Coffee Talk 09.04.16

Happy Sunday, friends! I am enjoying my long weekend, how about you??

weekend I love you

Yesterday we were up and out early for a couple of photo shoots, and then we even fit in one more last night. The sky in our ‘hood was beautiful, so I did some quick touch-ups on my make up and threw on an outfit, and we got some really cool shots.

I almost feel like I should apologize because everything I’ve photographed so far is jeans! I mean, I have a variety of jeans. Haha! I’ve styled skinnies, bootcuts, jean shorts, and colored jeans… but no dresses or skirts yet. I have ordered quite a few, and I can’t wait for them to get here. I’m hoping some of them work out. In real life, I probably wear a skirt or dress less than 5 times the entire fall and winter season, but I do want to integrate some into my blog content, so I promise, they’re coming!!!

I actually need help with how to style skirts, so I’m really looking forward to the Adore Your Wardrobe course 2. In fact, the fall AYW courses open TODAY!!

Course 1 focused mostly on pants and tops, and course 2 is going to go into skirts and dresses. I do okay with dresses. I know what works for me; I just don’t enjoy wearing them or feel the need to very often, but I really struggle with skirts. I feel like fall is a good time for skirts, so I’m looking forward to learning how to style them to best fit my body type.

If you wanted to take Adore Your Wardrobe last spring and didn’t get to, make sure to sign up today for the new fall session because space is limited.

So if you’re wondering . . .

What is Adore Your Wardrobe?

AYW

Adore Your Wardobe is an eCourse run by my friend Kelly of Redefined Mom. I’m always saying that the key to great style is balance and proportion, but what does that mean for YOU? I can show you how it works for me, but we are all different shapes and sizes, and what works for me may not work for you.

I’m learning as I go, and I enjoy sharing outfit ideas, sales, trends, etc., but when it comes to figuring out what works for YOU, I’m not your gal. Kelly is.

Do you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear?

Kelly Snyder from Redefined Mom was in the same predicament. But one crucial revelation changed her fashion-life forever…

Fashion wasn’t art. Fashion was science, math, proportion, and balance. And now, she is on a mission to demystify fashion for other women, transforming the way they think about, buy, and put together outfits with the Adore Your Wardrobe course.

It is brilliant. Truly.

From taking this course, I learned SO much about dressing to flatter my individual body type. In fact, I learned straight away in Lesson 1 that I didn’t even KNOW my own body type! All my life I thought I was an apple or a carrot (inverted triangle) when in fact I’m a curvy girl. I had no idea!!!

This time around, Adore Your Wardrobe has two tiers.

  • The BOUTIQUE tier will include the written and video course materials, plus worksheets and be priced at $79.
  • The DESIGNER tier will include the written and video course materials, exclusive Facebook group membership which offers personalized input and direction as students navigate the course, and Facebook LIVE events where Kelly will answer questions and give direct feedback to members. The DESIGNER tier will be priced at $149 and limited to 200 participants.

I will tell you right now that the personal coaching in the designer tier is WELL WORTH the extra investment. I consider myself pretty fashion savvy, but fashion doesn’t come naturally to me. I’ve been learning over the past few years as a fashion blogger, and I’ve come a long way, but I’m still not an expert.

Kelly uses science and math to help you determine your body type, and based on that, she has put together a set of rules that guide you to choose pieces that flatter your individual shape and how to put them together in the most flattering way. She guides you through a step-by-step process that is tried and true that truly transforms the way you think about clothes and put outfits together.

I “binge watched” Kelly’s course 1 in a couple of days, and I learned a ton, but the personal coaching from the private Facebook group took it all to the next level — not just for me, but for the other participants. I watched as Kelly and her team of experts (personally trained by her) gently guided and coached the participants — with tough love at times — to really understand the course materials and trust the process.

The written and video course materials are fantastic, but they simply cannot replace the personal feedback and input you get in the designer tier. Some people didn’t even have their body type correct until they had Kelly’s help, so I wouldn’t really want to do this without that personal feedback. As you can tell, I highly recommend investing in the DESIGNER tier. That said, if the BOUTIQUE tier is all your budget will permit at this time, go for it. It is fantastic. The course materials alone were a game changer for me.

