Coffee Talk #OldSchoolBlogging Vol. 1

coffee talk

It’s a sunny Saturday morning and as usual I’m up with the birds. Got my coffee, the house is quiet, and I thought I’d do some old school blogging and just chat. I’m going to try to do this every Saturday, actually, for those who miss the chit-chat.

So I kicked my boot to the curb.

buh-bye

It felt so good! I literally threw it into the yard.

When I called my doc and told him I wasn’t feeling any better, and if anything, my foot pain was getting worse, he told me to come in. He was expecting that I’d be getting relief by now (2 weeks in) so he told me to ditch it.

I’ve already been in physical therapy for a year (yes, a year!!!) and tried just about everything under the sun to heal this thing. The only thing left is surgery to “release the tendon” (he’s not a fan unless it’s a last resort because it can cause pain on the other side of the foot that in his opinion is even harder to treat than PF) or these injections that stimulate the body to heal. One is a PRP injection, where they actually take your own plasma and inject it into the area, or a stem cell injection, which comes from a donor, and basically does the same thing. Both are designed to stimulate the body to heal and both have about a 50-70% success rate, which isn’t instilling me with much confidence, given everything else I’ve tried and how poorly I’ve done with other treatments.

I asked his opinion about acupuncture, and he was not opposed to me trying it but hasn’t had much experience with it either. I appreciated his attitude, and I do think I’m going to give that a try first. It seems like I have nothing to lose, yes? I already can’t run, or even exercise, really, and the injections sound horrible. I might as well try this first. I have a few local recommendations to go on so I’ll look into that next week.

Meanwhile I’m trying to take it easy and wear sensible shoes and wait it out. But hey. At least they match!

In other news, my son went to the 8th grade dance last night. Evidently it’s a pretty big deal. Sort of like a graduation celebration. I am in total and complete denial that he’s going to high school next year. But isn’t he a handsome little guy?

He’s not so little anymore, I guess. I love this picture my husband snapped of him showing something on his phone to his sister and her friends. They were all heckling him as he came out of the house as only sisters can do.

I’m looking forward to a laid-back weekend, catching up on my latest novel and doing some video editing. I recorded 4 or 5 videos yesterday. I have to do this on the days I actually shower and put on makeup, as those days are few and far between right now. It’s really hard for me to get motivated when I’m not exercising. I feel like such a slug.

I got my newest Stitch Fix box (it was a success this time, I cannot WAIT to share it with you!!) and my May Glossybox (video to be posted this morning over on my YouTube channel) AND my latest Stella & Dot order. So lots to share!

So that’s it for me. I hope you have a lovely, relaxing weekend planned. Get some sun and enjoy your family!

  1. It’s good to read just a chat this morning. (Or afternoon for me.) I have not followed many of my favorite blogs for awhile — somehow I lost everything in my reader and couldn’t get it all back. Sooo, I decided to just sit down and browse a bit and here YOU are — one of the first blogs I ever regularly read. You even designed my first (of two, heh) blogs. Feels like I’m in touch with an old friend. 🙂 I’ll be sticking around…

    1. Oh Marianna, so glad to “see” you!!! My blog has evolved, definitely become more of a lifestyle magazine with a few personal posts thrown in. Although it’s always me and my usual banter. 🙂 Are you still blogging???

      1. Became way distracted when our fourth (!!) of five grandchildren was diagnosed with a heart issue — open heart surgery at 5 days old. Very thankful for Johns Hopkins and a wonderful staff there. She is now four months old and will be having another open heart procedure at the end of June or early July. Plan to be in Maryland to help with her two older siblings (3-1/2 and 2). So The Heart of the Matter has a new meaning…but I haven’t blogged there for awhile. I recently started a new blog — speaking of the grandchildren — to give me a place to brag, think, adjust. This is a new stage of life for ALL of us. (Glad you remembered me!)

  2. In all your efforts to make your foot stop hurting, has anyone tried to release the attached tendons above?? Quads and down the leg itself. I’ve had some problems with my left foot and when my trainer does this it gets better. Just a thought…. You may have already tried this. Have a great day. Love your blog.

