziness and Xanax for the anxiety caused by it. Like you, I hated the way I felt from the antivert (made me really sleepy too) and I just don’t like taking medication so rarely used the xanax. After consulting with a holistic doctor however, I believe that hormones play a big factor (perimenopause is tough for some women!). I increased my magnesium and vitamin c and it really helped a lot.

Enjoy your weekend and hope you slowly regain your mobility. 🙂 As a teacher, I’m at the year-end stretch and working on report cards all weekend. 4 more days until summer vacation begins!!

    1. That is very interesting, and I’m sure I’m periomenopausal. I’ll talk to my doc – they are holistic, and I am supposed to follow up with them. I went to Urgent Care last week to diagnose this.

  14. Thanks for sharing your life. It helps keep the blog real and we know you have struggles like the rest of us. I appreciate that about Cyndi too. I sure hope you get to feeling better real soon. Enjoy your day tomorrow….Memorial Day. 🙂

      1. It was Jameson Black Barrel whiskey, a raspberry liqueur, lemon lime soda and fresh mint with a twist of lime. We ate at a Scotch./Irish pub. Home made soda bread with honey butter, fried Reuben eggrolls (sounds odd I know but delicious) for an appetizer.

  15. Sorry about the vertigo. I’ve had it a few times with migraines or viruses, but it always goes away once I’m feeling better. Hang in there!

  16. I really appreciate you opening up and sharing what is going on in your world. Isn’t that what friends do! And I don’t have much knowledge on vertigo, so you broadened what I know. It sounds like something very aggravating to deal with, especially since it’s one of those things that just has to work its course.
It’s sunny & already in the 70’s here. We could have storms later today, but since we don’t have any special plans, that’s okay. The plants need the rain.

  17. I hope you’re feeling better soon! I love your Coffee Talk posts! (And I, like the other ladies, don’t think you’re a complainer!) The little peeks into your life make you “real” to us! 🙂

  18. Could you tell me again what brand and color your nail polish is? I know you use two colors but I can’t find where you told it before on the blog. Thanks.