I know it’s a big investment and so does Kelly, so she offers a sneak peek so you can get an idea what the course is like. Click here and then click on GET FREE EPISODE INSTANTLY to get her Rule of Four Episode for free.

Rule of Four is stylist’s secret formula for how to make an outfit look “put-together”. It’s a formula that you can use for accessories, patterns and layering, so you can make your own “Pinterest-Worthy” outfits.

That episode alone changed how I get dressed and put outfits together every day.

I feel like my ability to style my outfits has improve 10-fold since taking this course, and if you’ve been following my blog for a while, I am sure you can attest to the success of Adore Your Wardrobe.

I apologize if this all sounds super salesy on a Sunday morning, but registration opens today, and space is limited, so I didn’t want to wait till tomorrow to share it with you. I wouldn’t tell you about it if I didn’t love it and believe in it so much.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming…

So this week, as y’all know, has been a bit of a doozy, but it’s in the past, and I’m getting excited for fall. I always feel like fall officially starts the Tuesday after Labor Day, even though I know the calendar says Sept 22.

I feel like last week was our “dress rehearsal” of sorts. It was bumpy, but we needed the practice. This week feels more like the official beginning of the school year and all that entails.

I think (hope) that both of my sickies will be able to go to school on Tuesday. R’s on the mend, but D is still down and out, although he seemed to be perking up a bit yesterday afternoon. C received her computer and a letter from her academic advisor at the cyber school with login information and all sorts of other details, so it looks like she’ll be getting started this week as well.

It’s actually felt quite fall-like this weekend. It got warm during the day, but mornings and evenings were quite cool, and there was a breeze so we were able to keep the windows open. It’s going to get hot again this week, but that’s okay. I am not quite ready to see the warm weather end.

This is my favorite time of year because we have the predictable routine of the school year, the excitement of “back to school” hasn’t worn off yet, and the weather is usually quite pleasant. My mood pretty much depends on the weather, can you tell??? I think I mention it in about every blog post.

Yesterday I spent most of the day working on bookkeeping and packing up returns. It’s definitely one of the least glamorous parts of my job, but it must be done, and there is something very satisfying about cleaning out my closet and getting my “books” organized. I have an accordion file where I keep all of my shopping receipts, and I record all of my purchases and returns on a spreadsheet. It’s a tedious process, but it’s the only way I know to keep track of everything. Sometimes I wish there was a handbook or a manual for blogging, but we’re all pretty much winging it and figuring it out as we go.

I never did get my fall stuff out of the attic, but thankfully I have tomorrow for that. I also want to list some things on @shopjolynnescloset. I know, it’s pretty barren at the moment, but I’ve been clearing out a bunch of summer stuff that I plan to list, and I have a feeling that when I get my fall stuff out, there will be more things I am willing to part with to make room for the new.

It’s hard to believe that last year at this time, I was just testing out the waters of full-time fashion blogging. In a way, I feel like I’ve been doing it for much longer than a year, and in another way, I feel like I’m still learning. But of course, that’s normal. We’re always learning, no matter how long we’ve done a job. My entire blogging career — all 10 years of it — has been a constant evolution. Blogging is still such a new space, and it changes daily. It takes a lot of flexibility and an eagerness to learn to keep up with it, but I thrive on change and enjoy the fast pace, so it’s a great fit for me.

I probably over share about what goes on behind the scenes, but I don’t ever want to pretend like it’s effortless because it’s not. No job is, of course, but with blogging, there seems to be an expectation to keep a smokescreen in place and pretend like it’s all fun and games. I realize a little mystery is a good thing, but I also want to be transparent about the work that goes into it.

I appreciate you guys so much, and I couldn’t do this without you, so thanks so much for tuning in and for sharing your thoughts and encouragement an even constructive criticism from time to time. It’s the community I’ve built here and all of your support and encouragement that keeps me going day after day.

