Cute Finds!

This summer instead of roasting in denim shorts and capris all summer, I have decided to add the casual skirt to my wardrobe rotation.  I’ve never been one to throw on a skirt and call it casual.  For one thing, I detest hose and tights.  So I when the weather is too cool for bare legs, all I wear are pants.  Yes, even for dressy occasions.

I do wear skirts to church in the summertime, but that’s about it.  Lately, though, several people have pointed out how much cooler a skirt is than capris or even shorts, and since I have pretty much given up on shorts that don’t come at least down to the tops of my knees, I decided this summer I will give the casual skirt a try.

First I went to the Gap in search of a skirt I saw earlier in the season.  I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I came home with this in navy.  I wasn’t sure about it, so it was still in my closet with the tags on when I was shopping at Target last week and happened across the Converse® One Star® Pencil Skirt in federal blue.

I haven’t had a lot of luck with Target clothes, but I threw it in my cart and hoped for the best.

Well, guess what?  It was everything I was hoping it would be.  It’s sporty and casual and cool and comfortable.  And best of all, it makes me look curvy in places that I generally am not.  I threw it on yesterday with a white t-shirt and flip-flops and went about my day, and I was so comfy that I’m pretty sure I will be living in this skirt all summer long if I don’t go out and get a few more.  For $24.99, it isn’t cheap, especially for Tar-Jay, but so far it seems well worth the price.

No, I am not being paid for this post.  I just was so excited about my new skirt that I had to share.

What’s your favorite casual summertime look?  Inquiring minds what to know.

  1. I do wear a lot of capri early on, but shorts and tanks or t shirts and my Rainbow flip flops are pretty much my daily uniform

Comfy and cool is the name of the game around here.

  2. I LOVE skirst in the spring/summer/fall. Old Navy is another good place for them.

And for some reason, denim skirts are still cooler than denim shorts…

  3. I like wearing skirts, but I am not actually convinced that they are that much cooler. At least not when you have fat, pregnant thighs that get sweaty and stick together. Ick.

  4. I’m all about the skirt too. I found several at Target to add to my wardrobe this summer. Do you have JCPenney up there? They have lots of cute skirts for good prices, and they can be dressed up for church or dressed down for day wear. I rarely wear shorts in the summer and only have one pair of capris that I like, so skirts are the standard for me.

  5. I love love love wearing skirts! In fact, I’m wearing one right now that is very similar to the one in your picture. They are perfect for spring and summertime. Paired with a cute t-shirt and flipflops, I don’t think they look too dressed up.

  6. I live in skirts in the summer. I have athletic shorts that I wear around the house, but when I go out of the house it’s generally skirts. My legs look so much nicer in them than they do in shorts, and I find them more comfortable. Well, except when my thighs rub, but that’s the motivation I need to keep working out, so there’s a silver lining there.

  7. I wish I could get into the skirt thing. I’ve always felt it was more of a formal thing though. And, like you, I’ve always saved my skirts for church.

I live in my knee-length shorts and capris. And tank tops. Definitely tanks.

Temps creep up pretty high here though so maybe I’ll have to take another look at the skirt – as an everyday piece.

  8. I’m guessing it doesn’t get above 100 degrees where you live? I find that skirts are just uncomfortable in our summer heat (in southern CA)… my legs stick together and sometimes sweat drips down them… yuck yuck yuck. When it’s roasting I definitely prefer shorts (and I agree, they have to go almost to my knees). I find that khaki is cooler than denim.

If I’m in a cooler climate, say somewhere that the weather is in the 80s, then sure, skirts are great.

  10. Cute, cute skirt! Typically I live in bermudas or capris in the summer. My goal this summer is to give skirts more of a chance on casual days–not just church. Of course, I have yet to wear one.

  11. I am probably way out of fashion here but my summer find was a skort. A simple denim skort and OH MY WORD it is comfy! I didn’t have high hopes but it ended up just rocking my world. I wore it to the zoo this weekend with a tank top and was totally comfortable the whole time. I was not restricted and I could squat down to tend to the children without worry. LOL
I am not a skirt person but this bad boy is changing my opinion!

  12. Me likey the loose cargo/canvas pants.
I spend so much of my day sitting, that the view looking down at my flaccid splayed thighs is unappetizing to say the least (although, once the kids are out of kindergarten, I’m betting there will be resumed upright time!)

Any strategic batwing covering summer top ideas?

(Thanks for the tip on the skirt though! It looks like it may be long enough to mask my insecurities…)

  13. I love that skirt! I have changed a lot in the past couple of summers – I used to stay far away from skirts because I’m hippy but someone helped me find the right fit and it changed my thinking entirely. I’m so glad denim and dark blue skirts are in style this summer – colorful summer tees look great with them!

  14. My favorite summertime comfort/cute wear is a skort from Athleta.com. I would NEVER wear the old fashioned wrap-around type skort, but these look like regular skirts and they are oh so comfie! Washes well, dries easily and just looks nice all day.
I love the skirt you posted. Wash it about 10 times and then let us know if it is holding up well….and then I’ll go buy it, LOL!

  15. I live in my straight jean skirt, and various colors of skorts all summer long. I got a really cute plaid one at Kohl’s tonight with my birthday money! I have vowed to wear interesting shirts, too, this summer, instead of my standard uniform: plain v-neck or tank top. I got some cute prints tonight, too.

Are you still doing the fashion questions? I got mega burned today at the pool. (I forgot to sunscreen myself after working myself to death doing all three kids.) I have a halter top bathing suit, and I need to know if it is really tacky to wear a shirt if the horrid burn-lines show?

And a question for chic-critique. Do they make self-burning lotion, because maybe I could cover up the lines with that?
