Coffee Talk + What I Wore

Happy St. Paddy’s Day, friends! Does anyone have fun plans for today?

Not being Irish, we never made a big to-do over this day. I didn’t grow up eating corned beef and cabbage or Irish soda bread, although of course I always tried to wear a little bit o’ green so I didn’t get pinched at school. Now that I live in Philly, I can’t help but get caught up in the fun.

I used to run the St. Pat’s 5K in downtown West Chester on St. Paddy’s Day weekend, and that was always a blast because most people would dress up and the bars were always open afterwards. Nothing like drinking a beer at 11am after running three miles, ha! (I don’t even like beer, so I would just marvel at those who could do that.)

This year, I didn’t sign up for the race because I’ve been off my game a bit. I haven’t run much lately due to the weather, traveling, and generally being busy during those morning hours when I prefer to run. I’ve also lost touch with the friends I used to run races with. I should probably try to reignite some of those relationships — it definitely helped keep me motivated.

Any-who. As far as St. Paddy’s Day plans go, we don’t have any, but we did have a nice family day yesterday. Paul and I took the girls to the mall for a while in the afternoon, and then we came home and I made a salmon dinner at D’s request, since he’s headed back to college today.

So I thought I’d share what I’ve worn this month. I usually do these posts on Saturdays, but with 26 Days of Spring Fashion, I haven’t had a chance. I already shared what I wore at Disney, so I won’t repost those outfits. These are the outfits I’ve worn here at home during the month of March.

I don’t post them all on Instagram because I like my feed to look pretty, and too many mirror selfies kind of disrupts the flow. Yes, I think about these things, ha! I’m trying to remember to at least post on my Story, but sometimes I forget.

Anyway, because it’s March and still quite wintry, a lot of what I’m wearing has sold out, but I often get asked, “What do you really wear?” so this post answers that question.

What I Wore This Month

March 1st was Paul’s birthday, and I met him at the mall to shop for his birthday gift and also to pick up my new eyeglasses. It was a snowy day, as you can see from the window behind me. My daughter had a 2-hour school delay, so once I got her on the bus, I left for the mall. I wore this comfy old outfit.

The grey sweater sold out, I believe, but these jeans have been brought back by one retailer — Bergdorf Goodman. I was shocked to discover them because they’ve been sold out everywhere for such a long time.

Mine are several years old, but I keep wearing them because at this point they feel like pajamas. These are a great dupe, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly look for less.

The next night, I hosted a birthday party for Paul here at the house with some friends, and I wanted to look casual but nice. I wore this burgundy bell sleeve sweater with high rise skinnies and my black mules. This sweater was actually on a much deeper discount at Bloomies when I bought it, and I think some of you grabbed it too when I featured it before Christmas.

My 7FAM  jeans are an #NSale purchase, and they’ve been discontinued, but these are similar. I wanted a higher rise under this sweater to help keep things smoothed out, since it’s pretty form-fitting.

I would have preferred to wear heels, but I chose the mules because they’re fashion-forward but comfortable enough to stand in all night. Finally, the necklace was my Christmas gift from Paul this year. It’s definitely an investment piece, and unfortunately I haven’t been able to find anything similar to link to. If you see something, let us know!

I wore this next outfit to church that Sunday. Again, mostly old stuff I dug out of the back of my closet. I love this blouse from Express — it’s one of their slim portofino shirts.

I wore this next outfit on Tuesday for my Facebook Live hair curling demo with L’ange.

Nothing new here, but I really have been enjoying this top, and it’s still available AND on sale. (HINT: sign up to be a Madewell Insider, and you get free shipping and free returns on all orders.)

I washed it on cold and laid it flat to dry, but it did shrink up a bit. It still looks fine, but you may want to size up if you like a looser fit. I have the small, for reference.

This was my travel outfit on the way down to Disney. It was cold, and I knew it was going to be chilly in Orlando that evening as well, so I went ahead and dressed for winter.

white sweatshirt // jeans (budget option) // sneakers // scarf // sunnies // suitcase // tote (similar for less / budget option)

I wore this one of the first days we were back home. I had a photo shoot that morning, and I threw on this comfy outfit afterwards for an afternoon here at the house. Yes, I really do wear these jeans 3 or 4 days a week. My cost per wear is mere pennies at this point.

The only picture that isn’t a mirror selfie… Paul and I went down to visit the in-laws, and they took us out to dinner. I got this jacket through my friend Carly’s styling service. She posted it on Facebook, and I jumped right on it. The pumps are old, and the blouse is the same one I featured in yesterday’s blog post, but there are only two sizes left.

I wore this next look on Thursday for a meeting in Philly with ShopStyle and an afternoon at the Museum of the American Revolution with my boys. Paul and D went with me and hung out in Rittenhouse Square while I had my meeting, and then we drove into Old City to go to the museum. We all loved it, and I highly recommend it if you’re a local or visiting Philly anytime soon.

By the way, this sweater has been restocked, AND it’s on sale! I didn’t feel like the outfit needed a necklace because there’s so much texture in the sweater, but now that I’m looking at this picture, I do think it could use something. Also, I did put on my rings before I left — they were downstairs on my desk when I took this picture.