  3. Boo that your foot isn’t getting any better! I hope and pray you find a solution and healing soon! My kids are only 9 & 7 but OMG where has the time gone! I love your videos btw! I do not typically stay still long enough to watch videos even my own close friends but I DO watch yours! 🙂

  4. Just wanted to encourage you about your foot. My sis is a nurse for a stem cell processor and works with orthos who do large complicated back surgeries. Your own stem cells are very effective in speeding up the healing and the recovery time is shorter. Hang in there. This too shall pass!

  5. Sorry your foot isn’t better. Do consider acupuncture! I had a serious hand injury from a fall while hiking. Tore the ligament from the bone and ruptured the capsule surrounding the joint. I spent six months with intensive hand therapy. I got the same “don’t know much about it” response about acupuncture. I hadn’t done it before but decided to try. It was wonderful! I was amazed how much it helped improve my range of motion, reduce edema and improved overall movement. I went in with an open mind and feel like it was a great adjunct therapy. Give it a try….it might help!

  6. I keep hoping you’ll say your foot issues are over, that they’ve found a way to heal without surgery or painful procedures! Very depressing when you have to stop running (or whatever activity) due to pain like that. (hugs)

  7. I’m sorry you’re still having trouble with your foot. Have they looked at your low back and pelvis? Lots of times, foot issues come from this area! What about a gait analysis? Good luck!

    1. Yeah, they’ve definitely checked out those areas. At a time we thought my back was affecting it and PT for my back seemed to help but after a while it came back anyway. Very frustrating.

  8. I’ve not tried acupuncture but my MIL uses it sometimes for pain. And it sounds like it’s worth a shot.

My youngest is 18 and I’m turning my 22 YOs room into a grandchilds room. Of course, as soon as I’m finished he’ll probably be back home. Good think he likes purple cuz that’s what it’s going to be.

I’ve apparently been living under a rock and just really caught onto Stella and Dot. I can’t figure out a way to find a rep that lives close to me so I can see the pieces up close.

  9. I laughed at the picture of your boot thrown in the grass! I’m sure it’s so frustrating that your foot isn’t getting better. Your son does look very handsome – hope he had fun at the dance! Have a great weekend!

  10. So…I’m sure you are tired of advice from people who don’t know anything (like me) but I just want to say you have nothing to lose with alternative therapies like acupuncture. Regular doctors do not usually endorse non-western therapies…but that does not mean don’t try them. 🙂 My hubby was flat out with back pain for the majority of two years. We tried everything. Lots of hopes up and then dashed when it didn’t work. Finally, a very wholistic chiropractor changed his life by treating him structurally, emotionally and nutritionally at the same time. Same chiropractor has seen my daughter who no longer struggles with migraines. I was going to suggest a chiropractor to you…they don’t just do backs. Just a thought. Hope it is resolved soon. Hang in there!

  11. Love your articles, website, blogs….everything! Stumbled on your website a few weeks agp looking for a mojito recipe for a neighborhood party i was having and signed up to follow you. Its like finding another good friend! I love all your topics and your fun writing style! So sorry to hear about your PF injury too. Thats no fun. My son (also just graduating 8th grade) had it so bad he had to quit CC and track. Which got him depressed. But, God closes a door and opens a window….he joined a community crew team and is having an incredible experience and is hooked. No foot pain either now. I would try the acupuncture for sure before the other options and also google the shock therapy article about PF, that seems like another option for people who found no relief from other treatments too. Hang in there! Keep up the great stuff your doing and always keep an eye out for the window when your blue!

  12. It was great to read a chatty blog post about what’s going on with you, although I am sorry your foot isn’t improving. I hope acupuncture works for you – I had a rotator cuff injury last year that was threatening to turn into a frozen shoulder – I tried a variety of therapies without much relief. My chiropractor suggested acupuncture and I found it very effective. Now I’m pain free and it’s great!

  13. Oh man I can’t imagine! I just got new running shoes and my feet are killing me this must be terrible. Definitely try the acupuncture. My colorist has major wrist problems from her job and she she’s a chiropractor and acupuncturist regularly. Have you tried essential oils yet? I’m using it to treat almost every ailment my family has externally and internally. So far we love it.

  14. Hey Jo-Lynne, I had the PRP injections done on both feet coupled with the topaz needling technique done at Paoli back in November 2012. I’m also a runner and have been dealing with this injury for nearly 3 years. Surgery didn’t fix me but certainly improved things; feel free to email me if you like!