With that, I’m off to get a run in while it’s still nice outside. It’s 58 degrees this morning — perfect running weather! Then I have nursery duty at church and hopefully some time to read and relax this afternoon.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. Have a blessed Sunday Jo-Lynne! I would have thought you had been doing this particular blog for years! I truly appreciate you sharing some of the behind the scenes aspects. I had no idea what all is involved, and now I respect and appreciate what you do even more.

    God bless!

  2. Love the idea that fashion is science, not art – makes it seem less intimidating! Do you know if you can purchase past sessions? I also live in jeans or shorts, and have no interest in dresses or skirts. At age 49, I have decided I will wear what I like and feel good in, not what is in style! But do want to look put together. Love your blog!

    1. Sorry, I was confusing, talking about course 1 and 2. Course 2 is only offered to those who have completed course 1. All the links in this post are for course 1 – you just choose between Boutique (written materials and videos) and the Designer (facebook group and personal advice from Kelly and her team.)

  3. Thank you for your transparency. It does appear as if your life is all glamour. 🙂 It’s nice to know you’re “normal”. lol! This AYW sounds wonderful and like something I really need. I’ll definitely look into it. Do you mind sharing, how tall are you? Everything you post looks so good on you. My daughters are the same, but they’re 5’9″ and 5’10”. When I try the same styles it always looks frumpy on my 5’6″, more curvy frame.

    1. I’m only 5’5″. 🙂 I know what you mean, I look at all these waif thin 25-y/o fashion bloggers and they look awesome in everything (or so it seems) and I would look dreadful in half of it. It really does help when you figure out what style of clothes work best for your unique shape. Little details like proper shirt length and the right shape pant leg matter a lot. And trust me, there is very little glamour in my life! Ha! It’s pretty mundane. If it weren’t for fashion blogging, I’d live in one pair of jeans and about 3 t-shirts, lol!

  4. Jolynne,
I know you have gone through the course. Is there room in her fashion rules for a simple jeans and tshirts girl? I’m really not into big chunky statement necklaces and lots of patterns. I tend to pick out a cute top, a pair of jeans, a nice pair of ballet flats, and some simple bracelets, rings, maybe a necklace, and simple, but pretty earrings. If I pick a tshirt it is usually one with a little more visiual appeal like this one from Nordstroms (https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/pleione-split-neck-mixed-media-tunic-regular-petite/4484099?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=PINK%20SMOKE). According to her rules though, that wouldn’t count as a point. I don’t want to pay $ for a course that doesn’t fit in with my personal style.

    1. Absolutely! Don’t get hung up on points… that is just one lesson, and it is towards the end of the course. Plus it’s just a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. The bulk of the course is about is how to define your unique body type and how to dress your body with the proper fit and proportion, finding the right shirt length, neckline, pant length and rise and style, so much! It’s very individual and the point is to make the most of your personal style, not to fit into any specific style mold. I hope that helps!

  5. I tried to sign up for the boutique level course, but the link kept taking me to the designer level. I’d like to start with the boutique level. Do you have any idea how I can sign up for the boutique level? Thank you!! 🙂

  6. I’m sorry JoLynne. I was so excited about the Adore your Wardrobe course, that I commented with a question before reading your entire blog. I started following you about a year ago. Actually it was probably mid October of last year. I’m so surprised that you’ve only been a full time fashion blogger for a year. You’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know! I love that you share the behind the scenes stuff. It’s part of what makes you so authentic. You are so relatable, and write like you’re writing to your friends. Thank you for all that you do. You’re truly a gift to us all! 🙂

  7. Hello, friend!! I haven’t been reading blogs regularly lately because I’ve been writing, but it’s so fun to check in every now and then and find that things are going well for you. I love your Sunday morning posts–it really does feel like we’re hanging out together (and wouldn’t that be fun?!).

I moved my girl out to Philly last weekend (the one before Labor Day), but wasn’t able to get in touch because we were BUSY–four trips to Home Depot and two different Ikeas. It was a crazy few days, but now she’s settled and seems to be doing great so far. I’ll definitely be back! 🙂

    1. I totally get it! I have some friends who did the college drop off thing recently, and it definitely sounds like a busy weekend! I’d love to get together on one of your visits tho!!