Also not pictured, I carried a black leather tote because I needed a bag to accommodate my laptop. I wish I’d brought a smaller crossbody for the museum, but I just left my computer in the car and carried my tote. It did get cumbersome after a while!

It was 70 degrees on Friday, and I threw on this spring look after my photo shoot that morning. It was such a gorgeous day, and while it’s already cold again, it was a nice reprieve and a little taste of what’s to come!

We’re all getting spring fever around here. Even the girls went through their clothes yesterday and started pulling out the wintriest pieces to pack away or donate.

Finally, this is what I wore yesterday for our mall outing. It’s chilly again, but I was itching to wear something a little more spring-like. I decided to pair this cozy cashmere sweater with white jeans, and I wore taupe suede loafers.

These shoes were super comfortable for walking around the mall. I wasn’t sure how they would do, but I didn’t have any blisters or anything.

So that’s a wrap. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. I hear yeah about the weather it’s always changing. I found my white leather sneakers🤗 and a few other new spring finds for when the weather keeps improving ( see how positive that is lol) I like the recap of your outfits and the ideas they give me during the switch over. I really like the poka dot jumpsuit from loft..what size did you buy? I read it ran big?? Have a great day. We are celebrating our daughter’s and niece’s bday today here at our house … our daughter’s bday is tomorrow and my niece on Wednesday. We will take our daughter out tomorrow for her own birthday dinner too… funny how these birthdays go for days lol

  2. We don’t anything for St. Patty’s Day either.  Larry started back on the oral chemo yesterday, so there’s a 99% chance this will be a very tired and sleepy day for him.  It will be a low key day for me as well, due to the nasty bacteria still hanging around in my sinuses.  I REALLY do like seeing what you actually wear every day.  My brain is ready to get all of my heavier winter pieces out of my closet, but I just don’t have the strength to get them up in the attic.  I have changed out my footwear, so that’s a start.  Have a blessed day!

  3. Really like to see what you wear in real life out and about. Your look is what I strive for: casual yet stylish. You look terrific! Happy St Patrick’s Day!🍀

  4. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️  I am Irish and we still aren’t doing anything special for the day.  In fact, we are going to have Thai food for lunch.  Ha.  Love seeing what you wear on a daily basis.  It encourages me to break out of my rut and wear some different things, even if I’m just staying home.

  5. Our weather has turned beautiful! The sun is shining and the temps are up high enough that I can work in my garden. It really is a happy place for me. Once everything is pruned and groomed, I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing pretty. I put away my boots and winter coats yesterday. 😀
We went to a St. Patty’s party last night, celebrating with Irish. Some family even flew in from Ireland for a visit. They know how to party!
    Enjoy your Sunday!

  6. Hey Jo-Lynne! Hope you’re having a great day. What size and color is that blush hooded cardigan ( the Amazon one)? I’m sure you are on your way to West Chester. I have a friend who had 3 of her 4 children attend there. I’m Happy you chose Blogging for a living. Thank you.

  7. What are the cropped jeans you are wearing with the red top?  My computer won’t let me open the link!   I don’t know where you are in your quest for straight leg jeans, but those look great on you.  I was thinking about you today, because I stopped into BR, and thought their mid-rise straight leg jeans are cute too.  I’ve been itching to try the look – just for something different – and I may get those (on sale (which BR has regularly), they are relatively inexpensive) .  My only issue is that they are on the thick side, which is not ideal for warm weather.  Still, they looked good….does anything else really matter?? 🙂

    1. They’re Citizens cropped skinnies – https://shopstyle.it/l/0Upm

I think the answer is for me to wear cropped skinnies, not cropped straight jeans. I think it’s b/c I have wide hips and thin calves, and the discrepancy is highlighted when pants are straight fit. That’s all I can figure. I do like these a lot, and I may see if I can find a white pair. Even though they’re $$$, it’s worth it if they fit well and hold up for a few years.

I did try those BR straight jeans, and they looked really weird on me – are these what you mean? They look so much wider on me than on the website model — back to my hip to calf ratio, lol! https://jolynneshane.com/straight-leg-jeans-rust-cardigan-for-fall.html

      1. Oh – those are skinnies?  Interesting, because they look wider to me than skinnies.  Bummer that they’re pricy, but I suspect you’d wear them (for all those times you were thinking you wanted to wear straight leg jeans, lol).  That is not a brand I have ever worn (not sure I’ve even tried them on).

It looks like the BR jeans you linked to are long.  The ones I looked at today are cropped/ankle length.  Here is the link: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=446473002&cid=1077450&pcid=5030.  Based on what you are telling me about your calves vs. hips though, I wonder if you’d have the same issue with them.  That is definitely not me – years of running has made my calves somewhat large.  That’s part of why AG jeans don’t look all that good on me (they tend to be tighter in the calves).  Even without big hips, I can see how the straighter cut tends to make one look wider….

        1. Oh ya, those would look awful on me, lol!!! I can just tell. These are skinnies but they’re not quite as tight as some. I think that’s going to be key for me — finding the exact right leg opening and sticking with it. I’ve had good luck with Citizens over the years, but I don’t wear them as much as I do AG and Paige. I also have Citizens shorts that I like a lot.
